I don't think it takes a particularly smart person to hoard money at the expense of their employers.
I agree that hoarders are not particularly smart, but it helps if the employer is dumber than the hoarder.

Congratulations on having mastered the double negative. Clayton would not necessarily be proud.

Olympian Clayton Murphy Sets His Sights on Gold in Tokyo and Reuniting with Akron
...While Murphy says there's been no movement on restoring the relationship, Akron's new athletic director, Charles Guthrie, has reached out to Murphy's team and hopes to arrange a meeting either before or after the Tokyo games.
"I'm for sure willing to come back to the table and see what we can do about mending things with the university and make things right, because I think there's for sure an opportunity to continue to grow a program. It's hard to kind of deny that Akron isn't an elite program in the country and to continue to put limitations on it or take away support is just completely disappointing and shouldn't happen," Murphy said. ...
I was surprised that Clayton made a point to mention that Akron does not have an elite (I hope just cross country) program when he said, “It's hard to kind of deny that Akron isn't an elite program in the country and to continue to put limitations on it or take away support is just completely disappointing and shouldn't happen." He could have made his point without putting down the Akron program.
Maybe he didn’t mean to say what was quoted about the Akron program. I’m hopeful that is the case because I’m pretty sure he didn’t mean to say that everything about the Olympic trial race surprised him when he said, “So there wasn't anything that didn't catch me by surprise to be off the back the way I did and close the way I did."

"Or, they can put a good team on the field competing against teams that will draw interest while offering great tailgating, a clean stadium/parking and good concessions at a time AND DAY OF THE FREAKING WEEK that is convenient for students, alumni, fans and the greater community to attend."
You realize, of course, that this argument is too reasonable to ever be adopted by UA athletic administrators. It just makes too much sense so it is doomed from the start.
Just tell the rest of the MAC that the Zips are done with weekday evening games. That will fix it.

Or, "I intend to make that stadium and the team that plays in it the center of social activity in the fall for the students, alumni, fans and the greater Akron community."
This can be done. First, announce that everyone attending each football game will be entered in a million dollar lottery.
Of course they must be in attendance to win.
Do not make it clear that the payment will amount to $1 per year for a million years.
Figure 6 home games a season; that's a measly $6 a year to fill the place up.
If you think it would help, the payoff could be accelerated to $5 per year for 200,000 years, but now the U would be liable for $30 per year which may put off some university higher ups.
If the lucky winners don't want to wait for the entire payout they can sell their annuity to one of those outfits (e,g. JG Wentworth) that purchase them.
It's a win/win situation.
You are welcome.

There's at least one guaranteed G5 team every year
And if a rumor I heard is true (G5 selection will be based on team GPA) Akron has a decent chance of being that one G5 program.

Probably a walk on based on the offers I see
Interesting get. On Hudl it shows that between 2017 and 2021 he played for Buchtel, Massillon and SVSM; including all three schools in 2020!
247sports, where it is claimed he had offers from Central Michigan and Kent State, gives him 2 stars and has a nice photo of him in a Kent St. shirt.

Do you think we might even throw the ball to an "outer tackle" one day? Just dreaming with nothing else to do until fall.
I'm not sure so I asked my Magic Eight Ball and it replied "ask again later."
I remember the year that the Zips won the MACC they had a tight end that nobody on this board seemed to care for much.
I liked him; thought he was very athletic, but they almost never targeted him.
Then in the MACC game they did he made some really good catches and looked like he was ready for the NFL.
Why Akron has a habit (through multiple head coaches) of ignoring their tight ends is a mystery and a shame.

I'm willing to welcome him and give him a shot. I guess that is depending on the offense actually discovering how to use the TE as a weapon. That will be a new concept to the coaching staff. Either way he comes to Akron at a time when excuses are fading and performance, as defined by wins, is required.
He played tackle for Toledo and these skills should transfer nicely to coaching our outer tackles.

Well high grades are going to be a lot tougher to get from me as time goes on.
Now if he's the equivalent of 1-17 this time next year...
I agree, that would definitely knock him down to a B+.

Well lets fire the coach every year for not being able to recruit underclassmen, bring in a couple upperclassmen transfers, and win the CWS the first year.
Ted? Stepien?? Is that you???
I didn't say anything about firing the guy; my point is your evaluation of him is outrageously high. All factors considered, C- is closer to the mark.

I give him/them some leeway for being basically a first year team. Compare that to the 100+ year old football program that has given us 1-17 the past two years, and most fans give Tom Arth a pass and hope like hell he stays. We lost talent and a good coach (when he’s not dipping in the funds) to Oakland. So, yeah, I look at Sabo on the context of what’s happened here the last 6 years to the program.
Yeah we do need to play more regional D1 schools in non-con, those prospects should improve as the team does. Without moving to the sunbelt or out west for a month, you’re pretty limited in who you can play (after you clear the snow off the field).
Thats the context I look at the program with. If you want instant wins and MAC tournament runs, you’re going to be disappointed for awhile.
Giving any coach an A- or strong A for building the team that performed at a D- level is highly suspect.

The Zips closed out an interesting season with a 9-6 win at Kent State. Like the cherry on top of the sundae lol.
They finished 15-36, winning 29% of their games. Which is roughly like winning 3 football games. "He went there". That includes two wins against Kent, going 3-1 against the Bobkitties and splitting a 4 game series with EMU.
Coach Sabo gets an A- from me on building the team. Maybe a strong A. The former coach who went rogue and took several key players with him didn't help a whole lot. Let's just say I doubt we'll be playing Oakland U in the near future...
I'm looking forward to see how, with a full season of data and observation, Spuds continues to build the team.
You would give an A- or strong A to the guy who coached the Zips to 6 wins (and a few embarasing losses) over non D1 teams; whose team ended the year ranked (by D1 baseball) at 286 out of the 293 D1 teams that played a game during the season!!!
For that to make sense you are going to have to invent a brand new grading scale where A- is the worst possible score.
Fortunately, NCAA rules prevented the Zips from scheduling any women's softball teams.
Regarding future Akron opponents; Oakland (ranked 264), Northern Kentucky (253) and Purdue Fort Wayne (271) are exacttly the type of OOC team Akron should be scheduling (D1, relatively close by, and not very good) rather than teams from lower divisions.

I saw on Twitter Heydinger had a complete game. From the photo it looks like he can unleash a filthy curveball.
If you can tell that he has a filthy curveball from a single photograph you have amazing eyesight.
As teams start to qualify for the NCAA tourney it has become apparent that the Zips are only approximately 250 tragic bus accidents away from qualifying in the first year of their return to competition. GO ZIPS.

I realize Bentley wasn't a huge contributor, but the reverse more often seems to occur, with a kid leaving his original school of choice to "go home" to a school near his place of origin. At the end of the day, I don't think it's a great talent loss but it's not a good look.
As the preseason progresses I am becoming less and less enthusiastic about this squad. I need to figure out whether it it's my PTSD from the last two seasons or just the lack of anything positive news wise from the program. As I have said on here before, it is tough to get excited about the team when there's no indication of excitement from the team itself.
Apparently the folks in the athletic department listened to my mom who frequently told me "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

I hope we never post anything like that. Looks like it came from the Onion. How does watching a 65 year old man cast his line over and over get anyone excited for football?
Some people are going to be impressed by this; most of their line weigh in the 300 pound range.

Got a couple more verbals for the Class of '21 today. Walk-ons, of course. Probably won't bother even adding them to the initial post. But good luck, fellas!
Just for the heck of it I took a look at the Zips 2021 football roster. Not counting the 2 guys you mention (or any other late additions) there are 101 players listed.
What a disturbing breakdown by class: 6 Sr or R-Sr, 14 Jr or R-Jr, 24 So or R-So, and 57 Fr or R-Fr.
I haven't checked it out but have a strong suspicion there aren't many D1 teams younger than the Zips.
Don't think our youth is going to make it any easier to win games this year.

Can you explain the concept of a TE to me? I haven't seen that position at UA in the last 8 years. I've forgotten what a TE is. So, apparently, have the coaches and play callers. They may need to be reminded also.
Synonyms for tight end at Akron include: decoy, outer tackle, and really outer guard.
