  1. I also agree with Dr Z and I'll add another description (one word): Poise Sure this is a highlight reel and it omits the mistakes I'm sure he's made. But considering that these are JUNIOR (and before) highlights, I think he shows as much poise (or more) than I've seen in any other QB video I've seen on this web site over the last few years.
  2. While I agree the committee would likely have left TCU behind, I also think a few obvious snubs once this 4-team playoff is in place will rally support for an 8-team playoff sooner than later. Many pundits agree this is the next step.
  3. Beacon Journal article on his latest role For those that don't know, James was a pretty good running back in the early/mid 80's. In addiiton, he always seemed to win the "Mr Universe" contests on campus.
  4. Nice job, George! You're 2 for 2 with the 2013 commits It says something about the reputation of the staff that they got him to commit BEFORE coming to campus
  5. Beacon says UA and City of Akron to meet with USFL officials. The truly bizarre part in this story is the notion that the Rubber Bowl is being considered as the venue. Very strange.
  6. Reggie Corner signs with Jags.
  7. A couple of thoughts come to mind: 1) TB's quick read, fast paced offense SHOULD result in fewer sacks this year, regardless of the QB. The line simply doesn't have to hold their blocks as long. So I'm not nearly as concerned of the QB getting "killed" as I was the last two years. This should not be a consideration for whether to play Pohl or not. 2) I completely agree with the sentiment that if Dalton gives us a better chance to start the season off on a more positive note, you have to play him. Having said that, the Zips could easily play relatively well in the first four games and still be 1-3 heading into MAC play. Even if that's the case, I still think playing the QB who is better prepared is still the correct move. The biggest thing TB is trying to do early in the season is get these guys to BELIEVE they can compete. If the team starts to rally around itself, regardless of the record, the situation Pohl may be required to step into will be far more fruitful.
  8. +1 I've got a cold Bell's Cherry Stout in my fridge for your well deserved August 30th reward
  9. Big 10 and Ivy League to jointly study concussions
  10. I'm fine with whatever makes sense to the mods. It's nice to see the Bowden name still has pull in western Pa.
  11. DB Zach Guiser He's from Greensburg Central Catholic just east of Pittsburgh. I've been waiting for that 1st commit to hopefully get the momentum going.
  12. Kudos to the mystery man. I'm still shocked his predicted spread wasn't 14.
  13. Shame on you, Zipmeister Long live "the Beta"!
  14. I watched a little bit of the game, but I didn't notice either Zip recruit in particular. Admittedly, I only saw the 4th quarter and Ohio had the ball for much of this time. The player I did notice was QB/LB Adam Wallace from Norwayne's state champs, who we've discussed a while back in this thread. He was very instrumental in the Ohio comeback win. Granted since he played the "wildcat" QB position for Ohio, he probably isn't a good fit in Coach Bowden's offense. However, he made a key play at the end of the game at LB, tipping a ball thrown down field so that a teammate could intercept it in OT and sealing the win. I think the MAC schools will wish they had offered him after his career at Ashland. Of course, he wouldn't be the first transfer from Ashland to Akron if things were happen to fall that way down the road.
  15. I thought that was pretty funny as well. If I was a "borderline" (ouch) NFL prospect, I think I'd make sure to have a passport in case plan A falls through
  16. Edmonton can't seem to get enough Zips.
  17. I guess I sort of forgot that Hazime was granted his release as well. Apparently he's now a grad student at Wake Forest. I wish Hasan all the best, as I think he might help out the Deacons assuming he's fully back from his injury. GP1 can provide commentary throughout the season
  18. I decided it's never too early to start thinking about the opener, especially since it's the 1st game in the much-anticipated tenure of Coach Terry Bowden at UA. In order to start things off, the UCF campus newspaper offers an early look at the contest (my word, probably not theirs ). Not that this is unexpected based on recent history, but I hope this attitude permiates the entire UCF program.
  19. Good insight, Keener. I’m glad the day worked out as well as possible for you. But are you sure that lump in your throat wasn’t just the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale talking back to you? You mention a recurring theme in “off-the-record” discussions with Coach Bowden. Publicly he likes to play it safe with statements like “2 wins would be an improvement”, but this is the 3rd or 4th time (by my recollection) he has privately emphasized “winning one of those games you’re not supposed to” early in the season. I believe that, in his gut, he thinks the Zips have a shot to do exactly that. So that leads me to ponder which game might “fall the Zips’ way”. You figure Tennessee is out of play and Morgan St doesn’t fit the criteria, so he probably feels either UCF or FIU are possibilities. A win over EITHER of those programs at this point would be big. I sure hope he and the Zips can pull it off. That, like he has said numerous times, would make his job a whole lot easier.
  20. Grant Wahl with another classic article. He's the the best sportswriter on the planet, IMHO.
  21. My quick lunchtime take on yesterday's outing (Dr Z beat me to the punch, so excuse the repeat information): 1. The Quarry is a really nice course and terrific setting in general for an event like this. They could have had a little more food on the course, but I can't complain about the Yuengling kegs. 2. Since the response was so overwhelming this year, Coach Bowden threw out a suggestion that maybe they could have twice as many teams next year by having half play in the morning, everyone meet for lunch, and then have half play in the afternoon (presumably you'd have different awards for each?). 3. Now for the Coach Bowden sidebars: a. I recall him confirming every "additional" recruit (Kurt Mangum, Carlton Thomas, Jamel Turner, Hakeem Lawrence, etc) I've seen mentioned previously on ZnO. b. Several of the incoming FR offensive linemen are thought to be able to play 2nd string this year. c. He said plenty Moore but I don't want to steal anyone's (Keener, CK) thunder. 4. The event attracts quite an assortment of people. Well done UA.
  22. Welcome UCF93 and thanks for the info You are correct that UCF beat Akron in the Citrus Bowl in 2002, and the Zips returned the favor by beating the Knights in the Rubber Bowl in 2003. However, ZippyRulz is also correct in that the Zips won the series finale in the Citrus Bowl in 2004.
  23. Nice article on outing
  24. Zach is finished (the Stoudt, not the Zip).
