I don't think you are giving nearly enough respect for the job that Winters has done since taking over the Wayne St. program. The GLIAC is always one of the top Div 2 conferences in the country, but the Wayne St. program has long been mired at the bottom of this league. Winters has not only turned the program around (GLIAC coach of the year in 2007), but he's done it much earlier than people would have expected. You can hold all the grudges you like against him for his Zip "O" not coming through when it counted, but I will say this. Paul Winters WILL be the HC at a higher profile school soon enough, and I believe he's got a good chance of being successful. Who knows, he may turn up in the MAC someday.Oh and for those of you who might be saying, "what in the world is the GLIAC?", look no further than Brian Kelly's tenure at Grand Valley St. to see the type of football that is played there.

I’ve long contended that, if Jake Schifino holds on to a sure 1st down throw from Butchie on 3rd down out pattern not far from mid-field, the Zips might well have won their first MAC championship 5 years earlier. It’s very hard for me to figure why Owens’ teams do not get adequate credit for the balanced, efficient offense that they generally showed, against all levels of competition. It is true that the TEAM never seemed to be able to win the big one, but most if not all of that falls to the defense of those days. So, in the end, Owens’ takes the hit since he was the head of the team. Nevertheless, I’ve always been, and continue to be, impressed by the offensive coaching abilities of guys like Paul Winters and Tom Stacy. You only need to look at how well these guys have done since Akron let them go to find evidence to support me on this.

We need new English teachers at UoA
johnnyzip84 replied to a-zip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
a-zipYou found one more than I did! But, then again, you missed my entire post on the Harvey thread. Let's call it even! -
While I agree that properly written English is something that goes underappreciated these days, I also think that this type of forum should be informal enough to allow people to focus on the ideas that are being discussed and not necessarily so much on how they are being described. There's my contribution to the barrage of run on sentences. I also could help but notice a few things. "Beleive" should be believe (i before e, except after c...lol), "grammer" should be grammar and there is a typo in anyone. I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm just a smart-ass engineer

UT (Scooter) Point Shaving Charges Dropped?
johnnyzip84 replied to rocketfootball's topic in Akron Zips Football
Thanks for the update, rocketfootball. This is the kind of situation for which we all need to be fearful. I've often wondered whether the criminal types who initiate these schemes might look at the MAC (or WAC or Sunbelt, etc.) as "special opportunities" in that they might feel as though they can sort of fly under the radar with these schools, so to speak. I suppose as long as Vegas and others have lines on our games, betting irregularites should become obvious to all observers, whether they are operating in the public's best interest or not. -
I tend to agree with z-p on this one. I was also disappointed about the way he acted like he didn't even want to "go there" regarding the new stadium. I realize that he doesn't want to look like he's comitting to a date, because he probably can't at this time. But what's wrong with discussing possibilities?

This was the one thing I expected to see a whole lot of last year (based on observations in the MAC championship and Motor City Bowl) and I was very disappointed that I didn't (at least not much). IMO Getsy's one absolute strength is running the no-huddle. Well at least we might see it this year. Better late than never?

To quote Bill Murray in "Stripes" (to Sgt. Hulka),"You old dog!!!"Luigi's.....a TRUE Akron landmark, worthy of its praise.

Hey The Hip Zip,Was it you that I heard on WNIR this morning? Either way, it was nice to hear a Zip supporter during an otherwise (typically) mundane time of the day Frenchie seemed to think the crowd was at least in the 650-700 range from his comments today.

They Stole Our Logo and Colors

Imitation.....the most sincere form of flattery :DIt's also a nice twist that a different CANTON is involved with the heist! -
Maybe we can infuse a little "snow-capped" look using large sections of paper mache on top of the Airdock!

JT the Brick rips on Miami Redhawks, MAC
johnnyzip84 replied to scottditzen's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Malone is not even an NCAA institution. They are in the NAIA along with Walsh. Since they give some scholoarship money nased on athletics, they're probably closer to an NCAA D-2 school than NCAA D-3.A HUGE part of the NCAA tourney charm (although I'm sticking to my boycott this year so far!) is the "David vs. Goliath" scripts oftne seen in the early round games. If you take that away, I think the popularity goes way down. -
26 wins13 home wins4 straight wins over Can't3 ncaa tourny teams we beat2 Mac award winning playersGetting Screwed by the NCAA/NIT Selection Committee...GUTLESS!!

Upon reflection, Eastern will be the only "sorry" team in the West next year, so drawing Western and Central isn't so bad. Thanks for straightening me out, Johnnyzip!BTW.....I look for Ball St. to be the surprise team of the MAC next year.

The Army game in Cleveland doesn't bother me. Drawing Western and Central from the West does.

A hearty welcome to you Steve, from a fellow Western Pennsylvanian (originally)! Take it from me, the people from Akron will be good to you, aside from a few snide remarks about y'ins having an accent n'at Just jaggin' with ya Seriously, we're very happy to have you here.Go Zips!!!

It's by far my favorite sport and college is my favorite version. I just can't see helping to feed the mouth that puked all over us. OK, sick analogy aside, TV (ESPN/CBS) can kiss my butt. This is the REAL reason behind the snub.
-
There is ONE thing I can do about this whole mess. Sure, it will be purely meaningless to anyone but me. And you might say I'm cutting my nose off to spite my face. That's OK, I canlive with that. For 2007, I will not watch ANY NCAA or NIT tournament games (men's of women's) on TV. So what if I'm like the proverbial mouse giving the cat the bird prior his untimely demise.

Oddly enough, I have seen the two Pollitz kids play in high school, but for some reason I didn't put 2 and 2 together until watching the 1st game last night. 3 years ago, our local HS team (Northwest) played Ottawa-Glandorph (sp?) for the Div 2 state championship. OG won easily and it was Eric, who looked like the better HS player to me at the time, that did most of the damage. Tim's larger body obviously has him better suited for the college game. It's strange that another team that I am root for will now face those twins AGAIN in a champioship game. I just hope this outcome is MUCH better than the last

Akron-Central Michigan: Game Predictions
johnnyzip84 replied to sgm405's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Central gets off to a quick start and leads most of the 1st half, with a late UA run tieing the game at halftime, 32-32. Zips gradually pull away in the second half, keyed by at least one Quade Quake! Zips 75Chips 631st step in the way towards -
Horizon League Championship
johnnyzip84 replied to Balki Bartokomous's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I believe that Wright St. and Butler had the same conf records and they split the regular season, so I have to think that Wright St. had the tie-breaker somehow, because they were the #1 seed.I agree that Butler doesn't belong in the top 25. They appear to be fading, with all of those "quality" wins coming very early in the schedule. But, I'm sure they'll still get a bid. I think the Zips could definitely compete with them. -
MAC Report Online Announces Year-End Awards
johnnyzip84 replied to MACReport's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Agree 100%. I'll bet KD would even agree that Christian is deserving. KD's said a number of times that he doesn't know how Can't is able to hold onto him. -
I grew up in PGH. The TV series Hill St. Blues was inspired by the "Hill District" right around the corner from Duquesne.
-
I'll second that!
