At least Humpty can be seen on the bench and the suspension is only supposed to be for one game.

OK, I'll take a shot at this. I see some merit in these proposals. While the idea of a super conference might be the best approach to address some issues such as athletic department deficits, perceived exploitation of student athletes and national championship controversy, I think there are some concerns with this approach.I believe the quality of college football programs has always been spread out along more of a continuum than the "haves vs. have-nots" scenario often depicted. There just happens to be a very large spread between, for instance, the SEC and the MAC since they more or less represent different ends of the spectrum within the whole of the FBS. I think this makes the selection of an initial top 40 very difficult. Being left out (and I can think of quite a few deserving teams you left off your list.....Oregon St, Oklahoma St, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Arizona St, etc.) of the initial selection could be critical to a program.NOW IF the plan were to include a "promotion/relegation" system similar to European soccer, this might mitigate the damage done to deserving teams having not mad the first "cut". And it would also reward "play on the field" to provide a vehicle for the Boise St's of the world to make their ascent up the ranks. Of course, this provision would only work with GP's formation of another one (or two) more divisions. Maybe the top 4 in the lower division could get promoted and the bottom 4 in the super division be relegated at the end of every season. If you throw this in, I might be willing back such an idea. We're both ignoring a powerful lobbying group however......the Bowls. I'd be willing to let them die or become part of the D1/D2/D3/D4/D5/D6 playoff structure. But will they?

Why would you ask such a question? Because he wants RI to change the position of a FR All-American linebacker?

I heartily concur on this one GP1. While JD's masterpiece (no, I don't mean the 2005 MAC championship this time around) was considered to be blatantly obscene by some when it was first released, I agree that CITR captures the essence of male teenage angst, uncertainty, confusion and self-doubt about as well as any book written before or since. In fact, I re-read the book not long ago, just to reacquaint myself with it as my own boys were entering early adulthood. The lingo might drive some of the younger people crazy for a little while, but that shouldn't detract from the story too much if you stay with it.

Thanks for the UT inside scoop! Best of luck in getting the Boise St scheduling issue resolved without too much difficulty for the Rockets or the rest of the MAC. Also even though we probably won't know the conference schedule for a while (keeping in mind we haven't played Miami the last two seaons), let's BOTH hope for resounding victories over BUGS in 2010

Typical MAC Scheduling Difficulties

May I quote Becker and Fagen on this one?"California tumbles into the seaThat'll be the day I go back to Annandale".......Annandale, Annadale......close enough -

Toledo is being asked to move their game with Boise St next year to accommodate the Broncos desire to open with Va Tech at Landover, MD. While MDZip might enjoy this opportunity to see a potentially exciting college football opener, it appears as if other MAC games MAY have to be rearranged in order for this to occur. At this rate, maybe we'll see a 2010 schedule by summer camp ESPN Link

ZIPS GET TWO NEW VERBALS
johnnyzip84 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Blake is a JUCO transfer from Nassau Community College. When I lived in the dorms several eons ago I had a buddy on the Zips who was also a transfer from this same school. One thing that seems to be evident early on. The staff is drawing recruits from a wide ranging geographic area. -
It IS sort of interesting that he also has an offer from Notre Dame...........................College that is

A place for this years team in the record books
johnnyzip84 replied to MDZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
According to MAC-Sports site, the record holder for blocked shots in the MAC all-time is Same Pellom(1974-1978) from Buffalo with 375 blocked shots...WOW...that's pretty impressive. It's a big number, but I have no idea why this would count towards a MAC record since it occurred over 15 years before U@B was admitted into the MAC. Also, I believe the Bulls were D-III during this time. Are the exploits of the Wyatt Webb teams here at UA (etc.) eligible for places in the all-time MAC record books? -
Recruiting updates from me will be sparse. There's a whole new group of coaches...and I have no way to meet them until signing day. Or maybe the summer golf outing.Sucks. This used to be my favorite time of year.A 3 star running back that is committed to NIU visited Akron this weekend and could very well switch his commitment to the Zips. His last name is Bowers.Scout Link

What do Zips Fans Really think?
johnnyzip84 replied to MDZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
It's an excellent hypothetical question I'd really have a hard time choosing. In the end, here is my preference.1) Low-Level Bowl win - maybe because the suffering has been so great, so recent, and nearly so constant. The brief taste in 2005 still lingers.2) NCAA Soccer championship - In the last 20 years, I have gradually become a big fan of soccer at all levels. I thoroughly enjoy not only the Zips results on the pitch, but HOW they accomplish them.3) Hoops 1st round NCAA tourney win - It's such a close call that it seems ridiculous to find this in third place. I guess if you make it a SECOND round win, this probably shoots to number 1 in my list. There's a LOT more program credibility gained from a 2nd round win as opposed to a "fluke" (in some of the public eyes) win in the opening round by a "Cinderella story". -
I hated yesterday's outcome as much as anyone. It's disappointing to think that the program, at least for this season, probably will not become THE dominant team in this weak conference. That distinction may have to wait, from the looks of things. That's not to say that the Zips can't or won't win in Cleveland again this year. But I do agree that there is plenty of concern over how this year's team is playing on the road in the MAC. The win at OU was gritty, but far from awe inspiring. The upcoming game at Western will MOST LIKELY find the Zips at 3-3, with the weaker part of the schedule ahead of them. The GOOD thing about this, is that there remains plenty of time for the maturing process to take place. This team needs to play much tougher mentally and physically down the stretch. An example is Jimmy Conyers technical foul early in the game. This isn't to take anything away from how JC has played this year. He's been outstanding. Still, he needs to learn that when a K.E.N.T. weenie deliberately does something to get under his skin he needs to ignore it. This team needs JC's strength on the floor too much to be giving away playing time. You can bet that every other MAC team is going to take notice of this and try to disrupt Jimmy in future games. He needs to make them pay with his play on the court alone. Now go out and prove me wrong by bucking the Broncos in Kalamazoo! Go Zips!!!

One thing's for sure. Dwight never got picked on at Akron like he's getting picked on by Peyton today!

You are a veritable ray of sunshine, meister. While humorous, the meister actually left himself wide open for a counterpoint.Let's go with a "max weight" 2009 Zip d-line for argument's sake....say Harvey, Bain, and Sewell --> total weight 290 + 290 + 280 = 860 LBfAssume a "min weight" d-line for 2010, as in the 4 lightest DL's..... Odofin, Shead, Homayed, Hazime --> total weight 230 + 240 + 235 + 255 = 960 LBf960 > 860Conclusion: Until there are no FBS teams left running either a 3-3-5 or a 3-4, the Zips will most likely not have the smallest defensive line in the country.Q.E.D. While a good attempt at counterpointing the Meister, Johny has not carried his argument to its logical conclusion.... and left himself open for a vicious backatya. To wit, lets put all 11 guys on the dline and have the heaviest line in FBS!It's not total weight that makes us the lightest dline in FBS, it's AVERAGE weight. (regarding your hypothetical heavy 3-man line: Question - what's the difference between Bain and a 290 pound hunk of concrete? Answer - the hunk of concrete has greater mobility). We may have to put a couple of guys on a diet to maintain the title of smallest FBS dline, however, because if the members of the dline for Army maintain their current weight and place on the depth chart, they will AVERAGE 261 pounds. If only we'd revert to the 3-3-5, we'd have West Point all up in arms!!!

I wonder if Matt could become the cliche "Wesley Welker" type slot back, assuming another backup QB can be found. He might not be the deep threat GP1 is looking for in Arizona, but he could do some damage in the capacity (more than Jeremy Bruce IMHO).I don't know if the coaches would want to risk that. We only have 2 QB's. Do you really want your backup QB playing another position? That means not only is he getting less practice reps, but also has a higher risk of injury. It would make coach look bad if Rogers got hurt playing another position and then Nicely went down. Rogers is a good runner for a QB. I think we can have better options in the wildcat. We only have 2 QBs with game experience (not including Wackerly's 4 of 5 in garbage time). Does this necessarily mean we'll only have 2 QBs come the start of the season? Who know how good Potts might be (or someone else the new staff might bring in)? If Matt ends up being the only reasonable choice at backup, then I agree the coaches shouldn't risk anything by switching him.

It seems like ECU was turned down by quite a few coaches (Golden, Stockstill, possibly Clawson and a few others). With Sonny Dykes now at La Tech apparently the dominoes have stopped falling for this off-season.

regardless of who is carrying the rock, coach I needs to eliminate the damned shotgun draw/too slow to develop inside running scheme. That never had a chance of working. Line up and smash it down their throats.ianello i believe has already said he won't be running the spread..so he nneds to find 2 dependable rbs and an fb...not to mention a tight end...IF martin was healthy he would be the #1 but his knee will probably not allow thatits a crap shoot until the season starts and one of these guys steps up..or not...Martin had better cure his fumble-itis if he wants to see the ball more. His average per carry was impressive, but he coughed it up at key times as well.

That's really strange. I almost re-posted the football scoop link this morning because it clearly said (at that time) Luke was returning to Pitt as a grad assistant. I see now where the wording has been changed from Pitt to Akron.Link

Zips will come out cold, and the Sweaters' grind-it-out style will compound things. But the Zips will right the ship behind a burst from Humpty to tie the game at the half. UA's depth eventually provides the difference.Zips 55Sweaters 51
