  1. ...interesting to see if "Paul Nicely" can hold onto the job after a mediocre season full-time in 2011
As soon as I read "Paul" I immediately stopped reading and disregarded everything before.

You can mess up a few things, but to mess up the returning starting QB!?!?

  2. As I said earlier, the one thing I am absolutely certain of is that they are going to be more entertaining and fun to watch.

The increased interest from fans who haven't attended many Zips basketball games in the past is well-founded.

I'll take that. What a refreshing change that would be for the fans.....and another MAC title....and an upset win over a Top-25 team. That has to happen sometime, doesn't it?

Me too. That's what gets me to more games, getting the ball quickly down the floor and into an offense, fast breaks, scoring points. THAT's what I want to see. I've walked out of the JAR when the Zips have won 59-58 and I felt like I lost. If I'm going to watch our PG turn around at half court and dribble the ball backwards to the three point line every trip down the floor, I would rather sort my socks at home and listen on the radio.
  3. Consider this: Last season Diggs was easily the best athlete on the team. This season Q would be lucky to rank as fourth best. Fifth is most likely. Figure it out. Oh, wait, you have not seen a single practice.
I really appreciate your practice updates that you give. I wouldn't get them anywhere else. But as the wise Mr Iverson once said "what are we talkin bout here ya'll, practice?... not a game, practice!?!" One of my favorite parts of last year was watching Q progress and eventually turn into a guy that Dambrot was calling clear outs for at the end of halves in the MAC tournament!?! I did see Q's potential early in the season, so maybe you are seeing the same potential in all the new guys. If there are four more guys that are going to contribute Q's kind of effort to this up and coming team/season, I'll be very surprised. Until I see these guys perform in a game time situation I'm going to be a little hesitant to start "crowning their a$$es". I'll be happy if KD can knock off a big OCC opponent. That will make me even more excited for March.
  4. I understand GP1's perspective, but I think it's a little stupid to end practice this way.

I would agree that it would be stupid to do so every day.

I know an NFL team that ends each week with the GL drill. Not one injury to my knowledge in my lifetime.
  5. EA from the PD writes this about the team

The rest of Akron's 2011-2012 team is preparing for a five-game trip to Canada, beginning Wednesday. Practices began Aug. 1. So far, the play of both 6-7 Nick Harney from Benedictine and 6-7 Demetrius Treadwell from Euclid has drawn raves, as this Akron team starts to look like Dambrot's more athletic teams when he was head coach at Central Michigan and Ashland. "No question we are going to be a much, much better rebounding team with those two,'' assistant Dan Peters said after a recent workout. We don't have the sure first-round draft pick. Other than that, this is the kind of roster we always had at Cincinnati.'' Peters was a longtime assistant to Bob Huggins when the now-West Virginia head coach was at Cincinnati.

  6. Not many comments so I guess if nobody has anything to bitch about, they don't say anything.
Article was posted/buried 12 hours earlier in this thread also. Video 5 also address some of the same that was written in the article (also in the included thread). Johnny noticed the confidence that iCoach was exhibiting in the video, I have to say he does almost seem happy/excited. :ninja:
  7. We may be one year away from top 10/16 in nation, but we're not too far off from top 20/25 this year...
Do they serve beverages at these practices or do you guys bring your own?

This thread is the best Akron basketball marketing I have seen since the Huggins Showtime poster.

You guys probably sold me on 2 more early season games that I normally listen to on the radio. I got to see this team in action!

  8. The Zips’ practice Aug. 20 is free and open to the public. It will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at InfoCision Stadium and is a regular practice, not a scrimmage. Afterward, players will be available for autographs and photographs. In addition, various attractions will be held inside and outside the stadium, including inflatables and face-painting.

Again, I'm out of town on the 20th, can a ZN member give me some notes from this?

  9. Will they be able to in game situations? I'll answer my own question when mac play starts.

    When MAC play starts?

Yeah, I get fooled sometimes by KD. He seems to coach different when it comes to mac play. We get into mac play and his rotations seem to change. By then we find out who and who we can't count on when it is crunch time. I think this is how we discovered Q could ball. Some first year players excel in KD's system (Q), some fall behind and we don't hear from them the rest of the season (Egner). We have plenty of first year players that some are banking on them making contributions. I never get to high or low until we get a few games into the mac schedule. Plus we'll be adjusting to some kind of injury to someone by then. If we knock off a favorite OOC top 50 team on the road, I reserve the right to start getting excited before mac play though.
  10. Perhaps the best news for Zips fans is that it appears we will no longer be able to complain about a slow-paced Zips halfcourt game. All of these guys can run, jump and score...
Will they be able to in game situations? I'll answer my own question when mac play starts. I would like some member of the media to ask KD this question on record before the season starts. It's great to have "buzz" going in August. I'm hoping it's going to be an up tempo fun exciting basketball season.

Now, for the pessimists, there are no guarantees. While it's nice that all these players looked so promising in practice, it doesn't mean they will look that good against tough opponents. And that's just individual player performance. Team chemistry will be criticial. How do all the pieces fit together? Will they all make good game decisions about when to pass and when to shoot? Will they have a slow start, get demoralized and underachieve? These are all real possibilities that happen to many college teams every season.
Your right. You can also include coaching. Will we be playing the right players at the right spot and time. Will we have the proper defense and offense called at the right time of the game. Good plays drawn up after TOs. Will our staff have our players prepared for the upcoming opponent and put them in a position to succeed. I would hope we progress in this area as well.
  11. Nice breakdown on the enemy in the PD.

    QB

Whether Miller, who has the most talent, most hype and is probably the most likely candidate, will be ready. "I hope so," Fickell said. "I think he has a lot of similar qualities to [Pryor] in what he can do as a football player." Dr Z warned of this in January.

    RB

Smith, a bowl practice star, can emerge as the big back. Whether Berry, a friend of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson from their high school days in Florida, is ready to explode. "Both of us got that electricity," Robinson said. "He can be an impact player."

    WR

Senior DeVier Posey is the only option with real experience, and he's suspended. Sophomore Corey "Philly" Brown is fast, but still young. Given the inexperience, an incoming freshman like Devin Smith should have a shot to earn playing time.

    OL

Brewster is an All-American candidate. Left tackle Mike Adams is suspended. Right tackle J.B. Shugarts believes his foot problems of last year are behind him. Sophomore Andrew Norwell will fill in at left tackle while Adams is out. The top seven are solid and then there's a major dropoff, and a few injuries could really hurt.

    DL

Nathan Williams and John Simon are among the best in the Big Ten. Johnathan Hankins intrigues everyone, and Adam Bellamy and Garrett Goebel look ready to contribute in major ways.

    LB

Senior Andrew Sweat could start at any position, but will hold down the weakside. Etienne Sabino and Storm Klein are solid options in the middle. The one-year suspension of Dorian Bell and transfer of Jonathan Newsome opens holes in the depth chart.

    Secondary

Junior Travis Howard will be the top cornerback and looks ready for a breakout year. Fickell likes the growth of junior safety Orhian Johnson, picking him as one of the players who represented the Buckeyes at the Big Ten meetings in Chicago. There's some talent and depth but a lot of questions.
