CD/Game Exchange Being Torn Down
ZachTheZip replied to tbozeglav's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Better than an abandoned building. What I really want to see open up somewhere on campus is a place like this. Unique idea, and perfect for college students. -
Department of Defense gives the Corrosion Engineering program another $2.5 million Let's get that facility built quickly. If done right, it will become a huge boost to UA because it's the only corrosion program in the country, located right in the center of the rust belt. Companies across the US are clamoring to hire people that don't need trained from scratch.

No. We needed someone who has proven that they know how to run a football program as a head coach. How in love are you with Notre Dame that you believe that Ianello is at all qualified to do that just by virtue of him cleaning Charlie Weis' man-bras? Notre Dame is not what it used to be, it's not some great college football mecca, and hasn't been for 20 years. Stop living in the past. Notre Dame is just a step above the MAC, and a step behind the big Ten. Being at a "big program" just means that they don't understand what it takes to run a program that isn't big. At all his previous jobs, Ianello's recruits were falling over themselves to join a BCS school or Notre Dame. He didn't have to work to get recruits at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_Meyer If you do some research, life will be easier for you down the road. But you are young and prone to being rash. But since you are a Zip...I have high hopes for you still!!! ;-) Go Zips!!!! BG took a gamble and got lucky. Meyer excited their fans. Ianello is creating apathy among ours.

Prediction for Zips to go 6-6, finish 3rd in the East Also contains a quote from the new defensive coordinator and a gigantic picture of Nicely's head.

I don't know how many of you have seen the schedule poster for this year, yet. So, here it is: There are lots of poster design trends evident in that list I linked. Programs with new coaches always have them centerpieced in the image. Terrible teams always have the punter featured.

CD/Game Exchange Being Torn Down

After a little information gathering, I am pretty sure that the property on the corner is owned by either Subway or the franchise owner. No idea what's going in there, if anything. Subway has more than enough parking already, especially with no other businesses there, so I have to think something new will go in instead of leaving it empty especially with the new and future dorms to draw from. -
City hoping that UA will sign back on with Akron steam plant.
-
Now for some fun. Akron city council passes resolution to support LeBron
-
Elton mentions it in the PD. Also gives us a "puncher's chance" at beating Indiana, but no such hope against Kentucky. Also mentions the soccer stadium improvements, but only calls us "league favorites" instead of national favorites.
-
Optimism high, but struggles are likely.

TE Jack Konopka verbals to Northwestern.

here's the link to watch it live. Akron's bit lasts from 9:00 AM to 9:10 AM. The joys of alphabetic order. The whole thing only lasts three hours. I really wonder how conferences like the ACC can make their media preview last over multiple days without running out of things to talk about just a few hours into the first day. One good bit of news is that Michael Reghi will be the host. Another bad bit of news is that they still have no idea how to podcast, so if you miss it you'll have to rely on the media reports or someone who was awake enough to watch it live and actually remember what was said.

Steve Zakuani Night in Seattle
ZachTheZip replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
It was a great day for the last two Zips (and NCAA) scoring leaders. Steve-O notches two goals, and Teal Bunbury's KC Wizards defeated Manchester United 2-1 at home in front of 52,424 people. Sir Alex Ferguson even had this to day about Teal: "Their centre-forward [Teal Bunbury] was a handful physically. He gave us a hard time that way." -
Now that's how you schedule for football
ZachTheZip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
Two reasons. The first is that Cinci doesn't suck. The second is that our home game came in the middle of the two road games, while Syracuse is playing here at the end of the series where they could have easily bought the game out if they wanted to. -

Back on track... Toledo signs Miami FL to a home-and-home series with the Canes visiting the Glass bowl first, ensuring that they don't buy their way out of playing in a MAC stadium. Why can teams like Toledo and Buffalo get these great deals and home-and-home series with respectable BCS teams, while we are stuck using 3-for-1s to get Indiana to play here or the back end of a 2-for-1 for Syracuse. The only good deal we got was Cinci, and that was a gift from one of our former ADs. -
Digging has begun!

Stands at least partially up behind both goals now. I think they managed to find a way to fit the whole stadium in and not have to tear down the tennis courts. -
Athlon breaks down the Zips by position

That's almost identical to what was said about JD Brookhart.

No. But I am sitting in front of the TV waiting for the Cleveland news to have a story from Akron more than once a week. I'm waiting for them to acknowledge that Akron is it's own city and not just another suburb tied to Cleveland like North Royalton or Mentor. I'm waiting for them to mention the Zips for just 5 seconds on the sports segment after their 15 minutes of high school football coverage.

I want to be optimistic, but I'm more apathetic toward Zips football than I've ever been. I am turned off by rumors of an athletic department in complete disarray, a football coaching staff that is way too full of themselves, and the lack of any signs that either of those two groups are interested in getting their proven fans excited about the season. I was turned off by the process used to hire the football coach, the kind of qualities that they believe are needed to coach this team (hint: we already had a no-experience "great recruiter" who was a position coach way down the line in the failed Belichik coaching tree, and look how well that worked), and the emphasis put on being in the AD's circle of friends to be considered seriously. Ianello is already repeating his predecessor's mistakes (taking a transfer with a questionable past for a "quick fix", taking top recruits who never saw the field because of poor academics like Erick Howard, etc), ensuring that the program won't progress for many more years. The parallels to the early Brookhart years are abundant. I can't be optimistic and "give this guy a chance" because I've seen this before and watched it crash and burn over the past several years. The only difference this time is that Ianello didn't bring a few great transfers from his last job to help him luck into a MAC championship. Ianello thinks, just like JD did, that he can win fast and get out. Akron's problems run too deep for that to work. We'll be lucky to go 2-10 this season.

CD/Game Exchange Being Torn Down

Isn't there some tanning business still in there? Yes, but they've decided to start using natural sunlight, so the building had to go.. Funny. But now that I think about it, there is the new " artificial tanning" tax being put into effect recently. It's a good location, but so is that old carwash that was supposed to be a skyway that isn't anything at all. You would think that both those corners would see new business moving in to take advantage of the stadium and new dorms. You would think so. Maybe restaurants are weary of losing customers during the summer when most students leave, or during the winter when they are too lazy to walk to get food. Also any place that opens up HAS to take ZipCards. If any place doesn't, it will totally be ignored by students. Taking Zip cards isn't a problem. The Chipotles at Chapel Jill and Highland Square take them. The Sheetz at the corner of Main and Waterloo takes them. It's not that big a deal, especially if you're just across the street from campus. And losing students in the summer is a big thing, but other businesses on Exchange seem to do just fine. In the winter, with the new dorms being built on Spicer, it's actually easier for the students to walk to that location the Subway next to it than to walk around the field house to campus. -

Apparently we're going to get the smack-down from USC's transgressions. These are the kind of refferences i hate. A convenient whipping-boy, existing only to get trashed as the butt of jokes.
