Diego Navarrete no longer on the team.
yazan07 replied to ZipGoTheZippers!'s topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Yes...ever since the Spring schedule ended. I see that Matt Dagilis and Kayvon Afsarifard are listed on the Akron Summit Assault roster. Does anyone know where some of out other players may be competing this Summer? Between these development teams and our Professional players in MLS, I'll make it through the rest of Spring and the Summer. I do not want to wish the warmer months away. Also Aodhan Quinn, an incoming transfer, is on the roster. I don't blame you for forgetting about him with all the changes that are being made to this roster. Plus he isn't officially on our roster yet. -
Hey so did you guys hear Nik Cvetinovic is coming back next year?

Maybe nicer team lounge -> better recruits -> better team -> more hype -> higher attendance -> renovations to accommodate numbers/new arena

You have a keen eye. Tulloch had enough swag to make up for a lack of talent though. -

Wow I'm surprised. It's one thing for some of the second year players to disappear, as it seems that has been happening, but it really surprises me that we brought in a player this semester and he is already not on the team. I mean, he was on the team and then off the team before even using any of his eligibility. Crazy. All I knew about this kid is that I heard apparently he doesn't speak a lick of English. He apparently relied on the players who spoke both English and Spanish a lot. It's weird that so many players have left, but I guess when you're the best team in the country, anyone who is deemed dead weight can be easily replaced. -

Do we know much about David's skills & best position? He is a left back who was recently cut from Wigan FC's youth program -
Signing Class analysis

This is the position that I (not an expert) felt was going to be perhaps the biggest question mark going into next fall. Problem solved? I sure hope so. -
A couple of things here. First, soccer is a bunch of guys running around a field in shorts trying to bounce a ball off of their heads. If you are lucky, one of the players will actually put the ball into this structure with a net around it called the "goal" and his team will be given one point and create an insurmountable lead. Football is a contact sport. Spring practice is development time. Some of the players are not ready to be thrown into a game yet and key players like QBs might get harmed in these games. The BCS teams would make a killing playing the non-bcs teams at their stadiums. No BCS team would risk losing to another BCS team in a game like this. It would become a joke to those with half a brain and a "great testament to the pagentry of amateur athletics" to those working at ESPN. Here's an idea for a contact sport for you: Go to the Y-bridge and jump off

I think Ben is going to play up top with Darren. He got minutes there last year, and he has been getting a lot of his minutes there this Spring. It seems like that is what Porter is leaning towards right now. Yesterday Luke Holmes actually played LM so maybe that is an option. My prediction right now is: GK: Meves RB: Yedlin CB: Barson CB: Gallego LB: Stevenson/Culbertson/Porter's Son/out of nowhere recruit that magically appears over the summer DM:Balogun RM: Trapp LM: Holmes AM:Caldwell F: Speas F: Mattocks I also think Brenes and Ontiveros could be in the mix somewhere and maybe compete for one of the starting spots

This forum has died a little, as expected with this time of the year, but I wanted try to get a discussion going about what people think next year's starting lineup could look like. It's really tough to predict at this point with all the variables in the team, but I wanted to get some other individuals' outlook on this. Here is my prediction: GK: Meves and that's all I got

Akron v. Xavier
yazan07 replied to MontrealExposloveZippy's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
2-2 final. Xavier goals came in roughly the first 2 minutes and the last two minutes. This seems to happen to us a lot. I saw some good footwork from Luke Holmes, and Tommy Schmitt had some really good looks, just didn't finish on any of them. There were about three or four times I was expecting to see a goal out of him. If he keeps getting minutes and keeps playing the way he has been playing, I think it will come soon enough. Kyle Culbertson came in towards the end of the first half and in the second half he pulled a couple of Kofi-esque runs out of nowhere to get deep into the attack and he made some good crosses. He was the only sub used in this game. I'll be interested to see how he develops. Darren, as it has been stated before, is still Darren. One of the other guys in the Rowdies section made the joke "Don't the other players on the team know by now that if Darren passes you the ball he expects you to pass it right back to him?" We also kept making jokes that he is still just learning how to pass the ball and it is new to him. It's interesting to see Porter continue to switch-up the starting 11. This time last year, we pretty much knew who would be starting in the Fall, but I really wouldn't be able to guess that at this point. It will be even more interesting to see who competes for playing time when the rest of the new guys come in. I am also anticipating a few new signees over the summer, as players are dropping from our roster. I made a comment earlier this year that it seemed we would have a logjam up top. Well, there were some rumors going around today, and so I checked the roster on gozips, and it seems that in addition to Richard Diaz and Gabe Genovesi, Darren Mattocks' fellow Rastafarian McKauly Tullloch is no longer a Zip. I would love to be behind closed doors to see what is going on in there. Seems like anyone who might be not be considered a huge role player is getting axed. Not everyone can contribute all the time, but I guess this probably keeps the competition pretty tough amongst the team. There was also a little tiff between us and a parent from the other team. That was pretty funny, I'll maybe tell that story later when I'm bored. Only one more Spring game and that's it until next Fall. -
MLSsoccer story on Valentin
yazan07 replied to bobbyake's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Actually, I think they might be pronouncing it right and we were pronouncing it wrong at Akron for two years. Check out his audio diaries that he made while the U20s were in Guatemala. He actually pronounces his own name as Valenteen, which makes me think that is the correct pronunciation. Also, these two segments are really funny, and feature not only Zarek, but his 'special guest' Perry 'whats cookin' in the' Kitchen. If you have free time, I would definitely give them a listen. -
That's great that Porter will be there with these guys, especially since they cannot be in Akron this Spring.

I was wondering if anyone made the trip to Xenia today. I didn't go because of homework that I didn't even do. The team tied their first two games against Wright State and Notre Dame 0-0 and won their third game against Cincinnati off PK (Caldwell). Could anyone who was there report on how the team looked, who played, and who stood out? It's nice to hear that we apparently defended well by not conceding any goals, but it's too bad that our only goal in three games came off a PK.

Remember that Genovesi also runs track for us. Even though his event wasn't on Saturday (he ran the 800 today), I wonder if he was with the track team since it was an actual tournament instead of an exhibition. It is weird if he played soccer last week and now isn't on the roster. Yeah that is true that he is on the track team and it would make more sense to be with a team that is actually competing than a team just participating in an exhibition game. But again, he is not on the roster which is peculiar.

Ok well as the team was warming up I noticed a few players missing. I looked online and it seems that Gabe Genovesi and Richard Diaz are no longer on the roster. I made a comment a while ago that with the addition of the new players along with the returners, we were going to have a lot of forwards and some of them still were not going to get playing time, I guess someone else felt the same way. I wonder if they chose to leave or if it was "suggested" to them by Porter. It's interesting because like I mentioned a few posts above, I was in Michigan last week and I saw Genovesi play.

After losing Kofi Zarek and Korb, I feel like our defense is a mess and is going to be the toughest thing to rebuild. Barson was really carrying the load back there. Dagilis didn't impress me and neither did Stevenson. It is going to be tough to replace Kofi; that was such an important position for our attacking system and he played it so well. I'm crossing my fingers that Yedlin and Gallego will be able to bring a lot to the table from day one and will maybe even be prepared to get the starting nod come the first game of the season. I still just don't know about that left back position though. I can't tell much about Kyle Culbertson from what I have seen so far. Last week in Michigan Genovesi did play that spot for a half like it had been mentioned a while ago that he would. Again, I didn't really see anything too amazing out of him and it wasn't really enough time to judge, but I don't think he was even there today. As far as the rest of the field goes, we have the talent we just need to put everything together. Glad it is only Spring, there is still plenty of time for this team to grow.

2011 Schedule and New Facility Name
yazan07 replied to tbozeglav's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Just wondered if you were considering the UCSB or Northridge tournament at all. Thanks for the information on Chivas. That's too bad because they are fun to watch...from what I've seen, they seem to do fine at getting the ball near and into the box, but just don't seem to have the touch or combination to put it in the net. They then seem to either get frustrated or sloppy (due to pushing too hard to score) and leave themselves vulnerable. but hey, at least they have a sense of humor -
Actually, and don't quote me on this, I think that we played the Real Madrid C team and the GA team played the Real Madrid B team. The only reason I know this is because I did a little bit of studying before the Zips' Spain trip to figure out exactly how the different divisions of Spanish soccer work. Also it doesn't say that they played Rayo Vallecano reserves, it might have been their first team. But still I see what you mean it is interesting that both our team and the GA team played teams from the same clubs.

It is worse than you guys think. I used to be an RA and I have a lot of friends who still work in the halls. Gallucci had problems of people sneaking in through the side doors as mentioned earlier, so they had them sealed so that they will only open if the fire alarm is pulled. Basically what this means is that whoever is the culprit of this incident either lives in the building or is friends with someone who allowed them to enter the building. The front door is the only way in or out. Basically either way you look at it, a student living in the building had a hand in this robbery. Definitely a scary thing for those who live there.

Opportunities to see our Pro SoccerRoos

Perry Captained the U20 National team to a 4-0 win against Suriname last night. He and Zarek both started and played the full 90 minutes. -
Nice grab, Yaz. Those facilities look world class. Wow! I am still waiting to get a good look #9 Diego Navarrete. Guess I will see on Saturday. Has anyone an update on Luke Holmes? Found out last night that Luke Holmes is out this semester due to some transfer rules, apparently.

Five Zips? That's good to hear! Who are we talking about and how did you get this info? This is only a guess on my part, but the Cleveland Internationals roster from last summer may be an indicator of which Zips. I believe that Nanchoff and Ponikvar played for the Internationals last summer. Of course, Nanchoff wouldn't be there this year, but I've forgotten the others...I think there were about 5 or 6 then. I thought I read somewhere that the Internationals sold out to the Akron Summit Assault. Yeah I was thinking the same thing and I looked up the roster last night and saw that Matt Dagilis was also on the squad. I guess we will find out soon enough.
