Go Charlie! It looked like he was finding his rhythm vs. the Chargers in preseason. Hopefully he has a good showing against the Packers and takes advantage of his chance to start again.

MAC Online Preview of the Zips
ZippyforPresident replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I think that was actually the first researched preview that I've seen for this upcoming season. And I've gotta say I'm already so jacked up for Akron basketball this year. The HOUSE IS COMING DOWN January 24th when we exact our sweet revenge. Hah, I'm basically jumping out of my chair here. -
THE REASON IS THAT WE DON'T WIN GAMES. I know that probably sounds petty, but if this team wants fans they are going to have to win plain and simple. I'm not going to say there weren't some positive aspects to today's game b/c there definitely were, but losing efforts in a rain soaked relic 7 or so plus miles from campus by a non bcs school does not draw crowds. It saddens me as much as you I'm sure, and yes, I was at the bowl pounding away w/ everyone else, but what I did take away from today is that there were a TON of new faces in the student section in the rain... things are on the verge of changing for the bigtime at UA... I was there in the early/mid Frye years initially and in comparison this student section is totally ready to explode... and the Rowdies play a big part in that, but I really do think the excitement on campus is essentially unparalelled @ this point in UA history. If this team starts winning some big games the support is gonna be there and it will DEFINITELY be there next season at the new stadium.

P-Mac's ABJ Zips - Ball State story
ZippyforPresident replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football
Dude, get off Jacq's back. He played a pretty decent game. It is absolutely true that all of the interceptions with the exception of one, were the fault of a tipped ball. As for having a fumble recovered for a touchdown, ask Todd Boeckman how that one feels (see: OSU v. OU). Those kinds of things do happen, especially given the rain and slippery conditions. The Zips moved the ball down the field with relative ease, especially in the first half, but unfortunately once they got near the red zone the receivers couldn't get a handle on the ball. Sometimes that's just the way the ball bounces. The problem is not Chris Jacquemain, nor is it the Zips offense. Honestly, I think Chris has been doing a great job this year. I'm actually very optimistic about this offense, those guys can REALLY play, and mark my words they will make quite a few teams pay this year. Your beef is with the defense and the fact is, this defense is really banged up. They're thin if not non-existent on the D-line and a good part of the secondary seems totally out of place. There seems to be no true leadership on the defensive side of the ball. We had leaders with Mackey and Corner in previous years, those guys knew how to take charge. IMO somebody on that side of the ball needs to step up and put the game on his shoulders. I'm sure I could write another page about the play of the defense but I'm not going to. I'm going to trust the coaching staff on that one, they know what they're doing, whether you'd like to believe that one or not. My only other gripe would be RACER'S inability to understand that after the period of each sentence comes two spaces and a capital letter in the first word of each sentence. Seriously man, not to sound like jerk, but I can't take a person's writing seriously if they don't take it seriously as well.... In the words of the immortal Brad Hamilton: "Learn it, know it, live it." -
Seems as though the link I provided isn't working correctly. Here is the link to the Zips ESPN page which shows the game on ESPN classic http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/clubhouse?teamId=2006 as well as the link to what should be the current television schedule on ESPN (of course you'll have to fast forward a little over a weeks time)... http://sports.espn.go.com/espntv/espnGuide

errr. Army. Whoa. Thinking ahead a little too much... 3-1 before Cincy.
-
According to ESPN AKRON V. ARMY this game WILL be televised on espn classic. I hope this will remain the case as I hope the Alumni assoc. and the Ohio Brewing Co. will be throwing another watch party in which I definitely plan on attending as well as bringing some new Akron alumni to the party. I know this topic is somewhat premature, but one can only hope that the Zips are at 2-1 at this point waiting to give Cincy the upset they deserve...

Speaking of Excellence in action, can someone get a photo of that billboard (this years K-ents slogan billboard). If you can't post it anywhere, pm me and I will put it up. We need another photoshop contest.Awesomely the K.S.Eww sign on Rt. 8 South is already gone. It has been replaced by a billboard for judges Elinore Marsh Stormer, Linda Teodosio, and County Clerk of Courts Daniel Horrigan (all democratic candidates (and I'm not saying whether that's good or bad in the interest of not starting a political debate on this board)). Although, it does actually pertain to summit county unlike the K.S.Who? billboard. Otherwise, I'd have gotten a picture of that billboard in the interest of it getting posted around here and having it defiled in absolutely every appropriate way. Man that thing pissed me off... Ugh, That place is a complete joke.

Zips Jerseys...where to find em?
ZippyforPresident replied to RowdyZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
I know that they HAD Zips Jerseys in the Barnes and Noble bookstore in the Student Center, many of them were Jacquemain jerseys I believe, but very sure they had some others (sorry, I wasn't paying that close attention at the time, I was dizzy from the cost of books haha). Although what is now on gozips.com might be what is left of the selection there, I don't really know. But, if you can find nowhere else that has what you're looking for, it might be worth a shot. Sorry I can't help more. -
Good job by the Zips today. More specifically, good job by the Zips offense today, they looked great. I think we have a good core of receivers this year and the running game was beautiful, Allen looked like a beast today. I'm not sure how much of that can be attributed to Syracuse's pathetic defense but I'll take the glass half full route and keep thinking our offense is MUCH improved from last season. On to the defense: Well... ummm... they did get a few key stops. Ugh. It looks like this unit really needs some time to gel and get used to what they are doing and what everyone's role is. I'm not a fan of the 3-3-5, but no one can blame it all on the scheme, the D didn't look this bad last year. I think it can be attributed to many factors and goes a lot deeper than the fact that we are without Bain and Lively, they may be talented players, but they are not the only answer to the D's problems. I'm hoping more game experience and some serious time watching film might help this situation out... I dunno, just my two cents. GO ZIPS!
-
Jaq gets cred. JD gets none. This game was ridiculous. Can we PLEASE show up against the Orange Men? The QB position is not the problem any longer, it is the D. Crap, we are a pathetic mac team. The mac is garbage. It hurts to say these things but it is completely true... WE ARE GARBAGE AND OUR CONFERENCE IS EVEN WORSE... Please get healthy Zips....
-
Frye is looking solid out there and so far looks to be making some good decisions. Also, the commentators have mentioned UA quite a few times. IF Frye keeps this up I think he's got a good chance to be Hasselbeck's backup. Go Seahawks, go Frye, go Zips!

Dix Stadium Vandalized?
ZippyforPresident replied to johnnyzip84's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I'm sure the can't fans will have no problem with that one. -
Seriously? This is a weak move by the athletic department, or the MAC office, whoever is in charge of the schedule here.It just tells people that we're second-rate. Why the hell should we base our schedule around another, unrelated school's game time? I don't care who you root for, this is weak. For the most part I totally agree with you... in an ideal world. It does seem like a completely weak and lame decision if it is succumbing to that school from the south... But maybe it is a shrewd decision to get some love from the media that UA still desperately needs. Regardless, I'll be attending the game so the TV viewing stuff means nothing to me, but maybe if the osu drones equate their Saturdays w/ an earlier AKRON game and a later osu game we can gain some audience... As long as it's nothing like the Can't State v. AKRON game last year where the all so exciting ending was cut off for the suckeyes pregame show.... seriously... no excuse for that. I was at the RB only to get home and hear from family that we were robbed an ending and everyone was legitimately pissed. The media needs to give us our fair share period.

Beacon's 1st Article on Camp
ZippyforPresident replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
The UA v. ohio state topic: Okay, for once I'll bite. I think the point for the most part around this board is that no one cares what ohio state does or doesn't do. Do I think that Akron's own newspaper should give top billing to our own university's athletic programs? Yes I do. Do I think that the students and alumni of UA should hold UA sports in a much higher esteem than all other collegiate programs? Yes I do. Do I think that far too many people in NE Ohio who are not osu students or alumni consider osu the ONLY college worth a damn in Ohio? Yes I do. Do I think the entire state of Ohio would cave in and stop functioning if AKRON stuck it to osu? You'd better believe it. And I can only hope that happens as soon as possible. Sadly many people in NE Ohio who never attended college in the area don't even realize that UA has a division 1A or FBS program. That is what sickens me. I personally couldn't care less what osu does or doesn't do. It doesn't have so much to do with whether or not osu fails or succeeds but it has everything to do with what AKRON does. If Akron's football program starts going having 10+ win seasons consistently and the media doesn't get a clue and northeast Ohio still bleeds red and silver instead of Blue and Gold then we have a major problem and I have a total gripe. Until then, unfortunately the sad truth is that the status quo will continue to exist. Also, you have every right to root for who you want to Zipgrad01, but as I'm sure you're well aware, on this board (as it should be) it's Blue and Gold or you walk the plank buddy. Haha, no worries friend. -
ESPN.com early bowl predictions
ZippyforPresident replied to RowdyZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
So that really large bird I spotted flying in the air today actually was a swine? Whoa. -
I saw this in espn's college football section and given the slowness of the board right now thought it might generate an interesting discussion on ZipsNation. ESPN - Face of the Program"Every football school has a Face of the Program, that iconic image you think of when talking football on campus. Here's your chance to help define who or what that is. Is it that fabled coach? A legendary player? A memorable play? A unique mascot? SportsNation is taking all suggestions as you help decide the Face of the Program.Join the conversation with your fellow fans below and submit your candidate."IMO one could make an argument for Jason Taylor who is arguably the most recognizable UA alum playing in the NFL. My other pick would probably be for Domenik Hixon who had one of the most memorable catches in recent Zips history with his grab in the 2005 MAC Championship and who also now possesses a Super Bowl ring. As far as the unique mascot is concerned, I don't think there's any debate about that one. Those are probably the best examples I was able to think of. What other plays, players, or coaches come to mind for the rest of you when talking Akron football?

I second the motion for "whip it" by devo. It's very akrocentric, it's a sweet tune, and as far as i know no other schools use it. I know it would get me pumped if i heard the band playing it. Also, perhaps the band could play "mongoloid" by devo when the opposing team comes out of the locker room? Jokes...

Just got back from the JAR and thought I'd make a few comments about tonight's game:1. It felt good to be back amongst the Rowdies tonight after spending the last few games trying to introduce various friends and family members to the enigma that is Zips basketball. Sitting in the bleachers or even in the lower reserves is nothing like getting rowdy behind the baskets. The rowdies do it right. Of course it was also a little disappointing that "the other side" was kind of sparse looking.2. This game started out pretty sloppy and it seemed like it was kind of tough for the Zips to get into any type of rhythm early on. Offensively there seemed to be very little inside presence. Of course as Coach D was saying in the post game show Wood is still "shaking off the rust." Of course all in all I would say he did an excellent job seeing as how he is still recovering from an injury that caused him to miss a considerable amount of time. Also Bardo looked pretty solid on the defensive end I thought.3. Middleton. Need I say more? He's back and evidently has forgotten how to miss. No complaints here.4. Unfortunately the overall team shooting percentage was still pretty shaky in the first half. Somewhere in the low 30's i believe. It almost seemed like the mojo from the VCU game had carried over. However, in the second half some shots started falling and it got better and as the Zippers began to pull away it looked as though they were gaining more confidence in their shots and playing the way we all know they can play.5. Tonight the beer is going to taste even better after KSWho and Ohio losses and the Zips record a third consecutive 20 win season. That's something to be proud of Akron, enjoy it, this is the year of the ROO.

 ... and to think the answer was right in front of us the whole time! Moderators - you may now retire the thread.Hahaha. Nice.

I would say the reason Akron is so tough at home is because we have a really good basketball team and Dambrot is one hell of a coach.

WE WIN! WE WIN! WE WIN! WE WIN! Never give up! Never give in!! All the way to the Tournament Baby!

First off Chris McKnight had a good game once again tonight. With Jeremiah out he's been stepping it up a lot. But the problem is he's got some really big shoes to fill. What I noticed a few times tonight was that Jeremiah's ability to kick the ball out is missed greatly, he is a very good passer and when he would draw the double or triple teams he often was able to find one of the guards open behind the arc.Second. Akron, in my opinion, has the talent to be the best team in the MAC and rightfully should be. Unfortunately who knows exactly how much of that talent is injured or just plain really hurting right now. Middleton is probably hurting a lot more than he leads on and is evidently going to need surgery after the season, so he's probably not going to get much better which is really a bummer with this being his senior season. Dials is in a similar situation with this being his senior season and having a hip flexor limiting his play severely, yet these guys leave it all out on the court every game playing on probably nothing but adrenaline and sheer determination. Wood is out and had probably been suffering from the torn meniscus for nearly a month, and who knows if McNees's achilles is still nagging him. The bottom line is this team is banged up and guys that don't have a ton of experience at this level are being forced to step up into roles that they might not be entirely ready for. Linhart and C. McKnight have been stepping their game up, but for the rest of the younger players their inexperience is very apparent at times, even though at other times they show hints of some serious capabilities. I think we can all agree that an at large bid has been out of the question for quite some time and that after tonight, winning the east is going to be pretty difficult to achieve. What it comes down to are those games at the Q, and in order to win those games the Zips have to play as a team. Coach D has to find a lineup that can play team basketball, can execute the plays efficiently, and can feed off of one another's capabilities and tendencies. I would like to see C. McKnight get more minutes and Linhart as many minutes as he can handle and then maybe find a starting lineup that can work best with those two guys. Maybe Bardo at Center, C. McKnight and Linhart at the 2 and 3 with Roberts at the point and Dials the shooting guard? Of course Dials is basically the leader on the floor so I can see how it is tough to take him away from the point.Third. NIU shot the damn lights out tonight. It's tough to beat anyone when they can't miss. Of course it does help when you have open, uncontested shots and NIU did have a few of them tonight, but there's no point in sitting here and wallowing in defeat. Hats off to NIU, they got the job done and the Zips didn't. I was just as pissed off as anyone to see the 22 game winning streak go down the toilet to a team that now has a 6-17 record but that's why the games are played, anything can happen on any given day and there is no reason to make up pointless excuses for it or to let it get to you, its over now and hopefully this team can take the loss and use it as motivation and prove exactly how mentally tough they really are. If this team can feed off of and learn from these defeats and somehow find their rhythm my guess is that our remaining opponents are going to be in for some hard fought battles and the Can't State Golden Showers are going to be in for the game of their life. And if Jeremiah is back and really ready for that one, Ham-for-Brains Quaintance could be in for a long, long night. Keep the faith and lets start a new streak all the way to the NCAA tournament.
