What do Zips Fans Really think?
Jalapeño Zippy replied to MDZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
1. National Title in Soccer2. NCAA Basketball Tournament3. Football Bowl GameNow if we start putting in stipulations order may change, but hands down a National Title period would mean alot to this school no matter what sport it is in. -
Larry Dawson is still on the roster. With his size and build he could be a factor next season as well.

Recruits at Miami game
Jalapeño Zippy replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
I was told Josh Enger was one but honestly didn't pay that close attention. -
I was told Vince Okruch was hired as our safeties and special teams coach.

Akron @ OU: Webcast link included
Jalapeño Zippy replied to jupitertoo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Marshall is going to be a great player for us, but watching him play a few things stand out. He currently doesn't seem to be trusting the natural athletic ability he possesses and appears to be favoring his knees quite a bit. With that, I honestly don't think he is ready to be on the floor when closing out games. Not to mention he needs to improve his FT%. -
The University Team Shop
Jalapeño Zippy replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Call the soccer office, maybe they can order you an official jersey (That's how I got my Official Football Jersey). Also, from my understanding B&N Bookstore now operates the Athletics Team Shop.Or maybe we can all get together and order them at one time from the athletics equipment manager. -
Finally, its high time to recruit some stud players. Read that as "athletes". Mostly coach D findsbasketball players. Akron has just one "stud" player. And currently he is worth his weight in gold.We need four or five more studs similar to Jimmy Conyers. URI's starting guards were six-four and six-five. When the Zips get a six-five player you see himplaying the small forward. note: Name a stud player in the incoming class of recruits. They are all quality basketball players. Not a stud among them. It's not like Coach D and staff aren't going after them - Adreain (sp?) Payne rings a bell of someone we tried to get, Markus Crider looks strong and Jakaar Sampson is another solid recruit we are targeting. So the effort is there, we just need some of the recruits to believe in the program enough to sign on the dotted line.

D-Line coach has been hired - Derrick Jackson from Syracuse and Mitch Browning IS on staff according to someone close to the program. But again still nothing confirmed.

You lose 100% of the games you never schedule. Can't beat good programs, or even compete with them if you don't schedule them. It is that simple. If that is true, then Duke, North Carolina, OSU, CSU have all lost to us because they never scheduled us.Quick call that in to the RPI people.edit* It's funny that you guys think we could even compete for an at large bid. 20 wins with 6 losses to Duke, Pitt, UConn, OSU, Michigan State, and Kansas, get's us the same thing we have right now. No bids and getting ready to start the MAC Tournament. Until we are good enough to compete and beat top 30 teams, we need to have an easy schedule with some bench mark games so that we don't get beat up going into MAC play. It's gotten us to the Championship game 3 years in a row, and taking away poor Ref work, should have been two Dance Invites. It isn't simply about earning that at large bid. In that respect you are probably right, we probably won't get an at large with a 20-6 season with losses against Duke, Pitt, UConn, OSU, Michigan State and Kansas. What playing those teams does for us, outside of the potential that we could actually beat them, is generates at least a little bit of excitement for the program. Let's face it, no one gave a crap when we played Malone, UNCGreensboro and St.Francis in consecutive games, and the attendance numbers bore that out. No one is going to care next week when we go on the road to take on Wyoming. If a team wins 26 games and no one is around to see it, did they really win 26 games? Well, yeah, but it certainly doesn't do anything to help the program. I don't know about you, but I think it sucks that we can't draw more than 1,500 fans for our OOC games. That is truly a shame. Now let's say you do go out and schedule a couple more games, on the road, against teams like Duke, Pitt, UConn, OSU, Michigan State or Kansas. Nobody that I know of has yet argued for the Charlie Coles method of scheduling all of your OOC games against powerhouses like that, but just a couple more. Now you can say, hey we went out and played some good teams. Teams that you want to see. And if you should beat one of those teams (see CSU over Syracuse last year), well then the flood gates open up. ESPN highlights, check. Increased attendance, check. Actually being able to win a game in the NCAA's, check. It isn't all about the at large bid. Playing a couple more teams on your OOC schedule that are worthwhile opponents has far reaching benefits. No one gave a crap when Top 25 Nevada came here. No one gave a crap when Dayton was here last year either so what does that mean? What was attendance 2500? (Not picking on you, just having a conversation)
-
Look if we beat Austin Peay and compete against NC State, then maybe there would be a reason to schedule tougher. But until that happens, KD is going to schedule teams to get the confidence up. That will not change until we start winning the games we are supposed to win

Yup, you aren't close to the Hipshers at all.I am so close I am Dan's shadow. Dan Hipsher paved the road that the Zips are traveling down now. He gave the Zips the credability that they carry now. Thank You Dan where ever you are right now. Rumor is that he might come back and coach the Football team to a MAC East Title. Are yout a gumshoe Quick? Conf. Conf. Year Coach Record Pct. Maybe you have Dan Hipsher confused with Bob Huggins or Keith Dambrot when talking about coaches that have actually given Zips Basketball any sort of credibility in the Division I era? Or maybe you're just in love with Dan Hipsher? Either one is fine with me, but it's obvious that Dan Hipsher doesn't hold a candle to the things that Huggins and Dambrot have done for Akron Basketball. The numbers speak for themselves.Dambrot is the beneficiary of a weak MAC, when Hipsher was there every team seemed to have NBA talent. Now it seems as if Toledo, Cent Mich, Eastern, Can't, BGSU, are all teams that are struggling to compete in the MAC. Name me 5 players to play in NBA since Dambrot came to Akron and Hipsher left Akron. While Hipsher was there Casey Shaw Toledo, Chris Kaman Cent Mich, David Webber Cent Mich, Keith Mcleoud BGSU, Shawn Stonerook Ohio, Brandon Hunter Ohio, Wally Szerbiak Miami, Derrick Dials Eastern Mich, Anthony Stacey BGSU, Trevor Huffman Can't, Antonio Gates Can't State, Earl Boykins East Mich, Antonio Daniels BGSU, John Edwards Can't State, Ira Newbel Miami, Tamar Slay Marshall, Bonzi Wells Ball St, Theron Smith Ball St.. Seems to me Hipsher was coaching aginst way better talent. I realize some are not in NBA but all played on an NBA summer team in the last 4 years. If all this 'talent' was coming to the MAC, Dan failed in getting any of his own to compete.

What if...Larry Kehres, Mount Union coach
Jalapeño Zippy replied to Akron1's topic in Akron Zips Football
Seriously? Kehres is a great coach, but he doesn't have to recruit, all scholarships are academic and talent trips over itself to be coached by him and by talent I mean D3 talent. He would be lost in D1 with all the variables attached at this level and frankly at his age, I highly doubt he cares to take the time to learn. -
These renderings have no intimate detail. Where are the renderings that we got with the stadium? The ones with the Sims characters walking around level 5? I want to see a Sims character walking into the dugout, locker area, over by the concessions and team shop. One sitting in the bleachers looking down on the field. Maybe I'm just spoiled by what we got with the Info, but this seems second rate and that to me is not good enough for our soccer program.

Right there shows the importance of attendance. It makes a difference when recruiting these kids. Absolutely the Rowdies and the die hard fans brought Bunbury here and now that he as well as the rest are here, we need to show how important they are on the university side by getting them a stadium they deserve.
-
Great video, now how long did that take you? You say quick, but come one, seriously? Our athletics department is waaay understaffed to get one of those done.

I HATE that! So much momentum going into the post-season, then Kersplat! And the fact that it was Miami (MIAMI!) makes it that much worse! Coach Pfau, you have a good group of youngsters, now it's time to reach the next level. 2010 needs to be the club's breakout year.Instead of dwelling on the loss, let's celebrate the great season and the future of the Women's soccer program! +1

We already have Josh Couch coming in off his greyshirt. He was rated as 1 of the top punters in the nation last year as a senior. Was NFL Punt, Pass and Kick National Champion in 05' and 07'. We also have 6' 325lb mad man NT Chris Henderson also a greyshirt. Nicley, Torrence, Wagner, LaFrance, Schrock, Hoobler, Caponi and so many other young players, who ever the Coach is will have a wealth of young talented football players.I'm excited about the players we have coming in and the underclassmen we have on the team. A couple of things go the other way this year and our record would be alot better.Question is though, do we have the right coaching staff here that recognizes those crucial mistakes and fixes them or do the same mistakes keep happening?3rd string QB threw 2 intercetions against Buffalo, but played really well against Syracuse even though the line gave him very little time, coaching progress made regarding the QB but WTH is up with the O-Line, as for the fumbles by the running backs, problem still remains there and dammit, where is our o-line? 4 freaking returning starters.
-
very interesting read, all points are valid. but it comes down to this, JD can't keep the RB from fumbling in the redzone, the kid needs some stick'em! 3 fumbles in the redzone, 2 costly, 1 recovered by a lineman.2nd string QB, fumbling in the redzone, throwing interceptions on the opponents side of the field, lack of focus.Special teams giving up returns for TDs and fumbling kick-offs, at least we got one back. Why isn't #21 returning kicks?3rd string QB threw two crucial interceptions against buffaloPoint is - JD can't control what happens on the field with individual players. But he is at fault for not putting the players in situations to be successful and playing to their strengths. The talent is there, but it is being used horribly.

Elton details 2010 recruiting
Jalapeño Zippy replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
I would be surprised to see KD pulling offers. -
Here's an FYI...a team we beat by 41 points charges the same price we do and even has a premium price that goes above ours for one of their games. So let's stop complaining, we have a bargain and I think prices are right where they need to be.

It's 3 hours prior to kick-off last I heard. Team marches through Zipsfest 2 hours prior to kick-off.
