2016 Zips in Pro Leagues Domestic & International
yazan07 replied to Zip_ME87's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Long time no see! I was doing some reading about the draft and thought I would pop my head in. Looks like Souders was on the combine list but is not anymore. Wondering if that means Columbus is signing him, or if he has opted to try his luck overseas rather than heading to MLS. Also of note: Jared is coaching one of the combine teams with (surprise) a Timbers coach as his assistant http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/01/03/rosters-named-2016-adidas-mls-player-combine-ft-lauderdale -

Guys tonight Evan Bush is becoming a man. Montreal is playing in Estadio Azteca against Club America in the CCL Final. 100,000 Mexican fans. I'm watching now (only on Fox Sports II or Unimas in Spanish) and every time he has a goal kick fans are shining lights in his face. And Montreal just scored!!! -

There is an AO Akron Fantasy League, I imagine there would be a lot of overlap in personnel, so it would be great if everyone just joined our league! Code is 10309-2268 -

If you are in the Akron area, come to Ray's Pub in Highland Square! There will be a contingent of US fans there from AO Akron, some of us are Zips fans as well. -

Ugh really? Can't fault the Johnny Football hype train since that's what people care about, but (and I didn't see this video) what could have been neater is the interview being presented as the opinion of the Cleveland QB from a different pro athlete from Cleveland. Oh well. It's happened to bigger stars than Darlington Yeah that was a real thing a few years back. Anyway, I came here to post that, for what it's worth (not much really) MLS did a mock draft and had Saad going to LA with the last pick of the first round. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/12/17/mock-draft-v10-less-month-go-mls-campus-looks-ahead-2015-superdraft -

Ben Swanson signed a homegrown contract with the senior team a couple months back http://www.thecrew.com/news/2014/10/crew-sign-homegrown-player-ben-swanson-special-crew-youth-soccer-event-thursday -
It's not really just a guessing game. A skilled goalkeeper can read a player's body language to try to figure out which way they will go. Also, MLS used to have shoot outs like you described, but they axed them because no one else in the world does it like that. I have posted a video of this below for your viewing pleasure. As you can see, it does give the GK a better chance of stopping the kick though. This was San Jose's 4th shoot out in a row in only their 5th game, and they would end the season with 12 because games couldn't end in ties at the time. Cameos in this MLS relic include an obnoxious amount of the "charge" cheer, the squad # 0, and a goalkeeper wearing a baseball cap. Aodhan Quinn's father was San Jose's coach that year.

This story is great. Porter is one of a kind

This is a good point. This is a University of Akron facility we are talking about. A university of Akron facility built for University of Akron students and a University of Akron program. As a University of Akron facility it makes sense that it should be used to serve the Cleveland Browns.

Dude someone copied your post here word for word except theirs was about football. That is plagiarism

I actually didn't know about this until the other day either. I had been wondering why he wasn't playing and was told Jared probably wanted to experiment with him outside of the lineup since he would be suspended for the first few games of the season. That was the first I heard about it.

Actually, Matt Doyle believes Scotty stays in the lineup, and Jones plays in font of him. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/08/24/armchair-analyst-can-jermaine-jones-make-new-england-revolution-contenders-e -

Well, Scott Caldwell's season pretty much just ended as the Revs landed Jermaine Jones today. -
So, I know it is obviously incredibly early to be hitting the panic button, and I'm not yet. But I was thinking last night at the game why it's incredibly important to have a good season this year. Soccer blew up in Akron for a number of reasons: winning, winning against big teams, national championship, top players in the country, consistently high rankings, and a fantastic coach who was easy to get behind. But one factor that I think can't be overlooked is that our football team has been pretty awful over the last few years in a city looking for a winner. When your football team wins 1 game a year, people will look for something else to fill that void, and people who maybe wouldn't normally care as much about soccer were willing to get behind it. Porter and Ianello coincided perfectly for the soccer program. But here is what worries me: I absolutely want our football program to get better, and I think it will, and last year we had a big year which I was happy about. But if that team continues to get better, and this team starts to decline...well I think soccer goes back to being an afterthought around here, which is sad to think about. I think our program could easily go back to being what they were like the pre-Porter era. Am I getting ahead of myself here?

2013 Zips in the MLS, NASL, USLPro Thread

When did we just stop using the 2014 version of this thread and revert to the 2013 one? Okay well Bush is going to keep getting games: http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/07/23/montreal-impact-plan-keep-evan-bush-goal-insist-not-demotion-troy-perkins -
MLS doesn't need to increase the # of DPs they just need to increase the salary cap. No need to increase the DP slots until most teams have owners willing to spend for more than 3. Right now when Columbus, Chicago, New England, etc. only have one. If they add more spots, the team with owners who have deep pockets will only go further ahead.

I'm not banking on it...which you wouldn't know since I dropped the big bucks on this beauty

I know this game should have piggybacked on the popularity of the WC right now, but I think that actually hurt attendance here. I know AO Akron spent a lot of time pimping the WC match Monday night, and even though that's our job as an American supporter group, I probably would have tried to make a little more noise about this game if the US-Ghana wasn't the most important thing going on. If you don't have the Word Cup going on, and our first game isn't the night before, this game is probably the only thing soccer fans in Akron are talking about for days leading up to it.
