  1. Sure, knocking the coach is common on fan boards, but very few fans have ever had to endure a season like last year for their newly-hired coach. The griping by the fans about the travesty that was the 2010 Akron football seasnon is entirely understandable. Last season was historically bad. The complaints from the fan are not "just the way sports works." Its what you get when you put out a horrid product.
  2. two things. 1. I don't think the Colonial League is overrated. 2. Almost all of the years that were tracked for Butler earlier in this thread, they got into the big dance by winning their conference tournament, not through their OOC scheduling. Butler OOC 20100 schedule: Losses to Louisville, Duke, and Xavier (by 2 points); Wins against Mississippi State, Stanford, Utah, Florida State, and Washington State. That schedule had to toughen them up or the tournament.
  3. Well, they were one hit wonders in the sense that they only had one real hit. Mark Motherbaugh is a creative guy, no doubt. But not in a cutting edge way. He does background music for films and clever jingles for ads. He wrote the music for the "I'm a MAC, he's a PC" commercials. I'm sure he makes a nice living. As far as Devo goes, they've always been more of a novelty act more than anything else. David Bowie saw one of their shows in NYC in the mid-70s and liked them. That's how they got their break. Their first record was pretty wild, but everything since has been a little too calculated to appeal to anyone other than their hardcore fans. Except for Whip It, which was later used in some kind of broom commercial, I think. So much for being hip. I saw the Can't State ad featuring Mothersbaugh on TV a few months ago. It is well done, but I could not help but wonder if, when he was a student there, the university did anything to nurture him. My guess is that he was considered kind of a freak. Now that he's had some success, they want to take credit. Same for Joe Walsh and Chrissie Hynde. I bet when they were students, their talents were ignored. The real creative types have to create their art outside of the confines of academia, which does more to stifle creativity than anything else. Just my opinion.
  4. Wow. That ending reminded me of the ending of the soccer championship game. Great defense when it mattered most. What a game.
  5. Indie rock band "Akron/Family," who apparently have no connection to the city of Akron.
  6. Whenever the defendant and the prosecutor agree beforehand that, whatever the polygraph results turn out to be, they will be admissible.
  7. Botzum was once a thriving canal town, if I remember the Towpath Canal plaque description correctly. Nobody lives in Botzum anymore. Being old fashioned doesn't always serve well. If by old fashioned you mean that he resembles Oliver Hardy, I have to agree. Now if he can hire an assistant who looks like Stan Laurel, the Michiganders will really have something going for them. There are a few "Brady Hoke Lookalike" websites. My favorite Brady lookalikes are the pictures of Fred Flintstone and Susan Boyle.
  8. Formerly of Akron. Now of Nashville. Hated to see them go. I thought that being from Akron gave them their sound a nice edge. Now they are far from their roots and fully immersed in the biz. It will be inetresting to see how it affects their music. 10 AM Automatic.
  9. BUT when it hits $5.00 and $6.00, that HSR that the other states have will look awful good... Could you show me some source for your prediction that gas prices will go up that high and that it would have any relation to high speed rail? Honestly, if you have it, I truly would like to see it. When is that predicted to happen? Show me where the world is NEVER going to start running out of petroleum. And I never said the price of gas has anything to do with HSR. But WHEN petrol goes up, for any of a bunch of reasons, it sure would be nice to have an alternative mode of transportation. Ohio is so stuck in the past I can't stand it. There are still people all over Ohio waiting around for the steel mills to open back up. WAKE UP. It's not the 50's anymore. There's a reason most of the worst rust belt wastelands are in Ohio and people are leaving everyday... +1. HSR isn't a matter of if, it is a matter of when. Because of the current backwards, conservative thinking, Ohio will once again lag behind most other states in this development. I would rather take the train than drive or fly any day. If the argument for the train is that someday the world will run out of oil, then the discussion has gotten a little out-there. Yes, someday the world will run out of oil. But not for a few hundred years. New reserves are being found and existing reserves tend to have more supply than initially projected. Its not really a persuasive argument to build this train. Its more realistic to predict that gas prices will go up because of higher taxes than we run out of oil. I'm a believer in alternative energy sources, mainly to get us off of our dependence on foreign oil. I actually like the idea of a high speed train in Ohio and I think it should be built when it makes financial and technical sense. It just doesn't make sense now. As I said before, the federal government has no money and is deeply in debt. The state is in bad financial shape as well. Painful budget cuts are going to have to made everywhere. There is no money.
  10. http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=145&F=3...6951974&P=1 Awww.... wittle Buckzip had his wittle feelings hurt in here so he had to go make himself feel better and have a little circle jerk with his Suckeye buddies.... How cute. Seriously dude, what a sign of the weakness of your manhood. Because you were losing the argument in here, you have to take the argument to a bunch of people who will agree with you. And where are all these facts you claim no one responds to that you supposedly present? It's easy to make such a claim when no one will challenge you over there huh. And then you sit back while a bunch of Suckeye fans bash Akron. You're a weak weak man. Actually, you guys were asking for it.
  11. Good for you. To each his own.
  12. Why should anyone feel that it is up to him to decide who should be "allowed" to root for whatever team they want to? That mentality makes absolutely no sense to me. People root for a particular team for any number of reasons, some of which make more sense than others. Obviously, the most logical reason to be a fan is that you went to the school, but some people are just frontrunners. Some people root for the local team, whether they went there or not. I have no problem whatsoever with anyone who develops a connection with any particular team, Can't fans excepted. They deserve scorn. I watched a big rivalry game on TV one time with the sound down. The camera kept panning the crowd showing the fans grouped together in their respective team colors, jumping up and down and yelling and hugging when their team did something good. Emotionally crushed when their team was defeated. It was very tribal. Team-fan connections are deep and emotional, and not necessarily rational. I am an Akron fan first and foremost. But I confess that I root for OSU was well. That's probably based on the many happy hours I spent as a boy watching OSU on TV with my dad in suburban Cleveland. My dad was a big OSU fan. He never went there. He would root for all Ohio teams in all sports, except the Reds and Bengals. To each his own.
  13. They love the game. Its their dream. I understand it. They can finish school later. What a tremendous compliment to Coach Porter that he was able to attract and develop such talent.
  14. One thing tOSU fans are really good at is leaving out analysis about their team. While it is true all of the above is a fact, let's have a closer look...... GP1, Although I can certainly understand why someone might have the point of view that because the Buckeyes have underperformed in the National Championship games they are in fact inferior as a football program to the top-level SEC teams over the past 5 years, to say blanketedly that the BIG 10 conference is second tier, and in the next sentence say the BIG 12 and PAC 10 are first tier, is more than a little suspect. As a conference I would certainly put the SEC as the top one over the past decade, but after that the Big 10 is at least the equal of the PAC 10 and the BIG 12. The PAC 10 has realistically had one top program in football over the past decade, USC. The rest have been very mediocre with Oregon the past two seasons being maybe the next best( with their lone BCS appearance spoiled by a Big 10 team) and the BIG 12 has had Texas and Oklahoma and everyone else, with Oklahoma having lost their last 5 bowl games. In fact their next best program is leaving them for the Big 10 this year. I actually think that Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State over the past ten years, and this year Michigan State, would hold thier own in either of these conferences so I do not get the second tier reference to the Big 10 if you are not also counitng the Big 12 and PAC 10 in the second tier as well. Also, I hope you are not saying that Miami in 2002-2003 was a washed up program already when Ohio State beat them for the National Championship, because that would be laughable at best as they were clearly the best program over that 3 or 4 year period and that team in particular was arguably the best, or at least most talented of any team in either the BCS era or the decade prior. (Note- I do not think that is what you were saying as I think your meaning was that now they are down, correct?) Lastly, I am by no means an Ohio State homer as I am a Zips fan and University of Akron Alumni first, but I would certainly root for Ohio State over anyone else they are playing as they are my home states biggest school, and in most regards best chance for a nationally competitive team. I do enjoy reading all of these posts and can appreciate everyones differing perspectives, but I do not understand the strong hatred displayed for Ohio State and the Big 10 on this board. Have a great day. +1 (minus the whole "I root for them because they are the state's biggest school" part) Believe it or not, many OSU fans were rooting on the UA soccer team in the tourney too. The hate doesn't go both ways even in the sports UA is superior in. Buckzip, Sometimes I actually intently listen to what you have to say. Other times, I see you as the typical delusional OSWho fan. This comment from you would fall into the latter category. I'd like to introduce you to some people I know, who have done nothing since December 14th but say, "Enjoy your title in a Euro-sport that nobody cares about while we keep kicking your tails in football". And, "You guys keep talking about your soccer title because you aren't good in a REAL sport". I'm seeing a concerted effort to discredit our title that I didn't even expect. Have you seen the footage of the OSWho player kicking Nagbe in the head this year? You don't think that's frustration and a blatant lack of sportsmanship from not being able to beat us? And did you hear the comments from their coach? You don't think that's yet another example of them displaying their arrogance and self-perceived superiority over Akron? I can also introduce you to at least a dozen Zips fans that will tell you that when we go to road games, the games at OSWho are unquestionably the games where we get harrassed the worst by the home fans. Although I wouldn't believe you, you could possibly try to convince someone that these are "isolated incidents". But to flat-out say that there is NO hatred towards Akron coming from OSWho is simply ridiculous and untrue. The highlighted part is the only part I will respond to because the rest is garbage. Yes, I saw it. I also mentioned it was BS and the coach was a complete jackass for saying the red card was harsh. I also posted that clip on the OSU board to see what type of reaction it would get. With the exception of a couple of "who cares about soccer types", which by the way, we actually have here too, everyone attacked the OSU player. Not one defended him. I actually posted that when it was being discussed too. My point was that your statement indicated that there is NO hate coming from OSWho towards Akron. I see none. I can guarantee you that I know many, many, many more OSU people than you do. I can also point you to sites to prove it. All you have is your supposed friends that act that way. I also would bet that you started most of the crap with your supposed friends. This remeinds me of Cincy last year. Most OSU fans were happy that Cincy was doing well. Then the Concy fans started coming to OSU sites and saying they were the best in Ohio and OSU wanted no part of them and being complete jerks. Then of coruse the OSU fans changed their tune. I feel this is you. I have stated many times that there are bad apples everywhere. When you have as big of a fanbase as OSU does there are going to be a decent amount of jerks.. However, your thoughts that most or many are that way is completely incorrect. Again, you indicated that hatred does not exist from OSWho's side. And you'd be incredibly naive if you think that is true. We could debate the magnitude of the hatred all day long and not accomplish anything. That wasn't part of my response. Its just one person's experience, but I know lots of OSU alums who are big Buckeye fans and not one "hates" Akron. In fact, they were all really happy for Akron that the soccer team winning the national championship. Can't fans, on the other hand, seemed jealous.
  15. Based on their performance so far, this team cannot afford to take any D1 team on the schedule lightly. We are not that good.
  16. BUT when it hits $5.00 and $6.00, that HSR that the other states have will look awful good... Could you show me some source for your prediction that gas prices will go up that high and that it would have any relation to high speed rail? Honestly, if you have it, I truly would like to see it. When is that predicted to happen?
  17. If the price of gas goes up a dollar a gallon, it won't have anything to do with high speed rail. Also, its not like I don't think that high speed rail is a nice idea. Its just that its way too expensive given the reality is that the country is already massively in debt. As I read a columnist in another paper describe it, the federal government would not really be giving Ohio $400 million; it would be giving Ohio an empty bag with "$400 million" written on it.
  18. Right. So refresh my memory...where did the $400 mill end up going? I imagine it will go to states where high speed rail might make some sense, as opposed to Ohio, which would have a train that would cost an astronomical amount of money and time to develop and for which there is no significant demand. But hey, its free money, so why not.
  19. Except we had the 2 and OSU had the 3. Beanie Wells got tackled in the end zone for a safety in the first half for a 2-0 Akron lead, if I remember correctly. It was right in front of me. Its the only time in Beanie's high school or college career that he was tackled for a saftety. At halftime, the Buckeye fans were a little edgy. Personally, I'd rather face OSU at full strength.
  20. How is a rail system like this an investment in the state? How does it make Ohio more competitive in the global market? It all sounds good when you say it and type it, but does it really do these things. Only one public transportation system in the United States turns a profit, New York City. Every other transit system loses money and is basically a welfare program. Roads don't "make" money either. They are exclusively paid for with taxes. By your logic, all forms of transportation are welfare programs. They are all in some way subsidized with public money. Even private jets usually (although not always) utilize public airports. Except everyone uses roads daily. About 2% of the population would use trains. And many of those would be once in a lifetime. With current American culture, yes, you are correct. The use of railroads would take some getting used to, but you need look no further than Amtrak's northeast corridor to see the potential. Europeans also make regular and widespread use of high-speed railroad. High speed rail works in Europe and Japan because of the density of the population and public demand for trains. Maybe in the Boston/NY/Phil/DC corridor it would work because of the population and the demand for ridership. But Ohio is much different. The population is smaller with less density and there is little demand for train ridership. Plus, it would be very expensive to build and maintain. In most of the country, interstate auto travel and plane travel is what people demand, so that's what is available. If there was a demand for a train to run from Cleveland to Cinci, it would exist. There isn't and it doesn't.
  21. Last month three other Can't basketball players were charged with disorderly conduct for their involvement in a big fight at 2 a.m. involving 40 people. And then Geno Ford says those charges are no more serious than speeding tickets. Uh, no Geno. You don't face six months in jail for a speeding ticket. Lots of law abiding people get speeding tickets; not many law abiding people get arrested for being involved in 40-person brawls at 2 a.m.
  22. That would be a good situation for both Miami and Fickell, but I can't find that this is being reported anywhere. Am I missing something?
  23. I'm tired of finding consolation that we did not "get blown out." I thought the same thing after the Dayton game. If we ever wants to be taken seriously, we have to win some of these games with name opponents.
  24. This will be Coach Porter's sixth college national championship ring. He won three national championships as a player at Indiana and two more as an assistant at Indiana. I bet this is his favorite of them all. He's obviously a quality coach, but he seems like an equally good person. My sense is that he loves the college game and really enjoys the teaching aspect of the game. He has found his calling as a college coach and there is no better fit for him than at Akron.
  25. You drove from Akron to the Columbus airport to catch a 6:30 am flight to California to root for Akron in the College Cup? You know what the college experience is all about. You are the man.
