Groce wants to run the court and earn more possessions. He plans to play up to 10 players a night, utilizing a bench he considers deep. ...But the new style might come with a significant tradeoff — turnovers. In playing two preseason scrimmages, the Zips flipped the ball to their opponent a combined 39 times, something that wouldn’t bode well for overall success during the regular season. Groce said he’s willing to “live with” 13-14 per game... "Nineteen, 20, 39 combined in the two is too many." ...“I’m into running and striking more in transition and having more possessions,” [Groce] said. “I’m even into understanding [that with] more possessions might come some more turnovers. I’ll swallow that, but I’m not going to tolerate poor defense.”

ABJ/staff report: Zips remain winless after blowout loss to Falcons Bubba had 19 tackles. Alvin Davis finished w/ 15 tackles (1 for a loss) and Lako had 11 (2 for a loss). We finished with a cumulative 100 yards of total offense. ? 71 yards passing on 10 receptions (7 yards per completion) ...and 29 yards rushing on 31 attempts (<1 yard per carry average). ?? BUGS forced 4 turnovers (3 INT's & 1 fumble) ?? ...and 5 sacks. ? Our OL is... just... wow. Lord have mercy.

Our last reasonable chance for a W this season? ABJ/GT: Zips still looking to put together cohesive effort but also don’t be surprised to see more freshmen make their way onto the field in coming weeks on special teams and even earning spots on the two-deep depth chart. The NCAA allows freshmen to appear in four games before losing a year of eligibility. Arth wants to maximize playing time for players and, for those with limited experience, the time is nigh. He singled out former Massillon standout Kyshod Mack, a defensive back, and linebacker Corey Thomas Jr. as two such players. I've been waiting to see the two aforementioned players. I've been a little perplexed that we haven't seen them already. Almost as perplexing as Peter Hayes-Patrick's lack of PT. GT also confirms Shawn Featherstone is done for the year. So his Zips' career is now officially over. He was a good one when healthy. How about a little more Reggie Corner, Jr.?

You and a-zip agree, @John Ward. He was trying to say that he doesn't want to drop to a lower division either. He's supporting the fellas. *Unless I'm completely mis-reading your post, @a-zip?

I always like these first games against teams like this. You get to see everyone play & watch Groce tinker with various lineups. Malone will be all-in to win this game, while we'll be experimenting with various lineups & schemes. So sometimes these games can be closer than one would think. I'm already looking forward to having my butt ache on those JAR bleachers. It's been too long.

Was anyone privy to the Xavier scrimmage who can give a a scoop or two?

Good catch, @bigjim. Here is Janirr Wade's hudl profile, from which I took my information. But FWIW, on Janirr's twitter page, he lists himself as a DE (he doesn't list DT). 280 would be awfully heavy for a DE. So your question definitely still stands.
