I saw this in espn's college football section and given the slowness of the board right now thought it might generate an interesting discussion on ZipsNation. ESPN - Face of the Program"Every football school has a Face of the Program, that iconic image you think of when talking football on campus. Here's your chance to help define who or what that is. Is it that fabled coach? A legendary player? A memorable play? A unique mascot? SportsNation is taking all suggestions as you help decide the Face of the Program.Join the conversation with your fellow fans below and submit your candidate."IMO one could make an argument for Jason Taylor who is arguably the most recognizable UA alum playing in the NFL. My other pick would probably be for Domenik Hixon who had one of the most memorable catches in recent Zips history with his grab in the 2005 MAC Championship and who also now possesses a Super Bowl ring. As far as the unique mascot is concerned, I don't think there's any debate about that one. Those are probably the best examples I was able to think of. What other plays, players, or coaches come to mind for the rest of you when talking Akron football?

I second the motion for "whip it" by devo. It's very akrocentric, it's a sweet tune, and as far as i know no other schools use it. I know it would get me pumped if i heard the band playing it. Also, perhaps the band could play "mongoloid" by devo when the opposing team comes out of the locker room? Jokes...

Just got back from the JAR and thought I'd make a few comments about tonight's game:1. It felt good to be back amongst the Rowdies tonight after spending the last few games trying to introduce various friends and family members to the enigma that is Zips basketball. Sitting in the bleachers or even in the lower reserves is nothing like getting rowdy behind the baskets. The rowdies do it right. Of course it was also a little disappointing that "the other side" was kind of sparse looking.2. This game started out pretty sloppy and it seemed like it was kind of tough for the Zips to get into any type of rhythm early on. Offensively there seemed to be very little inside presence. Of course as Coach D was saying in the post game show Wood is still "shaking off the rust." Of course all in all I would say he did an excellent job seeing as how he is still recovering from an injury that caused him to miss a considerable amount of time. Also Bardo looked pretty solid on the defensive end I thought.3. Middleton. Need I say more? He's back and evidently has forgotten how to miss. No complaints here.4. Unfortunately the overall team shooting percentage was still pretty shaky in the first half. Somewhere in the low 30's i believe. It almost seemed like the mojo from the VCU game had carried over. However, in the second half some shots started falling and it got better and as the Zippers began to pull away it looked as though they were gaining more confidence in their shots and playing the way we all know they can play.5. Tonight the beer is going to taste even better after KSWho and Ohio losses and the Zips record a third consecutive 20 win season. That's something to be proud of Akron, enjoy it, this is the year of the ROO.

 ... and to think the answer was right in front of us the whole time! Moderators - you may now retire the thread.Hahaha. Nice.

I would say the reason Akron is so tough at home is because we have a really good basketball team and Dambrot is one hell of a coach.

WE WIN! WE WIN! WE WIN! WE WIN! Never give up! Never give in!! All the way to the Tournament Baby!

First off Chris McKnight had a good game once again tonight. With Jeremiah out he's been stepping it up a lot. But the problem is he's got some really big shoes to fill. What I noticed a few times tonight was that Jeremiah's ability to kick the ball out is missed greatly, he is a very good passer and when he would draw the double or triple teams he often was able to find one of the guards open behind the arc.Second. Akron, in my opinion, has the talent to be the best team in the MAC and rightfully should be. Unfortunately who knows exactly how much of that talent is injured or just plain really hurting right now. Middleton is probably hurting a lot more than he leads on and is evidently going to need surgery after the season, so he's probably not going to get much better which is really a bummer with this being his senior season. Dials is in a similar situation with this being his senior season and having a hip flexor limiting his play severely, yet these guys leave it all out on the court every game playing on probably nothing but adrenaline and sheer determination. Wood is out and had probably been suffering from the torn meniscus for nearly a month, and who knows if McNees's achilles is still nagging him. The bottom line is this team is banged up and guys that don't have a ton of experience at this level are being forced to step up into roles that they might not be entirely ready for. Linhart and C. McKnight have been stepping their game up, but for the rest of the younger players their inexperience is very apparent at times, even though at other times they show hints of some serious capabilities. I think we can all agree that an at large bid has been out of the question for quite some time and that after tonight, winning the east is going to be pretty difficult to achieve. What it comes down to are those games at the Q, and in order to win those games the Zips have to play as a team. Coach D has to find a lineup that can play team basketball, can execute the plays efficiently, and can feed off of one another's capabilities and tendencies. I would like to see C. McKnight get more minutes and Linhart as many minutes as he can handle and then maybe find a starting lineup that can work best with those two guys. Maybe Bardo at Center, C. McKnight and Linhart at the 2 and 3 with Roberts at the point and Dials the shooting guard? Of course Dials is basically the leader on the floor so I can see how it is tough to take him away from the point.Third. NIU shot the damn lights out tonight. It's tough to beat anyone when they can't miss. Of course it does help when you have open, uncontested shots and NIU did have a few of them tonight, but there's no point in sitting here and wallowing in defeat. Hats off to NIU, they got the job done and the Zips didn't. I was just as pissed off as anyone to see the 22 game winning streak go down the toilet to a team that now has a 6-17 record but that's why the games are played, anything can happen on any given day and there is no reason to make up pointless excuses for it or to let it get to you, its over now and hopefully this team can take the loss and use it as motivation and prove exactly how mentally tough they really are. If this team can feed off of and learn from these defeats and somehow find their rhythm my guess is that our remaining opponents are going to be in for some hard fought battles and the Can't State Golden Showers are going to be in for the game of their life. And if Jeremiah is back and really ready for that one, Ham-for-Brains Quaintance could be in for a long, long night. Keep the faith and lets start a new streak all the way to the NCAA tournament.

Although it's a paycheck, I'm not a fan of scheduling games against top tier BCS programs, and with the new stadium coming I see no point in trying to schedule games at Cleveland Browns stadium. The objective is to build support for the football program amongst the student body, the alumni, and the surrounding community, and with a new on campus stadium that's a big step in the right direction. In my opinion our scheduling should somewhat resemble what coach D is trying to do with the basketball program, playing other mid majors and teams that are around our level that will play in AKRON for a home and home or at least a 2 for 1. Although there are more options in basketball I feel that idea might not be entirely out of the question for the football program. I think that creating a relationship with the Big East can be a good idea. The travel isn't too far for the most part and the Big East is a conference that is consistently putting teams into the top 25 nationally. Although we had a rough time vs. UConn last season I think a good MAC team can play with just about any Big East opponent. The main point however, which many of you have touched on is that we need to WIN GAMES. The key to putting butts in the seats is to establish a winning tradition which can only be done by winning the games you play. You've gotta beat the MAC teams if you wanna get a following. Win in your conference and schedule out of conference opponents that are solid or recognizable programs that aren't too far off from our level, who will play in our house, and you can establish a winning tradition that can be built off of. But the key is to keep the "home" games in Akron and to win IN AKRON. When people go to the games they want to see a winner, they want to expect to win, and see something that they can be proud of and unite over and say "that's right, that's my school, and I'm proud of it." I dunno, that's just my opinion.

Excellent job by the Zippers tonight and hats off to Nate Linhart. He's really been stepping it up as of late. Despite the MVP moniker I would say that he often gets overlooked by most of us fans. While everyone gives the recognition to the big three seniors (and they have earned it) Nate quietly keeps putting up really excellent numbers, like a double double again tonight. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that he might be the most versatile and complete player on the team. By that I mean that he has so many aspects to his game. The guy is definitely one of the best defensive players on the team, he's a scrapper and is constantly high energy, he can hit the three ball pretty consistently, he has great presence around the basket (numerous tip ins, including the winner vs. OU) and is a good rebounder, and a pretty good ball handler for a big guy who can play the three or four. That's my opinion and I was just wondering what other members of 'The Nation' think. Go Zips! NIU who?

This game was complete garbage from the beginning. I sure hope they're ready for Ball State or things could really start to get ugly. Blah. -

I guess if the last two games are any indication then we've got them right where we want them? I've got nothing else... Ugh. -
Manny should build a new place across the street. From what I've heard Manny is the one who opened Ray's in Highland Square next to a bar called The Matinee which is also a Nemr owned establishment. Speaking as a student I can't wait until the new stadium goes up. And yeah, the Plasma Center needs to go. I hate trying to walk past that place when its open. I can't think of a time I've walked past that place and haven't been asked to spare change , if I have a cigarette (I don't even smoke), threatened, or had a home bum attempt to scam me or my buddies in some way. I understand everyone has problems and sometimes people fall on hard times but hitting up college students for money is an exercise in futility. I just want to be able to walk to class or to the Taco Bell without having to make up excuses about why I've got no cash flow or why I can't sign their "petition" with my phone number and credit card number.

The thug from Can't who had to be restrained by the ref was #11 Jordan Mincy who had to be restrained from attacking Dials. There's a picture of it up on ESPN and the caption gives his name. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/photos?photo...ameId=280232309

Can't State @ OU on ESPN Classic
ZippyforPresident replied to Bleacher Bum's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
You know whats funny?.....the browns suck and pittsburgh beat you twice...ha ha ha love it. and went to the playoffs....just a serious question though.....are the browns showing off their super bowl trophies next year for the season opener?!?!?!?!?! hahahahaUmmmmm... Just out of curiousity, what does that comment have to do with Zips basketball, the OU Can't game, MAC basketball, or basketball in general? Anyway, I felt that OU turned in an excellent effort at home and their offense seemed to move more smoothly without Walther in the game, better passes and a good job kicking the ball out for open shots. Honestly I'm a little more nervous about facing Can't at the MAC Center now that they've tasted defeat in conference play, they're really going to be ready for us. However, I'm confident that the ZIPS will be fired up and Coach D will have the team ready to break out of the MAC Center with a W. But not to overlook tomorrow, lets remind the flunkin' falcons why we're #1 in the MAC!! -
Nice free throw shooting tonight by the Zips. A very physical game and a good road win. Back to the JAR for two. See you all there!
-
Wood's presence inside is crucial, as well as free throw shooting. Come on Zips lets finish this one off!
-
Sounds like a brutal first half. 35-29 Zips.
-
This game should be in triple OT right now. Can someone please explain why Dials wasn't awarded three free throws? Clearly he was shooting the ball. That was a bonehead call if I've ever seen one. Regardless, great effort by the Zips. Time to get ready for Miami.
