As soon as you walk into the Giant Eagle on Howe Ave. there is a display of Zips stuff. Nothing huge, but it's there.
-
I think Montero might be over 24? Must be, because Agudelo hasn't been on the list yet
-
Also, Teal came in at #5. Three Zips in the top 10!
-
Yeah I think Holmes will start on the wing opposite of Quinn. We have a seen a few different guys start at that spot including Portillos, Schmitt, and most recently Stevenson. I think this has all been Porter trying to find someone to fill that position until Luke comes back. I Look forward to seeing how he impacts our game.

Akron needs to make a change. Take out Schmidt and Portillos, and put in Zakuani and Nagbe.Ha that's funny, me and my buddy were joking that without Darren, we don't have a big center forward and that we need to put in Teal. I said "he's a big guy, holds the ball up well, and has a handful of MLS goals this season, he's just what we need"

Perry was #17, Darlington #10. Top five haven't been announced yet but it will almost certainly be in some order Teal, Steve, Brek Shea, Juan Agudelo, and Andy Najar. Oh and Darlington had another great goal tonight!

Yeah, so about that. If he just got back, that means he missed the first three weeks of the semester. If he missed the first three weeks of the semester, did he really just miss class that long, or is he not enrolled in classes this semester? We know Nik only had one semester of school left, which is why he was just going to take classes through last summer and then graduate. Since he didn't do that, it would make sense if he was just taking classes in the Spring. If that is the case though, is he allowed to play in the matches this semester? Technically he wouldn't be a student, right? I'm not sure how all that works. I was just wondering if this is going to be a thing of we have him back for next semester but he can't play for the out of conference games. Someone please enlighten me.

Ok so the reason Will Bruin is listed twice is because I was mistaken about the format of this list. MLS conducted fan voting, but is determining the list from an expert panel. The 25-40 who were announced are those who missed the cut based on the panel's decision, and the 1-24 were based on fan voting. the experts'1-24 will be released in sections over the next few days and weeks. I still expect to see the four that made it on the fan voted list to be in the experts' list, but maybe not in the same order. Glad to see MLS fans rate our former players so highly.

MLS soccer just released a list of its top 24 players under age 24. Here is the link. You'll notice a few familiar names in there. They also released numbers 25-40, which kind defeats the purpose of making it 24 under 24, but oh well. Check both lists for six former Akron players, and Will Bruin twice. Top honors went to Brek Shea, who is having an outstanding season. Spoiler alert: two of our guys made the top 5, right behind a few US national team regulars. Pretty impressive, but I guess anymore it's expected from the University of Akron soccer factory

Article on Yoram Mwila

Martin Ontiveros has started every game for Furman and logged 10 shots; glad to see these former Zips doing well. Personally, I don't consider Tony Walls a Zip because he never played for us and bad mouthed the team on the way out. -

You know it's funny, because a few weeks ago I read an article about Zakuani on the MLS website and it also stated that he won the Hermann his year. I commented on it stating that he was actually the runner-up and I noticed it was fixed later. Although it is a problem that these writers can't get something that simple correct, I don't mind that they want Steve to have been the recipient of the award, you know, since he deserved it. -
Suggestion for the Ak-Rowdies
yazan07 replied to zips4ever2008's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
That is actually where the idea came from. We have a Serbian flag that we wave for Nik during basketball games. -
I wondered about Mayer as well. He was kicking ball around with other subs at half time of CSUN game and appeared to be OK. Porter is still probably experimenting with the starting XI. I thought for sure that Mayer had the starting LB spot, but maybe it's still up in the air between him and Stevenson? As for Portillos, I'm pretty sure it's just a thing of figuring out that spot. That's the one position that I figured would be up in the air more so than the other ones. I'm glad to see Tommy start because he really does seem to be a hard worker who puts 110% on the field. I am predicting though that when Luke Holmes returns he will probably be fighting for that spot as well.

Tasteless? You mean like how they were proud to have nuts on their chests? It just writes it's own joke....doesn't it? I can't believe someone would come up with such an idea that would easily promote ridicule. And even without that.....they still look like Christmas elves. Ahem...what do OSU cheerleaders on Friday night and OSU cheerleaders on Saturday afternoon have in common?

I don't know about you guys, but at least I don't keep papers in the front of my pants on national television, or ever.

Luke Holmes and Walls update on Ohio.com
yazan07 replied to GoZipsGoZips's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
That's just bizarre. We have a theory that he realized he wasn't going to get much playing time and so he backed out under the guise of wanting to "finish what he started" and our guys being a bunch of "pretty boys" -
I really only started this topic because I needed a place to post this article, but didn't see a place where it really fit. I figured since they start their tournament tonight, it would be as good a time as any to start a thread for the weekend matches.
-
Yeah I agree. It's too bad because the gold numbers do look really cool, they are just tough to read. If the away kits are the same but blue, I bet those are really fly and readable
-
Glad this thread was started so I didn't have to do it. He impressed me most out of all the new guys. I swear the kid has wheels. No disrespect to Kofi, but I think DeAndre will surpass him as a right back for the Zips. The other two new defenders were impressive as well. Mayer looked good from what I saw, and Gallego really does not look like a freshmen. The kid has really good touch. These new guys are the real deal.

Two articles about two of our biggest former Zips in the MLS. An MLS survey put Steve at #9 on a list of 10 favorite MLS players. Also, Teal got a call-up to the national team from new coach Jurgen Klinsmann Sporting's Bunbury eager for chance to impress Klinsmann Soccer Almanac: why Seattle's Zakuani is beloved
-
Right On! I want one too. BTW, what does the star signify? A national title!

Ok here is my adjusted line-up. Porter has alluded to an adjusted formation to best utilize our personnel. Also I have heard more than once that Holmes will be out for the first portion of the season so I have factored that in too. Mattocks Quinn - Caldwell - Schmitt* Balogun - Trapp Mayer - Barson - Gallego - Yedlin Meves *I think this is the spot that is most up for grabs. I would guarantee almost everyone else as starters, but I put Tommy here just because, and I think it could change. Maybe Barrett gets a chance to play here too. Also Holmes playing changes things and he probably starts. Whichever of the players I just mentioned that don't start are probably the first ones off the bench. I also expect Brenes and Stevenson to get good minutes, especially with their ability to play multiple roles. Again, I don't know what formation we will be using. I also have heard that we could possibly be using a 4-3-3. Either way, I expect most of the aforementioned players to start. Can't wait, only a few more days!

Part 1: Defenders and Goalkeepers Part 2: Midfielders Part 3 will be posted tomorrow What do you guys think so far?

There's a link on the media day thread to U Tube video of the event. Im honestly just shocked at the lack of coverage. We're on preseason update THREE for womens volleyball... They have FIFTEEN videos from the men's soccer media day up on Youtube. That's not enough for you? I had not seen that yet. I stand corrected. I mean, it's not like anyone would know about that unless they were looking for it on Youtube. Why wasn't it posted to Gozips? Or why wasn't it shared on facebook or twitter via one of the athletic department accounts? These are things people want to see but they make little effort to bring them to anyone's attention.
