Humpty Out, Chauncey In...
Jalapeño Zippy replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
EA is the only one I've ever seen refer to Gilliam as a forward or as being 235lbs. Everyplace else I've ever seen has him as a guard at around 220lbs. how about the umbc athletic dept web site? http://www.umbcretrievers.com/sports/mbball/roster.asp -
Just so you know, ISP is in charge of getting ads on the score board, not marketing the games. The site made it seem like more. I guess their scope is narrower than I had thought. So who is the man/woman at the reins of the Akron marketing campaign? Elizabeth Brinkman and Kevin Aha are the ones in charge of marketing for athletics

There are plenty of good people with marketing degrees, you just need to hire the right one. If there are two people in that department making 6 figures, fire them both, I can get you 1 to do a better job. PM me if your interested TW. Nice job CK. Facetiously speaking, so you are saying you're not a fan of the giant banner on the back of the fieldhouse that says Roo Town, This is your team?

Are you serious with that quote that the addition of Abreu is a clear indication that they realize Steve is limited as a PG. I think its an EXTREMELY CLEAR indication that Steve is a senior and someone has to be the PG once he graduates. That comment was just silly You're new to the board, so I'm not going to rip you too much for that. Suffice it to say that Steve IS a very limited PG. This debate has been hashed to death here for most of two seasons. Yes, Steve doesn't turn the ball over much, but his assist numbers are well below what you would expect out of a D-I point and he struggles to set up the offense. Far too often you can find him still frantically dribbling near the time line when the shot clock is inside 20 seconds. As a point he is almost a liability when it comes to running a fast break. Probably his biggest liability is trying to bring the ball up against quicker defensive PG (as well as trying to defend quicker PG's himself) Steve is a good player for us, but he is not enough of a facilitator to be a full-time PG. He is a combo guard that should be playing mostly at the two and playing backup minutes at PG. If you don't believe that the addition of Abreu has anything to do with Steve's limitations you need to check out some of the comments from the Basketball Banquet about Alex starting at PG with Steve sliding over to SG. You can find them here: http://zipsnation.org/forums//index.php?showtopic=18239 So is it Steve's limitations as you put it OR was it the limitations of the team and the talent of Steve that he has been able to manage a position of such importance for the past two years? Steve has given us stability at PG, to say he is limited is not right, to say that he transitioned from his natural position to help the program is more accurate. And by the way, just because something is blogged by fans doesn't make it a valid point of reference.

According to Rasor, Shaun Lemon will transfer
Jalapeño Zippy replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
That is the true question. We are hearing about all the cancers, players leaving the program, but which players do you think are stepping into those leadership roles? Almondo Sewell? Alex Allen? I want to know who the strong voices are on the team because for this team to be successful leadership is key. -
Digging has begun!
Jalapeño Zippy replied to tpsjugglerdude's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Ha-ha, no insults Mr. Mes. Just saying that as you had sensitive information and were reluctant to share regarding the basketball team (which I completely respect and agree with) others may have similar information regarding possible donations. People and companies have been approached and they are considering. Patience... -

prove it. Sure...the same way you proved that you knew which players were transfering out of the basketball program...after the fact. -

Game # 1 --- Akron had a horrible drought allowing Can't State to go on a 19-0 run. We got open looks and good shots inside, we missed and went cold.Game # 2 --- Akron was up early 11-5. Can't State again went on a run (14-1). Akron was ice cold all game shooting 20-some % up until the last 5 minutes or so. UA forgot to work the ball inside even though when we went inside, they had very little answers for us.Were they the aggressor? Absolutely, as Akron seemed intimidated, which completely pisses me off. I saw no one other than Nik who was willing to go at them as he took on Parks several times. UA needs to grow a pair if they want to win this tournament.

I'd say if like Michigan gave the first offer we'd see him commit there right away...but this is Akron we are talking about. As much as I love the Zips I just don't know what would make him want to come here, instead of a BCS school...That's why we need to come out of the gate winning. Look at our offers so far. Scout list. 6 offers, and 5 of them have at least three stars, while the one that doesn't will be rocketing up the charts soon. The coaches are shooting high. We're not going after recruits that receive interest from lots of MAC schools. The only way to land them is to beat 2 of the three BCS schools on the schedule this year and to have a winning conference record. Show them that we're at least on the same level or above the BCS bottom feeders, not one of the worst teams in the country. But we are. But if I'm a recruiter in that situation, and I'm not recruiting a kid who is obviously going to play at a BCS school right away, I'd go with the angle of being able to play as a freshman (and not getting buried with a boatload of other three/four star recruits). We don't have a lot of advantages but that might be one. At least we don't have to do distance drive-bys of the Rubber Bowl any more.Another angle I would use is 'hey look, we want you, they are waiting cause YOU (the recruit) are not as high on their priority list as you are on ours. We want you, they want you if someone else better doesn't come along.'

yeah i love reghi but he needs to know his facts. he barely calls the right players for either team and if i had to hear him call nik, cvet-ti-novich one more time last season i was gonna throw my tv. i wanna call his show on wknr and teach him names and everything else he gets wrongIf he is pronouncing things wrong, it is the job of the media relations team to correct it. Me, I am glad to have the games on tv. A few years ago we were lucky to see any game on. MAC basketball is exciting to watch but only if, and it's a big IF, the refs swallow their whistle.

ROFL I think you've actually convinced yourself Buffalo is outside of the USA... that would explain why we also chanted "Get an atlas" Sure our numbers were low, it was a Wed. night after all, I wasn't all that impressed by the HOME students. Your core is pretty loud but overall I thought it was a weak showing for senior night at home. We've sent 3 times that amount on a weeknight. But i understand you guys aren't quite as fanatic. And where was that trip to? Can't State? We had ~1000 students in attendance for your trip to Buffalo this year, I highly doubt you had 1000 there on wed. just sayingBecause no one cares about small time buffalo coming to town. When we come to town, people come out to watch.BTW, we've sent that much to Buffalo before, Ohio, and Miami in the past.Ignore him True Blue, he fights with people who root for the same team he does. From reading all of his posts he is one of those guys that even though he is 100% wrong he will argue cause he believes in his own mind that he is 100% right!

Can't's RPI is 58, ours is 106
Jalapeño Zippy replied to akronzips71's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
we are 100, right behind UNC, crazy season they've had. -
Actually, what we want to do is run the table (BG and Can't). That will guarantee us the MAC championship and at the very least an NIT bid, although I suspect that if we do win the league and lose the title game in the tourney we "could" get an at large to the NCAA. there is no way we get an at large to the NCAA, especially with losses to APSU, EMU, and beat downs by texas a&m, NC state, and VCU. the MAC very rarely gets more than one bid on up years, let alone on bad years like this one100% correct. We need to play hard and win out the regular season & MAC Tourney to go to the NCAA's! NIT will rely on us winning out the regular season. Anything less and we may not go post season at all.

Great Chase Blackburn Article
Jalapeño Zippy replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
I agree. One thing everyone should understand is most kids don't grow up wanting to play for UofA or any other MAC school. Most kids end up in the MAC because it is where they belong and they were passed over at BCS schools because they didn't have the ability to play there. It's not a bad thing, it just is what it is.....UofA shouldn't worry about what happens at tOSU. I could really care less about them and I think what goes on at UofA has very little to do with what goes on at tOSU. The only reason people think about it as us vs. them is we live in that type of society where everything has become all or nothing. Talk radio is a lot of us vs. themes...it helps people feel at home listening to the radio because they believe they are part of something bigger. UofA should put a good product on the field and play when they want to play. Put a good product on the field and the ABJ will write about them. Put a good product on the field and people will go to games. It's really not about tOSU.I diasgree. It's completely reasonable that CB grew up in c-bus wanting to go to OSU to play football. But he played at UA and he should be supporting the Zips now, not tosu. Screw Chase Blackburn! The diehards on this board bitch all the time that attendance is poor at UA games. Well, why should Joe Akron spend his hard earned money for a UA game when the players and former players don't give a damn about UA...You are correct, what goes on at UA does have very little to do with what goes on at tosu. However, what goes on at tosu has a huge impact on all other D1 Ohio schools, UA included.I know dozens of families in my community who are UA grads. And exactly none of them ever attend UA games. Yet I see all of them wearing their tosu gear...I see what you are saying. I just didn't read any negative toward UofA in his comments. He was asked a question about growing up in Columbus and being a tOSU fan. He gave an honest answer that had nothing to do with UofA. I'm sure there are a lot of kids who grew up near one school, cheered for it then went to another and still out of the corner of their eye follow the school they grew up near. I think that is natural. If UofA won, Joe Akron would go to games. If the MAC was more entertaining, Joe Akron would go to games. If they played on reasonable days, Joe Akron would go to games. If they played at reasonable times, Joe Akron would go to games. I think Blackburn's opinions have little to nothing to do with that. In fact, I'm not sure how many Joe Akrons out there, when they watch a Giants game, know Blackburn went to UofA.Who is this Joe Akron guy? I called the alumni office and they had never heard of him. I can't think that someone with that much clout would be flying so low under the radar. -
I still say 10 wins takes the MAC East
Jalapeño Zippy replied to jupitertoo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I think Ozoner offers great insight on the MAC and OU. Always welcome! -
I agree he should too, but foul trouble keeps him limited quite a bit with boneheaded calls by the refs on obviously clean blocks.

based on the +/- the best starting backcorut we have would probably put Ronnie at the 1 and McNees at the 2. Thoughts?

Okay, let me get this straight. You have a problem with "lack of control"?Yet..... you appear to be griping about suspensions, which is an indication that policy is being enforced, or at least that anarchy is not going to prevail.Right? First off, let me just say that, philosophically speaking, and sociologically as well, control is an illusion. However, in the sense of maintaining discipline, a suspension is not only an indication that something went wrong, it is also inherently an indication that something is being done to correct it. Since players are human beings and not robots on remote control, no coach is "in control" so to speak. Now, to be fair, I think that what you are suggesting is that KD is being heavy handed, and the suspensions are unwarranted? No, what I am saying is this:These are full scholarship athletes on a Div I team. The coach's job is to motivate them to be good players AND good students AND good citizens. Even the THREAT of suspension means something is wrong. That should be a last resort. Now, a player can stray now and then. Lets face it, Babe Ruth, the greatest ballplayer and probably the greatest pro athlete of all time would have been suspended by KD before he ever got into a game, and RIGHTFULLY SO! He was a bum off the field. But after Humpty was suspended last week, the message should have gotten out. That is did not is partly, if not totally, the coaches fault. I could be the coach and suspend players, that takes no special talent. It is maintaining team and personal discipline WITHOUT imposing sanctions that takes special talent. Can you give any thoughts on how to discipline without suspending, because apparently KD is a complete moron and has no idea.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "majority lead," but the play-by-play of the Zips-Zags game (link below) shows that the Zips were never more than 4 points behind until 8:15 was left in the game. The Zips led the Zags from 6:40 remaining in the first half to 13:15 remaining in the second half, or 13:25, and a couple of times after that, as well.In the 10 minutes between 16:54 remaining in the first half and 6:40 remaining in the first half, the Zips pulled ahead of the Zags 6 different times.Only in the last 9 minutes of the game did the Zags clearly outplay the Zips. For the other 31 minutes, the Zips were either leading, tied, or within 4 points.Zips-Zags Play-By-PlaySo in all of those stats do you see a major lead for Akron. I do not. A lead by 4 points is clearly not insurmountable. You can tell yourself whatever you like but gonzaga was never in clear danger of losing that game. Gonzaga played almost everyone on their bench while Akron was in their normal rotation the whole game. As it looked to me was that Mark Few was conserving as much as he could knowing that Gonzaga was going to play more games. Keep thinking that Akron is at Gonzaga's level, and that is why Akron is laughed at outside this ring of nonsense. It only takes one point to win and I guarantee you that no coach would conserve in a lose and go home tournament.
