I think one of the most interesting stories here must be Shawn David Vincent who the site shows played for the Vikings and Colts for three years while he was 6, 7, and 8 years old. Then he made a comeback at age 23 with the Steelers.

From time to time on this site, a Toledo fan will remind us how much better they are than us. After conducting some research I am forced to admit that when it comes to football Akron is no Toledo. Akron completed their 14th year in the MAC last year. I’ll let you look up the Zips record over that time period to prove my point, but I’ll give you a heads up….the Zip’s record during their first 14 years in the league is not close to the Rocket’s record during their first 14 years in the MAC – Thank you Jesus. The Rockets joined the MAC in 1952. Over the following 14 campaigns they amassed an overall record of 45-80-4 (.349). This kind of sucks, but it looks good compared to their MAC record over the same period 20-59 (.253). Fourteen years in the MAC with two winning records (3-2 in both 1954 and 1957), six years with only one league win, two years with NO MAC wins (0-6 in 1959 and 1960). My point – in almost all cases it takes it takes time to build a good D1 program and Akron is doing so at a faster pace than did Toledo. By the way, the winner of this years game goes up 8-7 in the all-time series between the schools.

For another take on Big East pigskin expansion see item 3 on the following link. Not a single MAC team mentioned as a possibility. http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2006/Sp..._Storylines.htm

Rifle,Time is relative, but some might conclude that I have been around a long time. I prefer to emphasize that I have always been a sports fan, and have a good memory. Definately a U of A fan (was on a couple of nonmajor UA sports teams in the late 60s and early 70s), but I pull for every MAC team when they play out of conference, especially against the big 10.

Minor correction to mwilly's comment..... Can't did suck for a long time - perpetual MAC football doormat. Then they hired Don James, got Jack Lambert at middle linebacker, Gerald Tinker (eventual Olympic gold medalist sprinter) at wide receiver, and in 3 years won the MAC and a bowl game. Then James moved on to Washington where he manufactured another magical 3 year turnaround for them (from PAC 10 doormat to Rose Bowl winners). Can't returned to a fairly pathetic program, but the point is they have not "always" been losers.

In addition, FYI:I was correct about the program which is likely to piss off Clark Can't if he ever gets mentioned here. Don't pull on Superman's cape!
-
Also FYI:The post I just submitted included the 11th, 19th and 21st letters of the alphabet and apparently a program on this web site changed it to what is shown for the University located in Can't, Ohio. I wish this had not been done.

FYI:Here's what I found out about other MAC (and almost MAC) 2006 season ticket prices on school web sites. CMU and EMU made it too hard for me to find what I wanted so I am definately not buying season tickets from them. Prices are general public. Some (e.g., WMU require a donation to get the better (more expensive) seats.School Games AmountBall St. 6 $75 Buff. 5 50-90Can't State 5 50-65Toledo 6 164NIU 6 99Miami 5 75-95WMU 5 75-132Ohio 5 68 (but can buy 2 adult & 2 child for 79 total)BG 5 59-75Temple 4 36-180 (I believe they clear over $360 per game from their $180 tickets)

Coaching at Akron was my first big break
Zipmeister replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Well, I wasn't worried till I read the Captn's comment. Now that he has pointed out the key departures, I'm not going to be able to enjoy the 4th of July holiday festivities. What do we have to do to lure these two back to the Hill? -
Eric Haw Transferring - Could he be a Zip?
Zipmeister replied to Johnny Utah's topic in Akron Zips Football
I don't think the Zips need him. Besides the quality of reefer in Akron is substandard compared to what's available in Columbus. -
Whats wrong with those male Marshall yell boys. Who do they think they are? The football team?
-
Well now I KNOW the answer (and it's really interesting), but I'm not sharing cause none of you guys participated to this thread.

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=95237Thought you might be interested in the above link which includes lots of opinions on what the Big East should do regarding football, with no mention of any team from the MAC.

I have mentioned this before and nobody seems to have any info. Can anyone supply some on this topic before the discussion desolves to riflery not being included in the Jacoby Trophy standings? According to the UofA athletic web site, we have a full slate of 12 fb games in 2008. This does not include a game at Wisconsin on 8-30-08. However, UW's athletic web site shows they will be playing the Zips on this date. What's going on? Come on guys; don't make me ask this of somebody who actually knows the answer. I need your input.

If all that happens, no raise will be needed cause he's gone...and that's a lock.

Here's another hint for the Jacoby trophy. If Akron wins it, this would represent significant improvement over last year.Points are awarded based on each school's finish, with the overall total divided by the number of sports sponsored by each school. An institution may count either indoor track and field or outdoor track and field but not both. 2004-05 Jacoby Award StandingsSchool - Avg. (points/sports)1. Can't State-10.77 (97/9)2. Western Michigan-8.38 (75.5/9)3. Ball State-7.95 (87.5/11)4. Miami-7.72 (69.5/9)5. Ohio-7.55 (68/9)6. Eastern Michigan-7.35 (73.5/10)7. Central Michigan-7.18 (57.5/8)8. Bowling Green-6.75 (67.5/10)9. Here's a hint in case you want to calculate the Reese results for yourself.Points are awarded based on each school's finish, with the overall total divided by the number of sports sponsored by each school. An institution may count either indoor track and field or outdoor track and field but not both. 2004-05 Reese Award StandingsSchool - Avg. (points/sports)1. Miami-9.54 (66.83/7)2. http://fausports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/...otbl-sched.htmlHey, I think this is right up (down) there with Temple's schedule. 3 1/2 home games of 11 for 2006.
-
http://www.owlsports.com/sports/football/s...=Y&SEASON_ID=25You think the Zips 2006 schedule is the worst ever? Check out Temples schedule to see how bad things could be. Can you find a worse schedule for 2006?

AK - I didn't say common and preferred stock were the same. I said the term preferred walk on was probably invented by someone with a finance background. Anyway, you have to admit that "preferred walk on" sounds better than "another guy we aren't giving a scholarship to - first class."
-
"Preferred walk on" is a term used to make a "walk on" sound special. Sounds like it was made up by somebody with a finance background (preferred stock versus common stock). Good news is if either category drops out with unsatisfactory academic performance, the school is not penalized as would be the case with a scholarship player. Other terms may work as well. e.g., "super walk on," "extraordinary walk on," "wonderful walk on," etc.

North Texas: 27Akron: 24PerryGreen: You have the total score correct but the final will be Akron 34, North Texas State 17, and it could be worse unless your team dresses in Army's uniforms.

Flipthe zip is correct. Perhaps someday Zipsbandman will realize what a bargain he is getting. By the way WTF does thisn have to do with sports?
-
What the band could use is a signature song and routine like (forgive me) OSU's script Ohio. I suggest a script kangaroo and at the end a tuba player (I can't spell sousaphone) marches across the top of the pouch and zips it up (by bandmembers in two lines bending together as the tuba guy walks by. They may have to increase the size of the band to present a good likeness of a kangaroo (500 may do it).
