Oh and you do Lee? So what's your claim to fame that makes you have "cred", and how dare you to decide what REAL fans are? A little pomposity my Ashland friend....
Oh, the'ad hominem' attacks start again. I normally do not adress the posters on this site directly. I'ts a waste of time. And since somebody was DETA,I am 68 years old. What the hell is with the 'Ashland friend' stupid comment'? I have no connection to Ashland, Ohio or that college. Please enlighten all of us, since some of you are back to the personal attacks again. If you can tell me my connection to Ashland,Ohio I might want to visit some long lost relatives or friends. I await.

I think your concern would be better justified by focusing on just about any other position.
Akron has a tradition of ignoring the tight end as a passing option.
With the Zips offensive scheme, just about any interior lineman could fill the position of tight end.
I have previously suggested that we rename the position "Decoy" to no avail.
I am surprised Arth did not use any TE more in the offense. Thought he would especially since the O-line was bad and the run game was non-existent.

WOW! Never thought after all these years, nay decades of watching Akron football that I would ever see another one of these. Not mad just really disappointed, deflated and on and on.
I was hoping that Arth might be able to bring in some additional kids, add to what was already there and have the team show improvement from September to November. The scary thing is that there appeared to be no improvement over the season in O-line play, running game or QB play on that side of the ball. The defense was still unable to stop the run OR the pass consistently. Little pass rush, leaky secondary and not much ability to stop the run. Again, little if any improvement from start to finish. There were a few kids who played well at times thats true. But,since we saw little improvement during the season,I am now very concerned about how this program can 'bounce back' next season. What is going to be a 'strength' on either side of the ball. Very concerned.

However, he's a nasty curmudgeon who only looks for the negative when it comes to U of A. He did a vicious hit piece on Groce a few years ago which will prove to be wrong. I got into an email back and forth with him, and he's arrogant and hateful. I've been happy with the ABJs recent coverage of UA, but I knew this was coming. I don't know why he has to continue to rip on the stadium. Nothing can be done about it now.

Folks! I have had season tix since way back in the Rubber Bowl days. I did not attend last night not because I thought U of A was going to get blown out, which they did. BUT, because the game was meaningless, the Akron Athletic Dept. treats fans as if this is the Big 10. They think they can nickel an dime revenue out of attendance. NEVER HAPPENED! NEVER WILL!
I did not attend last night. First time since 2009 I have not. See above! Whether Arth is the answer or not. Who cares?! Bleeding cash. Not winning consistently. Where do we go!!!???

Great! Move the K/O again! On a shitty Tuesday night when nobody but a few of us would show up anyway, start jackin' the K/O time again. 6PM or 8PM ain't gonna matter this year. I know TV dictates some of this crap. But, EMU 30-10.

Yet they're a winning program, which was my point. I was challenging the contention that success is measured by another program wanting to swipe the person or not. I don't think that's a good measure of success; but that's just me.
Lots of people on this board do not like Frank. Yet ,he and his program at OU are only what we could dream about being. Consistent winning. Guy knows what he is doing!

The football program bleeds money because of the football stadium. A cost that doesn't go away regardless if we drop down or eliminate football entirely. I've made more detailed posts in the past on the matter, but a quick rundown the football program costs ~$10 million to run. $4 million of that is tied to the stadium debt payments. This means the operating costs are $6 million. We get ~$1.5 million per body bag game, which we have been scheduling 2 per year so that's $3 million in revenue right there. Next we get ~$1 million for the MAC tv deal. The college football playoff distributions pays something in the neighborhood of $500k-$800k. Just between those three revenue sources we're looking at $4.5 million in revenue. This doesn't even include ticket sales, parking, concessions, advertisements, etc.
Football gets $1.5 million for EACH sacrifice game? Ummm. What did it get for the South Carolina game? Not sure.

As the father of a college diver, I appreciate your point about keeping the entire program in view, not just football.
Do I WANT Akron to move back down to FCS or DII!? Hell I don't want them to! But given the financial state of the ENTIRE University and the financial state of athletics specifically, moving wouldn't bring in any more money, but it would cost less to operate the AD which could free up some money to go to other areas. No, the bill on Info wouldn't go away. Never said it would.
But costs would be reduced. Students wouldn't be footing as much of the bill for an activity in which the vast majority have little or no interest. How many attend games on a regular basis? Yet, part of their student fees go to support the AD,no?
Would the athletic teams be more competitive at FCS or DII? Who knows for sure. But, they were previously. What would happen to swimming/diving, soccer and track/field?No sports at U of A are self supporting are they? This is all gonna depend on how the new Prez sees an urgency to make changes. And, no the University can not afford to pay off another fired coach whether it be football or basketball. Oh, and baseball comes back in the spring. But,it got a big infusion of money from an outside source.
Given the states of the football and basketball programs,2020 is going to be a very important year for athletics here.
Can we at least have a few fans to show up for the EMU game, please?

2005 MAC Title Game.
What a road to get in, needing help from the NIU/WMU game. What a comeback. Garrett Wolfe throwing up over 200 yds on the ground, prompting the SportsCenter personality to say in an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice, "I will poop on all your defense!" My dad wanting to leave with something like 3-5 minutes left in the game before wisely appeasing his 11 year old son at the time who wanted to stay (I still remember the pessimist in him thinking Hixon dropped the ball, thinking "that's an Akron thing to happen"). Hixon battling cramps all game. And of course, who could forget...
"Getsy pumps, he throws for Hixon and it is... CAUGHT! FOR A TOUCHDOWN! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!"
My wife and I were at that game. I was standing in the aisle at Ford Field throwing some'f' bombs before the final drive. NIU just ran out of gas and Hixon ran right past his defender. Still think Getsy was one of at least the top 3 'QB's in Akron history. Not the best athlete. But, he could run a game. Thanks Luke.

Okay Lee, I'll ask you, because you are a knowledgeable poster here and have been a Zipper for a long time. You have suggested several times that we might consider dropping down a level for football. Do you know what or how much Akron would save or stop bleeding if we did as you suggest? What's an average FCS team like YSU, James Madison, Lehigh football expenditures, vs. Akron's? And that's operational costs, as we know we can't do anything about the debt on Infocision. And if we did drop football to an FCS team, what conference do you think Akron would best fit in, trying to preserve our Championship and National level talent in other sports like soccer, track and field, swimming, and would fit the new baseball and WLAX teams? Your thoughts....
Do I know $ figures for what might be saved? No. But, overall expenses would be less at FCS or DII,no? As far as competing in the MAC,gone, obviously. Whether the University would want to continue to try to compete at the DI level in lets say soccer or T and F,probably couldn't. Recruiting would be impossible. Could Akron eventually compete against the likes of YSU et. al on a regular basis? OVC? They were there once. More likely there than what they have been trying to do since what, the early 1990's or earlier. Shoot, if they were still DII I'd love to see them playing teams like IUP,the 'Rock',Clarion,PSAC. etc.
They could play Ashland (Lee Owens), Sag. Valley,Wayne State.
Info. is the 5000 lb. elephant in the room. A shame. Never was gonna be the jolt people thought. Maybe we can explore the costs a little more. Winning cures all. We need wins ASAP!

Rumor has it (on zn.o) that it's already a done deal. Probably FCS (a little less losing) but preferably Div. II (more winning).
Div. III (lots of winning!) would be the ultimate prize, but probably too much to hope for at this point.
Well, we all know rumors are like a certain part of everyone's anatomy. But,you all know I have been throwing this out for a few years now. Not because I want to see it happen. But, because I think the new Prez. was brought in to try to 'clean up' the financial mess that that one of the (unamed) previous Prezes put the U of A in. This may be less about athletics than FINANCES!! NO!? The 2 main varsity sports, football and basketball are financial losers. Big expenditures, little return. Soccer, though generally successful doesn't add to the bottom line financially.
I am not so sure that possible recruits are going to see all this and walk away from Akron, unfortunately. If football and basketball can have successful seasons in 2020 it may postpone anything drastic....but.

They were my highlights, especially the win over Northern Michigan. It was my first real tailgate experience and my first "sneak a flask into a game" game. We said we'd do a shot after every score. I was hammered! But the excitement of that game and those games were the beginning for me.
C'mon Lee, I'm with ZippyRulz, you've got to stop this wishing we were small again. It ain't gonna happen, nor should it. The MAC is a good home for us, and if we dropped down to FCS or D2, it would destroy all the other top-caliber programs we have, besides football. I know you only look at the football side, but Men's soccer and soon to be women's soccer, swimming and diving, track and field, now volleyball...they would be decimated.
I don't disagree. But, 'follow the money'. Unfortunately a lot more going out than coming in.

One positive way to look at this is that sometimes you truly have to bottom out in order to make the meteoric rise.
When putting together a staff your first staff would logically be your best effort, as it would be fresh, new, and full of hope. How many people are going to jump on board an 0-12 team and put their careers on the line? What you are criticizing here with the makeup of Arth's staff was literally a harbinger of what we are around to see in terms of player recruitment. If you cannot get a staff of qualified people to surround you as a head coach what does that forecast for the future? Nice guys, sure, but also proving to be unqualified for the task at hand. Arth has now gone a full calendar year without a win as a head coach. Someone thought it was a good idea to buy him out of his Chattanooga contract to launch this pain train. Who are the people who made these decisions? That's rhetorical. Last year was a once in a decade opportunity to right the course of the Zip football program, and all signs at the present are that there were some major flaws in the financial and search aspects of this process.
It's always darkest before the dawn.
Keeping it real, we all know this personnel make-up is not changing any time soon. We bought out Bowden, and paid Chattanooga to get Arth, the athletics department has no revenue coming in off football and so this is our reality for the next 3-4 years. Our new President, Gary Miller, shared that "We need a strategic horizon about three to five years where we really make some hard choices, go with our strengths and move the university through the current proximate difficulties," he said., Miller's last two schools did not even have football, so there is no precedent in his past which points to investing more money in football when the rest of the university is struggling with fiscal matters. The University of Akron saw an overall 6.5% decline in enrollment this fall
Someone wrote above "Good money after bad", perhaps, but there has never been a steady stream of revenue coming in off Akron Football to look back on and say we are missing out on anything, so it's truly hopeful conjecture to assume that it could ever materialize. The next two home games are on Tuesday nights in November and will have less than 1,000 butts in Infocision Stadium, and a winless 2019 season hanging over the program. That's the reality of what our coaching staff will be armed with when they go out and recruit over the next 3 months. You could have Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, John Heisman and Vince Lombardi on the sideline and that is a pretty tall mountain to scale.
All we can do now is hope for the best.
Dr Z - The ESPN crew, yeah, they made the game funny at times. I appreciate your positive take. Every little bit of light helps.
As for AJ Watts, it would be nice if his twitter bio correctly listed the name of the school he attends and plays for https://twitter.com/anthonyajwatts?lang=en
We cheer the Akron Blue and Gold,
We cheer as the colors unfold.
We pledge anew, we're all for you,
As the team goes crashing through,
Fight! Fight!
We cheer the Akron warriors bold,
For a fight that's a sight to behold,
So we stand up, and cheer and shout,
For the Akron Blue and Gold!I was OK with letting Bowden go. Thought he had taken the program as far as he was able . Was hoping bringing in a younger more energetic HC might get the program to the next level. That is being able to CONSISTENTLY compete with the best teams in the MAC. That hasn't happened almost 15 years. I am totally disappointed, as are others here with the apparent lack of progress in the performance on the field. It really gives the appearance that this staff is 'lost' right now. That is very, very troubling considering we are into November.
Whether Arth et. al can produce next season is a huge question. If not, as I and others have been at least suggesting, the football program may be in for a drastic, drastic overhaul. Not just talking about another new coach. With a new President who is painfully aware of the financial issues issues of the University and who is painfully aware that the Athletic Department has been and is a huge drain on those finances there may be sentiment to play at a level that will at least be less expensive to the University. 2020 may be a watershed year for major atheletics at the University.

There are no bigger wins than the 2005 MAC Championship game. But, the playoff games in 1976 are close. Makes me wonder if the program should drop back down at some point.

As unbelievable and amazing as the Northwestern win was, I just can't give it my vote for best Bowden win. It was just so fluky. I sound ungrateful of course, but I just didn't see it as being as impressive as these two:
Obviously the Potato Bowl win is probably the most meaningful and historic win in the history of the program (Damn you, Michigan). A trick play for a touchdown, flawless kicking game, a third string QB leading the team to 8 wins, all while doing it on the blue turf with Ohio's Pride in the stands. I regret not shelling out the cash for that trip.
But if I had one vote, I give it to the win over Ohio in 2017.
I have never left Infocision Stadium with a bigger smile on my face. I wasn't even in much disbelief, I was just so proud of the program. First win over them in a decade that all but locked up a trip to Detroit, and one of the first plays from scrimmage was a 70-yard QB run to put Ohio up 7-0. The two deep balls to Kwad, the pick by Featherstone that came out of nowhere, Ohio ran a philly special for a TD before it was the philly special. I couldn't believe my eyes and didn't think Akron would win until George picked off Rourke to start the fourth quarter. Then it was just a battle to hang on for dear life, and I believe Kato sealed it with a strong run to get a first down. I had a swagger about me for the entirety of the week and into next week because it hadn't been that good to be a Zips fan in 12 years.
Honorable mention: Toledo in 2013. People crying about the closing off of sections and it being cold and Black Friday seemed like a recipe for disaster. Instead, the Zips rallied for one of their best performances of the last 8 years to keep Matt Campbell's Rockets out of a bowl game. What a game. I thought the Zips would run away with the MAC East in 2014 after this one, and then they went on to beat Pitt and start 2-0 in the MAC, but we don't need to revisit hard times right now. We've got plenty to be miserable about LOL.
Did Kareem Hunt play? Or am I in the wrong decade?

After watching the UB game I am still not sure what this coaching staff wants to do with its personnel. They have decided to play freshmen at skill positions without apparently changing anything about the play calling on that side. They must realize by now that this team can't move the ball consistently doing what hey have been doing. The D is still a train wreck!. Little pass rush. Can't stop the run or pass consistently. This team does not have the personnel to play the defense or offense these coaches apparently want to play. If Arth thinks Gibson is his next QB, he better develop and O-line and run game cause that kid is going to be a statue.

Gotta have a big back who can run behind a competent O-line. I am still old enough to believe that a team in the MAC still needs a running game capable of getting 100 yards week in and week out. Used to drive me crazy how much they ran the ball in the 70's under Dennison. BUT,while I know this is not the '70's teams still have to be able to have a credible run threat no matter the QB. Makes life much easier for any O-line. Don't know if they have a RB on this roster but they need to get one.
