  1. Ahhh, now I understand. Thanks Dr Z! Hey, let's not forget good ol' Terry Bowden, who also coached under Faust briefly.
  2. I thought Bill Cubit was the HC at Western?
  3. I think it's a little unfair to pick on #19. He's been playing hurt the last half of the year and he still hits as hard as anyone!
  4. AGREED Bleacher Bum!!!! Bust the Red and Silver!!!
  5. One of the worst thoughts for me is the sinking feeling that, over time, we will all realize that the Zips REALLY missed a golden opportunity in 2006 for two big reasons. Both BGSU and Miami were down this year! If MAC FB history is any kind of barometer of future success, we all know that they both will be back in much better form, probably very soon. Hopefully we'll see a few key coaching changes with the assistants after this season.
  6. USA Today put out an interesting "database" a few days ago that lists all of the NCAA D1 head coaches total compensation (at least the ones who work for a public university). This is very intriguing, particularly some of the MAC HC salaries.USA Today D1 HC Salaries
  7. I agree there were a few bad calls that went against the Zips, but I don't think it was enough to blame on the loss. If you can't run the ball or defend the run, you're not going to win many games. That's even if your special teams don't screw things up. Add that into the equation, and you won't win ANY.What in the world happened to the team that was pretty effective in both rushing and rush defense against PSU and NC St? Ever since the CMU "gift", the Zips have had the wind taken out of their sails it seems. If you think about it, aside from the CMU game, the Zips really weren't even competetive in all of our MAC road contests. That's very disheartening heading into the off season.
  8. OK, now that I've got the latest whether forecast, I can do a little forecasting of my own.Zips 20Bobcats 23Obviously I'm going with my head and not my heart. I just have a feeling that special teams will do us in. I hope I'm wrong.
  9. Then this probably wouldn't be a good time to mention that, having Massillon Cable, I have the good fortune of receiving ESPNU as part of the standard, digital package Go Zips!!!!
  10. Sergeant and Rowdy, I also saw the mistake on Akron's record. How does the ESPN network let something like that slip? I also thought that there should have at least been some discussion from the crew about Montgomery's lack of clock management during BG's final drive. Sure it worked out in the end, but I thought that using a timeout earlier to save a little time in case BG made the FG was questionable, or at least deserved some discussion (I think it was more the field conditions than any "ice job" that caused the FG to be missed). But, of course, the goofs were too busy drumming with their fingers and laughing hysterically at themselves. One positive is that MAC fans like us can at least watch a few games like this. Hopefully, ESPN won't find anything better for at least a few years.
  11. I know the weather could be a factor, but how about this for an offensive gameplan. I say we put Getsy in the situation where he has proven to be the most comfortable. Let's go no-huddle, 2-minute drill right from the start to try to dictate the pace against the Bobcat D. Normally I would like to see Kennedy being featured early, but versus what is probably the MAC's best defense, I think we need to do something other than just line up and see who has the best line play. Getsy has shown to be superb in this role in the past, and I frankly have been a little disappointed not to see this tactic used more often this year. I think Kennedy could still get yardage using this approach, but it would be more like establishing the pass to set up the run. I realize it's a gamble, in that if it does not work right away the Zips could be down big early. But I think it's worth the risk to try to "steal" this one. Any thoughts?
  12. As much as I've enjoyed the RedSquawks misery this year, there is no way I can be convinced that there are only 3 D1-A teams worse than them at this point. True, the 1-10 record speaks for itself, but a lot of those losses were against pretty good teams.Go Zips!!!!! Beat OU!!!!
  13. Hey, thanks for the tip AK! Looks like I have a stocking stuffer, coming my way.
  14. I’m sure a number of you have probably noticed the recent FATHEAD commercial for removable collegiate décor in which Zippy is briefly seen battling Brutus the Buckeye on the sidelines (must have been during the 2002 game when Charlie was a sophomore). Most of the other schools referenced in the ad are from the so-called power conferences, so I thought it was nice for the University and the athletic program to get what I figure is a nice piece of “free” publicity. This got me to thinking about other sources of free Zip publicity over the years. I recall being able to see a blue and gold Akron pennant from certain angles in Arnold’s, the famous hangout for Richie, the Fonz and others on Happy Days. Does anyone else have any recollection of this and/or other Zip TV references (outside of actual sports broadcasts, of course)?
  15. The actual crowd was definitely the smallest of the season, but still it was a far cry from a few Buffalo visits I can recall from the past. Other than the Roo Zoo it wasn't particularly vocal either, but the thing I notice lately is that more people actually pay attention to the game and that is a very good sign as what we all hope to be a more successful program begins to take shape.Getsy was superb, albeit against a weaker defense. Still it was fun to watch him and the receivers in tune, especially when it counted. Watching CJ was fun as well, though I wished we would have seen a few more QB keeps other than the QB draw. The lefty has plenty of arm strength, as evidenced by the ball thrown to Lindsay that drew the interference penalty. All in all, the game was a success, but the Zips will have to raise it a notch or two over the next two weeks for sure.
  16. I am taking the "cop-out" approach by making a qualified prediction. I do this based on the difficulty the Zippers have had in stopping the run lately. OK here goes.Scenario 1: Starks gets > 100 yards rushingBuffalo 30 Akron 27 (Zips miss 1 extra point, Bulls win it late on 3rd FG of game) Scenario 2: Starks gets < 100 yards rushingAkron 33 Buffalo 17 (Zips miss 2 extra points, but Bulls turnovers kill them)
  17. Nobody would welcome a blowout more than me. But I have a really hard time predicting one, since the closest thing we've seen to one was the North Texas game and even that one had a few shaky moments in the 2nd half. I hope I'm wrong
  18. I agree that 17 points seems too high, in fact I think considerably too high. This time of year is always interesting. When a down-trodden program likes Buffalo gets a glimpse of success late in the season, it's not hard for that little bit of momentum to catch hold and carry the team to better performances for the duration of the schedule. I particularly expect the Bulls to come out sky high, with big hits on special teams etc. They have nothing at all to lose and are probably getting excited about possibly turning the corner with 1st year coach Turner Gill. The Zips will need to match that intensity, in my opinion, or it could be a frustratingly close win at the least, or a very disappointing loss at the most. It's hard for me NOT to believe that the Zip seniors won't put forth their best effort. I just hope this is enough.
  19. GP1, could you be contradicting yourself a little when you say that JD would be better off leaving now for a coordinator spot, when you already mentioned that Rick Minter is doing a nice job as a "big time" DC after his less-than-stellar HC stint at Cincy? I think JD could still find an OC spot, even if things don't work out too well during the rest of his stay here, based on his overall body of work.
  20. I agree with the general sentiment that we should start looking ahead to the future, not just with CJ but anywhere else that makes sense during the remaining games on the slate. I am usually an optimist, so I hesitate even saying what I am about to say. BUT this seems to be the best place for Zip fans to vent SO....instead of "cool hand Luke", I'm thinking that "Fluke" Getsy is perhaps more appropriate.
  21. Anytime there is speculation about a school hiring a new coach, it is inevitable that all of the alums who are in the profession receive considerable attention. The first thing I said to myself after watching the NC State game was, it looks like we'll be looking for a new coach after this year. Now that things haven't exactly gone according to plan since then, I took it as the cloud's silver lining that he would have to stay for at least one more year. I still believe that. How can anyone POSSIBLY argue that that program is not in better shape now than when he got here. I'm not saying there isn't always room for improvement, but let's be fair.
  22. Excellent scoop! Eric was definitely one of my favorites from the Huggins era, although I feel much older now thanks to this I kind of lost track, but didn't he get into coaching for a while?
  23. He played the entire 4th quarter against EMU and the Rockets scored on 2 of the 3 drives he lead. I didn't see anything about him getting reinjured.http://utrockets.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/.../102306aaa.html
  24. Like you said, it all starts with the Toledo game. I think UT will play much better than it has recently with Nick Cochran back as the starting QB. He's from the Akron area (Wadsworth, I believe) and would like nothing better than to shine against the Zips. At the beginning of the year, he was putting up pretty good numbers against quality opposition. Let hope the Zips can play well in all phases and bring the victory (1st ever in the Glass Bowl?) home.
