You can always count on Hilk for some memorable quotes!
-
Someone with more insight than I will need to confirm this, but I just heard from a fairly reliable source that CJ is, indeed, OFF the team.
-
Jacq's done. Rogers is the QB now. I only hope the offensive game plan this week is geared towards Matt as the QB, and it should be if the coaches are doing their job. I know many of you have seen Nicely enough to warrant your praise, but the little I saw of him in the Big 33 game didn't impress me too much.

K.e.n.t. Kicks off the Season Tonight
3rd&twenty replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
I found it interesting, and very telling of Cant's program, that during any of the ESPN games last night did I see their score on the crawl. At least not while my eyes were open. -
I hope that you are wrong as well. if they do go down I will blame the kitchen staff. it seems like everytime I go there they forget to bring me my food and it comes out cold. (one time burnt and cold) but the bar is AWSOME!! what they need to do is tell Damons to F-off and get someone real to run that kitchenAMEN BROTHER. Actually, I don't feel quite as strongly about the food, but the Damon's aspect certainly doesn't live up to the OBC aspect. Can you imagine combining the overall dealio at Barley House with the fresh-brewed goodness that is OBC? I just got the shivers thinking about it.GO BEER! GO ZIPS! TO HELL WITH THE NCAA!SeeTeeZip, aka OBC Mug #89I just don't like the Barley House on the weekend nights. to much music and stupid people for meTrue. Say, I wonder how many OBS mug holders are also ZN posters/lurkers? We've accounted for at least three here of late (me, JohnnyZip84, you). Are you aware of others on the boards?STZ, OBC Mug 89Well, I don't have a mug, but I do frequent OBC quite a bit. I prefer my SV Stout in a the 22oz glass.I have to say, though, a bunch of friends and I were there last Friday afternoon. They could NOT seem to get the games we wanted to watch on the TV's (ineptness), refused to put the Zips on the radio, waitress was surly and the rest of the service sucked. Beer and pizza were great, though, when we finally got them. I really hope it doesn't close, just for the beer factor. I'd much rather drink one of their brews than just about anything at the BH.

Post Gazette Fabulous 22
3rd&twenty replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Maybe LeBron can help JD recruit. See Paul Jones, QB. -
Since this game is not being televised, and for the life of me I can't figure out why you would play on Friday afternoon, post-Thanksgiving, and NOT be on TV, does anyone know if OBC at least plays the radio broadcast? I was thinking of heading down there to watch college FB, drink some beers and hopefully listen to the Zips while my wife shops:)

Go on any Sucks website and start talking about Michigan, USC, Florida, Texas, LSU, Michigan St., Penn St, Miami (fl), etc etc etc and see how class fairs.Again, tOSU fans are only respectful to us because we do not beat them. They do not consider us to be of any threat or anywhere near their level. I have numerous friends and co-workers who are tOSU fans and all day they trash talk with each other how bad the 'other' team* is.So get off your white horse about Akron fans putting down the Suckeyes. I commend your respect for UA, but I will attest that the rest of their fan base hardly shares your insight. If the day comes that Akron beats them, god knows what little respect for us they have will be gone.*Whereas the 'other' team is any team tOSU happens to be playing that day or has ever played in the past.OK, veering off the subject just a bit but I've been to OSU 3 times for games. 2 times for the Akron games and once for a PSU game. Each time I was dressed in the appropriate team wear, and I got more crap while there as a Zips fan than I got as a PSU fan. Much more! About Skip's about having several winning seasons impacting fan support and attendance: does anyone know how CMU draws? They've been pretty decent for the last several years and they have roughly the same circumstance we do. 2 Big 10 schools in-state plus the MAC schools there to divide the fan base.
-
The truth is that when OSU has a down season (which doesn't really happen that often) they may likely lose recruits to other Big 10 or BCS schools. Look what happened to PSU in the late 90's/early this decade. They had a few down years in a row and subsequently lost recruits, mainly to OSU. We're never really going to get any recruit that would/could play at the BCS level. Maybe a couple of kids get overlooked by the bigger schools, but the level is a notch down from those programs. As for fans, the new stadium will help, although I have a feeling a lot of those attending the first game(s) will be people that can't tell a football from a hockey puck. They'll be there just to be seen and to say they've always been a fan. Win and you may keep some of those people who may then become a bit more knowledgeable about the Zips. Continue on this mediocre line and we'll lose them after the first season.

Outstanding post. If anyone would ever visit an OSU site,(I know you won'T) you would see that most of the fans there have the utmost respect for Akron and are excited when UA does well. When UA was in the MCB, there were a few threads wishing UA well and talking about the game. This hatred is certainly 1 sided.I'll agree with Buckzip on this. Outstanding post! My personal story closely relates to this topic in that I was born and bred in PA, thus I have been, and always will be a PSU fan. That DOES NOT stop me from be a die hard Zips fan and having ZIps season tickets for the last 22 years and for the next 22 years, and so on. I can root equally for both schools. It is rarely a conflict, except for those times when Akron does play at PSU. Then I wear Zips gear. Plus, I live in Akron and quite frankly, would rather drive the 15 minutes to the RB than the 3.5 hours to Beaver stadium. I don't think we have to compete with OSU for fans. And we don't need them to switch alliances completely. Just try make them aware that there IS another team in Ohio that's worth rooting for. One of the guys that tailgates with us is that way. That's cool with me. He follows OSU AND Akron. It really doesn't need to be an either/or. I will say, though, that I also really dislike with the fact that the BJ gives SO much paper to OSU in proportion to what the give UA. In my hometown papers they cover PSU thoroughly, but also give pretty near equal space to Bucknell, Susquehanna & Bloomsburg, all of which are NOT D-1 schools on the big stage.

maybe we should do it to the zips thenI was going to ask this question as new thread, but this seems as good a thread as any to chime in. Does the NCAA require/mandate that the home team wear dark jerseys? If not, why don't we go with the white jerseys for the upcoming home games? They seem to be working out pretty well on the road this year.

Love Frenchy and JJ, but I'm still not sold on Stamms. That guy is a MOTO all the way and at times tries to be too fair. He does balance out Frenchy's homer calls a bit, but sometimes goes a little too far. I think it was during Saturday's game, he was going on and on about how the player from EMU should have done this or that, and Steve says to him, "well, it's a good thing he didn't make the catch", or something like that. My point on that is that it's an Akron radio team doing Akron football, you don't necessarily have to be completely fair to the other team. I love the fact that Steve and Joe are such homers. If you've ever listened to the Steelers on their radio network, those guys are homers all the way. Steve is our Myron Cope, God rest his soul.

Good grief! What an awful display of football. (and I'm one of the few who admits preferring MAC football to BCS ball). I watched live the 2nd and 3rd quarters (watching the replay now), and when I left I said to myself, "the only way Temple can win this game is if OU gives it away". Was I ever prophetic. Before this season, I penciled in the final two games, @OU and @Temple as likely defeats for Akron, but having seen Army twice and Eastern Michigan once, I feel both of those teams are a step ahead of either of the two I watched tonight. In fact, Temple tonight looked to be the worst D-1 team I've seen in recent years (first 8 drives - 60 yards & 0 pts). That QB was terrible. As the announcer said, Golden should have found someone else behind center. IOW -- I'm penciling in two Akron victories to finish the season -- over two teams outside the top 110. Akron could win 8 games and still not be in the top 90 in the country. On a positive note, I liked the Pink Out theme. More schools should do that. Pink Zippy?!I agree that that was a terrible game. I couldn't take it anymore and switched to Law & Order. Came back and it was still terrible. However, I did like how both teams put pressure on the QB, something we really don't do. If, and that's a big IF, our defense can use these bye weeks to get healthy and make some needed changes, we should have no problem with both of these teams. Did anyone notice that when they showed the MAC east standings, which had Akron on top, they did mention Akron but said Buffalo was the team to watch for. That was so nice of them to give Akron props.

I'll bite...Who is being benched because of coaching vendettas?Wallace Pendleton (allegidly) for one. Haxime, Rash and Harvey don't seem to see much, if any, action either these days but I don't have any reason to suspect it's for disciplinary reasons. Are these indeed vendettas or the fans seeing something that is not there? If they are vendettas then JD truly is a HS coach and should be gone. I fail to believe, though, that benching 4 of your biggest D men because of a personal vendetta is what's going on. Maybe I'm naive, but you gotta believe JD would want the best guys on the field whether he likes them personally or not. If these guys aren't playing, I sure hope there is a better reason than personal issues between coach and player.

Outrage! - Zippy named fifth worst mascot in country
3rd&twenty replied to MDZip's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I find it interesting that she references the Capital One Mascot Challenge. Zippy is the only Mascot to go undefeated in that competition. I checked the standings this year and all of them have at least 2 losses already. It's Fox Sports. What do expect. This is the same people that hired Tim McCarver. Worst color guy ever! For any sport. Makes our own Frank Stamms look like Madden. I find it interesting that she conveniently left Zippy's Capital One victory out of the blurb. She just likes Cocky's name.Oh well, we all know who's the best mascot. -
Well, count me in as one that does think that the band plays in large part in the color and tradition of a college football game. This topic was discussed in detail last Spring in a thread I started named 'UA Traditions'. It was an interesting discussion and good reading for those of you that did not see it.Football is a game that has many war metaphors. This is the reason that many fans like to hear some military music and see military marching formations prior to a game. It would be exciting to hear a drum line from far off and then see a military march of 100 or so in the band approaching the field of battle (Infocision). I don't see why we could not do this, despite what instruments we have in the band. Stage at the Stiles field house next year and march (parade) to the stadium to drums and an occasional 'to arms' military bugal number. It would get everyone very excited and involved. I really like our fight song and how Akron's band plays it. You hear the quality of the sound of our band when the National Anthem is played. At halftime the band could show off its musical expertise, but before the game we need them to get us all worked up.Yes, I agree that the band plays a large part in the college game. That's why I like college FB much more than pros. The band, classic cheerleaders, etc. I don't have too much to go on regarding the Akron band because we always go out at halftime and pound a few for the second half. But my wife, who was a band member, really does not like Akron's band. She thinks they're too harsh and don't have good routines. During the Cant game I stayed in at halftime and watched as much of the band as I could take. What I didn't like was their selection of music. Aerosmith, the Dave Matthews Band, etc. do NOT make good marching band music. But regardless, they sound great playing the fight song during the games and in my opinion are indispensable for the game day atmosphere. And to psych the fans up a bit.

I agree with you on this point. Sometimes I personally feel funny demanding anything since the fact is I did not graduate from, or even attend Akron. I moved here 22 years ago, bought season tickets right away and have had them ever since. I support the Z fund, attend games, buy tickets and purchase a lot of merchandise. I have never been able to understand why the community can't/doesn't support UA. I have no ties to UA other than a bunch of my friends went there. All those people who DO have ties and don't support the program(s) are the ones we really need to step up. And I personally know quite a few. But next year, with the new stadium, those people will be there acting like they've supported the Zips all along.

Akron in a close one. They are ready to take control of their destiny and that begins this week. They lost a game they should/could have won and won a game they could/(not gonna say should) have lost. Now is the time to step up and limit the mistakes and continue to make the big plays on D. I also see a kick return in this game (by us, of course). I will add one more note for the offense: please use Tuzze and Poindexter more. I know sometimes Poindexter has trouble catching the ball, but the TE is such an under-utilized weapon that by virtue of that very fact, should be a surprise to the opposing D. And Tuzze is a bull.Tailgate early and often!

Well unfortunately I am not "in the know" enough like you, to be able to locate them. How about some help for next time, or is this just a forum for people to berate others for their opinions instead of helping each other out?Believe me I have given that damned university more money than I have ever wanted to via parking passes and fees etc...and really did not want to give anymore, but it is my favorite college football team and I wanted to see the game.Just ask people. Everyone at our tailgate who didn't have tickets go them for free. They just asked around. There's always a few guys out there whose companies have tickets and of course, no one comes, so they just find people to give them to.But I still say $15 is a good price for D1 football. Not gonna get that at OSU, PSU, UM, etc.

I like this topic, too. I did like the all blue look on Sat. But I fear too many combinations will get us looking like Cant/WVU/Oregon with their 60 different combos. Kind of looks like a circus act to me. It could be their colors, though. The gold would not look as gaudy. I do like BC's uni's, though.Gold jerseys are too hard to read numbers. Purdue had them a few years ago, too. (may still have them?)
-
For Christ's sake, you're complaining about a $15 ticket! That's a sports bargain anywhere, crap hole or not.
-
Let's just hope the Zips turn it up to 11 on Saturday.

…in the bottom 10! Ohio at 7 and Can't, Miami and EMU on the waiting list. As long as we stay off of it, I'm happy.
