Enrollment of +32,000 and an endowment of +$223 million is nothing to sneeze at. The football program has been in the toilet historically, but Wayne St has always had pretty decent academics. I think this is the result of a conscious decision to not put too much emphasis on sports, as evidenced by their leaving the MAC shortly after being one of its charter members.

Do you ever watch any games on TV with Montana St, Montana, Northern Iowa, Appy St, Ga Southern, etc? Coaches at programs like these have absolutely nothing to gain by coming here (great crowds, similar pay). The guy at Lehigh or someone like Rob Ambrose from Towson might present a different story. My point is, we had better be looking at mid-to-lower level FCS teams/conferences to have a realistic shot.

I'm inclined to agree with you, based on the various statements he's made. But you better be sure you're not interested before pulling yourself out. Plus, he was somewhat preoccupied for the last few weeks.

Sorry Big Zip, this is Browns fan logic. Paul has done nothing wrong. He looked at the job and decided where he was was a better fit for him. I disagree. Paul Winters knew Akron was courting him. It was in numerous articles in Ohio and Michigan. If Paul Winters was not interested he should have said so 3 weeks ago. We potentially lost out on a better candidate because Paul Winters didn't say no from the outset. How do you know whether Paul didn't really make his mind up until last night or this morning? I'm sure he was torn either way. It's not too hard for me to believe that he needed to be squarely faced with the offer, and all the details associated with it, before he could make an educated decision.

If its the worst job in the country why would he want it? Well, why would he have wanted to coach at Wayne State? Two reasons: he won't have to work for a guy (TW) who screwed him two years ago. 2. He's either really, really happy at WSU or he thinks he can get a better job in the next few years (my guess is he's really happy and good for him) This Detroit Free Press story confirms that it's the latter. PW specifically cites Kehres as someone he'd like to emulate. It's hard to argue against that logic. He's probably getting close to $300K a year now, the GLIAC is getting noticeably weaker (Malone and Walsh soon to join), and he already has great recruiting pipelines in Michigan and Ohio. Besides, nobody knows better than Paul does what persistent losing can do to a person. Just looks what it's done to almost every football fan on this board. I look for him to win a D-II title or two before all is said and done. And I'll root for him to accomplish that, regardless of what happened today.

Maybe Proenza deserves some blame for this as well. It's easy to see in retrospect that TW is an albatross in this process. Probably should have canned him first and relied on a UA search team.

Well, now I at least hope we wind up with someone who advocates the spread offense. I still saw a lot of the same offset I power formations in watching Wayne St in the playoffs. Not sure how well that will work in the MAC in 2012. And I also hope that grin doesn't freeze on skip-zip's face. And I also hope CK recovers well from that 440 V jolt Onward!

This thread makes it sound like Adam Wallace is still available for whomever winds up being the Zips' next HC. One poster makes it sound like Mount Union is his likely destination at this point. Maybe you wouldn't normally offer a guy like this (who doesn't have any other D-1 offers apparently), but our circumstances our a little unusual this year. I hope the new guy at least gives him a hard look.
