    I think they're trying to eliminate divisions in basketball (there's really no need for them). I like it. Playing six MAC West teams in a row is awful to watch, and I'm sure the West teams don't look forward to running a gauntlet in the middle of the season, either.

    This year is essentially an audition year. I can see Porter handing off some responsibilities to the assistants and trying to groom them to take over.

    Considering that we finished last season with an RPI rank of 55, being ranked #70 seems quite low.

    Haven't heard anything about this guy since he decided to visit MSU the day after giving a verbal to Akron. Do we know for sure that he backed out, or did he just want to take a day trip to East Lansing?

    By 2014, they'll only have 65 scholarship players, most of their BCS talent will have graduated or transferred out with no way to replace it, and fan support should be all but dead (today's loss may have already killed a huge chunk of it). When we play them, they'll be FCS in everything but name. If we don't win, it would be an embarrassment.

    Only in terms of name value, and only if you're judging that name value by it's past. This is just the beginning of that program disappearing into oblivion.

    Attendance was 12,616, but student attendance made up more than a third of that. 4,000+ students. I figured that with the student interest so high, the rest of the potential fans would scale proportionately. Guess not.

    A better question is: what did coach Porter make when he first came here? We're not going to pay an incoming, unproven coach the same as what Porter is making now.

    I don't think either Portland or Porter intended the announcement to happen like this. I think the guy from the Oregon newspaper set things off and they were forced to expedite things.

    How can they announce a hiring when Porter won't sign the contract for several months? Or if he does sign it, how can the NCAA allow him to continue to coach us if he has overriding interest in promoting his professional club while in contact with our amateur players?

    I wonder how much of this is pressure from Klinsmann to get a pro job.

    The program hasn't progressed enough to stand on its own if he leaves. We're not UNC or Indiana, where long term reputation has created a prestigious head coaching position. We were just a flash in the pan. We needed to win one more championship to prove that we're not a fluke.

    Most MLS coaches make about the same as what we pay coach Porter. Very few make significantly more, and it takes many successful years in the MLS to negotiate up to that level. Captain has it right. If he leaves, it will be about going to the next level, not about money.
