  1. This is a ball-busting schedule IMHO. I wish an easier opponent was scheduled for homecoming. I don't want to be 1-4 and headed to K.E.N.T.
  2. Of course, since I just had TWO friends move to the Philly area who BOTH have offered a place to stay for just such an occurence Oh well, the Owls are going to be even better next year, so that's the bright side :thumb:Edit: I should have waited ONE MINUTE! Looks like I might be in for a trip to the Liberty Bell after all
  3. I'm not disputing this story, but I wonder why it's taking K.E.N.T. so long to make an official announcement? So far there is no word of this on their sports site.
  4. As far as keeping or losing Will, I look at it this way. If Jim had landed a long way from here, one might think Will would naturally follow particularly if it was at an FCS school where he could transfer and play immediately. With his Dad still in the area, this might actually improve Will's chances of staying. If he indeed chooses to remain a Zip, it will be fun to think that we can partially thank K.E.N.T. because of it.
  5. And now for an alternative opinion This Zip football "family feud" has been one of my most entertaining football threads in a while. It's coincidental that you mention Al Bundy, who was of course played by Ed O'Neill. Some of you may realize that he is a Youngstown guy who played football at Ursuline and also later on at YSU. He even had a shot with the Steelers (Link). Since he played for YSU in the 60's, he certainly must have played against some of the Gordon Larson teams. Now we just need a "Dennison" guy and a "Larson" guy to join in "the feud". Link
  6. Eastern has defeated NIU 66-60. We need to keep playing well.
  7. Our bigs in foul trouble. We'll need Bardo to contribute some.EDIT: they're saying Bardo has a bad ankle. Swiech sighting today?
  8. They've shown Zip fans numerous times. And as already stated, you guys are doing a nice job with the volume!
  9. McLanahan for three to end the half!!!!
  10. Excellent defense this half by the Zips, from the first few minutes on.
  11. Nice! For those that couldn't see it, Nik followed Ronnie's attempted (missed) dunk on a run out. Nik was fouled on the follow and made the three point play.
  12. 15-14 Zips
  13. BG up 12-9 with 14 min remaining. Nik at the line
  14. You're correct about the Dayton game. Quite a few of them were students, even if it wasn't the majority. I should have confined my statement to MAC foes.
  15. I knew "Smurf Turf" would eventually spawn a few cousins.Link
  16. Regional broadcasting of college football HAD been introduced by then. I remember the Pioneer Bowl broadcast myself, being a HS senior at the time. The game was played at a time of year (second week in Dec?) that it may have gotten a national broadcast. I also seem to remember watching Akron play vs La Tech, and Terry Bradshaw in the Grantland Rice Bowl in 1967/68.I stand corrected once again. I'm ON FIRE today
  17. RI continuing to foster the good relationships with certain HS coaches.Link
  18. I don't think people are quite getting it that this game could matter a lot. It isn't quite what Zach stated but it is close. Here is the tiebreaking procedure:1. Head-to-head competition2. Winning percentage* vs. ranked conference teams (top to bottom, regardless of division; versus common opponents, regardless of the number of times played)3. Sport specific component (if applicable)4. Coin flip* Winning percentage is used instead of record because of situations where teams do not play each other the same number of times. Therefore, a team that is 1-0 (1.000) would win the tiebreaker over a team that is 1-1 (.500).So that means it doesn't matter who wins the West only what their record is. EMU is our kryptonite, if they finish ahead of Miami under any of the tiebreaker procedures and we tie Can't for the title at 12-4, Can't gets the number one seed. If Miami finishes in front of EMU, then its ours. So the best way to insure the #1 seed is to win both games. This one against BGSU absolutely matters. It only becomes meaningless if Miami wins and EMU loses, then we're in great shape, but we won't know that before the end of our game. Of course Miami is also playing Can't so that sets up some potentially bad possibilities as well. So those of you that think the BGSU game won't matter, it very well could.Nice work, MDZip. Here is Gaffney's article on it (link).Link
  19. I'm not sure if this equates to a cold, hard, fact, but in the 25+ years I've been following Zip hoops the "meager" turnout by True Blue still represents the largest presence of opposing students (K.E.N.T. games excluded) that I have personally witnessed. I also think that if that game would have been closer, we would have heard a LOT more of the contingent that did make the trip.I understand that they're the "enemy" and should be treated as such. But don't we want to see more of this? Wouldn't this dry, forlorn conference suddenly become a whole lot more fun if the showing by True Blue on Wednesday became the norm? I say we should encourage these undertakings.
  20. With the same "last name" you're probably just another helicopter parent already angling for playing time. Wasn't is just a few years ago that the Zips were recruiting a player by the name of Michael Michigan?
  21. It was on TV. I remember watching. I doubt there are any copies out there. The VCR had just been introduced the year before, most people did not have one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BetamaxI stand corrected. I suppose it was probably a local broadcast (Channel 23?)?
  22. I can't say for certain (was still in high school in the Pittsburgh area at the time), but I highly doubt the game was televised. This was before ESPN of course and ABC basically was the only network televising games in this period. There may have been some local broadcasts spread about the country, but these were few and far between even for the "name" programs. If I recall correctly, the MAC used to get one ABC "regional" slot per YEAR. I seem to remember watching a few Toledo-Central matchups in the late 70's to early 80's. I don't recall any football below the level of D-1 on TV until maybe 10-15 years ago.
  23. It all starts with talent. Miami had a ton of talent around the campus, they picked up the talent and put it to good use. Bernis Kosar had a lot to do with it as well. Bernie was a smart guy who could spread the field out and run a pro style offense. The story of the Cotton Bowl win against Texas was funny as well. They hated the city of Dallas, they hated the people of Texas and they set out to humiliate them on national TV....and they did. One Miami player told his teammates before the opening kickoff he was going to knock out the return man....and he did. Miami had 195 yards of penalties and still destroyed Texas. The interviews with Coach Johnson were great as well. He grew up dirt poor like a lot of the kids at Miami and they all related to each other. One guy said he coached with his middle finger in the air. College football seems so phony today compared to what it was then. The players hate each other, but they have to pretend they don't. The players are wildly excited when they do something good, but they can't celebrate.I liked it when they compared then President of UM Edward "Tad" Foote to this guy
  24. That 17% was for a single season.I thought the 17% number seemed strange. I know too many guys who graduated for it to be true.Once again, Faust reigns as the tallest midget. You guys have no idea how strange it is to type those words or even to take the thought serioiusly.Speaking of Faust, did anyone see the absolutely great 30-30 on ESPN about Miami FL football? It's amazing to me Faust actually coached on the same field against J. Johnson. That 30-30 was great in so many ways. Miami really changed college football in many good and bad ways.My favorite part was when the media complained about Miami destroying other teams and they never once complained when Oklahoma, Texas, Notre Dame were beating teams 50-0.I watched this program and I agree it was excellent. I have always used the U of Miami as the great example of how it is POSSIBLE for a college football program's fortunes to change dramatically over a relatively short time period. Before Howard became the coach, UM was no better (arguably worse) than San Diego State. They came REALLY close to simply dropping football, just like their in-state brothers at the University of Tampa (John Matuszak played there, the Spartans beat K.E.N.T. in the '72 Tangerine Bowl after their only MAC championship) did. While I enjoyed the point you mentioned (the double standard applied to the "urban" school), my favorite part was where it was claimed (hard to know how accurate this is) that the Miami Dolphins' players used to want to "hang" with the Hurricanes because the latter apparently had more "cred" in the local community.
  25. I applaud you all for making the trip. IMHO the UA-UB rivalry is a very good thing for the MAC. Beyond what's already been mentioned (good and bad) I'd like to give props for the "USA USA" chant as the retort to "Buffalo's in Canada". Nice timing with the Winter Olympics I hope to see more of you at the Q for one huge MAC hoops party.
