Couldnt be more correct B&G!! Television is justification to those cleveland lovers of OSU, CSU, etc. They want nothing to do with Akron U and dont want to see/hear about them either. Its an incredible handicap that we live with (no TV station) yet were not alone. Same goes for BG, Miami, OU, And Can't so complaining about it is futile. It was refreshing to see/ hear the interest we got last year when we made the NCAA tournement. U are correct, even the powers that be at 3,5,and 19 didnt ignore us then.

In a related topic. Did anyone else besides me expect a flushier uniform once Nike and LB23 took over?? I mean watching a fair amouint of Bball on tv Im hard pressed to find a more boring/plain uniform than we wear for home games. I realize it means squat for the team or us die hard fans but a flushy colorful uniform would catch the interest of some 10yr old novice fans. I always remember the StV/M jerseys from 10 yrs ago now were graphically light years ahead of ours now. Remember our gold jerseys from just 4 or 5 yrs ago??
-
I stand corrected. most schools and OU were back monday so I assumed UA was back. attendance may suffer but the team should be prepped.
-
No argument that we didnt play well against them last year, or against NCSU,however we did play decent against TexA/M( we just shot terrible and lost by 12 at the #19 team). No offense VMD but you say "we didnt play........" as if you are a loyal fan, yet you are predicting a 15 point loss??? Why so negative?? Also- concerning the crowd, the URI game is the 1st basketball game were pushing on local radio/CTV and the students are back. I see no reason why we wont have a min of 3500 for this one. IMHO the difference in UA play since november is confidence is there now- particularly with Conyers and B McKnight. Fans should follow the lead and have a little confidence as well. pessimism wont do any good.

Back to Jon Marochino, who's a key player in Freedom Avenue's(thats the Akron/Canton clear channel cluster of 6or 7 stations) third major move. He'll host "The Jon Marochino Show", a weekday, 3-6 PM local sports talk show on sports WARF/1350 Akron "Fox Sports 1350". Quoting another station release:Listeners will be able to express their thoughts on teams such as the Zips, Kant St., Aeros, Cavs, Browns, Indians, and Buckeyes. The program will also devote time to coverage of High School Sports. “For the first time, listeners in Akron won’t have to tune to a station in Cleveland for their daily dose of Northeast Ohio sports” said Marochino. “We are two guys who scream and yell at the TV when our teams aren’t playing well, we’re not clubhouse or locker room reporters, we’re fans who happen to have a radio show” Marochino added. The "two guys" refers to Marochino and sports update anchor Todd Fisher. I realize not too many on here care for the signal/coverage of 1350. No argument here. But still 1350 makes no mistake- their flagship content is Zips sports and I salute them for carrying soccer when no one else ever would have, as well as all the zips mens, womens games, and football and baseball. Bottom line is in Akron we dont get mush "local" coverage so lets try to support it when we do.

News story from Knoxville TN news sentinel....................................................................................Mitch Browning not gone yet!! But it might not be long until the Tennessee graduate assistant is headed elsewhere. The coaching veteran appears to be headed to Notre Dame to join new coach Brian Kelly, though a deal hasn't been finished yet. A source in the UT program indicated it might be done as early as this afternoon."I don't know what's going to happen with that," Vols coach Lane Kiffin said. "I'm sure Mitch is going to get a great job. He's done an unbelievable job, and he's been an offensive coordinator and a line coach at many places and put up a bunch of good numbers."Obviously he was a big help for us this year, leading the SEC in least sacks allowed and having a 1,300-yard rusher."And from Coachscoop.com today.......................................................................Akron:Our sources tell us that Head Coach Rob Ianello has hired Tennessee Graduate Assistant, Mitch Browning, as an assistant coach on his new staff.Sounds like a solid hire to me.

JD Brookhart is reportedly interviewing with Dennis Erickson at Arizona state to take over Offensive coordinator position. I wish JD well and hope he gets it if he wants, still, Im a bit surprised at the speed of his opportunity and the level, considering this years offensive history.

Soccer Coach of the Year, You Got to be Kidding Me
infofan replied to 72 Roo's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Both teams bunkered for the second half of the games because they knew they were toast if they didn't out number the Zips in the box. This with the Zips 2 best playmakers (Ampi & Nanchoff) not playing or not at full strength.2 ACC programs played the Zips and didn't score a regulation goal. And the Zips didn't come close to bunkering in either game.I'd take my chances with the Zips playing an ACC schedule. They clearly outplayed both UVA and UNC in regulation & overtime. Do they run the table? Who knows .. but they'd have a better chance of running the table in the ACC than anyone currently in the ACC or in the NCAA for that matter.Go Zips!! B) Dont forget the fact we played another ACC team- Virginia Tech during regular season. And we won theat one 2-0. So we did score against ACC but we were not scored upon by ACC. Hey- just a thought. Has Crew stadium ever bid for NCAA college cup championship?? -
I BELIEVE THAT WE HAVE.......[[i Believe that we are going to Cary next weekend to bring back an NCAA Championship!!![

Attendance 4,254!!! I salute the fans. Wish I had a ticket to make it 4,255. Caleb, I hope this support speaks volumes to how youre wanted here!

Hoobler to visit Indiana this weekendby Beacon Sports on December 1, 2009in Football, OrrvilleOrrville senior MLB Chase Hoobler plans to visit Indiana this weekend, according to Orrville coach Doug Davault.Hoobler, who is orally committed to Akron, is going to check out other schools since the Zips have made a coaching change.Hoobler had a close relationship with former Akron coach J.D. Brookhart and the Zips were the first to offer Hoobler.Indiana is one of at least 16 other schools that have offered Hoobler a scholarship.“He’s going to probably visit some other schools as well,” Davault said in an e-mail. “I don’t know that Akron is completely out of the picture, but he is going to explore other options.”Inevitable that these things will happen but it still frustrates us .

Fantastic 2nd half for Zips. First half not so bad either, the baskets just werent falling. Dont get too hard on Humpty- not sure how many others noticed but he threw up( in trash can by team bench and rowdies)at least once tonight. Definately under the weather but he toughed it out. Solid win but a big assist by Niagra coach . French agreed with him- ball was off C Mcknight but call went our way. Thats what home court is supposed to mean. Looking more and more like Mike Bardo is the unknown 3rd player who will be leaving after this year. Disappointing crowd once again. Where is our support.

For what its worth, if you guys are like me youre having little if any luck in finding anyone to use these extra tickets. Heres an idea- bring them along and have ticket taker scan them all. Its just padding attendance but it will look better on paper to have 12773 there than 2, 419. Heres hoping for better things in the future. someday??

NCAA second round vs. South Florida
infofan replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Me too, but only if it's strong enough to induce enough stupidity so that I actually believe the zips won't get the number 1 seed in the NCAA's.Hell- Im ok with a 1-0 win!!! But seriously- does anyone know what ticket status is? will tix be available a gate?? Is it near sellout? -
On that note, anyone else hear that K-ent starting QB Spencer Keith sustained a serious injury in the 3rd quarter? Apparently injured his throwing arm following a sack. That's unfortunate, hopefully it's not that bad. I look forward to 3 more years of Nicely vs Keith.Good effort in 2nd half. Sorry about being so critical earlier. Did anyone hear KD postgame? Howard should be a W. Attendance of 300 in 8000 seat arena?? How are flushes going to honor Dougie Martins guarantee of winning season and a bowl game now?????? GO SOCCER ZIPS> NCAA AKRON ALL THE WAY
-
Im sorry to be critical but how can a division 1 program not have equipment to properly broadcast games. Anyone who heard any of the NC State game and its "technical difficulties" knows what I mean. Well guess what- that was far better than todays game. A bad phone connection- barely audible. So bad 1350 pulled the plug at 1pm and replaced it with fox sports. Just disgracefull that this happens. Its bad enough how the teams play but now we cant even hear the game due to equipment problems. Not French'es fault. Bad radio coverage, inaudible content, poor play equals a bad recipe for building a major program.
-
Yes Rob did sign off saying goodbye to Cleaveland!!! Surprised he didnt call us Akron U. NCState is in the best league in country but theyre hardly a good team. We were favored on Vegas line by 1. What is wrong here guys?? Youre going to have off nights shooting but defense has almost always been a constant. We gave up something like 62% fg shooting. That after 51% for AP. Have the Dambrot boys been hanging out with JD's gang too much?? So much for learning a lesson last Sunday. Caleb- dont let your boys anywhere near the FB or BB teams till after Dec 10.

2-1 UA final score!! Congrats!!and Ampi played!
-
Attendance is probably our season ticket total (@ 7000) plus students and tickets sold this week hence the 10900 or so. I agree with Dave too that Equins didnt deserve to be dumped on. However having been to all our games including the virtual sellout with Morgan St I believe our att. figures are true and I say that with a straight face! YSU averages about 12000 per game- not bad but their tickets are quite a bit cheaper. And Stambaugh isnt such a bad facility.
-
Good points!! Add in zips merchandise if and when gift shop is finished and merchandise offerings are expanded and my guess is well quadruple the best revenue UA football has ever seen. My question is this........ Who canclarify status of JD's contract. I was under impression it ended this year. But Elton Alexander says he has one year left. Thats a lot to payoff if we indeed hire someone at @300K. Weve done it before ( Gerry Faust,Dan Hipscher)but can we afford to do it after nov 27th?? Can we afford to not do it??

I agree attendance for Can't game was better than some here anticipated- considering OSU on tv at same time. but did you notice- not too many Can't fans. I hate to bring up the dead horse issue but if we are serious about upping attendance 2 schools realistically come to mind: YSU and Marshall. Like it or not they both travel well. The 4 game average is still nearly 21k per game ===> 20,851 per game.Total attendance through 4 games ===> 83,404.Goal of 18k average over 6 games requires that 24,596 total fans take in the next two games. Piece of cake.I figure we'll see about 17k per game the last 2 games .. especially if the Zips can beat Temple on Friday. If that happens, the total season attendance will be ====> 117,404, for an average attendance of just shy of 20k .. 19567 per game. Not too bad for a less than stellar product on the field. If we assume a $20/ticket average .. that's $2,348,080 in gate receipts before a single dog, brat, soda or beer is purchasedJust have to clarify the issue of gate receipts. You have to factor in @ 3000 or so students did not pay and about 2000 of our season tix were family plan ( 200 bucks for 4 tickets for 6 games). I think its still a quantum leap fromRubber bowl revenues. One has to wonder- Can't is averaging 15588 a game at 5 dollars per ticket. While most MAC schools charge @ 24bucks a ticket . how deep a hole are they digging??
-
Yes other schools do it ( including OSU). The NCAA permits two so-called premium admission games. That doesnt make it right but most schools do take advantage of it. Still it has to seem like robbery to the Can't fans. 20BUCKS for a ticket when theyre used to getting 2 tix for 10$ at home.

Zeke is Trying to Adjust to College Basketball
infofan replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Sorry to disagree but I believe Gonzaga is indeed a great program. A school of 6000 that has been in NCAAs countless times, advanced countless times, on natl tv countless times, put several players in NBA. And as for their schedule, they may not play in ACC or SEC, or Big 10 but they played and beat top 20 teams Tennessee (twice)and OK ST last year, as well as beating Maryland, Indiana, Washington St, Mt ST Marys, Tx Southern, and others. If thats not a great program what realistically is?? -
I just disagree Zach. It appears that it is you who obsesses over someone being "wrong". It is your problem that you can't handle dissension and no one elses. Jake- lets start over. I appreciate you being an opinionated Zip fan. I do disagree with you on the projected location but its a free country. As such lets respect that we can agree to disagree. And make no mistake, if a new arena/convocation ctr is built on campus Ill be estatic. Lets just try to get along on here. Were all zip fans with the same end result in mind.

Im not sure if anyone else noticed but about a month ago GOZIPS.COM added a new link. Click on it and supposedly any questions you had would be directed to A.D. Tom Wistrcil. Sounds like a great idea to me but either its totally bogus or the execution is failing. I sent a couple questions in to "ask the AD" about 10 days ago and have yet to receive a response. Does anyone else have any experience with this link? Either good or bad?? Certainly Mr W has a lot on his plate right now but if the link was established without his consent someone dropped the ball. If TW was aware of it and is simply overwhelmed with work or other questions certainly a "your question has been received and a reply will be coming shortly" was in order and would have been accepted. But just being blown off doesnt relect well on either TW or the Gozips.com site.
