You don't ask to be admitted to a P5 conference. They invite you in if and when they decide it is in their best interest. That being said, the chances of Akron being asked to join a P5 conference at any time in the forseeable future is the same as Bluto's GPA, 0.00.

Toledo just hired Jason Candle as head coach to replace Matt Campbell. Candle was the OC under Campbell and the players were outspoken that he was the guy they wanted. Toledo has a pattern of staying in-house when hiring a new head coach. When Gary Pinkel left for Missouri, his DC, Tom Amstutz, got the job. When Tim Beckman left for Illinois, his OC, Matt Campbell, got the job. Campbell and Candle are both Mount Union guys mentored by Larry Kehres.

You judge a team by their body of work over the season. You can't look at one game - good or bad - and judge them by that one game. Toledo and BGSU are both tough teams with quality well-coached players. This game tonight is not over. BGSU can score points fast if they get on a roll.

I kind of thought that the UMass game would be a dogfight. The have a terrible record, but they have played well on occasion and they've had some tough losses. It probably hurts their recruiting by being in the MAC. It must be difficult for an eastern team to recruit locally when your conference schedule is against mid-major teams that are bunched together in the midwest and with who you have no history or tradition. I don't see any cupcakes coming up for Akron. Frankly, we are not good enough to be calling any other team a cupcake. I expect every one of our last games to be tough for us, but a 7 win season is within grasp.

Both teams look flat.

It isn't just that it was a loss to BGSU; it's that it was an embarrassing loss. Maybe some of us are suffering from PTSD from the Iamello era. Let's see how the rest of the season plays out. Finishing strong is still a possibility.

Actually, its University at Buffalo (as in SUNY Buffalo). They get riled when they see University "of" Buffalo. If you think that's not a big deal, just stick around this board and read the reactions of the posters the next time an outsider refers to Akron as Akron U.

A few years ago I emailed George about a complaint that I had with something he wrote and he almost immediately shot back an email pretty much telling me that I could shove it. I let it drop. But, man, is that guy thin-skinned. If there's any lightning in the Akron area this game could be delayed. They are supposed to wait 30 minutes after each lightning strike before resuming play.
