  1. Remember that people are paid good money to come up with marketing and promotion plans. You would think that they would do more cross promotion seeing as zips fans are a pretty niche market. Hell they should just mail some lesser game GA basketball tickets to football season ticket holders. Doing so would add some perceived value and sense of membership to being at least a single sport season ticket holder. With a little creativity they could do much more while spending very little. They need to win games on the field and take care of business off.
I wonder how successful the "pick three" promo was with football? I thought that was a good idea. I would like to see something done like that with basketball. Maybe you give a basketball "coupon" away with the football season tickets. One free GA to any game before the Ken+ game. This way you don't have extra mailing cost, you reach every Zips football fan, you make them attend a game early enough you might get repeat fans later in the season. I would also cross reference the alumni that are signed up on the alumni site that live within 30 miles and offer the same type of "coupon"But the best way to increase attendance is a long term plan by getting more students to the game. Those students become lifetime fans like a lot of us on this site. You don't know how many alumni I come across that didn't go to one bb game or football game while attending, and don't now.Okay...I'm using the emoticon on myself now after reading my post back. :horse:
  2. Don't buy it. It's a diversion to keep you from finding real solutions to the problems of the world, even those as mundane as lack of interest in a sports team. Media folks are just working stiffs like all the rest of us who've finished up schooling and moved into the real world of trying to earn a living. As in every other profession, there are good, bad and average media. But they are not the source of the world's problems. Searching for scapegoats is not part of the solution. It's part of the problem.
With proper marketing from the university, they can use the media (paper/radio/tv) to help their own cause. IMO that is where we need to focus our energies. The "media" is looking for good things to cover. Sometimes the team creates the buzz and the "media" has to cover it, sometimes (in our case), our marketing department has to create the buzz for the media for the fan to get excited to attend the events.
  3. There are quite a few Akron fans who don't do this because they get crap for it. "Why are you an Akron fan?" "Who cares about the Zips?" Stuff like that. I try to wear something Zips-related everywhere I go, whether it's a hat or a t-shirt or a tie. It's the small things done collectively that add up.
What!?!? Where are you hanging out? Ken+? I wear Akron stuff more than any other sports team. I have NEVER had anybody say something to me. Steeler stuff, yes, Akron stuff, no.edit-I take that back, I wore a Charlie Frye Akron jersey to a Browns game in his rookie season, while walking through the munny lot fans chanted "a-hole, a-hole" This was not because they were anti-Akron, just ignorant fans who didn't know that Frye was on the Browns.
  4. Just last week 1350 started a new radio program on 1350 between 3-6 pm, M-F. This is hosted by a local guy, Jon M. He is a UA grad.On his opening show he commented that the program will be dedicated to North East Ohio teams....including the Zips and they will avoid the national sports scene.Unfortunately, he doesn't know anything about the Zips and his partner has never been to a game at the JAR. So much for the local flavor...And you guessed it, they are Buckeye fans willing to talk all day about them...
That can change if ZipsNation starts calling him and asking questions about the Zips. Jon Marochino & Todd Fisher Show Call the show 1.866.372.13504577_12630879492.JPG
  5. Even the NFL is feeling the pinch from the down economy.
CBS is reportedly charging between $2.5 million and $2.8 million for a 30-second ad during the game, TNS said. That's down from the $3 million that NBC fetched in 2009.
The economy has forced the overpriced to get lean. Comparing super bowl commercial cost to an Akron basketball ticket price is apples and oranges. The economy should have little to do with the attendance at an Akron basketball game. I know a few of my friends out of work looking for low cost entertainment. They have no idea about Akron basketball. How would they ever know? Why not take advantage of the current economic situation to advertise the product as such...affordable sports entertainment? How about getting more students to the game. I counted 37 at the RI game. Yes I realize the semester has not started, but plenty of students live close enough.
  6. Boise State is my #1
Alabama plays in the toughest conference in college football. They go undefeated beating many ranked opponents along the way. They smoke the number 1 team in the country in their conference championship game. They beat the number 2 team in the country by double digits and you think Boise State is #1? I really don't get it?
  7. Think about Falknor, but in a more well rounded (perhaps that's a poor description) hoops player. Euton has the potential to be that type of contributor. Big so he can bang inside and guard bigs .. but a reliable shooter who can stroke it from outside, forcing the defense to stretch a little, giving Nik & Zeke more room to work. I remember a BG game at the JAR when Falknor was a senior .. he was in the midst of a crazy hot streak that season, I think he went 7 of 8 or something like that and forced Dakich to keep sitting his bigs (Matella I think) down because they couldn't, or wouldn't, get on the perimeter to guard a 6-9 guy like Falknor. He killed BG that night. Falknor shot in the neighborhood of 44% from outside that year, higher than his overall percentage. The difference between Falknor and Euton is Euton's overall basketball experience, more athleticism, and a determination to be a good defender. If Euton brings even close to the outside prowess that Falknor had and the reviews indicate Euton has .. it will add to the Zips offensive options tremendously.
    Couldn't agree more, when I
, Falknor is EXACTLY who I think of. I hope he shoots like Falknor, but is more athletic. That dude could hit a three anywhere on half a court. Hopefully Euton is a better student too.
  8. Ronnie Steward-Backup PG:B-What we need from him in conference play: If he can give us 10-15 minutes a night of solid PG play, running the offense efficiently and staying with his man on defense I will be perfectly fine with it.
Tuesday was the first time I got to see Ronnie play. His footwork on defense impressed me. I'm rooting for him to work hard and take over the PG position. I haven't seen enough to know if this can be true or not.
  9. Maybe the Zips problem is this simple, and I have been saying it for years. They play a defensive game. When you play an offensive game it is very simple. You focus on putting the little orange ball through the little orange ring. Outscore the other team and you win.
+.5I have to think about this one for awhile... Is this why I enjoyed Huggins teams?...hmmmm
  10. #1: On McNees. At some point this season, you'll realize that Steve is the best PG on the team.
We are in trouble. I watched him dribble at the top of the key for 25 seconds last night with his back to the hoop looking left, dribble off foot, recover basketball, look right, dribble dribble dribble, look left, (back still to the hoop) dribble dribble dribble, look right, dribble off knee, recover, dribble dribble dribble, pass the ball high up top with seconds on the shot clock forcing into a bad shot.Your statement might be right, but for the love of gawd we have GOT to find somebody that can run the point.
  11. Nikola needs to completely change his free throw motion. Stop shooting from way above your head like that. Shoot from the elbow.Dambrot got flat out-coached last night. I thought at halftime there was one defensive adjustment each team could make that would win them the game. For Rhode Island it was backing out of the full court pressure and playing in a half court set. Their full court pressure was completely ineffective, but when they went into a half court they seemed to confuse the Zips. For us, I felt we should have come out of the locker room playing a 2/3 zone and stick with it until the Rams show us they can shoot over it.
+2Defensive halftime adjustment won RI that game. Dambrot made the comment after the game "we prepared all week for the press, it surprised us when they backed out"
  12. It's OK to admit that the Steelers are a passing team now.
I can admit it, and also realize I will not be watching them play next week because of it. I think Nicely is going to be a good one with the Zips, but I sure hope we can run the ball when we need to. Ball control and clock control depend on it.
  13. Ben Roethlisberger was the key to beating Indy three years ago, not Bettis and Parker.
Dick Lebeau come up with one of the greatest defensive schemes against Peyton Manning in that game. Dick Lebeau won that game. Ben had 14 whole completions in that game!?!? They ran the ball 42 times!
  14. What was said months ago that caused you to lose respect for him, GP1?
I'm only guessing, but see post #11 in this thread.Keep in mind when reading this, this is written from a story somebody told ITZ written years latter. If everything in the post was true, keep in mind CF was what 19 at the time??? This post didn't change my mind one way or another about Charlie, he can play on my football team.
