  1. Good segment. I appreciate how candid RI is concerning tonight's lack of discipline/focus. That does give me a little cause for concern; we had waaaaay too many penalties last season. But it's still early. I'd really like to know/hear how the Lone Ranger is faring.
I agree, I learned a little watching the segment after the scrimmage. I understand why we are not hearing about the QB battle, but I would love an update too.

In the segment before the scrimmage, iCoach invites the former players to come by and watch practice. Any chance ZipsNation memebers can get an invite iCoach? One of us would love to come to practice and do a little write up to get the fan base excited. I think it's working in the basketball forum.

  2. I understand marketing as that is what my degree is in.
I'm not sure I believe you. If your job was to market the football team starting tomorrow. What would you do? Please don't waste any of your budget on dumb giveaways. After you answer, I wouldn't mind hearing D.I.G's answer. I think he has a gasp on the concept.
  3. Like the way he says at the end he wants to bring some swagger to the team.

I love these player interviews. Letting the fans get to know the players is a GREAT idea.

Makes me (the fan) involved on a personal level. I like rooting for someone that I know about.

Good interview also, I learned a lot. Good job. :thumb:

  4. Most people don't understand marketing. See the above post. Goodies don't equal marketing. He basically argues we don't need marketing, and then states he liked the marketing of the acme zip game and comes to games because of the scheduling. Winning is the best way to get people to a game?.....no kidding. Good/some marketing gets 20 percent more fans to a .500 team's season.

  5. ....Akron needs a hard nosed, no nonsense football coach; not a learn on the job rookie.
Keener did a good job of describing how I feel. But I'm going to pull only one of your complaints and try to address it. Rob is not a rookie coach anymore. Your right last year was a learn on the job rookie effort. I would give him a D-....but, last year is OVER. They haven't invented anything yet to go back in time and change things, so I'm not focusing any more effort complaining about last season. I am willing to look past last season and focus on what is going on in the present and try to look to the future. I want to see if ROB progresses this year. It is possible that he will get that much better. He isn't going anywhere for at least two more seasons. Winning is the answer.

One other thing addressing GZ overall statement. I get a feeling of "lack of excitement" from a HUGE Zips fan. How can a marketing department loose a guy like this? It amazes me year in and year out how the Browns can get their fans excited for another loosing season. What does our marketing department do?

  6. Columbus State Going to Skate?

Judging by the brevity of the meeting -- USC's hearing took three days; Columbus State's took about four hours -- that strategy worked. Though a July 13 letter from the NCAA's enforcement staff to the Committee on Infractions reveals that the NCAA will keep digging at additional allegations of impropriety, Columbus State may have dodged serious sanctions from the violations that stuck the first time around.

Because of that, everyone outside Columbus will say the Luckeyes got off light. They'll say the NCAA allowed Columbus State to skate because it is a favored program.

    7. Akron Zips

Coach: Rob Ianello, 1-11, 1-7, second year.

    Last season: 1-11, 1-7.

Offense (5): Junior QB Patrick Nicely (166-366, 1,753 yards, 10 TDs), a two-year starter, can expect a challenge for his job from junior-college transfer Clayton Moore. But finding replacements for three starting WRs and a starting TB from last season is the big concern. Three returning offensive linemen (Jake Anderson, Zac Kasparek and Mitch Straight) should give adequate protection.

Defense (8): This should be a team strength anchored by junior LB Brian Wagner (130 tackles, 2 INTs), but it must show up in the pass-rush department where returning DL starters Hasan Hazime (46 tackles), and Dan Marcoux (45 tackles) could use help. Zips had only 17 sacks last season.

Special teams: Only veteran P Zack Campbell (37.8) returns.

Overview: If the Zips solidify their skill positions during the first three tough weeks of the season (Ohio State, Temple, Cincinnati), the schedule turns favorable (VMI, Eastern Michigan, Fla. International) for a rise to .500 going into an Oct. 15 bye week.

Key game: Nov. 12 vs. Can't State. Could be the difference between a winning or losing season.

  8. But I give a lot of credit to KD for even trying to schedule MSU. The Zips are reaching the point where they should be able to handle at least one really tough game like that every season along with a generally stronger OOC schedule..
I remember KD saying for the last couple of years that we are not ready to play a tough schedule. When the schedule comes out I hope he comments if we are ready for that this year. From the sound of some, it sounds as though KD is ready to start scheduling "better" opponents.
  9. I also have an expectation this team comes out of the gate in a good way. Lots of early season wins.
There was one option I thought of putting in and didn't. Get an at large bid. Hasn't happened for the mac in a long time, but early occ wins are a must in order for this to happen. Is there a 5 percent chance of that happening for them?
  10. SI Article by Luke Winn

PS This should make Statistical D.I.G happy, all data is from kenpom.com. :D

    1. Terrell Stoglin, PG, Maryland

    Freshman points per game: 11.4

Percent minutes played in 2010-11: 53.8

Percent of team possessions used: 26.9

    Offensive Efficiency Rating: 105.2

    2. Deshaun Thomas, SF/PF, Columbus State

    Freshman points per game: 7.5

Percent minutes played in 2010-11: 34.9

Percent of team possessions used: 27.3

    Offensive Efficiency Rating: 115.0

    3. Josh Smith, C, UCLA

    Freshman points per game: 10.9

Percent minutes played in 2010-11: 52.3

Percent of team possessions used: 26.3

    Offensive Efficiency Rating: 110.2

    4. Javon McCrea, PF, Buffalo

Freshman points per game: 11.8 ppg

Percent minutes played in 2010-11: 53.5

Percent of team possessions used: 28.5

    Offensive Efficiency Rating: 111.1

Following in the footsteps of Faried, McCrea looks like the next undersized, Newark-bred forward

who'll make a huge impact in a smaller conference. He didn't turn 18 until Nov. 5 of last year and

is just 6-foot-6, but his per-minute numbers in the MAC were amazing. McCrea had an excellent

efficiency rating despite his elevated usage, plus ranked fifth nationally in offensive rebound percentage (17.0)

and 50th in block percentage (8.5). Had McRea cracked the U.S. Under-19 roster for the FIBA world

championships -- he was one of the final cuts from the camp in Colorado Springs -- he wouldn't be

so far under the radar heading into his sophomore year.

    5. Sean Kilpatrick, SG, Cincinnati

Freshman points per game: 9.7 ppg

Percent minutes played in 2010-11: 51.2

Percent of team possessions used: 24.2

    Offensive Efficiency Rating: 112.4

  11. Could you please produce the statistical record that states that Diggs lead the Zips in three point

percentage? I have in my possession the 2011 Post Season Media Guide. In it I find that player who averaged

39.2% was Brett McClanahan. In second place was Brett McKnight at 38.7%.

    Quincy Diggs .390 (ESPN)

    Brett McClanahan .389 (ESPN)

    Brett McKnight .385 (ESPN)

    Same stats here (CBS Sports)

    ...and here (Rivals)
