I would be okay with the median MAC salary with incentives that can make it one of the higher ones in the MAC, like Dambrot's contract was if I recalled correctly.
-
There goes one of my top choices for the Zips.
-
I think you're overestimating my "praise" for Coach Pfau. The women's soccer program has been so bad, that I was just stating he was decent compared to the rest. I disagree on some of the talent on the roster, but we're on the same page with Pfau's coaching stint at Akron. I do believe Noreen will get the program on track.

Looks like Miami has made their hire. Sounds like Jack Owens, Purdue associate head coach, is going to be their next head coach according to their message board.
-
Looks like Miami has been reading our posts on here. Jokes aside, that tells me that we may be competing for some of the same candidates. Hope we're already making phone calls....

The cost of maintenance alone compared to the revenue of attendance and vendors isn't enough. It wouldn't surprise me if that's in the red for almost all schools. Using money for half-filled stadiums(if that), is taking money away from basketball budgets in my opinion. That's what I meant by that.
-
Nope, 15K
-
And that's why the MAC is what it is in basketball.

Women's soccer was decent under Pfau. But when he left for Houston, the program has never recovered...

Anyone interested in knowing more about McDevitt, this interview was done 27 days ago. 15:15 into the podcast starts the interview(starting at 26:55 is where his philosophy talk shows. Before that is just specifics about his UNC-A team) http://www.hipcast.com/podcast/H1tJ6XnG

I know I'm hammering this name lately, but it's more about the situation than the name. Nick McDevitt - UNC Asheville head coach Current annual salary: $114,000 “Well, we talk to (recruits) about (our philosophy) during the recruiting process, to be honest with you,” McDevitt sad. “We show them film of how we play, how we see them fitting in (with) what we do and the style of play we’re going to play on both ends of the floor. That’s something they kind of know before they get on campus. That’s how we’re going to win games – or the way we’re going to try to win games.” I highly recommend listening to the clip between 6:00 - 7:58 of the 10 minute interview http://da.radio.cbssports.com/2016/03/09/unc-ashevillle-coach-we-sell-defense-when-recruiting/ Another bit from that: "I think when you do things one way (defensively) all the time, in my opinion you better have the best five players on the court each and every game you play. And certainly our goal is to get to the NCAA tournament, so if we're going to go up against the Kentucky's, Duke's, and Syracuse's of college basketball, and we go toe-to-toe with them, and they're going to play man-man half court defense the whole game while we play man-man half court defense the whole game, then we're in trouble. So we have to find ways to try and keep teams guessing a little bit, a little off balance, show them some things they may not see every night. Because of that, we try mix it up from playing half court to full court, from man-man defense to zone defenses, and hopefully we can keep teams out of rhythm a little bit and see where things happen over the last 4-5 minutes of the game(s)." ======================================================================================================= If we can find anyone that is getting paid that much while having SUCCESSFUL DI head coaching experience, the salary increase and our current talent on the team could be enticing for someone from a smaller conference, like a Nick McDevitt at UNC-Asheville in Big South Conference. That's the type of guy we should be looking for. I think this program could fall off if we get someone learning to be a head coach on the job. If Ohio can get a DI head coach, we should be able to do so as well.

Here's a Nick McDevitt phone interview before their opener a few years ago.

After researching a bit last night, Nick McDevitt is someone I would like to see get the opportunity.

Dambrot says 'yes' to Duquesne this time
mes102 replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Yep, and even Diggs wasn't JUCO. He was at New Orleans that got rid of their basketball program and because of that, he was able to go anywhere to play right away. So not many JUCOs at all. -
Good. Didn't get the chance to read the press release yet. I hope by mid-April, we have a head coach. If not, transferring out and recruiting for upcoming season will start taking it's toll...I know a lot of talk about transferring in the other topic, but a lot of that is reactionary. Once the dust settles, I think many of them will be back. Unless this search goes on too long....
-
Yeah, I'll take partial blame for that with my 2nd Crean post. Steele would be a nice fresh start for this program. Boals would be the next obvious choice. As dull as it seems, don't be surprised if they just promote McFadden or Thomas...
-
Former Marquette Athletic Director is now the Akron athletic director Tom Crean is a former Marquette head coach(even though Williams wasn't there when Crean was, but still a connection that can be correlated to Akron) Tom Crean coached Dwayne Wade at Marquette We all know Dwayne Wade's relationship with LeBron and how LeBron feels about the city of Akron(which includes the university) And Tom Crean just got a huge buyout from the Indiana job, so he can afford a paycut... So it's not like a 0% chance of happening. More like a 0.1% chance....
-
Lucas Murray? Also at Xavier. He's been mentioned for a lot of jobs himself. Plus, you'd see Bill Murray at every game now too.
-
This is more of a joke than an actual idea for the coaching search, but.... With having a former Marquette athletic director, maybe we have a chance at a certain former Marquette head coach? Maybe use that LeBron-Dwayne Wade connection to get Dwayne Wade to convince that coach to come to Akron since he is now unemployed(but getting paid big with his buyout)? Jokes aside, Boals would be my first choice. After that, it's a long list that I'll put together in a little bit. EDIT: Looks like clarkwgriswold and I had the same thought lol

Slocum(YSU) & Waters(CSU) retired. There's a topic on this already with a lot of information on it. I don't want to repeat it on this topic. As for this topic, be careful what you wish for. Dambrot should NOT be fired. Did he get outcoached last night? Probably. Did we probably focus in too much on Big Dog? Most likely. Did we peak too early? It seems that way. But that's the game of basketball. But does that mean we shouldn't make any changes? ABSOLUTELY NOT. We need changes. The players may need to hear a different personality/voice at practice. I hope McFadden gets the job at YSU and takes some staff with him. Then hopefully Dambrot brings in some "outsider" pieces to the program. Also, I agree we need to change up the schedule. However, if you remember correctly, GoZips mentioned in the past that we're having a hard time getting "non-cupcakes" to come to the JAR. Personally, I much rather us have 2-3 non-conference home games, and be on the road for 8-9 non-conference road games if that means we play a better non-conference schedule and get us ready for the MAC. It may be ugly for a couple years in regards to W-L record, but it should get us out of this quicksand we're in right now.

Jerry Slocum retires from YSU & Gary Waters retires from CSU

+1 I'm sure Dambrot and McFadden will have some interesting recruiting battles. I think he'll be great for YSU. People can say what they want about Dambrot the coach, but his coaching tree has done well for themselves so far. I think Rick will be no different. EDIT: Didn't want to keep adding posts, but figured this story fit this conversation. It's a Youngstown sports article from 2013. Looks like for us younger Zip fans that may not have known, McFadden was at OSWho when Tressel was there. I attached the link to the article if anyone is interested in reading it. Looking like McFadden to YSU is going to happen more and more every day now. Struthers' McFadden doesn't regret switch to hoops
