Well i think a reason that people don't want to be a part of the Rowdies is the fact that we just aren't that impressive in terms of a college type student section. For example:-Rowdies: I research that an opposing player was found guilty of having sex with a minor or was charged with rape. When he's shooting free throws I yell "LOOK A TWELVE YEAR OLD GIRL!" or start a "NO MEANS NO" chant with a few friends. This of course causes some freshman or sophomore goody AK-R to come up to me and explain that i cannot say such things because there are children present. Yes, at a college basketball game in THE student section i was told that i was being inappropriate for yelling something that had no profanity whatsoever (like that matters either). This exact event has played out multiple times the last few years, i personally ignore it but that kind of sissy attitude is embarrassing. -Cameron Crazies: When a Maryland player was alleged to have sexually abused a fellow student, the Crazies showered him with more than 1,000 panties, and one student held up a sign that read, "HEY, (NAME), DID YOU SEND HER FLOWERS?"People cheered, they did not say "oh that was inappropriate".That is the main problem with the rowdies. It's turned into a highschool fan group and not a college student section like it should be. When it comes to college sports, the more lewd & cruel, the BETTER.

This is good to hear, and i agree with you. There just isn't much to be done unless you want to help change things like me and a small group (10 or so) of others have been doing.Sit on the North side next year, there will be plenty of room and hopefully you and your friends can help build this thing into something bigger than an exclusionary group of people.

ZippyTuba, you are probably the smartest band member on here. Your ideas are what have been trying to be portrayed but couldn't be said by others. You truly know what it takes to make a great band and I wish more members were like you instead of just defending the laziness/other excuses. (btw, the 110 doesn't have a set number anymore, it used to have 110 but that has since changed)AMENand btw, having the band at soccer games would be GREAT!Isn't there a rule about "noisemakers" at MAC soccer contests though? Ya know that MAC cant have any noise at their soccer games!

well to be fair some of the cheers are kind of lame. I mean the "you can't do that" cheer is used all over the country, by every school and it just comes across as lazy. They need to think of some new and unique cheers to start. I joined the rowdies my freshman year, and I was really disappointed. I went to a high school where we had hundreds of students in our cheering section, our cheering section would fill up 3 sections at the rubber bowl. I know sometimes when I was with the rowdies there would be 2 different cheers going on, i mean come on, thats just sad! You want people to get involved and make the rowdies great, that needs to start at the top. Make a better cheering section, and people will cheer! If we're in there and 5 different cheers are going on, ya we can't go along with all of them. I'm hoping that it gets better at the Info, but who knows....ps idk who does all the canada stuff when buffalo comes to town, but buffalo is not in canada and that really doesn't make any sense?? they're not canadians...the Z-I-P-S is a direct rip off of O-H-I-O, and I hate OSHWHO so that needs to stop tooi'm sorry but it wasn't a complete attack of the rowdies, but you need to know why people don't want to get involved...stealing cheers and lame antics are not going to get people excited....ok that's fine and all, but i'm not talking about the cheers. you don't have to cheer if you don't want to. i'm just sayin at least pay attention to the game. oh and by the way, we all know buffalo really isn't in canada, but it really piss them off when we say it. so since it does that, i'm goin to say it loud and proud "BUFFALO'S IN CANADA!!!!!!!!!!"As a Rowdie (a rowdie every year it's been in existence as well) let me say that i agree with both of you. The truth is the cheers are pretty lame at times, but then again at least we are paying attention. The biggest problem i see is that the Rowdies have this need to be almost high school like in attitude. You have no idea how many times i've seen a freshman Rowdie turn around and go "oh my god, that's innappropriate" or "shhh, you cant say that!" when people are trying to heckle. Honestly, when i was in highschool at basketball games, we heckled and said things far worse than what most Rowdies seem to think is bad. I mean come on this is COLLEGE basketball. The students are supposed to be ridiculous, many are supposed to be hammered drunk, and you are SUPPOSED to be extremely cruel to the other team. Profanity isn't even that bad as long as you dont go overboard, it's COLLEGE.Now that being said, i would love to see the Rowdies adopt more of a "Northside" (of the JAR) Rowdies attitude. Speedo guys, giant hands, extreme drunken heckling, getting opposing players to jaw at them/flip them off, etc... is what it's all about. That really is the only college basketball/football atmosphere i see at Zips games these days.

All this astroturf talk is disgusting. Football is supposed to be played on REAL GRASS.

and here I thought you were talking about steelers fans p.sI know this is very off topic but I was at a cav's game for my birthday and I saw a lot of people walking around with steeler and cavs gear. if that isn't a front runner who should take a bath with a toaster then I don't know what is (they were probably wearing some yankee boxers too)GOD, i saw the same thing recently. It's like the Steelers/Buckeyes fans, they are everywhere too. Honestly I could care less about Sh*tsburgh. -The Penguins suck (Ovechkin is two times better than Crosby)-The Pirates REALLY suck (what else needs to be said?)-The Steelers are lucky and get every call.GO BROWNS, CAVS, TRIBE (patience they will turn it around), BlueJackets, AND of course GO ZIPS!And hey how about that new stadium of ours?! Nicer than anything in crappy Pittsburgh!

A MAC team has won a National Championship. Bowling Green won in Hockey in 1984 i believe. I don't believe Miami would have brought the MAC a National Championship. I think they are in the CCHA for hockey.Miami is in the CCHA. How fitting though, i'm glad they lost. I hope it felt the same way that bank shot felt for us.

OMG I know...can the people that run this site do like they do with Can't=Can't, make Pittsburgh=Sh*tsburgh haha. Ok well I don't mean to go off topic but yes fair weather fans are the worst and Sh*tsburgh fans are the prime example. Growing up in Erie, PA I have see them come out of no where. Back when Kordell Stewart and Maddox ran that team you couldn't find a steelers fan anywhere, then all of a sudden they all show up with their die-hard lifetime obnoxious fan attitudes. Same with the penguins, a few years ago the team was so bad and no one cared, the actually wanted to move them! now everyone loves them and they claim they always have! If anyone doubts me, just wait until hell freezes over and those Pirates actually start doing good, and you'll see thousands of Pirates fans come out of nowhere. OSWHO and PSWHO are fans no different, they win a few games and everyone goes to their local wal-mart and buys a crappy $10 knock-off jersey. Maybe someday people will jump on the Akron band wagon and we can actually fill some seats! Hopefully that will come next year with the awesome stadium! The Penguins still suck, all that talent and they are what the 6th seed in the conference? Psh, the Blue Jackets might have the same seed (depending on if Colorado can win tomorrow) so that says alot.

Well Zips fans that i know that are also Suckeyes fans always say that they root for them because "they are close to us". So i'm rooting for Pitt now as my second team since they are 15 miles closer than Cowlumbus. So as much as i hate the steelers, The University of Pittsburgh is my new second fav school just to piss those people off. Hey it's closer!

Well being a club team means:1) We pay our own way. Actually though we have raised alot of money through sponsorships and only had to pay about 200 dollars a person to play. That's well under what i pay for summer ball so not too bad.2)Tryouts were open to any student and we held them in mid to late october last fall. We had about 45 people at tryouts just from word of mouth and me sending a few facebook messages. I expect that this fall when we hold tryouts again there will be even more interest. 3) Club Baseball is actually quite competitive. Most would compare it to D2 or high D3 baseball. Actually, i believe we have 7 guys who played college ball somewhere else before coming here. They played at places like Ohio Northern and Tiffin. Many schools use the Club teams as a pipeline for talent and take players for the "varsity" team. Some schools (Penn State for example) even go as far as sending guys that don't get much playing time down to their club teams (they have 2) to get them more work. We don't exactly have that sort of relationship yet with the baseball program but i have spoken to Coach Bangston and i am trying to get something like that organized. So basically i would say that yes we are somewhat of a JV team. I don't want to sound like i'm talking us up too much but i am pretty confident that a good few of our players could play if not start for the Varsity team here. I know that a handful of my guys are planning on trying out this fall so we will see who makes the cut. A few transferred here with that intent.I would especially love to organize a scrimmage with the team but I have a feeling they wouldn't want to do such a thing considering they really don't have anything to gain from it. But anyone that is interested in playing next year feel free to stay tuned for information as i will be sure to have fliers posted on campus and a good bet would be to join this group on facebook. It is how i get most information out about the team. Club Baseball groupAnd? Should i have stated that we are on the same level of competition and skill as the University Baseball team? Please help as i do not know any other word to use to describe how we are a club team?
-
Yes that is correct, though i would hope anyone with affiliation to the NCAA would know what a Club sports team is. BTW, Wright State canceled on us today. Seems that their field does not hold water well, attempts to find another site were not successful. That's Club ball for you.

I'm at the Jake right now, supposedly OSWHO promotes themselves and called them (the indians) to set this up. Well that is what i just heard from two "3rd best band in the land" members.maybe we should just go down to cowlumbus and do ourselves a Blue Jackets game The CBJ's are going to be playing for the cup, what better time to embarrass that school down south than now by playing in their hometown arena during the NHL playoffs?Somebody get that organized.

During halftime at the last game in the Rubber Bowl when we played Up, Up and Away. It was the last set and then we marched it downfield and straight into our seats. Someone wasn't paying attention. It was a tribute to the band back in the 70's.You have done it in the past as well.

I read the second sentence in the article (above) multiple times, and I STILL can't make heads or tails of it's grammar and logic. But I can tell you, the Big Time Tournament in Vegas is about twice as big in # of ballers. And maybe someone can call an NCAA attorney for the definitions of "contact" and "booster". Is no one wearing an Akron Zips T-shirt allowed to tell a player he'd enjoy watching him wear blue and beige? It's pretty clear cut. We're not to have direct contact with the potential recruit or family members. Not sure who the Blue and Beige are .. but if a UA booster finds themselves encountering a potential recruit or family member, he or she is only permitted to exchange pleasantries. If the recruit/family has questions, the UA booster can only refer them to the Athletic Department staff or coaches, per NCAA guidance.See This link and scroll down to booster behavior.Who says the person is a booster? I bet there are people on ZN who are not students or alumni. They can say whatever they want.
-
Tell you what we can do though. As Zips fans we can get a great look at some of these kids ourselves. Maybe organize a few rowdies to head to a game and get in their ears ourselves.

I'm a student and i would buy one even, actually i would like a picture of the blimp formation you guys did. That was awesome.

Of all people why weren't we recruiting him?
RootforRoo44 replied to RootforRoo44's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Of course, I'm just saying if i could free up a scholarship somehow that would be a great pickup if for name only. Now i know in the article it says he didn't want someone wanting him for that reason but you could have convinced him with the MJ/LBJ argument. Noone can tell me it wouldn't be great to have a connection with those two. -
Meanwhile in Portage County

One thing i will say is that i would take those kind of stats from one of our point guards any year. -
There's already a "friends of the band" fund. Not sure if Lentine's Music was a supporter before they went under, but corporate sponsorships (sticks, heads, reeds, etc.) are one way to help. I'm sure the economy will probably hinder those type of requests. With GK out, I'm not sure who is in charge of getting that funding (RJ?).I guarantee most people dont know about this "friends of the band" fund. The economy may be bad but it's sure as hell not that bad for the school. They need to allocate some funds, and that's what we should be fighting for. I'm sure there are plenty of things in the schools budget that don't need to be and the money could come from there. Small fundraisers could work as well, but i think the way to go is through the school. If they can afford a $65 million stadiuim, they can afford a little money to give us a band that can perform on the level required for our new big stage.
-
Ya know what? That's what this topic should be about, if no one else is going to do it let's start it here at Zipsnation. Let's work on getting the band the funding it needs so they can get rid of the crappy broke instruments and get on par with the rest of the MAC. Any ideas? How do we petition for such a thing? Maybe start a facebook group to get things rolling?

We were criticized in another thread for even bringing up the idea. It's too much of an OSU rip off.Rip off of OSU? Who do you think actually started it?........................Thats right, MICHIGAN at an OSU MI game. the band did it in the 90's so who cares? If we don't want it to be a rip off then we won't worry about dotting the "i" That is the real tradition for OSU. Tell me this isn't cool. Just stating a fact man. We were crticized in another thread saying it was too much of a rip off. Here's the link before you you bite my head off.Classic Script ZipsAfter reading that thread again I realize that Root4Roo was complaining back then too. Instead of complaining just give us some reasonable suggestions and we'll listen. You guys were sure as hell making lame excuses and pointing the blame elsewhere back then as well. Really, it's too bad the guy's that actually take responsibility dont post on here more, they are what the band really needs. We said the same thing then we're saying now. We need more money to get instruments that aren't falling apart before we can have a super band. If you can find another D-1 marching band that has worse equipment then we do then point them out. I'd love to see it. There is literally duct tape holding some of the instruments together. Even the two "good" sousaphones we use for the basketball games are in terrible shape. Drummers have had to stop playing on the field because their drums would fall apart. We can't have auditions and cut people until we get people to want to come here. It took 65 million dollars to help the football recruiting and we would only need a fraction of that to help ours. Right now if our numbers go up we're going to have to cut people not because they can't play, but because we don't have working instruments for them to use. I don't know how many times I have to say the same thing before it gets through your thick skull. We aren't making excuse after excuse after excuse. We're trying to tell you how it is and you're being ignorant. Why dont you do something about it then? Go open their eyes and request some funding. All i hear on here are complaining about it but nothing is being done. Why aren't you holding fundraisers? I haven't seen any. Again, excuses but no action...that seems to be the norm here. Here are some poorly funded/not funded at all bands:-Kansas State-University of Virginia (band was just created a few years ago after a massive donation to the school to start it) At least you guys have instruments and exist!-Eastern Tennessee State University (no marching band because of no funding, this is a 14,000 student school)There are more im sure if i looked...the question is how much does the band receive yearly? Does anyone know?
