  1. OK, I'll bite. Herschel Walker?
  2. Players were set to the bench for a set period of time if they mouthed off. Usually 5 minutes. The teams played a man down for that time.and how did the ref get away with that?Sepp Blatter has just announced that the new FIFA trial rules will now be added to this year's World Cup in South Africa. And he will be personally supervising the penalty box. Blatter stated this will help help prevent needless "professional fouls", and violations such as Thierry Henry's handball in qualifying which kept Ireland out of South Africa. Also, goalkeepers will be referred to as "net minders", and will wear colorful masks painted with scenes of their home countries. Sepp Blatter......what a hoser.....
  3. It was my pleasure...don't forget to read Playing for Pizza.+1That goes +2 for anyone who grew up in Parma.......Ohio that is.
  4. While the prior margins of victory were not quite as severe in comparison (7 and 19 points), perhaps St. Mary's thrashing of Gonzaga last night (the Zags swept the regular season series with the Gaels) can provide some hope for the Zips if they DO happen to get another shot at K.E.N.T. ESPN Link
  5. I have also called upon KD to rethink his tactics if and when the Zips get another shot at K.E.N.T. But this brings up an interesting dilemma. Because of the nature of tournament basketball, there really is no time for extra or modified preparations aside from the early part of this week. Does he risk losing the team's focus on the game at hand (EMU) by installing special "K.E.N.T. Busting" strategies in these preceding days? Does he leave things alone, hoping for someone else to do the dirty work in eliminating the F.L.A.S.H.E.S.(or hoping for K.E.N.T. to have a poor outing against the Zips)? Or does he try to reinvent the Zips just enough to attempt to handle all comers?
  6. Interestingly, an excerpt from this article was used by FootballScoop.com for one of today's "quick hits".Link
  7. Cool! I'll give it a shot as well. Thanks for the tip
  8. Having started a new job at the beginning of the year, I'll have to not only miss the game at the Q but I won't even be able to watch it (assuming it's on TV) Oh well, let's hope the Zips begin a successful navigation of the Michigan directionals of Thursday afternoon and then I can join in the on-site revelry on Friday. Go Zips!!! This season is NOT over until it's over
  9. Tom Gaffney has another article about RI and his initial efforts to install his schemes at UA. On a side note, don't look for the 2011 schedule to be any easier than this year's. Games at OSU (9/3) and UC (9/17) have apparently been finalized.Link
  10. First and foremost, it's nice to hear that you're back on the court It's great that you provide such insight to the program as well. The two guys from 1350 am were talking to Jeff before the basketball game yesterday. When asked whether he had been accumulating the frequent flyer miles in pursuit of the numerous foreign players, he said he had signed all of them basically using only the tools of phone, mail and email. I thought that was quite remarkable. He pointed out that even if he was unsuccessful with certain recruits, the method often lead to other tips/contacts that eventually paid dividends. He only has one scholarship open this off-season, and it sounds like he'll be selective with it. Now that some positive momentum has been injected into the program, I'll bet the prospects of landing the most talented local players will improve greatly. All in all I was very impressed with what I heard.
  11. Joe Jakubick is definitely up there. So are Huggins and Wyatt Webb as coaches.
  12. Put me firmly in the camp that believes K.E.N.T. is more "A". Their size AND quickness in the backcourt consistently forced the Zips into more difficult shots that they typically take. While UA committed quite a few very ugly turnovers, I believe much of this was caused by the size and length of the F.L.A.S.H. defenders. It's pretty simple. Passing lanes are smaller when facing a team like them and the margin of error is smaller as well. Besides being more "A" however, they're also more "T" (tough) and "E" experienced. Nik seemed to stand out as one of the few Zips who actually welcomed the physical challenge. I absolutely loved it (one of the few bright moments) when he goaded Neanderthal Parks into the offensive foul in the 1st half. You could see Nik jawing with him before the ball was put into play, no doubt setting up Mr Brilliant to try to stubbornly force his way into the paint. He also did a nice job guarding Stinkletary when given the assignment. I understand the calls to play Zeke more, but I don't want it to come at the expense of Nik's minutes. He's one of the few Zips that actually causes a defensive match-up problem for the OTHER team.I've been reticent in the past few weeks to get into the KD "hot seat" discussions, because I really thought it was a rash, unreasonable argument at this point in time. Having said that, I do believe that a few of KD's decisions with the rotations did not help things on Friday. One that stood out was Nitro. Having him play the 3 against the average MAC team is one thing. Having him play that spot against K.E.N.T. is unfair to Brett. I thought KD wasn't going to stop riding him after he came out the 1st time after the Zips had given up their early lead (I told my buddy, it almost looked like the beginning of KD trying to "ride him off of scholarship"). Brett DID miss two key defensive box-outs that lead to K.E.N.T. put-backs, but I believe it was because Nitro is simply over-matched in trying to rebound against most any of the K.E.N.T. forwards. For me, the BIG mistake was putting him in the 3 spot at that point in the game. That 14-2 run was largely due to personnel selection, IMHO. Unfortunately, there was really no getting back in the game for the Zips after that.I'm not 100% against Nitro playing the 3. But the match-up needs to be carefully considered ahead of time. In fact, I'm not really hoping for many personnel/rotation moves heading into the early part of he tournament. The Zips have handled the rest of the MAC pretty well this year as is. BUT if we play K.E.N.T. one more time, only the insane or hopelessly head-strong would attempt to beat K.E.N.T. without a change in SOMETHING, be it strategy, rotations, or both.
  13. Trust me, I questioned the point of going to the tournament also after getting completely outclassed tonight for the 2nd time this year by that disgusting yellow bunch. But I'm going, because I'm a Zip fan and I won't let anything change that. I suppose we probably have to play EMU again if they get past NIU in Ypsi. That's not a great match-up, so we either get the ship righted quickly, or the suffering will be short and sweet. Either way, I'll keep the Great Lakes flowing
  14. Eat 'em up! Eat 'em up! Go Zips Go!!!!
  15. He would probably be equally thrilled with you for changing his last name and with them for changing his first name. How do I collect on the chicken dinner?Aha! The Meister has been caught in his own game! Please read the original contest rules and get back with me.
  16. Well according to this source, his name was actually Gondon Larson But, I do stand corrected once again by ZN's resident general editor, the Meister. BTW, the source below is the most convenient (by far) I've found when researching the score of a particular college football game of the past.Link
  17. Indiana doesn't sell out when OSU comes to town, and if they do it is b/c 1/2 are OSU fans.I expect a nice crowd for the Syracuse and Northern Illinois games. Anything else will be tough. For the GW game, they should promote perhaps a 50/50 raffle and/or a combination of that and some $$$ to charity. Something big will have to be done there to get attendance up. Of course, if they beat Syracuse, GW game might not be too bad. STUDENTS, STUDENTS, STUDENTS will be the key for those first couple games.Ergo, the GW game might not be too bad. I guaranty those Orangemen are going to be in for a world of hurt. And I will be there to join in the revelry that will usher in a new era of winning ZIPS football! Man, I can't wait. There would be nothing sweeter than starting off the season, and the RI regime, by winning the "rubber game of the match" against Syracuse. It sure beats breaking in a new staff against Salem-Tokyo (as they are known in the present) or the Hurons (as they were known in the past). 25 point bonus to whomever correctly names Dennison's 1st game opponent (road game) and his first home opponent. AT Delaware , Butler-home 50 point bonus for the same info for Larsen. At Wittenberg , Denison- HomeOn September 4. the campus atmosophere will be fantastic! Allow me to buy you one, dreal! Go Zips!!!DING-DING-DING!!! Winner winner, chicken dinner

  19. While we've all mostly been focusing on (and pleased with) the early play (and potential) of PN16, Zac Dysert actually garnered considerably more publicity in his freshmen season. Of course he saw a lot more playing time and threw a WHOLE lot more passes (Link). Besides the potential Keith-Nicely rivalry, the Dysert-Nicely rivalry also looks to offer a lot of MAC East excitement over the next few years.LinkEdit: MDZip, I plead guilty on the "stretch" charge. I'm just glad that someone acknowledged my meager attempt at obscure humor
  20. Yeah and thank god for Buffalo for knocking them out in the tourney, or else we're not MAC champs. That was certainly a fortunate circumstance. BUT, don't forget the Zips DID beat Can't last year at home. Granted it took a Brett McKightmare of a game, but it still happened. This game will come down to a very simple statistic in my view. If the Zips shoot the ball well (45% or better) they will win. If the percentage is below 40% they will lose. If it's in the range of 40-45%, it's a toss-up.
  21. The official announcement was made yesterday. I didn't realize that Fleming and Martin had coached together at ECU.Link
  22. Here is a Gaffney article, with him lamenting that these types of games are uncommon at the JAR and with an idea about modifying the seating to get more Rowdies together.Link
  23. K.E.N.T. was undoubtedly better than us athletically LAST year, too.
  24. While I called it a schedule before, I will add that there isn't a single game in which it would be completely shocking for the Zips to be competitive late in the game and/or even pull off the upset. It's been a while since you could say that heading into a season. I agree with Z.I.P. regarding the NIU game as being pivotal. I often find myself framing a Zip football schedule in terms of how it sets up the annual Wagon Wheel meeting. In the parlance of many current performance appraisal forms, I hereby define a "stretch goal" for the 2010 Zips heading out of the gate, consisting of the following.1) Win at least ONE of the three BCS games2) Do not get caught "Watching" Chauncey Gardiner's Web3) Win the Homecoming game versus NIUIf the stretch goal can be achieved, I think there's an excellent chance for a relatively quick turnaround in the football program, like many of us expect is possible with the current caliber of players.
  25. I saw this on CNNSI.com so I thought I would post it here. It's dated Feb 17, so GP1 beat this guy to the punch. While I'm not in favor of it (for selfish reasons as a Zip fan I suppose), I do understand that something like this makes a lot of sense and might not be avoidable down the road. I still say the biggest problem is determining who get into the "club".Link
