  1. I often wonder if Speas would have started this year too. I think he definitely could have started during the pre-Holmes stretch, but I'm not sure about now. No way he takes Darren's spot, and as of lately, Tommy has just been lighting it up game after game. Sometimes when Luke gets the ball, it blows my mind how good his touch is. Someone suggested that maybe he could have played as a box-to-box guy, but if I'm not mistaken, I had heard that one of the criticisms of Ben when he was here was that he wasn't that good at defending.
  2. Are there any substitution retrictions in college soccer?? I thought the rules were similar to international rules. Nope, unlimited substitutions. However, a player cannot re-enter a game in the same half that he left in. EDIT: No re-entry in the first half - One re-entry in the second half I wish I knew for sure -- I thought it was the opposite -- no re-entry for second half. Can someone find the actual rules on line? -- I've looked and can't find. If you start second half you can be subbed out and come back in. If you sub in in second half and then come out you are finished for the game. No. You are allowed one RE-ENTRY in the second half. You can come in at any point, exit, and re-enter. You don't have to start the second half. Anyone can then enter in the OT period, but you cannot re-enter either time. Well we know for sure that it isn't NO reentry in the second half, since Barson came out and then went back in last night.
  3. I'm kinda jealous of the tool who took it, I would LOVE to have Nano's road kit from last year.
  4. Seriously? Yeah, obviously the money we are spending on some bushes would have fully built a new basketball arena AND bought us the magical "football team-enhancing elixir" that is currently being developed. Now how we gonna afford those things?
  5. Ha, yeah I watched that game and noticed the same thing. I even mentioned it to lilroodude who was also watching the game. I have to give it to Perry though, despite his mistakes, he has had a heck of a year. He hasn't been really flashy but he has had a huge impact for DC. When he was brought in, I think Ben Olsen would have liked to try him out at D-Mid, where I believe he will shine the best (like he did at Akron) but personnel issues forced him to play exclusively at center back. Then when DC's starting right back suffered a season-ending injury, a new center back was brought in and Perry was forced to play wide. Then last week, due to several injuries and a suspension, Perry was put back in the middle against Columbus, where he had not played in a while with a new defensive partner. He is currently leading DC in minutes played, the only games he didn't play were those he missed for international duty, and the only game he didn't start was the one right after he came back from playing with the U-20s (I think). All of this in his rookie season. Thanks for that update, Yaz. I have only seen DCU a couple times this season, and didn't know PK was atop the team's minutes played chart. Wow! BTW -- I think Perry played mostly RB for the US U-17 teams for a couple years. Yeah true, I think I had read that he used to play wide. It says a lot about him as a player that he is so versatile. And yeah, Chris Pontius was leading the team in minutes until he suffered a season ending injury as well. I hope to see Perry in the Olympics next year.

  7. and... #3 in Soccer America: http://www.socceramerica.com/article/44052...ens-top-25.html Go Zips ! Big Poll tomorrow... look for another #3 Big game Wednesday for the Polls... could get us up there a notch or two. Can't blame the voters for showing UConn and Maryland a lot of respect for the top teams that they played over the weekend. They deserve to be #1 and #2... right now. Here it is!
  8. Weather forecast calls for rain and much cooler than normal temps. UCSB poster on BigSoccer predicts 5k if rain and 8-10K if not. No where close to record. Maybe fans have given up as they already have 3 losses. I am not in the least bit complaining, because our attendance has been spectacular, but wouldn't that be INSANE to have 10,000 at a Zips game?
  9. True dat. I had the same expectations and now I feel the same way. Caleb Porter for president!
  10. I'm not sure I would be too worried about the gauchos by themselves, but it is their fans that concern me. This is probably going to be one of the few, if only games this season where crowd could have a negative impact on our Zips. I wish I could be there to support them. It would be incredible to have the Gauco Locos vs. the ROWDIES, but I think distance will probably prevent that showdown from ever happening in full force outside of a College Cup.
  11. GoZipsGoZips started this thread and the "time to look at another GK" thread. My suspicions of him being Anthony Ponikvar's mother are starting to rise.
  12. the problem with soccer stats is that they don't keep stats for things like preventing shots on goals. Meves is really good and with a little leg strength, could find himself playing in the MLS. His stats for USL Chicago Fire: SOG - 38 GA - 3 Saves - 35 GAA - .426 SO - 5 He saved 92% of the shots on goal. http://www.uslsoccer.com/teams/2011/22315.html#STATS I remember the Chicago Fire PDL got kicked out of the US Open Cup on a 3-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City (the senior squad, not a PLD team) so if he really only had three goals against him all summer, that means all three came from a professional team.
  13. Last year, had everyone stayed Perry would have been on the backline, Zarek out wide opposite Kofi and maybe Nano in the midfield with Ampai, Nagbe, and Gavin? Gavin left after three years so last year would have been his final year. Wow, we could have had Perry Kitchen this year and then two more years! I figure by his senior year we would have been playing a 1-5-4 cause he wouldn't have needed any help for as good of a defender as he is. But realistically, he was never coming to play more than one year. Says a lot about his talent as well as all of our other guys who left early.
  14. I saw many red shirts piled up on a table. I asked what they were going to do with them and they said they planned to donate them. Not sure how this helps lessen the red plague in NE Ohio. Im cool with it if they donate them to communities outside the country.... Very true. A few years ago I was on a mission trip to an orphanage in out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere-Russia and saw one orphan kid wearing an Akron t-shirt and one wearing a Canton McKinley t-shirt. It was pretty cool. So funny story, I didn't have an Ohio State shirt cause I just don't, but I wanted the new free Akron shirt. So I went to a thrift store and purchased a $1.50 OSU shirt that is probably going to go back to a thrift store. What a way to work the system.
  15. Same here man. Sometimes I spend just as much energy yelling at other students as I spend yelling at the goalkeeper. Then they just stare at me like I'm an idiot. We have the strength of 2,000 students for about the first 5-10 minutes and then it just tapers off. Once we get a lead it gets worse and then we try to come back after we get scored on. I wish I could make everyone care more. Attendance records are awesome, and nothing in the world looks more impressive than looking on the hill and seeing it packed with students. But if only some of us are going to cheer, I'd rather the rest leave so at least those of us trying to support our team would be close together and more capable of coordinating chants.
  16. Alright so here is the story from my end of the field. We came into this game ready to tear John Bluem a new one mainly because of his comment last year about how Konrad Warzycha "could have got a yellow" on the play where he kicked a ball at Darlington's head. I honestly thought before the game "you know, that guy really had it wrong on that call, but maybe he couldn't see what happened clearly because the game had just ended and he hadn't reviewed it, or maybe he was just sticking up for his player." I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. After tonight, no way. So we are giving him crap, yelling at him and playing the game where we keep the balls from their missed shots and don't kick them back until someone comes for them. Then, one of the guys next to me is really giving it to Bluem and telling him how awful he is. Rude? Yes. ROWDIE? YES. Acceptable for college students? Yeah, it's college sports. So Bluem walks over and gives him the worst glare I have ever seen. Literally, I was waiting for lasers to shoot out of his eyes. But instead something else happened. The 58 year old head coach of THE Ohio State University men's soccer team purposely kicked the ball at a 22 year old college student. He took a step and kicked it at him, on purpose. Funny part is, apparently the guy can't aim and he hit me instead. Did it hurt? No. Did it bruise? I wish. Was it completely unacceptable? You bet. They sure are class acts down there in Columbus.
  17. . Not quite Oklahoma State's basketball lounge, but looks like one of the coolest facilities I have seen on campus.
  18. I saw this kind of crap versus Fullerton and it was not a pretty sight. I only heard the audio of the Fullerton match. However bad that was, expect worse from OSU. From the coach on down, OSU hates that Akron is better. This is our biggest rivalry, Bisbee. And don't let any of the brainwashed OSWho fans tell you that it's not true. They wouldn't bring two busloads of fans up here if they were not desperately trying to avoid allowing the state of Ohio to know that Akron is superior to the athletic program that spends tons of money to try to BUY titles. This raises a pretty good question for me. I don't know too much about other college sports, and I don't know a ton about the athletic programs of the other schools in Ohio, but lets be honest, Ohio State is either great or just really good at almost everything. Could someone answer this for me: Do you think our soccer team is the only athletic program from Ohio that is better than Ohio State at the same sport? I was just wondering if like Bowling Green had a killer women's golf team or something. If not, it's no wonder this makes them mad. I know, being someone who grew up in central Ohio surrounded by the people who worship Ohio State without having set foot on their campus, that being better than them at a sport feels good. It probably sucks for them and I love that. Just wondering if we were the only Ohio school that has that distinction. Miami hockey program is better....but the gap is not as big as the soccer programs at UofA and OSU. Oh yeah that's right. I should have known that because I have a friend who just graduated from Miami and she is always talking about their hockey team.

  20. Both teams are coming off wins, ours being the 3-0 thrashing of Tulsa, and Ohio State beat Michigan in Columbus 3-2 in overtime. Michigan isn't as good this year as they were last year so I think this shows us a bit about where OSU stands. Even against their rival and with their brand-new-awesome-behind-the-goal-student-section, they still needed OT (albeit it was less than a minute of OT). Mattocks came back from his suspension ready to strike and had a hat trick, I hope he can come up big tomorrow.
  21. To top it all off, about 500 of the "14,000" were high school band members who I'm willing to bet also brought their proud band moms and band dads. I wonder how many Zips fans were at the game today? The student section was pathetic, but I don't blame any other students for not coming, it really isn't that much fun. Even winning today wasn't that much fun.
  22. Is Tulsa ranked?
  23. I guess my other answer to this question is that I trust Porter because he has never steered us wrong before! Whoever he chooses to play is probably the right man for the job.
  24. Saw the team walking to the JAR yesterday and Dials was with them. I think he is back with the good guys
  25. In my opinion, there just really isn't any point in playing another goalkeeper. GK isn't like other positions. They aren't running around as much so they really don't need to "rest a game." If anything, I would think taking them out a game would make them less sharp. From every high level of soccer I have watched, you just don't pull a keeper unless he is hurt or playing poorly. Until then, there is no reason to pull Meves. If the concern is that he may leave at the end of the season and that we need to give someone else some experience, well we will have eight months to figure out a replacement, not a problem. Putting in a backup keeper because you think that the opponent is easy enough that we can do that really shows that we wouldn't be taking that game seriously, and we all know what happens when you don't take a lesser opponent seriously: Cleveland State beats you.
