  1. It is against NCAA rules. Proposition 62 has allowed student-athletes to work during the school year since 1998. Furthermore, they have been allowed to work in the summer. "The new Proposition 62 goes into effect on August 1998. It should be made clear that without it, players had the ability to work in the summer which some people may argue was enough. " True. However, you said it was not against the rules to get a job. It is during the school year. It is not reasonable for a student athlete to hold a 40 hour a week job down during the summer. Between summer classes and workouts, their time is restricted. I figure at most a student athlete could work 30 hours a week during the summer. 12 weeks x 30 hours = 360 hours. They could probably get a job paying around $8 per hour at best. 360 hours x $8/hour = $2,880 at best. Take taxes out of that and it isn't much money. They could do much better on the autograph tour or public appearance tour. Not many jobs work 40 hours a week for seasonal employment. $2800 is enough money to spend on things through the year when your room and board, tuition, books, and food costs are all paid for via scholarship.
  2. You're right. Know why? Because we are their first opponent during the terms of the suspension.
  3. What more important things would that be? Education? That's getting cut like a geriatric's lawn. UA and most universities are preparing for a 25% loss in state funding. Lord knows it's not going towards fixing or improving infrastructure, if the roads sewers and bridges around here are any indication. All I see are spending cuts to solve the short-term budget, with no investments to make such cuts unnecessary in the future.
  4. I think schools don't get penalized so long as the players leave in good academic standing. With Generation Adidas, they have a good chance to finish their educations.
  5. Fight through it, Zips.
  6. Oh, but it is YOU who is slow, BuckZip.
  7. If they want money, they can get a job or a loan like every other student attending college does. Nothing against NCAA rules in getting a job. Don't tell me they don't have time. We had a player holding down three jobs on top of being a full time student and an athlete last season.
  8. With this development, what are the odds that Pryor and a few otehrs simply declare for the NFL Draft instead of only getting half a year next season? Sitting out five games could hurt their draft stock.
  9. Not unless they got into a bar fight. I only really care about this if it means that these players get suspended for our game against them next season.
  10. The worst team we have lost to this season is 9-3 Dayton. Wrap your heads around that. I'm feeling that we're about to claim our own signature win. Zips have the hot hand in Vegas.
  11. I predict another formation shift. Our strengths will be in different places next season.
  12. Big reloading job on coach Porter's hands. But that's why we pay him the big bucks.
  13. Zips have hit 8 straight free throws down the strech and have pushed it back to a 17 point lead with a minute to go. I'd call that relatively mentally tough, especially considering the ref situation. Fair enough. At the time, all I saw was a lead slipping away in the face of adversity.
  14. Just can't catch a break in the 2nd half. This is where that "mental toughness" that Dambrot preaches but his players never seem to possess would come in handy.
  15. Need to turn into a major blowout. We have to keep some in the tank for Miami, our last change for a signature win.
  16. Akron's SOS is currently 30th. Miami's is currently 17th. That's out of over 340 teams. Not much difference at all. Is playing a schedule rated in the top 10% of the country not enough for some people?
  17. I like that idea, although I don't think Dambrot would ever do that to his seniors. I'm not sure Diggs is ready to be a starter just yet. But if ever there was a game to get that into place, it would be against Stetson. The quality of opponent allows us to experiment with the line-up a little to reflect how players have developed since the beginning of the season in preeration for the game against Miami.
  18. Couldn't agree more. And i bet you every single one of those players on our CHAMPIONSHIP team would agree. The 12th man for UA Soccer is huge. If people really like soccer as much as they are now saying, it shouldn't be a problem to come out and support the women's team. Exactly. I think this past season there was a package deal where you could pay $20 on top of your Men's Soccer season tix and you would get Women's soccer season tix as well. It's absolutely worth it.
  19. Want the women's team to succeed? Go to the games and cheer and be loud. How good would our men's team be if they played in front of 200 people? They would still be a very good team but I think our home field advantage helped push them over the edge. Just look at which side the large majority of goals were scored is on. Go to the games. A large crowd inspires the team to perform better and intimidates the opponents. It helps sell the program to better recruits. And it creates an atmosphere that draws in even more fans over time. Go to the games.
  20. This may be the slump-buster a lot of our players needed.
  21. Here's my question: When you look at the resources dedicated by schools with the best football programs in the country, does UA have the resources to compete at that top level? There's no question about soccer. It's already been done. UA is #1. To be at the top in basketball would require significantly greater resources. To be at the top in football would require astronomically greater resources. The bigger the sport, the greater the resources required to compete at the top level. What is the biggest sport that UA realistically has the resources to compete at the top level? That's the sport where the resources should be focused. So we should be a Baseball school?
  22. The mens and womens teams share a lot of resources, so investing in the mens team also helps the womens team See the stadium renovations for an example. It helps recruiting for both teams. The mens team winning on ESPN helps the womens team with recruiting as well. And that's where it all starts to get their team to a high level: recruit talent and winning the MAC consistently shouldn't be too difficult.
  23. Putting in a 70mph speed limit. It's about time.
  24. I don't know about basketball, but a few weeks ago I found the MAC football coaching salaries posted by USA Today. Keep in mind that Can't's new coach will make $300k and the other new MAC coaches being hired this winter will likely also receive a higher salary than their predecessors. Al Golden $513,867 Frank Solich $458,300 Rob Ianello $375,000 Bill Cubit $375,000 Tim Beckman $370,000 Stan Parrish $350,000 Dan Enos $350,000 Jerry Kill $346,812 Jeff Quinn $338,000 Ron English $315,000 Michael Haywood $300,000 Dave Clawson $205,000 Doug Martin $190,000 Normally basketball coaches receive less than football coaches in the FBS, so I think Caleb Porter would be in the upper half of MAC basketball coaches as far as salary. Also, as of 2007, the average MLS head coaching salary was $250k. It's likely gone up since then, but it's difficult to know how much.
  25. http://akron.scout.com/a.z?s=333&p=8&a...amp;nid=4792737 I don't know if we just wanted to throw our hat in there for the hell of it, or if our coaching staff has gone completely delusional. This kid has 44 scholarship offers as a junior. Fourty-four.
