The last word on Lee Owens vs. JD Brookhart
johnnyzip84 replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Football
That 17% was for a single season.I thought the 17% number seemed strange. I know too many guys who graduated for it to be true.Once again, Faust reigns as the tallest midget. You guys have no idea how strange it is to type those words or even to take the thought serioiusly.Speaking of Faust, did anyone see the absolutely great 30-30 on ESPN about Miami FL football? It's amazing to me Faust actually coached on the same field against J. Johnson. That 30-30 was great in so many ways. Miami really changed college football in many good and bad ways.My favorite part was when the media complained about Miami destroying other teams and they never once complained when Oklahoma, Texas, Notre Dame were beating teams 50-0.I watched this program and I agree it was excellent. I have always used the U of Miami as the great example of how it is POSSIBLE for a college football program's fortunes to change dramatically over a relatively short time period. Before Howard became the coach, UM was no better (arguably worse) than San Diego State. They came REALLY close to simply dropping football, just like their in-state brothers at the University of Tampa (John Matuszak played there, the Spartans beat K.E.N.T. in the '72 Tangerine Bowl after their only MAC championship) did. While I enjoyed the point you mentioned (the double standard applied to the "urban" school), my favorite part was where it was claimed (hard to know how accurate this is) that the Miami Dolphins' players used to want to "hang" with the Hurricanes because the latter apparently had more "cred" in the local community. -
I applaud you all for making the trip. IMHO the UA-UB rivalry is a very good thing for the MAC. Beyond what's already been mentioned (good and bad) I'd like to give props for the "USA USA" chant as the retort to "Buffalo's in Canada". Nice timing with the Winter Olympics I hope to see more of you at the Q for one huge MAC hoops party.

Smart move on his part. As an aside, this position is a great fit for him. The Coastal program would probably have continued to rise anyway, but I look for big (relatively) things out of them in the coming years.

Would that be the game that Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres shut down Canada? So who from the Akron NHL club was there? I think they forget we hate Canada more then they do. We actually have a reason to hate them when all of there dumb fans come to HSBC arena. That game meant way more to us in Buffalo, then them in Akron. I forgot we have pro teams though, so thats kind of cool. After all your a third rate school in Ohio, Man I would hate to have Ohio State in my backyard almost. Luckily we are the best NY football now :-)As bad as the 'Cuse has been, you still haven't whipped them. The Zips, on the other hand, have

So does Akron.I tried to find the thread on here, but I couldn't come up with any unique qualifiers from the lyrics. So here is the gender-neutral version we came up with a while back.DRINK BEER!DRINK BEER!DRINK BEER G-- D---DRINK BEER!I WON'T DRINK BEER WITH ANY FANWHO WON'T DRINK BEER WITH AN AKRON FANAKRON ONCEAKRON TWICEHOLY JUMPIN' J---- C-----G-- D---SON OF A B----G-OOOOOOOOOO ZIPS!!!I was thinking more along the lines of something that could be a bit more official and main stream. something with an english tavern melody that the band wouldn't get in deep $hit for playing in the stands and that the rowdy's and other fans could sing to at a gameI like your idea. We could be like English football hooligans in "full voice". You're correct in that the "song" I posted is really more of a monotone "chant". -
Mike Rasor or Tom Gaffney, do you guys check in here?

So should we keep checking ohio.com every hour? Can you at least comment on whether it's good, bad, or neutral news? -

Great Chase Blackburn Article
johnnyzip84 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Yeah, but you should have included the whole quote:Blackburn: "Definitely - I still am. I'm a normal fan when I watch football. I wish I would have been able to go to Ohio State, but things worked out the way they did going to Akron, which I have no complaints about. It was a great school and a great fit for me. Who knows what would have happened if I went to Ohio State?"That puts it in a much different light - plus the guy grew up right outside of Columbus. This is the quote that really confused me:Q: How did you end up at Akron?Blackburn: "I got recruited by a lot of MAC schools. I got offered a couple of scholarships from MAC schools. I went to Akron for a visit and it was a good time. They showed me around the campus and they had won the MAC championship the year before ...I agree. This stuck out like a sore thumb. I seem to recall one year where the Zips technically tied for the MAC East, but Marshall (I think) won the tie-breaker? Maybe this is what LO's recruiters we're touting? -
Especially since Miami is the only team who has yet to lose a home game in conference, I'll have my fingers crossed but I have a bad feeling about this one:Miami 55Zips 52I will be more than happy to eat crow.Munch, munch, munch, tastes good and happy to do it. This crow is mighty tasty! My mistake was not realizing that Fuller didn't have any more years of eligibility left......and that he didn't play hoops to begin with......other than that, my pre-game logic was sound. Now how about a march on Richmond! Go Zips!!
-
Playing Marshall makes perfect sense for the Zips at this stage. I still remember how derisive their fans were regarding Zip football. I hope they still bring their masses to see how much different things are at UA these days. I don't think we'll be hearing or seeing I-AA references afterwards. Besides....I still get such a kick out of calling them the Blundering Terd.

With the Zips up by 1 and only a few seconds remaining, one of the Redhawks will take the inbounds at about 3/4 court, turn and heave a desperation pass that seemingly travels 70 yards in the air. A Zip defender will correctly judge the trajectory of the ball, deftly placing his body in the exact spot where it lands. Unfortunately, just as he raises his arms to catch the descending object, it morphs into an oblique spheroid, careening off of his hands to MU's Kenny Hayes just behind him. Hayes lays it up and in for the horrifying win. Simultaneously far across the globe, a large bell chimes at the top of a grandiose palace.

Eugene Jarvis Gets a 6th Year

Extortion works! -
That is the difference, in the first half he was taken out in the 12:19 mark and put back in at 11:26. During that time, McNees hit a 3 pointer, which would have put him at -3 (where he would be if he were in the entire game, since the Zips won by 3).Thanks! Great job!

Introducing a ZN.O Stats Blog, with +/- and Help Value. Any suggestions/comments are appreciated!Man, THANK YOU for taking the time and effort to investigate and develop this. I do have a question though. I am curious as to how Cooper ended up with a +/- of zero when he played the entire game and his team lost by 3?EDIT: Razor's blog said he played the whole game, but the ESPN box score only had him with 49 minutes played. Maybe it has something to do with that.

The last time I talked to one of the owners, they were disappointed with how slow work was going in that building across from Canal Park. I would say there's not a great chance of them opening a pub there anytime soon. I think they're looking at alternate locations. I believe their 1st order of business is to get the brewery up and going again on Selle St. I had heard March at one time for this, but I'll bet it'll be closer to late spring/early summer if it happens. I really hope they can do it, but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.

Haven't tried it yet, but it's on the "to-do" list. Never got the opportunity to get some "real" BBQ while I was in NC for the College Cup.Old Carolina is very good IMHO. I think they had plans at one time to put a place in pretty close to the Info. I'm not sure what became of that.I'll put in a plug for Metro Burger over in Highland Square.....VERY tasty.Metro Burger Web SiteIf OBC ever gets their act together, they MAY have bottling capability (on Selle St, downtown) come football season. Also, Thirsty Dog is another decent Akron brew. Neither one is quite in the Hoppin' Frog category, but then again neither is their price. Thirsty Dog is available at many Giant Eagles.Edit: Sorry, Zippy4PREZ....didn't see your post until now

While I would never take this info to the bank, the latest FootballScoop info has a few interesting Akron ties. Apparently Reno Ferri was up for the Ohio U TE coach/recruiting coordinator before some guy from WVU got the job. The weird twist was that there was another candidate for the job....none other than Chris Hedden, the former Toledo assistant who JD hired to take Reno's spot last year (scroll a little ways down the page to Monday, Feb 8). Since the position was for recruiting coordinator as well, I'm guessing Frank Solich must have been satisfied that Reno's "transgression" last year was minor indeed Also Gardner-Webb, no doubt beginning to lay down the plans for a massively spectacular ambush at the Info, hired a Memphis grad assistant.LinkI still haven't heard any new rumors on JD or Fleming.

You can view ZN without logging on.I think that should be changed. Lurkers might be more inclined to share their opinions if they had to be logged in. I know there are some people who don't want us to know they're looking, but there is a hidden user option that nobody seems to take advantage of.Of course, that's just my opinion. You're allowed to disagree, and let me know it. OR place you on double secret probation.

Thanks fo the heads up In looking at Syracuse's schedule, I see that they are currently slated to play 5 teams with golden helmets (UA, Washington, USF, Pitt and BC) with one opponent still TBA. Of course, USF could always throw a monkey wrench into this diabolical scheme by choosing to play in one of their optional (green or white I believe) helmets. I know, I know......aside from hoops this is a slow time of the year.
-
Then let's hope our dear friend Charlie doesn't decide to press them in the 2nd half.

I'm not sure why it took this long for me to recognize this, but the statistics available on these Pomeroy sites are absolutely mind boggling. I realize it's no doubt automated to some degree, but somebody, somewhere is still doing a lot of work keeping this database up to date. Wow.
