Concerning points 2 & 5:#2 - "Eat 'em up, Eat 'em up, go Zips go" UGH!, I HATE that song! It literally embarrasses me. Whenever I bring friends to the game I always try to make smalltalk with them while the band is playing that stupid song so that my friends won't realize how painfully lame it is. Unfortunately, many of my friends are skeptical about coming to a Zips' football game in the first place. Then they hear that song and I just want to crawl under a bleacher! Unfortunately, Hang On Sloopy is terrific. We definitely need something, ANYTHING!, new.#5 - I'm with you on the whole flag girl thing. How LAME! They have no place on a university-level marching band. They're even considered to be rather LAME on the high school level - where the administration is just concerned with the respective kids' self esteem and with helping to give the kids an identity and sense of belonging by getting the kids involved in something. This isn't high school; this is grown up world now. It's just LAME. Get 'em outta here!MORE MILITARY MARCHES!!! COOL MILITARY DRUM CORPS RHYTHMS!!! Unfortunately, OSU's band also has probably the coolest drum corps rhythm I've ever heard. It probably has a name, I don't know, but they play it as they're marching in and then start off their fight song with it. I hate OSU but even I can't help but get goosebumps when I hear that!

Dude! You're giving me goose bumps just reading this!!! I'm so pumped for The Info to open RIGHT NOW!!!
-
Thanks Honestly, I'm hoping both Can't State and Akron amp up our football programs to the level of our basketball programs! If we could both do that, wow, could you imagine the intensity of those football games?! That would be one sick, sick rivalry!!! And that's what makes it all so much fun!

Soccer Recruits Announced
Blue & Gold replied to br30302004's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
We were before the announcement of this recruiting class. I can see UA winning a National Championship in the next 3-10 years.www.collegesoccernews.com usually ranks recruiting classes, but doesn't have a related post yet.Nice that someone is thinking along the same wavelength as Caleb (and I!). But I happen to believe your time span is too long. I'll be surprised if we don't win a title in the next three years, with our talent. It will be very interresting to see how Akron is ranked in the pre-season. I think the coaches may put Akron top-5, but more reasonable is around #10. A team this young and talented will improve as season advances, and could be a real contender by November -- but I hate to put too much pressure on the kids' shoulders so early. Especially Coach Porter. Now let's get that stadium built for our champs! You hit upon a subject that was slightly off-topic, so I did not mention it above, but that is the new soccer stadium. Do you think this class will put some healthy, but real, pressure on the trustees to move up the timetable for construction of a new soccer stadium? To get a class like this, do you think Caleb is talking to these recruits about a new stadium? And where would the stadium be? I don't think there is room for a stadium where the pitch is presently located. -
I love the true gold and blue. The yellow sucks. Fortunately, I think the marketing department feels the same way.Unfortunately, I don't like the new logo system. I know we paid some $$$ to have someone design the new logos & fonts, but I just don't care for them. The "A w/ kangaroo head" logo does nothing for me. It looks neither like an A nor like a kangaroo head. Especially from any distance whatsoever. If someone points out that it's supposed to be an "A", you can say, "Oh, okay, I kinda see it now." But the kangaroo head simply looks like a donkey. And again, from any distance whatsoever it just looks like a blob. I don't care much for the font package either. Someone else pointed out that it doesn't look good on baseball uniforms. I agree. But the problem is not that the uniforms say "Zips," instead of saying "Akron." The problem is the font in which "Zips" is written. With that font "Akron," would not look good either. I'm more traditional, I guess. I'm much more into either cursive or block lettering - the traditional college athletics look, or major league baseball, or most NFL teams. The current logo & font scheme is more minor league-ish than a traditional college design. For instance, the Cleveland Gladiators probably wish they could use our font. The Cleveland Browns? Uh, no way; they would never want it.I also miss the old cartoonish Zippy that used to be on uniforms and merchandise - you remember, the one with Zippy running sideways, looking at the camera and holding up his index finger to say "Number 1!" It was perfect. It was cartoonish and old school and didn't take itself too seriously. Like the nickname Zips does, it doesn't take itself too seriously - as someone mentioned above, it's so bad that it's great, or something like that. But, whatever. I'm cool with anything as long as they keep the TRUE GOLD. NO YELLOW!!!!!!

Soccer Recruits Announced
Blue & Gold replied to br30302004's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Wow, this is huge! I can't believe it, but I'd honestly say that Akron is honest-to-God one of the elite soccer programs in the country now! That's amazing! This is enormous because I would venture to say that soccer is probably the 3rd most popular collegiate sport, albeit presently coming in an incredibly long distance behind #1 football and #2 basketball. -
I totally agree with you LAzipfan. Merging with Can't makes much more sense than merging with CSU. Also the two universities are extremely too close to each other (geographically) and a lot of resources can be shared. I also like the idea of a 50,000 enrollment and may be 8000 average attendance at home bball games. Whew... from a purely rational perspective it could be done. Then again, theoretically, anything can potentially be done. However, from an emotive perspective, wow, there's a lot of bad blood between these two institutions and their alumni - it'd take a full generation to get used to a merger the likes of this! What would the name of the school be?
-
Name the night. I hate that place.I'd drive up from Georgia with gas running as high as it is now just to help out and I know how to drive heavy equipment. The plasma center is a major blight in the area. I understand the need for blood. I don't understand the plasma center. I don't know how to operate heavy equipment, but I'll bring my sledge hammer! The plasma center's got to go! Don't these new townhouse/apartment plans sit on the same lot as the plasma center currently does? http://www.ci.akron.oh.us/news_releases/2005/0311.html And when on earth are they planning on beginning this development?!

Thanks Zippypitt! Nice to have you a part of the 'Nation! Thanks for keeping an eye out, posting, and keeping us informed! Especially right now - until football season starts it's a rather slow time on the board. Too bad about this prospect... we need all the QB talent we can come by!Go Zips!

As God is my witness, I have 2 friends who have degrees in journalism from Can't State and one has been delivering pizzas for Dominoes since he graduated and the other writes one or two articles a month for the local town monthly and also does an occassional snipet for the ABJ's "In The Region" section - needless to say both are finding it next to impossible to find gainful employment. There just really aren't that many job opportunities in the journalism field. To encourage the second of my above mentioned friends, I tell him about watching ESPN's Around the Horn and how Kevin Blackistone - one of the top sports columnists in the country - doesn't even have a job right now. So, Can't State can have journalism; UA will gladly take math, science, business and law.
-
There is an article concerning the march in today's ABJ. The article states that there were about 45 protest marchers. Last night I took a guess at about 30 marchers. 45 is probably more accurate. I wasn't paying much attention... there was a baseball game being played! Fortunately it really didn't look as if anyone else was paying them any mind either.http://www.ohio.com/news/top_stories/17937009.html

Anybody see if this happened? It did. I was at the baseball game today catching some rays and I happened to look behind me and see the group marching. They were holding a few signs, but weren't making any noise at all and weren't making a scene out of it - I wouldn't have even known that they were marching back there had I not happened to turn around. It was pretty uneventful... which was nice. I'd say there were about 30 of them. They weren't causing any trouble; they're probably just friends of Manny's. He's the one who should be ashamed of himself.
-
No, too busy. I'm waiting for the King James event here in Akron.
-
I just saw the story in the ABJ. It's page A-1 front & center. This Harry Jackson, owner of the Odd Corner, must be an honest-to-God first class tool. I haven't been into the Odd Corner in years, but the last time I was in there, in addition to your wide-ranging selection of hash pipes and bongs, they also had quite a lovely assortment of sex toys as well. You should have seen the shelf lined with dildos the size of bedposts! Yeah, the Odd Corner "anchored" Exchange Street. What a classy establishement it truly is! And to think that this disgrace of an opperation was going to be located right outside the main gate of The Info?! This is as absurd and hilarious as a half-hour sitcom plot, but it's gotten so painfully old that I just can't laugh anymore. Now I'll have to walk down the street for my one-stop-shopping for drug paraphenalia, kinky sex toys and pornography. Too bad all the fathers bringing their sons to future Zips games at The Info won't get to walk their boys past The Odd Corner. This is so absurd it's surreal. What a freaking sit-com.

The Buchtelite published a story today about a Manny's March against eminent domain. http://media.www.buchtelite.com/media/stor...tmlemaileditionThis is getting old and this is getting ridiculous! Hey moron, just move across the street already! Good-freaking-grief! Just shut up and move! The U is already giving you more $$$ than your gross little dive is worth! Take the $$$ and open a far nicer joint across the street! Good-freaking-grief! He says he just "wants to be a part of the university." Well, as Lois Griffin often replies to Peter Griffin's dimwitted antics, "What?!" It's a tragic comedy that the U even had to use eminent domain on the crap located on Exchange Street! Those owners should have been counting their lucky stars that someone wanted to take their CRAP property off their hands! If Manny was really pulling for the further advancement of the U and city of Akron then he should have been jumping for joy back in August when The Info was announced. Hey Manny, Mr. Rocketscientist, I'll say it once again, slowly, "JUST... MOVE... ACROSS... THE... STREET...!"
-
Speaking of installing your own seat in The Info, when are we season ticket holders going to be able to pick out our new seat locations? Are they going to have a special tour/open house for us? I see that this year's season ticket package includes seats for next year as well, but I was hoping that those of us who've had season tickets for some time now might get first dibs on seating location.

zips getting another good preferred walk on in...
Blue & Gold replied to timmyboy's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
The RB from Firestone I was trying to think of a few days ago is named Darshawn Thomas. Wasn't Darshawn 'Stone's starting RB last year? -
Good points. I especially appreciate in game adjustments. To my mind that is perhaps the most important indicator of a good X's & O's coach. I haven't seen many (any?) in-game or halftime adjustments over the past few years. It seems like if the gameplan that we bring to the kickoff doesn't work then we just beat our heads against the wall for the rest of the game.

Ah, you're right. My brain's fried from worrying about taxes today. That's the game I saw: Firestone - North. -

Great then! I saw the Firestone-Garfield game and I thought this guy looked better than Garfield's Larry Dawson. (Though I wouldn't tell Larry that to his face!) -

That's not the Firestone RB who was getting all the hype this year (I forget his name). Was this guy the other RB's backup? What was Firestone's other RB's name? -
Humpty Hitchens Is Tough
Blue & Gold replied to mollautt's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Thanks for the update mollautt! You mention that he is "WAY TOO QUICK," and you are spot on. But what I can't believe about his quickness is that in no way does he ever lose control of the ball - he maintains the dribble - with BOTH hands. Additionally, not only is he unimaginably fast, but he can stop and pop on a dime. It's not saying much, but he'd bust both of my ankles if I was trying to stay in front of him! Honestly, it's sick. He's one of the best high school players I've ever seen. For those Zips fans who haven't seen him play, imagine Jimmal Ball with less verticle leap, but a better left hand, and a much better outside shot. (No offense, Jimmal... you're one of my all-time favorites!) -
Kyle Peterson to Walk On @ UA
Blue & Gold replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Well, dude... who is it!? -
Yep. Honestly, that's the worst QB play I've seen since I began watching Zip football about 15 years ago. Season ticket holders should have been pretty aggravated w/ the coaching staff for allowing a QB situation like that to develop, and Zips fans should be aggravated because you're absolutely not going to build much of a fan base with offensive play like we witnessed last year. And at such a crucial time in the programs history (Info Stadium). And with the damn Suckeyes playing for a national championship every year.

Blue & Gold replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
I think Rydell Brooks is more like 6-2, tops. Unless he's grown since high school.
