  1. I believe I've heard it's an achilles issue. I'm not sure how serious, but it kept him out of the 1st game and will also keep him out this weekend.
  2. I'll throw my 2 cents in:8. If he's ready to go full bore, play Anthony Holmes more! He's the only corner we have who is a physical match-up for many opposing receivers. He's great on the corner blitz too.
  3. The line has shifted some, with Temple now a 15 point favorite. "The Cos" must have plunked down a few bills on his Owls. I really hope they're looking ahead to Penn St.I'd really like see a Zip, any Zip (perhaps my newest favorite unsung Zip, true FR walk-on, #47 Gary Ransom) light someone up on the opening kickoff to send a message that the Zips have come to play.
  4. JZ84 is The Tailgate Gourmetâ„¢. Sounds good, but I don't see anything about Mango beer. My set-up is a simple as it comes. Since you can't do charcoal, I focus on foods I can prepare ahead of time and keep warm on my little, portable propane grill. I leave the big stuff up to you Pros!
  5. I'll be in Lot 9 between 1 and 1:30, with a group of 4. The menu is as follows:1) Harira (spicy, middle eastern soup/stew made with chickpeas/garbanzos/cicis....is there a bean with more names?)2) Chicken and sausage3) Veggies w/hummus4) S'mores5) OBC beer (Verich Gold, Cardinal Ale, Buckeye Blonde)
  6. The coaches who preceded Saban and Meyer must have done a wonderful job of stocking their rosters with great players so that Nick and Urban could be so successful right out of the gate.Isn't there an old saying of A great coach can beat you with his players and then turn around and beat you with your players? A great coach can make fair talent look pretty darn good. A bad coach can make that same talent look terrible.Of course I'm not saying these two aren't great coaches. But I think it's easy to sluff off the fact that they did this at two of the MAC's all-time winningest programs. The cupboard certainly wasn't bare when they arrived. It MAY be considerably harder at a place like UA, EMU or Temple, with little sustained success at the D-1 level. And Toledo was actually coming off of consecutive 6-5 seasons before hiring Saban (who only stayed 1 year, allowing Pinkel to get his career started in a nice environment).
  7. Sadly, that's not true, even within NCAA football.Football (soccer) has also had a number of accidents, including one involving Man U in 1960.
  8. Or a programming language?
  9. Golden was 9-4 in his 3rd year in the MAC. Temple was an Independent in 2006. So my original criteria stands.Golden also won 4 games in his 1st MAC year, after that 1-11 inaugural season. That's what I expect of Ianello. At minimum. Good discussion.I agree this is an excellent discussion. The Golden experience certainly gives some cause for hope. Take a look at his early years, especially 2006 and the early part of 2007. As bad as some of our results have been recently, I think these probably eclipse them in terms of "suckiness". I mean there is a 42-7 loss to U@B, a home loss to K.E.N.T., and a 62-0 home loss to Louisville among the lowlights.Another program that provides another possible parallel is Syracuse (our good friends), since Marrone also reportedly runs a tight ship with a pro-style offense up there. His turn-around has been at a quicker pace for sure (4-8 in 1st year followed by 8-5 with a bowl win last year), but he also had to tear the existing program apart to the point where scholly numbers were scary (mid 60s).I'm not saying iCoach is equal to either guy. But these examples indicate our current course does not necessarily have to end in abject failure. Having said that, I'm in the "4 wins minimum camp" for 2011 or else I will lose faith this staff can ever do the job. There are two things I can count on. I will be cheering, exhorting, pleading the team to pull off the upset this Saturday AND I will have a fantastic time in Lot 9 ahead of the game
  10. One potential advantage the Zips have this week is the possibility that the Owls will be looking ahead to hosting Penn St on Sept 17. The Philadelphia Inquirer has this story.
  11. I just got done watching it and you are correct, B&G. I thought it was funny when Frenchy added Ransom to the list. He actually played some LB as well and made a really nice stop before the last TD. Not bad for a walk-on true FR from Zanesville. I was good friends with another a LB from Zanesville when I was an undergrad (Gerald "Bud" Alfman).
  12. This is why iCoach should have simply said "nice game" and left it at that. I figured someone would take this and run. I'm not saying he didn't have a reason for griping. You just don't do it in front of the cameras.
  13. Everybody should be able to make a ton of money than. We are only 14 point underdogs. The Dr speaks, and the betters listen! OK so it's only a slight shift, but it does indicate where the early money is going. We'll see where it lands at the end of the week. Betters??? Or bettors?? One would think there are no betters ;-) Ouch.....bettors! You got me before Zipmeister did!

  15. Of course there are no sure things, but the main dividing point at the time of the hire was whether you were in the "FBS assistant camp" or the "FCS/D2 head coach camp". I still think hiring an FCS/D2 head coach would have been less of a risk.
  16. Do they run the same offense he ran here? Whatever it was, it usually produced a lot of yards and points. IIRC, the spread really wasn't around during those days. I believe the "official" offense under LO was the generic "multiple I" or something like that. I do recall a lot of I-formation. Rollouts were also common in the passing game. It was not a pro-set, although there were 4 and 5 wide sets added in Frye's later years. I agree, the offense was productive and had extremely good balance (run/pass).
  17. This simply isn't true and HERE is the proof. You do realize there is a search capability at the top right on the screen to find old threads and such on here. Winters has his detractors on here for sure. But I am most certainly not one of them, and I'm not alone. BTW, this is shaping up to be a watershed season for Paul and the long downtrodden Wayne St Warriors. He probably has his most talented team and the GLIAC title could very well be within reach. A D2 playoff berth is a good possibility regardless. A key game will be the Oct 15 encounter at Ashland, coached of course by Lee Owens. The Warriors started the season in fine fashion with a 69-24 thrashing of Urbana. They run a spread offense.
  18. Dave, There is always hope, otherwise we wouldn't be fans. Actually, Chisholm showed a few good fl.ashes against OSU, I'm interested in seeing what he can do this week. Let's put it this way. If Jawon had been on the opposing team last week, he'd have had 2 or 3 long TD runs. The opponent's remaining backs, while bigger and more powerful, didn't break any long ones because they aren't as fast as Chisholm. And his one-handed grab coupled with the sense to scurry out of bounds further cemented my impression that he has good hands and also let me know that he understands the game. But he can't run through walls, especially walls that are moving toward him. I think he's the type of back that just needs a crease. Hopefully he gets some against Temple. Like many, I'm extremely skeptical of how well the pro-set provides the Zips the best chance to compete. But any chance of competing is predicated on the running game having success. I said we'd be at least a 14 point 'dog, so the 14 point spread sounds about right to me. I won't say this is must win.....but I do think it is a "must compete". Edit: I'll clarify what I mean by "must compete". For lack of a better definition, I'll say it means the Zips must cover the spread.
  19. My wife thought they were very unusual and not in a good way!
  20. In the final MAC game of the weekend, EMU defeats Howard by a score of 41-9. No word on how badly the Howard band destroyed the Eastern band in the halftime show There's no doubt about it. The Zips schedule looks tougher after the 1st week of games. VMI did manage to lose to Delaware State at home 23-20 however.
  21. I'm also concerned about recruiting skip, but not so much directly because of losing to the in-state bully. After noting how the class of 2012 has been slow to commit, this heightened the importance of getting off to a good start this year. I've always viewed the Temple gave as paramount in this regard. Given yesterday's result at OSU and Temple's thrashing of 'Nova on Thursday, I expect the Zips to be at least 14 point underdogs in this all-important game. This staff is going to need the week of its collective life to put UA in a chance to win come Saturday.
  22. Odd? It was 90+ degrees; fans in the stands were going down with heat exhaustion. Game was OVER. Seems obvious that Nicely was in so that Moore wouldn't get hurt. He wouldn't get hurt doing what? If he hadn't gotten hurt earlier,he was going to get hurt in the 4th quarter against OSU's subs? Ianello knew that Moore wasn't moving the team and there was no reason to leave him in. That was not all Moore's fault OBVIUOSLY. Ianello decided to play a guy who as far as I know had never taken a DI snap. If you are worried about him getting hurt, you better take him out in the first half 'cause thats when the game was out of hand. I agree, but we're talking about iCoach. No way do I believe that he brought Nicely into the game to make a difference on offense. BTW, I also agree with your first post in this thread that the Temple game @ home will be more telling than this one. No I agree. I can't imagine that hee reason he brought Nicely in was to make a diff. in the game. Thats kind of what makes it weird. I hope he didn't think it was better to get Nicely hurt than Moore. I believe the point was that Moore was probably more prone to injury from cramping or exhaustion due to the conditions, since he had already played over a half with much of it running to escape the rush.
  23. I'm not sure who you mean by that. I don't recall reading one single post from anyone on this board who has ever said anything like "Ianello will get the job done if given the necessary amount of time". There are some of us, including myself, who have argued that there wasn't enough evidence last year to determine that he's incapable of ever getting the job done here. That doesn't mean we should wait forever of course. Certainly today's performance didn't do anything to help his cause. I'm willing to withhold final judgement until the end of this season. We'll see how the team does in the MAC, although I think the league is much improved this year. What is particularly troublesome for me is what I perceive as a lack of guts. I fear that's something that can't be learned. Withhold final judgement? The Zips quit In one way, I"ll agree. The coaching staff quit before the game even started by adopting the same ultra-conservative style we've grown to loath. But I strongly disagree that the team quit. I watched all 60 painful minutes, and I saw players TRYING to make plays until the bitter end. Maybe the earlier poster who suggested iCoach simply used this game for more film study is spot on.

  25. Ianello mumbled what seemed to be a complaint to Fickell as they shook hands. I'm not really sure what Rob has to complain about. As much as I disdain the red & silver, I don't think they rubbed it in.
