Initially I liked the thought of keeping the arena on campus. Easier for the majority of the students to get to the games. I must say I am liking the idea of bringing it downtown. It will make it easier for commuters and alumni and I like the thought of it helping downtown businesses such as restaurants and bars. It will bring more money to the university and more money to the Akron community. As was mentioned, I can't see the University having any trouble raising the funds and government (city, state and federal) money as it will help a city which has had better days.

The Zips!!!!! We are the only team that can take us out this year. I guess my memory is too long, but I am still in awe of the Notre Dame game in the tourney last year. If ever a team didn't want to win, it was Akron. They had that game in hand, but just could not shoot... at all!!!!! That is my only fear going into the MAC championship this year, no one else but ourselves.

Yeah, before we look on to bigger and better conferences we have to prove we can compete. The sad fact is, UofA football is one of the reasons that MAC football is looked so down upon. If we can turn this around, and I hope we can, then so can all of the MAC and we can become more respectable. I also can't help but think, why do so many schools want out of the Big East? Why leave the MAC just to get done in by a sinking ship? Truth is with Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan all so close to the Akron area, Akron will never get the blue chip recruits. Besides, losing the Can't State rivalry in football and basketball would be a blow to both our schools.

As a New Jersey born, University of Akron alumni, damn it feels good to be a Giants fan! The satisfaction is on many levels. Also, now I get to rub into my Rutgers friends about Akron superiority even more.

POLL: How many wins in 2012 will you be happy with?
acstorfer replied to NewZipsFan's topic in Akron Zips Football
Considering the last two years, I will be ecstatic with four wins. I know this might sound silly, but with Jason Taylor's retirement from the nfl, could he not be brought in to help with recruiting? I mean it won't make us competitive with Big 10 schools, but seeing Jason Taylor at my door would make me very interested in what Akron has to offer. -
I don't see the Super Bowl even being close this year. Yes, I am bias being a Jersey born and raised Giants fan, but nonetheless, the Patriots just don't match up. Offensively I give the Giants a pretty hefty edge. At quarterback I consider Manning and Brady a wash, if not a slight edge to Eli. Yes, Eli doesn't meet up to Brady legend wise (yet), but Eli isn't intimidated by the "legend" thing either though. In fact, over their last three meetings only two of them were meaningful and Eli took both those games. Running game: Huge edge to Giants! This edge is especially huge considering the atrocious run defense by the Patriots. The Giants will control the game through the run which will lead to a time of posession of about 35 - 40 minutes. Short passing game: Edge to the Patriots. Brady will have to live with the short pass this game. The Giants know this and will be prepared for this. The Giants will give up the small play happily and will clamp down hard in the red zones. Also, don't forget that the Giants have a more than capable short game themselves. Big play: Huge advantage Giants! Again, just a brutal big play duo and a horrible Patriots defense. Branch will probably burn the Giants once or twice but not enough to really be a deciding factor. And again, Ocho Cinco will play no factor. Defenses: Giants advantage HUGE! On paper it appears the Pats defense improved during the playoffs, they didn't. Look at who NE faced in the playoffs, Denver and Baltimore. Neither are offense first teams. Strength of schedule: New England with the exception of Baltimore last week, has not beaten one team that finished with a winning record. Their number 1 seed was an absolute joke, their schedule was a joke. Every good team the Patriots faced this year, beat them. Again, with the exception of the Baltimore game. Now about that Baltimore game, there was no good reason Baltimore should have lost that game. I've never seen a team give away a game like that. The Giants on the other hand had one of the most difficult schedules in the NFL, in fact the second half of the schedule was the most difficult schedule in the NFL. Also, they were also the most injured team this year as well. It was amazing they even got to the playoffs! Even with the week by week bashing by great opponents, even with the hobbled starting lineup, they still already beat the Patriots. Now that they will be playing them a full strength, it will be a massacre.

Back to point. Giants rule! Loved seeing Chase Blackburn have a pretty darn good game. Giants did the right thing bringing him back. He is forgiven for not getting off the field quick enough in the Super Bowl. Wish Dominic Hixon was still around.

Is this scenario possible?
acstorfer replied to acstorfer's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Last year, being in CA was impossible. If Akron is going to be representing in Alabama, I am going to be there representing with em! -
Is this scenario possible?
acstorfer replied to acstorfer's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
yeah, just looked at the bracket. well, still glad to be seeing the zips in some post-season action. even if it won't be live. i am thinking there is going to be a lot of head turners and early exits for highly ranked teams this year. GO ZIPS!!!!! -
Considering how high we were ranked throughout the year, even without winning the MAC, i can't see Akron not making it into the tournament. Of course I know next to nothing. Still, what I am REALLY impressed with is the fact that with the exodus we had last year, this was a pretty successful "rebuilding" year already.

Since moving to San Antonio, Florida, I've gotten to see very little Zips soccer. Just a game on tv. I missed the Lady Zips playing USF and I am still bummed I wasn't there to cheer them on. So my question is easy for you diehards. Is there any scenario where Akron will have to play South Florida during the championship tournament?

Scores from around the Nation
acstorfer replied to mes102's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I think that is true. But I will argue that is better for us to be under rated than over at this time. I would rather them have something to prove....and work to prove it.No, we need a top 4 seed for the Tournament to be guaranteed home games through to the Final Four. The prospects of playing UConn or Maryland on the road are ominous.Oh my God I am a selfish jerk! I am living in the Tampa area now and I would love to see a scenario where the Zips have to come play at USF. I am still pissed about missing the Lady Zips playing at University of South Florida. -
Sorry if this has been posted. Okay, so it probably doesn't really matter, but this year it looks like Capital One made soccer a Tier One sport. Which means instead of only getting 40 points last year, Akron would have gotten 60. Yeah, we wouldn't have won the top prize, but I am pretty sure we would have beaten Ohio State. Oh well, looks like the Zips will have to exceed expectations and win it all again this year!
-
I moved to south Florida recently, fairly close to USF. I was devastated when I found out the day after, the lady Zips were at South Florida. I certainly wish I went to support them. Well, USF men's soccer has some steam going. Maybe somehow the stars will align and somehow a tournament match will host the men's Zips here. Of course if that happens things can't be going good for Akron. Okay, I have no idea how that will be possible, but I really want an excuse to be loud and rowdy for Akron here in south Florida!

Ugh, I was so disappointed with the halftime commercial! There was a pregame commercial all about soccer, they should have stuck with that one all day! O-A O-A O-A O-A

The question must be asked
acstorfer replied to acstorfer's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
2010 team Best season: no Best team: no 2009 team Best season: not quite Best team: yes Hmmm, what two future Herman Award winners, nine future MLS soccer draftees. I think those are the numbers, and my God, so close! I have to agree, but being so close, but not doing... Ugh, such a great season, but they didn't do it. I think CSU was a fluke, I still got to say 2010 was the most talented ever. They got it done. Either, or. Was there a more talented college soccer team, other than the 2009 or 2010 Zips? I mean really, both seasons were basically an all college all star team! -
Dwight Smith won a Super Bowl playing with Tampa. He even had two interception returns for TD's and would have been a likely choice for MVP had it not already been awarded before his second interception return. Wow, thats very cool indeed. Thank you. I just wish Jason Taylor was playing today. Not even so much for the Jets, again they are a local team, but not many deserve a ring as much as JT. And LT as well, but he wasn't a Zip!

As a New Jersey native, long time Giants fan, 2007 was so special a win for me. Besides my beloved Giants winning their third Super Bowl, it was so cool seeing Dominic Hixon and Chase Blackburn representing. So what Chase couldn't get off the field! Do any other Zips sport Super Bowl rings besides Dominic and Chase?

The question must be asked
acstorfer replied to acstorfer's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
The CSU comment is very true. It can't be described as the best season by any measure. What I mean by best team, I'm kinda talking about the most talented team. If that makes any sense. -
I've got to ask! With the unequaled amount of Generation Adidas contracts and the mystifying number of drafts this year, well, is this last years Zips soccer squad the best college soccer team ever? Kinda tough question, especially seeing I kinda think last years team was a better team. Just a great season! Okay, the final outcome sucked, but just a great team. So, was this last Zips soccer squad the best ever in college soccer? If no, then who and why?

First off, I've loved the UofA putting up Super Bowl commercials over these last couple years, but highlighting the Mens Zips soccer championship... A very proud alum!

7 starters to leave soccer team
acstorfer replied to MaxZIP's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
With five GA selectees, the most ever chosen from one team, is there an argument to make for, 2010 Zips Soccer, best team ever? Yeah, I went there. -
I'm just curious to know if it's just me. Since the Zips won the NCAA soccer championship, I have been wearing my University of Akron sweatshirts pretty much everyday.

Lady Zips Competitiveness?
acstorfer replied to UAZipster0305's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
First off, Chase Blackburn, Domenic Hixon (what can I say, I'm a Giants fan and they both have rings) and oh, another Zip footballer worth noting... John Heisman! Secondly, just geography can easily explain why we can never be competitive in the upper echelon of college football. OSU, Penn State, Michigan, etc., we can never recruit over those historical powerhouse schools in spitting difference. Even the Big East schools aren't that far. Saying that, we should be much more competitive within the MAC. There is no excuse for last year's record, especially considering the resources which were spent. Basketball? I don't see why we can't be competitive there. Anyone ever hear of Gonzaga before the 90's? The JAR is a nice home court. Then again, it looks like we are doing better there. We won the MAC two years ago, lost in the NCAA tournament to Gonzaga and the Zips were competitive throughout most of the game. We should have won the MAC last year. So we are getting there, we just need to outrecruit CSU. As far as the dividends for winning a national championship in soccer, it won't be from increased attendance or television. It will be from alumni support.
