  1. Thanks John. Glad to here it. I saw the box scores in MAC tourney and he did not play against Can't or BUffalo. Perhaps he hit the wall. I still remember coach Rem recruiting Matt Gebacz out of Hoban only to quit after a month. I was afraid the same had happened with Iero.
  2. Great year for zips baseball, with all the distractions (weather, coaching suspension, etc). Was wondering what happened to our top recruit- Dom Iero from Hoover. Great PG and QB and he chose to play baseball for UA but haven't heard mention of him since really early in the year.
  3. Coach rembelak will be back in the dugout on Monday. And congrats to team on making MAC tournament!
  4. Congrats HT! First banquet I've missed in a few years. Just curious.....any mention of recruits, facilities, etc. in KDs speech?
  5. Does his commit mean Robothom is out of the picture?
  6. I think you meant to say Cristen Wilson. How did the two of them look size wise?
  7. I saw on twitter this morning Jake was getting his finger checked/ x-rayed. Anyone have info on his status- was it his shooting hand? Hard to believe stat- We win this game partly because we shot 75% from the free throw line vs 67% for EMU. When was last time we outshot anyone from the line in a close game.
  8. It needs to be clarified, tonight's game vs Eastern Michigan is NOT an ESPN broadcast. It's a TWSC (time Warner sports channel) production. As a service to non TWC subscribers they make to broadcast available to espn. I understand some people don't get TWC for whatever reason. As for me I do and I never lose cable or Internet so I have never considered switching providers. But if I had this might be an incentive to switch back to TWC. We have more road games televised now than ever and I appreciate that. As for the athletic department not promoting that the games are on TV, I think they want us to get out and go to the game instead of staying home and watching on TV. I think Michael reghi does a good job, I dust don't like looking at his hairline on camera.
  9. I was listening also and Steve's comment was basically directed toward all those supposed zip fans who have jumped off the bandwagon and/or are slamming the team. They've lost a ton of players to the draft and they've got a 1st year coach and yet they're 9-3, ranked, and just beat top 10 wake forest- yet look at the crowd! Porter is gone but the zips still are playing soccer- pretty well other than the loss to hartwick. This is like all the criticism dambrot gets even though he keeps winning 20plus games and making it to Mac championship game. I agree with French-zips nation has evolved into mostly negativity and pessimism (my apologies to the better posters). That's everyone's right but some of us don't want to hear it.
  10. While i wont argue this is dilusions of grandeur, their idea isnt just a minor league football team. It is to create a new venue to rent out for entertainment and sports. If domed it would be the largest indoor arena in Ohio. therefore basketball would be a possibility as well as football and concerts and graduations and trade shows. Maybe even soccer and hockey. The idea has some merit. To build an 8000 seat arena would cost us 60million plus. However, With Akron Fulton still operating the same issue remains that they cant build higher than a certain point ( the light poles on field instead of on top)so Im skeptical that the FAA would ever sign off on such a plan. And as for 35Million? Can you say cost overruns? This will quite likely go the way of the Massilon sports arena back in the 80s
  11. Interesting tweet by Zachary Jackson from Fox ohio today. He said he was short on time so couldn't elaborate but " that's not the last BB arena built in akron that's going to have his initials and swooshes all over it". That's @FSOhioZJackson on twitter. Well see if he has more on this in days to come.
  12. Whai i remember hearing last night was the Zips are working to get into either the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii or the Anaheim Classic in California. But Coach D also said this would be over the thanksgiving week. In checking the respective websites the both have openings for one more team but the diamond head classic is scheduled for Dec. 22, 23, and 24th which makes the Anaheim classic more likely. Slight correction.... It is now called the DIRECTV Classic.
  13. The Walnut Hills boys’ basketball team thoroughly enjoyed the program’s first regional title Friday night at CintasCenter, but thoughts turned to state week by Saturday morning. Walnut Hills coach Ricardo Hill said he had 80 messages on his phone from well-wishers after the Eagles’ 50-46 win over La Salle Friday night and an emotional celebration was evident for the school’s fans and supporters among the 5,376 in attendance at XavierUniversity. “Awesome feeling,” Hill said Saturday morning. “It’s more of a relief; there was so much pressure on these guys to take everybody’s challenge.” Hill and some assistant coaches were scheduled to drive up to the University of Toledo in time for Saturday afternoon’s Region 1 final between Brecksville-BroadviewHeights vs. Toledo Rogers at 3 p.m. This season marks the seventh consecutive year an area Division I program will be at the state Final Four. Walnut Hills (27-1), ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer Division I area coaches’ poll and No. 18 nationally by MaxPreps, plays the Region 1 winner in a Division I state semifinal March 22 at 8:30 p.m. at Ohio State University. The Eagles practice at 8 a.m. Sunday before afternoon practices from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Hill said. The team leaves for Columbus after practice Thursday night and will stay in a hotel there before the Friday night game. Hill said he was proud of how the Eagles kept their resolve against La Salle (20-8) Friday night. Walnut Hills senior center Isaiah Johnson (Akron signee) had a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles. He was 4 of 7 from the free-throw line including a few critical shots at the line down the stretch. “Isaiah hit some big free throws,” Hill said. “I said, ‘when we need them he is going to make them.’” Walnut Hills senior forward DJ Wingfield (OhioUniversity signee) had 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Khari Burton had 10 points and five assists. La Salle, which had an 11-game winning streak snapped, had three players scoring in double figures Friday night including guards Jeffrey Larkin (10 points), Jeremy Larkin (10 points) and Connor Speed (10 points). Look for Isaiah and the Eagles on STO later this week in state finals
  14. I have to agree. Very good coverage for the most part from GT. I think the Zips deserved a beat writer to travel with the team as Elton Alexander does but thats a budgetary call and the BJ would rather cover Can't state (per Ron Ledgard). Lets hope GT stays on the Akron beat for a while.
  15. While I think the video quality of the scoreboard at the Q is much much better. Than the DAKtronic board we have at the JAR I doubt that it would fit. It would hang about 8 feet off the floor. We payed for the old board with money from Pepsi when we signed a contract. What did we get when we signed a new contract with Coke?
  16. I was at that akron Cleveland state game at the then HPE bldg and to be honest I don't know if there were over 8000 there. Certainly not 10k. Its hard to believe replacing the west side bleachers with chairbacks reduced the seating cap 1500.Seating capacity was listed at 7,096 ( which was a stretch) and I think a number of students and fans came in, couldn't find seats and left. Interesting to note CSU was selling out its 3600 seat gym nightly back then and clambering for a new facility, only to see their crowds dwindle to 2500 or so now. In a related note, are we going to set an all time single season attendance record at the Can't game? Although we averaged about 4000 in Huggins years we played fewer games. I don't recall ever having multiple crowds over 5000 like this year.
  17. Actually I believe were 3rd in attendance, behind Ohio U and Toledo. But Ohio averages about 6200 or so and Ill bet over half of that is students who get in free. The point being, our paid attendance is better than the Bobkitties. But they dont have to compete with the Cavs and the Monsters and High school sports. Toledo has a team thats not even eligible for the tounement yet they support them very well. Anyone know how they market their program?
  18. +1!!!! I too have been a zip basketball fan for a looooonnnngggg time. I remember watching Len Paul and Harvey Glover and Randy Anderson ans Will schwartzinger (apologies for spelling)in memorial hall. As exciting as those games were they don't compare. We're not playing Philadelphia textile and Northern Kentucky, were playing and beating Can't state and Ohio U and Penn state and whoever else stands in our way. Who ever honestly thought we'd sell out any games other than Can't or have the longest winning streak in the nation. Thanks go out to Coach D and the staff for all that. Lets enjoy the ride and see where it goes from here.
  19. mcCarthy athletic center, built about 2005 for a small program called Gonzaga, holds just 6000. It serves their needs fine- they could use the 14000 seat Spokane arena if they wanted but they dont. It was built for 25million which they say translates into 35million in 2013 dollars. Not a palace but not a jar either!
  20. Two thoughts here. First, does that mean a renovation of the JAR is off the table entirely? And two, I know it was 10, 12 years ago they built it but wasnt the Eastern Michigan convocation center (A building KD loves) built for only about 33 million and it holds close to 9k. Also the Covelli Center in Youngstown was built for 42 million in 2005 and it holds close to 6k. Why so expensive in the design costs? Although if theres no funds available its a moot discussion.
  21. Just hope its not Jonas ( Mr Offense) !
  22. The Terry Bowden show is being taped at Image videos in Louisville- the same set and production facilities as the Keith Dambrot show. No its not going to be the high quality finished work that you see on STO but its what we can afford and its a start so lets not be too critical. Well probably see the same commercials at every break over and over and the same editing we saw on the KD show. Ill be glad to finally have a football coaches show still and hope TB can interject some of his broadcast expertise into the show.
  23. Has anyone heard any mention of the coaches show ( zips live?) or a possible TV coaches show with TB? Here it is less than 2 weeks till the opener and theres been no word/ press release on either. Yes the past Zips live didnt give much reason to listen or attend but I was hoping that UA was revamping that this year. I also find it strange that ( Mr Akron) Joe Dunn's radio show has featured Can't's football coach but Coach Bowden is refusing to go on the air with Joe. It wont affect wins and losses but as for fan base development can we afford to not use every available media to get the word out? On July 4th in the Stow 4th of july parade every one of Kents varsity coaches was featured riding or walking the route but Akron wasnt even present ( not even Zippy).
  24. The A-10 is an outstanding league. And KDs father probably has great memories there. That plus a potential 800K . Why not make a second run is what Greg Amodio is probably thinking. But loyalty is in UAs favor. As is the fact that the Plumbo center is 1100 seats SMALLER than the JAR. Smart money says Duquesne hires Antigua on the heals of a NCAA championship
  25. Nice come back Big Zip. I hope your negativity and sarcasm toward a great regular poster ( Dave) make you feel better. I prefer to feel better by hoping for a Zip victory against the likes of Drexel, Washington, Northwest, or maybe even a rematch with Miss St or Miami. Guys- all Im saying is the NIT isnt the CBI- Its full of good teams including UA
