The difference in the game has been the same story all season - bad OL play, and a non-existent pass rush. Every game, I marvel at the time the opposing QB has to throw...and the size of the pocket he throws from...compared to that of the Zips .

On the season, we have 4 sacks for 17 yards. Our opponents - 31 sacks for 163 yards. That's amazing.

I liked Gibson's arm strength. I liked how, under duress,  he constantly looked down field, trying to make something happen. Like Loyal Zip said, he needs to protect the ball better. And he will.  For a true Freshman, running for his life, in his first start, he did a great job.

Just when you think we found a starting RB, he injures his shoulder after an 8 yard gain.

We convert on 33% of our 3rd downs. Our opponents are at 50%.

We've lost 10 fumbles. Our opponents have lost 2.

    Just tough to watch...

U have about summed it up! The offense looks lost. Not sure why they just don't line up with 2 backs, a TE and commit to running the ball. If nothing else it might keep the D off the field for a while. The O line is still awful. There is still no run game no matter who is toting the rock. Yep,no pass rush. U can't can't play that Tampa 2 stuff if your front can't rush the passer and your front can't stop the run. Exposes some weak DB's who can't cover nearly that long. Gibson MAY end up being a good thrower, but he can't run at all. He will need a competent running game to make him competent. No wins this year folks.. Hope its not another Ianello era all over again!

Disgraceful performance. No excuse to be this bad. The cupboard wasn’t left that bare & some personal decisions are head scratching.

This city and alumni deserve better. Basketball season can’t get here soon enough where I think the Zips will really surprise some people (in a positive direction)

I saw Chris Szabo at the game. Wonder what he is thinking right now?

Arth is in over his head, which is not his fault, he is a coach who was 9-13 in his ONLY D1 FOOTBALL EXPOSURE EVER at Chattanooga, yet Larry Williams hired him despite Arth having never recruited D1 Athletes.  Dating back to last year Arth has now not tasted a win in 350 days. 9 straight losses for D3 Boy at the D1 level.

Larry Williams is killing Akron Football and there needs to be a house cleaning at the top of the Athletics Program.  Do the right thing Gary Miller and make wholesale changes in Zip Athletics.

I wonder what the attitude of the new Prez is toward an athletic department that has been bleeding the University white financially for years. He may decide that Akron can no longer afford to try to compete at the D-1 level. 'Wholesale changes' may not just involve a new AD etc.

  4. Was at the game. Have been at every home game this season....so far. There are now some obvious patterns. The coaching staff appears not concerned about wins this season. They are playing an 'apparently' injured QB who can no longer make significant plays to help the team win. Missed a wide open receiver in the end zone in the first half. Throwing the ball into the ground on short outs. If he is hurting that badly then sit him. They seem to be running a high school level offense. Lee is not an every down running back, yet the staff keeps playing him. He is so small he gets swallowed up at the line.Reminds me of 'Metcalf up the middle'. The offensive line still can't run block. Riley is a HUGE liability at CB and opponents know they can go there for easy yards. The front 7 is still way below average.

If games were at least competitive that would be one thing.. They should be!

My concern is Arth is banking on 'his' recruits for a turnaround next season. May be. But,with a new Prez at Buchtel Hall who knows what his attitude is toward major money losing sports. The University is already in the hole financially. He may not want to tolerate that black hole of cash any longer.

No more wins on the schedule this season.

If Arth is wanting to preserve 'redshirts' we won't see any changes for at least another 2 or 3 weeks.

My last game will be Buffalo only because we promised our granddaughter that we would take her to her first live football game. After that I am done for the year. No season tix next year. We will sit in GA for half the price and the same seats on the East side.

He should be a three games and out.

This is a joke. Fire a coach who got to the MAC Championship and a bowl and replace him with a ZERO.

Remind me again how many career D1 wins he has.

Once again, I offer to take the job right now for $1000 a week

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE?

With all due respect, Bowden's team won the East Division one season. Got blown out in the MAC Champ game and the obligatory bowl game. The next season they had what 4 wins?

There were Akron teams in the late '90s and early 2000's that had .500 or better records but didn't get chosen for bowls. Probably because there were not as many.Don't have to defend Arth at this point. He is a big boy and knows how this stuff rolls.

Meh. It was a frustrating game. A big reason was all of the flags. My gawd they were calling everything and anything. Quite a few questionable calls, but when you're rebuilding, and playing a team like Troy, this will happen. Some of the penalties come from a lack of discipline, and if I don't see an improvement in those types of penalties, I'll be concerned with this staff.

I think a lot of fans underestimated Troy. And the impact Tom Arth's recruiting class (they're all freshmen!!!) has on the team. The players on the field are Bowden's Boys with a couple possible exceptions, and they sucked last year (which is why Bowden is no longer here).

So I'm not throwing TA under the bus just yet. It'll take a couple years to see how his recruiting classes pan out.

Well ya. Seeing as Ianello had how many wins his first year? And,Bowden had how many wins his first year? Who were the last two Akron coaches to have a winning season in their first years? If there is no significant improvement next season over this, then Arth will be a 3 year and out.

Anybody know how many sacks the Zips had today?

I'm pretty sure we have a winner @zippyfan34 and @blueandgold both guessed neither QB would throw for 290+ and the score difference.

@blueandgold guessed no sacks, and @zippyfan34 guessed 1-2, but I don't see a box score that indicates the total.

I remember Jest jumping on the QB, not sure they counted it as a sack?

Akron credited with 1 sack. OH BOY! Akron was so bad Troy didn't need to pass. OR!? they didn't need to run?

  8. Look fans. This will be no worse than a Bowden or Ianello first season. Was at the game early. Nothing has changed with the O-line,the run game or the pass rush. All garbage. my guess is but only a guess is that Arth will let Kelley start at QB sometime real soon. Had him in early today. Nelson is not the QB of the future here. Neither is Kelley but Arth is not likely to burn a red shirt on a QB he recruited this season. That said, there are way too many 'coaching' issues rearing their ugly heads for the 4th game of the season. Until they come up with a big RB,a consistent pass rush and some people who can actually play the O-line, as Mountain once said,'travellin' in the dark, can't see a thing'.

Who do they beat this year? Any fearless forecasts?

I heard they wanted to let him go after 2017 season but he backed into the MAC Championship game & they felt like they couldn’t fire after that but I understand the coaches lost the team & the players weren’t respecting coaches & talking back

I’ve said before the South Carolina game was done to make up the other half of Nebraska game so no lost of income & the other half covered Arth’s & Bowden’s buyouts, was a great pick up, just had to be hard to coach for Bowden as he had to know

He is getting paid. No tears here!

  10. It seems pretty apparent that the AD wanted to go with younger coaches hoping for a better long term return than SUB .500. OK!  Then lets not compare b.ball and football. Two completely different situations. I am not going to assume that Arth and Co. are going to win a MAC champeenship. But I hope so! I didn't assume JD and Co. were going to win a MAC. NONE OF U DID! If u haven't figured it out by now, this is the sports life at U of A.. If U do not like it there needs to be a more drastic solution. Figure out what it is!

See U at the game on Saturday! Right?!

I think its unlikely that Arth will change his offensive scheme.  However, he can adjust formations and continue to look for the best players at each position.  Running the ball is about being able to move people and using formations within your system to make it easier.   I believe Arth is still figuring it out at this level of competition.  He will need to be creative and use misdirection to create favorable matchups.  It will be a rough season for sure but we should just be looking for improvement from game to game and not necessarily victories right now.  Wins will come eventually as long as we continue to improve.

I believe that coaches can put players in better positions to be successful. In this case stop having Nelson throwing the ball 40 times/game. In practice get the O-line working on the run instead of pass 'protection'. If you don't emphasize the run in practice you can,t do it in a game against good teams.

I do want to see what this team looks like in November as opposed to now.

  12. Troy MAY be better than UAB. Way too much talent for Akron to win the game outright. The best Sunbelt teams play at a higher level than most teams in the MAC. They have people coming back from last season. The new coach was there last season. Unfortunately unless something drastic happens and the lights come on for the Offense and defensive backfield the best that can happen is a 'moral' victory for Akron. Hopefully,Arth has a plan for next season. Whatever the problems with the O-line,and they are significant, I think Arth will take a hard look at another QB during the rest of the season. Will be at the game at least for a while.

Welcome @Zippyroo, I don’t know what the line depth is like but you are dead on that the right side of the line is struggling, that and defensive backs is definitely our biggest areas of concern

The O-line had to be a huge concern even before the season started. Thought the DB's would be a little more adequate though. If the lack of a run game is all about the O-line its been a problem for several seasons prior to this one however. This isn't just about Arth and Co. This goes back a while. Since what they are doing isn't working, how about going to a more 'power run' orientation. Use two backs. They did show a little I-formation a few times. Tighten up the formations and make the defenses crowd the line. Use the pass to make them respect the run. Might help Nelson and the Akron D.

  14. Troy is an amazing program at that level. They made what seemed to be an almost seemless transition to D1. They recruit really good athletes. They are always competitive in the Sunbelt where the caliber of athlete is generally better than the MAC. They have returning QB's. They have a runnig back who gained over 1,000 yards last season. The defense was in the top 3 in the Sunbelt. It has looks like 6 returning starters. Maybe not quite as good as UAB but looks pretty darn close. Beat a big 10 team last season. Handled a good Buffalo team in a bowl.

Another tough one for the ZIPS.
