THE GOOD — Akron is first in the MAC in scoring defense with 22.3 points allowed per game and in rushing defense with 98 yards allowed per game. The Zips are also great in situational defense, allowing five red zone touchdowns on 11 opportunities and held offenses to 29.8% successful on third down. THE BAD — Akron has only made five trips into the red zone in three games. THE UGLY — The offense is only converting 34.9% of their third downs.

It doesn't sound too positive listening to these comments.

A few other points made during the press conference that caught my attention. Coach Bowden commented that an important matchup this Saturday will be the receivers against the RedHawks defensive backs. According to coach, the RedHawks play a lot of man coverage, and he explained how important it will be for the receivers to win their one on one battles, and get open for Kato. Coach Bowden "Kato can throw the football, we have to have receivers get open." I'll have an eye on the receivers this week to see who is getting open. One thing that I have noticed since the end of last season is Jamal Davis. Coach Bowden remarked that Jamal has a motor that doesn't quit. He plays every down at full throttle. I've always appreciated that about him. Coach also commented that Josh Ward was starting to come on. I really enjoy watching Josh after the team makes a big play, especially on third down as the defense comes off the field. His enthusiasm is contagious. I'm extremely entertained watching this defense, anticipating a big play on every snap of the ball.

Kato only had 209 yards combined for the game. The Zips only had six penalties. Ulysees lead the team with twelve tackles, and the Zips lost by 13. No winners this week.

A little? I would say that is a lot. Love it. ??

"Iowa State receiver Hakeem Butler caught five passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns against No. 5 Oklahoma. Coach Bowden said if Oklahoma didn’t have a defensive back that could cover the 6-foot-6 Butler, he’s not sure his team does, either." I hope the answer to this question continues to be an effective/creative pass rush. I thought they did a nice job last week.

Shawn broke his fibula, and had a cast and was on crutches at the end of the game. He was supposed to have surgery this week. He will miss the remainder of the season, but wants to try to come back next season if possible.

0-2 on FG attempts vs Zips. Missed a 44 and a 45 yarder. 5-5 on extra points though.

College sports madness awards Brian Bell. Kato named to Davey O'Brien Great 8 list for week 3. This week’s eight honorees, as determined by voting from the award’s selection subcommittee, are: Anthony Brown (Boston College), Alan Bowman (Texas Tech), Taylor Cornelius (Oklahoma State), Dwayne Haskins (Ohio State), Kelvin Hopkins, Jr. (Army), Kyler Murray (Oklahoma), Kato Nelson (Akron), and Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama).

I do. Kato Nelson was 22-of-38 passing for 322 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and added 45 yards rushing to help Akron beat Ohio 37-34

Not that any ZipsNation member wouldn't have guessed, but Alvin Davis, has earned Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the East Division. Is there an award for all the conferences? I didn't watch every game, but I can't imagine a defensive player accomplishing more this weekend. I'll mention this again, Alvin Davis stole (intercepted, and probably scored) Brian Bell's defensive player of the week award.
