Defensive Line 12. Akron — The D-line only mustered seven sacks last year, and men representing five of those (Oren Wilson, Dan Marcoux, James Harvey) are gone. But they do return two starters, Nico Caponi and J.D. Griggs. But who else? Isaiah Williams had a standout spring game, although nobody else has any game experience. Lots of opportunities here. They can't get much worse; last year they allowed 4.92 yards per carry and a MAC-worst 33 rushing touchdowns.

There are PSU players from NE Ohio who might want to move closer to home. We can also sell transfers on starting right away, where they might end up on the bench at a BCS school. It's really a matter of how many open scholarships we have.

MAC Football media day begins today, Tuesday July 24th, at 8:30 AM through Noon. It will be on ESPN3. I don't think coach Bowden ever announced which two players he was taking with him. If the format follows last year, Akron should have the first interview segment so our section will be early in the proceedings. Having Terry Bowden there might be enough to draw some national media interest. Coverage of MAC media day is usually pretty sparse, and it's going to be hugely overshadowed by the Penn State thing this year.

One one hand, he achieves the goal he has spent almost his entire life pursuing, but one the other hand it happened in what might be the worst possible way.

Thanks to a misspelled internet search and the magic of social media, I stumbled on to the news that 6'5" 275lb DT Ryan Kortokrax has committed to play for the Zips next year. A little digging tells that it's a scholarship spot, not a walk-on. From what little I can gather, he is a three sport athlete (football, basketball, track) at Wayne Trace High School in Haviland, OH. Not listed on any recruiting websites other than MaxPreps. What experts like to call a "sleeper" recruit. I'll trust that coach Amato knows what he's doing in terms of recruiting for his defense.

Dalton Williams will start, but redshirt freshman Kyle Pohl is the most likely to overtake him. There's also true freshman Tyrell Goodman and sophomore transfer (from Lake Erie College) Curtis Watson.

It makes sense if you don't have anybody else on the roster who knows enough of the offense to start, but plenty of freshmen who need a year to learn. Starting a young QB who is not ready is the worst possible thing to do if you have long-term plans.

Don't remember. I also wouldn't be surprised if Pohl ends up starting on day 1 or if Williams plays all season and we wait until next year to have an open competition between the many QBs.

The one day I decide to actually get some sleep, and I miss this. Anyway, it's a little disappointing, but not at all surprising. We now have no QBs with game experience on the roster. Also, it's a big step out the shadow of being Ianello's football team. As things stand now, I bet Dalton Williams will be the starter earlier in the season while a freshman prepares to take over maybe three or four games in.

In Stephen King's Dark Tower series, a post-WWII Akron is inserted somewhat randomly as the place where a minor character gets mugged and then kills the mugger with his brain. Standard Stephen King stuff, but it seemed weird to see Akron mentioned since King usually only names small towns from new England or major cities like New York.

The question is not what they should do, but what they can do. There is a very specific set of rules detailing what it takes for a school to receive the death penalty, and what happened at PSU didn't fall under that. If the NCAA does try to punish them, it would be overturned on appeal easily. The NCAA can't even give them a lesser punishment like lost practice time or recruiting restrictions or probation. Despite the size of both the NCAA rulebook and the Freeh report, there is absolutely nothing in either that suggests that PSU violated even a minor rule. The institution certainly lacked control at PSU, but it wasn't in regards to NCAA the rule set, so the NCAA has no recourse. The best solution is to prosecute everybody who can be prosecuted. Remove any guilty parties from office. To suggest that the NCAA should do something is to vastly overestimate their domain and power.
