  1. I wouldn't worry about it. If you check out the Can't forums(I use that term loosely) they are pooh-poohing Carducci for writing the story in the first place. Sports forums are like that. People say stupid things...because they can. It's sort of like using the phrase "pooh-poohing". It shouldn't be done, but alas...
  2. Man, some of you guys are goofballs.Anyway, good win! Don't overlook Hiram(Hiram? Really?)!
  3. Right, but if you were to sit down and watch Akron play a football game, would you be able to decisively say which division we were in?
  4. Student fees? So effectively a tuition increase. Which was used to fund new programs and services during such questionable economic times? At best, that sounds irresponsible. If it's good enough for Can't State then it's good enough for us, right? I don't consider myself a conservative or a Republican, so partisan complaints mean little to me. What you're saying is, your precious government decided against funding education because a certain party was opposed to the concept of a public education. Wow, so how is that democracy working out for you? By the way, not much of Reagan's presidency could be described as "fiscal conservatism". He raised taxes and increased the deficit significantly. That said, his rhetoric sure was appealing... Believe it or not, your world view at the age of 18 isn't necessarily the same world view that you will hold as an adult-- or even as a 21 year old. Hey, I can play that game too!"No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him. "-TJBut hey, if the government commits an act of aggression for you then it's okay, right?
  5. Decreasing state funding requires an expansion of unnecessary services? I think it's simpler than that. When the president showed up to Rob's cafe a couple years back to talk to students, there were at least 20 men dressed in suit and tie scrambling around rearranging chairs while talking on their cell phones before he even got there. I wasn't the only one in the room that thought it looked a tad silly. It's apparent that there's some serious bureaucratic waste in Buchtel hall and beyond... As opposed to who? Who else should pay for someone's education? Ah, I see. The federal government should be held responsible for our debt.I'm curious...why do you think government is paying less now?
  6. You know what I find bizarre? The fact that donations to the university are increasing to record highs, yet tuition is still generally increasing overtime. Which would be fine, but at the same time the University continues to add new bus routes, buildings, degrees, etc.Why cry that you're broke, while you continue to spend, spend, spend? It's become obvious that something isn't right with the current structure of our higher education system; not just at Akron, but across the state and the nation.
  7. We're playing Ohio State at Ohio Stadium and we're within a touchdown in the second quarter...
  8. Woah! LOL. I should have known better than to mention Pittsburgh on zipsnation. Sometimes I forget how many zips fans are yinzers(JK!). First of all...I love Pittsburgh. It's downtown beats all of the other rust belt cities hands down. But in my opinion, Akron's neighborhoods have held up much better overall. Granted, Pittsburgh has more picturesque architecture...but that sort of comes with the territory when it's about twice the size and older than Akron. Of course Pittsburgh has more attractions/sports arenas than Akron. I'm not arguing that Akron is more attractive city or even a better city. I'm just saying that Akron seems to have less overall urban decay and abandonment. Don't get me wrong..it's here...just seems less common. I hope that clears things up. http://fiveprime.org/hivemind/Tags/abandoned,pittsburgh
  9. By the way, I've truly enjoyed my stay in the city of Akron during the past few years. I've been all over the rust belt, and Akron seems to lack a lot of the severe urban decay that cities like Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and (ugh) Detroit have suffered from. Overall, Akron seems to have held it's own during the decline of the industrial urban areas that took place over the past few decades. To be honest, I can't think of many cities Akron's size that offer as much.
  10. Yet true? A couple things didn't make that much sense to me. Like Stan Hywet being near a crack house. I know it's a joke, but that area of Akron is actually pretty nice. Oh, and I never realized that fog was an issue in the valley(then again, I've never lived there, so...). Besides that, it was a pretty funny video.
  11. Luis Proenza is a great president in terms of building new structures on campus and raising cash from big time donors. Obviously, this makes him very popular on a site like zipsnation, because athletics is one of the major benefactors of his ambitious plans. How would the university fare if the enrollment at universities began to shrink? What happens when higher education can no longer be looked at as a "right"? I know this sounds far-fetched, but it's a possibility for our future. I hope that I'm dead wrong, but I just don't see anything that suggests our administrators have any clue as to what the future could hold for higher education. I'm confused. What do you mean when you say that cost"hasn't increased, it's been moved to the student"?
  12. I'm only trying to introduce discussion on the subject. In the long term, there are going to be huge changes in higher education. I'm not so sure UA's administration is at all prepared for these changes. I wonder what the US currency will look like by that point?
  13. Yup. We should ignore the saints at the Federal Reserve. Damn central American banking cartels.
  14. I know exactly who Lebed is. He is a scam artist, and the NIA has been promoting his pump and dump schemes for a while now. That said, much of their rhetoric(this video included) is very realistic. Furthermore, your claim that gold and silver will "burst in the next 4-5 years" is..well...odd. I think you're confusing Lebed's money making schemes with the overall precious metals market. Lebed's "pump and dump" schemes will take much less than 4-5 years to "burst". Meanwhile, the precious metals market will probably keep rising(with some hiccups) as long as central banks keep devaluing currencies. But thanks for pointing out to people that the NIA is NOT a group that people should be considering. The message this video sends, however, is very real.
  15. This is more than partisan politics.
  16. Anyone else smell another preemptive war in our not-so-distant future? The war-mongers in Washington seem to have the sheeple unified since Osama was killed.
  17. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/05/to...rsities_ma.html Does anyone know how this will affect UA? I heard about a year ago that the state of Ohio plans on making the research oriented universities less and less dependent on state dollars. This appears to be what the article is referring to. According to the people I talked to, the liberal arts departments(arts, history, philosophy, etc) across the state are going to be seeing bigger cuts in state funding. Universities whose student body and faculty primarily focus on these disciplines will be hit the hardest. The article makes it sound like only Ohio State and a select few(unnamed) universities will be safe. Question is, who are the "select few"?
  18. Now that's what I call inclusive excellence in action.
  19. This is great! By the way, I e-mailed megabus and suggested this exact idea a few months ago. They said it was a "good idea" and I never heard back from them. It looks like they liked my idea! From Pittsburgh you can take the bus up through the entire northeast. I see some road trips in my not so distant future!
  20. So I thought this was an appropriate place to post this... I was listening to the Dan Patrick show, and some guy named "Rowdy in Ohio" calls in and basically tears Tressel to shreds. I think he sort of surprised Dan Patrick with his anti-OSWHO tone. At first I thought "Rowdy in Ohio" was a WWE enthusiast who needed to get out more; but once he started ripping on Tressel I knew he had to be one of our own. So are you out there RIO? Or are we dealing with a kilt wearing maniac that despises the silver and red?
  21. In my experience, locals and old people call it "Akron U". It doesn't really bother me. It sounds sort of stupid, but because most people from out of state just call it "Akron", who really cares?
  22. Akron Athletics youtube page uploads a post game video after every regular season home game. It usually include clips from the game as well as interviews with KD and some of the players. http://www.youtube.com/user/ZipsAthletics#p/u
  23. Only Youngstown is like Detroit. Don't forget Erie, PA.
  24. As far as scheduling goes-- somewhere between the cupcakes that we used to play and Miami's meat grinder would be ideal. It seems like Dambrot has realized that; he's made the necessary steps to upgrade the schedule in the past couple years. I'd like to see more average-to-below-average high majors and quality mid majors on our schedule. There's no reason to schedule more than one or two cupcakes or powerhouse programs every season.
