  1. +1!!!! I too have been a zip basketball fan for a looooonnnngggg time. I remember watching Len Paul and Harvey Glover and Randy Anderson ans Will schwartzinger (apologies for spelling)in memorial hall. As exciting as those games were they don't compare. We're not playing Philadelphia textile and Northern Kentucky, were playing and beating Can't state and Ohio U and Penn state and whoever else stands in our way. Who ever honestly thought we'd sell out any games other than Can't or have the longest winning streak in the nation. Thanks go out to Coach D and the staff for all that. Lets enjoy the ride and see where it goes from here.
  2. mcCarthy athletic center, built about 2005 for a small program called Gonzaga, holds just 6000. It serves their needs fine- they could use the 14000 seat Spokane arena if they wanted but they dont. It was built for 25million which they say translates into 35million in 2013 dollars. Not a palace but not a jar either!
  3. Two thoughts here. First, does that mean a renovation of the JAR is off the table entirely? And two, I know it was 10, 12 years ago they built it but wasnt the Eastern Michigan convocation center (A building KD loves) built for only about 33 million and it holds close to 9k. Also the Covelli Center in Youngstown was built for 42 million in 2005 and it holds close to 6k. Why so expensive in the design costs? Although if theres no funds available its a moot discussion.
  4. Just hope its not Jonas ( Mr Offense) !
  5. The Terry Bowden show is being taped at Image videos in Louisville- the same set and production facilities as the Keith Dambrot show. No its not going to be the high quality finished work that you see on STO but its what we can afford and its a start so lets not be too critical. Well probably see the same commercials at every break over and over and the same editing we saw on the KD show. Ill be glad to finally have a football coaches show still and hope TB can interject some of his broadcast expertise into the show.
  6. Has anyone heard any mention of the coaches show ( zips live?) or a possible TV coaches show with TB? Here it is less than 2 weeks till the opener and theres been no word/ press release on either. Yes the past Zips live didnt give much reason to listen or attend but I was hoping that UA was revamping that this year. I also find it strange that ( Mr Akron) Joe Dunn's radio show has featured Can't's football coach but Coach Bowden is refusing to go on the air with Joe. It wont affect wins and losses but as for fan base development can we afford to not use every available media to get the word out? On July 4th in the Stow 4th of july parade every one of Kents varsity coaches was featured riding or walking the route but Akron wasnt even present ( not even Zippy).
  7. The A-10 is an outstanding league. And KDs father probably has great memories there. That plus a potential 800K . Why not make a second run is what Greg Amodio is probably thinking. But loyalty is in UAs favor. As is the fact that the Plumbo center is 1100 seats SMALLER than the JAR. Smart money says Duquesne hires Antigua on the heals of a NCAA championship
  8. Nice come back Big Zip. I hope your negativity and sarcasm toward a great regular poster ( Dave) make you feel better. I prefer to feel better by hoping for a Zip victory against the likes of Drexel, Washington, Northwest, or maybe even a rematch with Miss St or Miami. Guys- all Im saying is the NIT isnt the CBI- Its full of good teams including UA
  9. Yes the refs were better than friday night and in terms of # of fouls were even, but the hacking endured by zeke and Nikola was not whistled. Still the single incident that I question was the charging foul on AA in the last minute or so. From my vantage the defender was not set, but the refs shouldswllow the whistle if unsure in the lat minute. The shot would have been good by Nikola.
  10. It didnt take long for the Dambrot bashing to begin........... Did they lose the game ? yes, with the aid of the always questionable MAC referees. I my opinion Ohio was the better team last night, and like it or not Cooper is very talented. Nik couldnt have guarded that last 3 any better but it still went in. I would have called it failure if we got bombed by 25 as we did in Athens last week. As I see it we didnt fail last night as much as we got outplayed. As a fan of this team for over 40 years I dont consider making it to our 6th straight MAC title game and losing at the buzzer and moving on to a NIT bid the definition of a failure. Everyone is entitled to their opinion , but I dont think quickzip, big zip, truth, etc are going to feel any better spewing the constant negativity. Like it or not NIT means more playing time and exposure. But if thats failure be sure to find something else to do tuesday night. And give KD a break, I doubt that he slept all night regardless of how he sounded on postgame.
  11. My apologies if this is already posted but the UA vs Miami game on saturday night is being televised by ONN on cable. Not sure what channel it is on direct tv or dish but I know ONN is carried by U-verse and Time warner. Its always nice to be able to catch a zips game on the road on TV.
  12. Football scoop confirms that RI will coach receivers and be the recruiting coordinator for Kansas. Good luck Charlie!
  13. Another loss yes, but for a change the effort was there. Fine ffort b Zeke! Tree was outstanding ( gotta work on free throws ) obviously motivated by being back home. Same could have been said for Harney if he'd behaved himself! ( what did he do anyway? Will anyone talk about it?) Nice arena although they have no video board or replays. Also kind of rediculous looking to have 1/3 of the seats draped off. Only 4700 including Akron fans to see a 10-1 team has to frustrate Waters! Look for him to leave for a better offer again. On pregame KD said Alex has to have surgery. Will play now and have surgery after NCA&T game. That way he misses just 2 games vs 4 games if he had surgery now. That seems optomistic.
  14. Does anyone have any updates/info on Alex? The suspension is for reasons that cant be discussed, I get that. But cant it be announced how long he is suspended? 2 games, 2 weeks, till 2nd semester, whatever?? B-ball fans have anxiously awaited this season only to see the non-conference part of it deteriorate rapidly. Light at the end of the tunnel ( AA returning) would spark a little optomism.
  15. I agree that hockey is a long shot to make it in Akron. However to make any arena project feasible you have to fill dates! And much more than the 16 dates that mens basketball would fill. Lets be rreasonable. As much as any of us would love a new arena, is it worth 60-80 million to build a facility that will be used 16 times a year? ( can you say Infocision stadium?) Now if you can book 10- 15 concerts ( yes some shows are too small for Q or CSU but too big for EJ or Palace/State theaters. ) That includes shows like TSO that have sold out in Youngstaown in past. 8-12 dates for ice shows ( disney). 3 or 4 WWE wrestling shows. ateempt a handfull of miscelaneous events,Home and garden show, car show, boat show, tennis exhibition hockey, comedians, etc. Host some HS games/tournements. And possibly throw in an NBA D league team that failed in Canton plus a couple globetrotter games. You have then maybe 120 dates of usage- that might be doable. Has anyone here been to or seen the Huntington center in Toledo? Nice size for our needs and its in use all the time! They had to turn down an NBA d league franchise due to lack of available dates.
  16. No problem here getting 1350, although I get it over the internet . Cant get video though. None made available apparently.

  18. Acme is a sponsor of Can't state. Giant eagle claims to be a proud Akron supporter. That's why I would expect some merchandise to be carried at G E . And breaking off our long time marketing affiliation with acme was a major mistake. So was aligning UA with the Cleveland airport instead of Akron canton ( which is now a major sponsor of Can't). Yes marketing is business but supporting local companies seems preferrable to out of town companies when possible.
  19. Has anyone else noticed giant Eagle has begun prominently advertising on the front page of their weekly circular they are "Proud sponsors of the Akron Zips". I appreciate the ads and the financial support Giant Eagle gives UA! However, it's frustrating that those same giant eagle stores stock HUGE amounts of Osu, browns, Indians, and steelers stuff but can't stock a single zip hat , t-shirt, or anything UA. I don't deny them selling those other tea's products but a "proud sponsor" could have a token display or more couldn't they?
  20. DISGRACEFULL!!! How can TW and Dr Proenza let this go on? Again one has to wonder what if we had spent the 80+million we spent on the Info and the Stile fieldhouse and built an arena instead...........
  21. someone told me it's going to be tape delayed(audio delayed or whatever it is)? So it'll probably be on after the Aeros game i assume... Well i listened to the end of aeros game. Zipslive was not on. More disappointing is that neither Tom W or Gregg Bach took time to answer my email inquiring about show. No great loss but it's the principle of the situation that is very frustrating
  22. I've read that zipslive is returning tonight. However the aeros are on 1350- not zipslive as posted. My question is will show be on radio or not? I've asked both AD Tom and Gregg Bach and neither one responded. Neither has news collector. Does anyone on here know or care?
  23. CBS Owned and Operated WKRK FM- 92.3 the FAN has announced former Fox Sports Radio morning team Kevin Kiley and Chuck Booms will reunite to host the new "Fan" morning show, with producer/sidekicks Josh Potter & Tony Mazur and sports anchor Jeff Thomas.[21] New York sister station WFAN personality Adam "The Bull" Gerstenhaber is being brought over to be the afternoon drive host, and it's expected that former Ohio State Buckeyes saftey and 2002 National Champion Dustin Fox will be his co-host. The Akron Beacon Journal reported that Andy Baskin, who currently serves as sports director for Cleveland ABC affiliate WEWS-TV, will be the new format's midday host, featuring Cleveland Cavaliers TV pregame host/sideline reporter Jeff Phelps as co-host and sports anchor Jeff Thomas.[22] Ohio Media Watch reported that UA grad Ken Carman, currently the lead play-by-play man for Ashland University football/basketball, and former afternoon host on Akron sports station WARF AM 1350, is expected to take the Prime time/evening slot. Overnight programming will be syndicated via Fox Sports Radio featuring programs hosted by Tony Bruno and J.T. The Brick. WKRK will also be the home for The NFL on Westwood One and NCAA football (also from Westwood One).[24][25] UA buys the time from 1350 for broadcasts, then sells advertising through IMG . UA also hires and Pays the broadcast team. The air time isnt free but its the cheapest air time available in Akron.
  24. Im not on the payroll of 1350, but lets give them a little credit. All the mens Bball and Football, all non conflicting womens games, about 15 baseball games, and now 10 soccer games being broadcast. Thats a pretty decent committment, and the FCC controls their signal and power- nothing they can do about it.
  25. He's very talented. However, it was painfully obvious that he could have hardly cared less about Akron. Insulting show, really. With all due respect, Ken carman has been to more Zip games than many of the frequent posters on here. He talked to and about all 6 major Zip sports and had the coaches on his show many times- how is that insulting? And he would ask some questions whether it be Dambrot, Kest, or Porter that Bill Morgan wouldnt have the nerve to ask. I fully agree that the best choice for a coaches show is Steve French or even Joe Dunn, but I guess were stuck with Bill Morgan, who does his best but just doesnt engage listeners at all, thus our coaches show doesnt interest or attract virtually anyone, and thats a shame. Does anyone remember Bill Needle who used to do the games and coaches show at Can't? The new guy ( Linder) is light years better and the coaches show is interesting ( as interesting as Can't can be). My point about KC was if you want to make it in the sports broadcasting biz you have to appeal to the masses and reality says thats OSU and not UA. I wish it was different.... As far as 1350 goes, we aint going anywhere else... WAKR does OSU and the CAVS, WNIR does Can't, the rest of the local stations are either non commercial or music oriented and arent going to change . the only option is If you have a smart phone download iheart radio and get 1350 that way
