  1. I'd say the final score accurately reflected the difference between Akron and EMU. Time to switch to the OU-Can't game.
  2. 4th quarter: Toledo 36, Temple 13.
  3. As I've said before, if this so-called "phantom attendance" was an acceptable practice, EMU wouldn't be reporting 5,000 average attendance for football. The NCAA allows each school to determine its own method of calculating attendance. EMU may be reporting only fans in the seats, which is really the only honest way to do it.
  4. The Rockitt up 3 on the Orange in the 4th. Owls getting their BE resume ready.. Toledo at the Syracuse 9 yard with 1:13 left. Syracuse up by 3. Holdee cow...overtime OT final, Syracuse 33, Toledo 30. Ball State 31, Army 0 - at halftime. Army beat Northwestern last week. Go South Alabama.
  5. The Rockitt up 3 on the Orange in the 4th. Owls getting their BE resume ready.. Toledo at the Syracuse 9 yard with 1:13 left. Syracuse up by 3.
  6. These are businesses. They stock what they know sells. If you were in charge, you'd have to make the same business decisions. If you used your heart to decide what to put on the shelves, you would not last long. No sense getting mad at them.Face it, Akron gear is not exactly going to be flying off the shelf right now. If the football team was winning, it would probably be a different story. This is one of the ripple effects of all of the embarrassing losses on the football field.
  7. I have not totally given up yet. Joe Novak had a few rough years at NIU before he turned that program around. That being said, when a head coach has the kind of disastrous start that RI has had, I am sure history shows that he crashes and burns far more often than he ultimately achieves success.
  8. Since VMI is 0-3, I would consider a win by a touchdown or less to be a disaster. If we do struggle to beat a winless DII team, that will say it all. But a win by a lot of points won't mean that much, considering the weakness of the opponent. We will know more about this team once we get into the meat of the MAC schedule. I expect to get beat up by the good MAC teams, but we'll get a better handle on the situation once we see how they stack up against the middle and lower tier MAC teams.
  9. Interestingly, Nebraska was a member of the AAU when they were invited to join the Big Ten, but they have since had their membership revoked. Something about insufficient funds dedicated to research.I agree that WVU will not be asked to join the Big Ten. Academically, they are a tier 3 university. Their academic standards are low and their endowment is less than half of the lowest endowed school in the Big Ten. The Big Ten presidents and chancellors would consider it slumming to go after the likes of WVU. I can't see the Big Ten getting bigger than 16 teams, but who knows. If/when the Big 12 implodes, Iowa State, Kansas, and Kansas State will probably be asking to get in. And, although it makes no geographic sense, Texas would make a tremendous addition.
  10. Can't stand listening RI's post game interview. He talks about "growing" and learning" and "moving forward." And that "we competed." He mentioned "the positives" to be taken from the second half.No coach. You admit that this was an awful performance. You say that huge improvement is needed in all areas. You say this is totally unacceptable.
  11. I found an article on NCAA football attendance calculation methods that was a few years old so maybe the rules have changed, but as of a few years ago the NCAA allowed schools to establish their own method of calculating attendance. Some schools count only the butts in the seats. Some use tickets sold, even if not used. Some use the number of tickets distributed, even if given away. Some use the total number of people present in the stadium, including officials, ushers, and the hot dog vendor. Some will county a luxury box that seats 20 as 20 people attending, even if only 2 people are in the box.My guess is that for Akron, the hot dog man counts as two.
  12. There is no reason Akron cannot be playing at the same level as Toledo. Its just a matter of having the right people in charge.Next up for Toledo: Boise State, currently ranked #4. At Toledo; Friday night.
  13. The coaches who preceded Saban and Meyer must have done a wonderful job of stocking their rosters with great players so that Nick and Urban could be so successful right out of the gate. Both programs were struggling when those guys took over. Their impact was immediate. It's possible for that to happen at Akron.Isn't there an old saying of A great coach can beat you with his players and then turn around and beat you with your players? A great coach can make fair talent look pretty darn good. A bad coach can make that same talent look terrible.Of course I'm not saying these two aren't great coaches. But I think it's easy to sluff off the fact that they did this at two of the MAC's all-time winningest programs. The cupboard certainly wasn't bare when they arrived. It MAY be considerably harder at a place like UA, EMU or Temple, with little sustained success at the D-1 level.
  14. I know we are not dealing with a Nick Saban or Urban Meyer here, but it's instructive to see what a difference a really good coach in the MAC can make in a short period of time.BGSU was 2-9 in 2000, with several losing seasons before that. In his two years at Bowling Green, Urban Meyer went 8-3, 9-3. He went to Utah in 2002 after Utah went 5-6 in 2001. They went 10-2 and 12-0 in his two years there.Toledo was coming off consecutive 5-6 seasons when they hired Nick Saban. The next year UT went 9-2 under Saban. To watch Akron make a big step backwards under this guy last year was hard to stomach. Hire the right coach and there's no reason Akron could not be winning 8 or 9 games a season in a few years.
  15. It's hard to believe that we would have Ianello as a coach if TW was not the AD. Does anyone really think that he would have even been among the finalists without TW pushing him? Assuming that's true, this hire really is on TW. I want the guy to succeed but he has been a disaster and it's hard to see him turning this thing around. My worst fear is that he'll "improve" to 3 or 4 wins a year - just enough to keep him from getting fired - and we'll be stuck with him until his contract runs out.
  16. In fact, the 1st quarter ended with Akron leading 2-0. That was the week after Appalachian State beat Michigan, I think. The OSU fans were restless. The OSU offense was loaded that year but they could never get on track that game. They won because Akron generated almost no offense. Driving home from the game, the OSU fans on the sports talk shows talked quite a lot about how tough the Akron defense played. The Akron punter had a phenomenal game and kept the Buckeyes out of field position all game. Though it was a loss, it was very good showing. The NC State game is the best, though. First BCS win. I'm waiting for a BCS win at the Info in front of 30,000. That will be great.
  17. I knew a guy from Wooster and he used to correct people all the time by saying, "And what is a tree made out of? Wooood?"
  18. Poor Buckzip. Are you kidding? I have friends who are OSU fans that are so upset by this situation that I can't even bring the subject up with them. Why do you say that?
  19. Bafoons and incomps I would agree. I think we should at least give Obama and the Seals some credit for killing the guy who masterminded the Sept 11 murder of 3,000 Americans. Americans should feel good about what happened and we should be able to express positive statements about those responsible for meting our justice the old school way.....a bullet through the head. Wow. You guys are amazing. I am incredibly impressed. I had no idea we had posters on this board who had the highest top secret clearance on national security information. You know, like the president and the secretary of defense. Because you obviously feel that you know more than them and that they are idiots. So you must have access to all that information to have your opinion be worth a nickel. Again, I had no idea we had such national security experts who are posters. It can take years to get the kind of clearance to gain access to the information you have. You are amazing. Seriously.
  20. Maybe 1-11. The ineligible players were cleared by the NCAA to play in the bowl game.
  21. I was under the impression that European players have a reputation for being more fundamentally sound than American players. The European game is more team oriented. But maybe Akmahdeniijaniastonia is not in Europe.
  22. Sure, knocking the coach is common on fan boards, but very few fans have ever had to endure a season like last year for their newly-hired coach. The griping by the fans about the travesty that was the 2010 Akron football seasnon is entirely understandable. Last season was historically bad. The complaints from the fan are not "just the way sports works." Its what you get when you put out a horrid product. Akron football has been a horrible product for a long time now....what else is new? We all thought JD might be able to turn it around and we had a glimpse of hope, but it faded quickly. Let's give this guy a shot and see if it works out. I want Coach Ianello to succeed. Every new coach deserves time to put his together his team and his system. But last year was a disaster. For most of the year, we were not just getting beat, we were getting humiliated. One one-sided loss after another. No one saw that trainwreck of a season coming. My point was just that all the complaining about the coach by the fans was not just "fans being fans." They were given good reason to complain.
