  1. http://www.owlsports.com/sports/football/s...=Y&SEASON_ID=25You think the Zips 2006 schedule is the worst ever? Check out Temples schedule to see how bad things could be. Can you find a worse schedule for 2006?
  2. AK - I didn't say common and preferred stock were the same. I said the term preferred walk on was probably invented by someone with a finance background. Anyway, you have to admit that "preferred walk on" sounds better than "another guy we aren't giving a scholarship to - first class."
  3. "Preferred walk on" is a term used to make a "walk on" sound special. Sounds like it was made up by somebody with a finance background (preferred stock versus common stock). Good news is if either category drops out with unsatisfactory academic performance, the school is not penalized as would be the case with a scholarship player. Other terms may work as well. e.g., "super walk on," "extraordinary walk on," "wonderful walk on," etc.
  4. North Texas: 27Akron: 24PerryGreen: You have the total score correct but the final will be Akron 34, North Texas State 17, and it could be worse unless your team dresses in Army's uniforms.
  5. Flipthe zip is correct. Perhaps someday Zipsbandman will realize what a bargain he is getting. By the way WTF does thisn have to do with sports?
  6. What the band could use is a signature song and routine like (forgive me) OSU's script Ohio. I suggest a script kangaroo and at the end a tuba player (I can't spell sousaphone) marches across the top of the pouch and zips it up (by bandmembers in two lines bending together as the tuba guy walks by. They may have to increase the size of the band to present a good likeness of a kangaroo (500 may do it).
  7. Glad to see your post ZipAlumn. I was beginning to think I was the oldest guy here. I was only a freshman in 68. So here's another oldie. It was against Northern Michigan in the Rubber Bowl sometime in the early 70s; another night game. Akron was leading big time late in the fourth quarter. The Akron second or third string offence bogged down at their own 10. I almost always hung around and listened to the band after the game, but convinced the Mrs to at least get closer to the car as time ran down. So we are watching the action walking around the top of the rubber bowl. A fog had moved in and was hanging just above our heads covering the bowl like a flat domed stadium. The Akron punter gets off a great kick and from our vantage point we can see the the Northern return guy, stationed at normal return depth, had no idea the ball was going past him because it has disappeared in the fog. It came down about 15 yards behind him and took an Akron bounce, stopping at the Northern 10 yard line with no return. That punt set a new Akron record for longest punt (80 yards) at the time. I wonder if it still is the record?
  8. Do you have an Akron U. football story that sticks out in your Mind? I have several and to help fill the time between now and next fall, here’s a brief recap of one of mine. Are any of you old enough to remember this game? It was around 1974 (some details escape me with age) but I was at the game and it was unbelievable. Tampa came into the Rubber Bowl a prohibitive favorite as I recall. They had Freddie Solomon at quarterback (later wide receiver for the Dolphins) and Leon McQuay (later CFL and a variety of NFL teams) at running back. The Bowl was packed; it was reported that there were 40,000 in attendance. I believe it. There was no hint of an aisle anywhere in the place, just people shoulder to shoulder. The Fire Marshall would have had a coronary. Anyhow, it was a night game and Akron kicked off toward the open end of the stadium. The Tampa return man bobbled the reception and advanced the ball only to about the 4 yard line before being dropped. Tampa’s first play from scrimmage, a running play to the left, resulted in a fumble which Akron recovered at the 4. Akron’s first offensive play, a run, resulted in a touchdown. The final score ended up; Akron 40, Tampa 0. It was amazing. Later that year, Tampa announced they were dropping football as a varsity sport and I always liked to think (even if it isn’t true) that the pummeling they took in Akron contributed to that decision. OK, what’s your favorite Zip football memory?
  9. this is old news. see other thread "upcoming schedules" for more info.
  10. With a big Z on our helmuts we could also switch the fight song to the theme from Zorro.
  11. one more............most likely to see low flying plane intercept high punt.
  12. OK, who is LO?Anyhow....I checked Wisc. web site and they have the Akron game listed on their schedule. Problem is that Wisc would be Akrons's 13th game for 2008! Can't find Syr., Cinn, Army, or Kentucky's 2008 schedules on their websites to determine who is now NOT on the zips schedule. Any info?
  13. First ever post from the Zipmeister...nationalchamps.net shows Akron playing at Wisconsin on 8/30/08. Hadn't heard of this before, but maybe I'm just slow. Also have some thoughts about filling gaps in future schedules with home games. Realize that return trips will be required for most if not all of these suggestions but according to above mentioned web site each of these teams appear to have room on their schedules for an away date for the years mentioned and I think most would be respectable games.2007 Rice2009 Colorado State2010 Fl. Atlantic or Hawaii (wouldn't mind a return trip or two to the later)2011 Boise State or Hawaiiwhat do you think?
