The positives out of the day -

    • Beautiful weather! How often does that happen at a Zips home football game?
    • Burkhart was great. To be honest, he had the type of game I'd have predicted from Boogie.  It will be interesting to see if he's a 1-hit wonder, or he can back it up. He played well at Illinois, so I'm guessing he's going to have a nice season.
    • While UAB isn't bucking for a New Year's Day bowl this year, they're not bad. Their QB was accurate. Their o-line gave him pocket time that Kato could only dream of having, It's amazing how good your passing game can be if you have all day to throw.
    • UAB's D-line had good size.
    • UAB drew 39,000 fans for their hope opener, and is building a $175 million dollar stadium. While Joe Akron isn't too familiar with them, they're a solid program. Even in what might be considered a down year.
    • Kato never had all day to throw. He barely had 2 seconds from the snap to get rid of the ball. It's unbelievable that he could throw for over 300 yards under those circumstances.
    • The Zips running game again disappointed. But the backs never had a gap to hit. Last season you could chalk up the Zips running issues to an unimaginative scheme. We tried a variety of different looks against UAB and nothing worked.
    • Ineffective pass and run blocking gives you what we saw on Saturday. The Blazer D-line just pushed the Zips back and collapsed the pocket every time. Conversely, our D-line was easily fended off.
    • Hope Council isn't hurt too bad. He returned to the sideline sans any air cast or crutches, so it seems like a minor ding.
    • Keyondre White was on the sideline. Must be injured?
    • Is the solution to Kato buying time to throw rolling him out? Seems like the obvious choice. It's either that, or the o-line needs to make some huge strides over the next couple weeks.
    • Does Andre Williams get a chance to return some kicks? Hopefully the staff is just being cautious in bringing him back from his long layoff. His snap count needs to increase.
    • Alvin Davis' name is not being called enough on the PA system. I realize the numbers game somewhat forces the staff's hand to play him at the corner (we have a little depth at safety, but none at CB), but we can't continue to get burnt deep. I would love to see Davis back at safety where he can make a bigger impact on the game.
    • Tutu sat out 2018 as a gray shirt, so he deserves some patience as he acclimates to the college game. Hope he's a quick learner.
    • I saw Wieland punt in HS and he was awesome. I don't know whether it's jitters...the 2 year layoff from playing...problems adjusting to the punt-on-the-run rugby-style kick...but he's gotta get it together. I never saw Fitchen kick in HS, but he's gotta get it together too. I've never seen such problems as the Zips have kicking the ball...or on special teams in general.
    • There were bright spots Saturday - Lako and Bubba played well. Riley showed some resilience after getting off to a rough start. Jest had a great game. Scippio found the endzone for his first college TD. I thought we tackled well, and fought hard to the end. Kato is a gamer.
    • Arth seems to me to be first and foremost a teacher. A very hands-on teacher. He now has 8 quarters of game film to start addressing our shortcomings. We'll see what he can do.
    • To paraphrase Rick Pitino..."Andy Alleman ain't walking through that door...Brent Biggs ain't walking through that door...Rodney Coe and Jatavis Brown aren't walking through that door...".  We are who we are...a team coming off a 4-8 season that lost 90% of it's defense from 2018. The final two 2017 games prior to the 4-8 season, we were down 35-0 to Toledo, and lost 50 - 3 to FAU. So anyone writing off Arth after losing to teams that were flat-out better than these rebuilding Zips...and funded beyond the Zips wildest imagination...should keep "I told you so's" to themselves. It just clutters the board.

    Go Zips. Beat the Chipps!

Fully agree that Davis should move back to the back end. He is a 'security blanket' when he is back there. He knows how to play back there. And, yes Illinois and UAB had far superior athletes at almost every position. Bigger, faster. Thats the difference between Conference USA and most of the MAC. Concentrate on the MAC! Arth gets the same amount of time as the others before him. (I'll assume it won't be as bad as Ianello). CMU game is really important.

  2. This game will be a barometer about what the rest of the season may look like for Akron in the MAC. A loss against another team with a new coaching staff and apparently in a rebuilding mode would indicate that the Zips are going to have a tough time with most of the rest of their schedule.

You have to think though with a very experienced HC in McElwain and Charlie as the OC their offense might be a little more dynamic than expected.

The mantra is the same this week. Finally find SOME sort of a consistent run game. No TO's Kato. No big plays behind Akron's secondary this week. Get ahead early by running the ball and using the short passing game. Keep CMU's defense on the field. That said,I have no idea what to expect from Akron in this game.

Well, according to the Saragrin computer rankings Akron is the second worst team in the FBS. Worst - UMASS.

Maybe we should get Dayton from the FCS on the schedule - they come in at #204.

Or... maybe we should consider moving back to 1-AA or D2? Just sayin'.

As long as we're still talking Dennison, it is worthwhile to note he had a career winning record (13-9) against MAC teams when we weren't even at the same level. Some of them were crummy MAC teams, but MAC nonetheless. Plus he beat Ball State when they were MAC champs in 1976. He should have had a chance at D1. Faust sure wasn't successful.

    You bet!

Dennison did coach us as 1-AA in the OVC days 1980-85.

You are right. Thanks for the catch. The site I looked at started with Faust. Dennison coached when Akron was in the Mid Continent!!? 1978-1979-They went 12-10 under Dennison. From 1980-1985 they were in the OVC. During those 6 seasons Dennison went-3-7-1;5-5;6-5;8-3;4-7;8-4.   They went to the tournament in 1985.

Dennison was fired after the 1985 season. Imagine that!

Where are you inferring that? The program has stunk for the 30+ years that its been in FBS and that includes the 7 years that Bowden coached it. If you want to go ahead and say that Bowden was the best coach in those 30 years that's fine and I won't argue that point, but that's like calling someone the tallest midget. The guy went 35-52 overall and 23-33 in MAC play. He's not gods gift to the Akron football program like some people are trying to make him out to be.

I went back on a website not affiliated with Akron to get the historical win totals of the last 3 Akro HC's. They would be Bowden,Brookhart and Owens. Since Brookhart was here 6 seasons I took the final 6 season win totals for each coach Bowden-34(I left out Bowden's 1-11 record his first season. If I had started counting 6 seasons there he had I believe 31 wins);  Brookhart-30 and Owens -32. Obviously Owens was the longest tenured of the 3. Shoot, Owens got fired after going 7-5 I believe. But,point is throw a blanket over those numbers! None of these coaches have put up significantly more wins than the others. Somebody mentioned this elsewhere, the program 'is what it is' now and what it has been for years. There have been all sorts of on and off the field factors for that.

By the way,I didn't go back to check Jim Dennison's record when Akron was D2. But I would guess in 6 seasons it was better than these numbers. Always thought he should have gotten a shot to take the program at least to 1-AA but alas we will never know what might have been.

That was a fire Arth moment.  Why?  Why? 4th and 1...throw it to Lee 5 yards behind line of scrimmage.  What could go wrong?

That UAB coach is a lot like that Cherry Bowl coach...hes going to run up the score on Akron

Isn't Zagorski the OC also? Was he calling plays too? Would like to know because there were a couple of critical situations where the calls seemed puzzling. But,some of that is due to the poor O-line play and apparent lack of a 'big' back who can grind out a couple of yards when needed. Oh where is Grice when you need him?

And Here's the question that matters: do you think that Tom Arth, with his illustrious career of coaching D-III John Carrol for a handful of years and two years of coaching at FCS Chattanooga to a 9-13 record; can out recruit Terry Bowden (who has a 25-year coaching history with connections to Florida...whom's father is a legendary College Football coach).  And that's not even mentioning transfers...

I'd like to smoke WHATEVER it is everyone else is smoking who believes that Tom Arth will be able to put together a BETTER team talent wise than Terry Bowden.  It doesn't make any, remote, logical sense.  This isn't to say the Bowden teams were packed with talent...I just find it extremely hard to believe that a coach from John Carroll will be able to out recruit a Bowden.

I guess we will find out in a couple of years won't we?

  9. Maybe we should have brought back J.D. Brookhart. He was the only coach who won a MAC champeenship!?  What say yee?

I was at the game. After the first Akron drive I saw a CUSA  team that had far better athletes pretty much across the board. UAB gets the kids that don't go to Alabama,Florida,Auburn etc.

MAC schools for the most part don't get anywhere near that level of athlete across the board. Also, please remember that the vast majority of players on this team were recruited by the Bowden regime. So those guys couldn't compete with the UAB guys. Those guys were a 4-8 team last year.

That said I saw some poor play and questionable decisions from the coaches today. It mystifies me how Akron could be playing a "Tampa Two' D and have UAB receivers running behind the safeties for 4 TD's. It mystified me when on 4th and 1 in UAB territory the play call was a run sweep with the smallest player on the field when the play hadn't worked before.

What doesn't mystify me is that Akron still has no run game because they haven't had one to speak of for several years. It doesn't mystify me that Kato Nelson is still  inconsistent to the point of frustration at times. By the way UAB played a lot of back ups in the second half.

Bowden had how many yrears to produce one bowl win and one division win and a sub .500 record? Arth and his crew get some time to see if they can build on what was already here.

I think some fans have the mistaken idea that this program is going to be much more at the D1 level than it has been historically. I would just ask them to look back at what this program has been since it went full D1. An'd start thinking about the alternatives.

  10. Some of the media were speculating that because of all the different personnel Arth was playing he was kinda treating it like an NFL pre-season game. Who the hell knows. Maybe he has the same attitude as some of the rest  that the 'sacrifice' games are only good for making money and not a whole lot else for MAC teams. Only have to look back to last season. Anyway, Nelson better improve quickly or the new regime will have him holding a clipboard in a few weeks. Arth and staff will try to develop its own players with an eye to the next couple of seasons.

They will take advantage of the '4 game redshirt rule'.

Andre Williams is very ready and willing to help this team. Has not screwed up. Why has Coach Arth decided not to use him? Not his recruit? Not from Ohio? Impact Player, returning receiver with the better Stats of last season. I hope someone can get these answers.

Interesting. Not sure if that would have made a difference today unfortunately. Time to give the back-up QB some PT?

  12. No I am not a 'troll'. Sorry I can't respond to the poll. But, think Illinois will win comfortably. Probably 10+ points. They do have a good run game. Even if their QB is questionable, they can still try to keep Akron's D on the field and wear them down. They still have Big 10 size. Akron stays in the game if Arth has been able to develop some sort of a run game and Kato can complete 60%+ of his passes. Can''t turn the ball over to a mediocre team. Have to make their O work. One advantage Akron might have is that apparently Lovie Smith still runs a lot of his 2-deep coverage in a zone. Arth has certainly seen that in his time in the NFL. Maybe some passes to TE's and RB's could get the O going. Will be interesting to see what difference there will be this season.

  13. I realize that this topic was originally about Bowden's next job or whatever. It was not originally about the University considering options to its current sports affiliations. But, with Bowden still apparently being paid by the University and the Interim Prez here talking about having to make cuts while trying to increase revenues from athletics, any significant amounts of money being paid to anyone who is not providing direct services to the University is significant. This is not about Bowden personally. The Interim Prez did not specifically mention changing affiliations, true. But,when he says we need to make cuts while increasing athletic revenues very significantly, one wonders specifically, where the increased revenues will  come from when it has been an issue for years. And,where to the cuts come from. The University is trying to reduce the amount of 'student fees'which go to directly supporting athletics. The burden is being placed on academics. I would posit that the majority of students at the University have limited or know interest in varsity sports. We see that from attendance among other things. So how does the University support athletics at current levels?

  14. According to reports, Akron may be contemplating ways to reduce the athletic department  budget. Apparently want to finally stop milking student fees to pay for non-profitable sports programs. HERE,HERE if that is true! Problem is there will not be any significant bump in ticket sales revenue. That horse left the barn years and years ago. What do they do? Maybe its what some of us have been suggesting for years. Drop to I-AA or D-II if you want to keep varsity sports. But,No more MAC: all of your current coaches will leave. Read carefully what IP Green said. See how you interpret.

As an aside,Bowden is insignificant here now. He is a milker who doesn't need this money at this point. Please move on Mr. Bowden.

  15. Some things stood out in the 2 hours I was there. Arth has a hell of a lot of energy! Is in the middle of everything and not just standing around watching. The players or at least most of them pick up on that energy. I love to see a coach especially under the circumstances here who is doing that. The practice is fast paced. Not a bunch of guys standing around watching a lot of

11/11 scrimmage. Arth is going to weed out the guys who don't want to do the conditioning now not later. Obviously they are still working on basics and the coaches want to get reps in on basics now. Noticed there are a lot of O-linemen on the current roster. Significant number are redshirt Frosh and Sophs. There will be more in August. Like that. O-line will make everybody

better in the long run. The WR's looked 'fast'. DB's were doing a lot of grabbing in drills and scrimmage. Nelson looks a little thicker arm looks strong. Want to see if Arth can coach him up to make better and quicker decisions. Liked the regular use of the TE and wing back.  Arth has a nice assortment of QB's to work with. Shields caught my eye for some reason. Obviously a couple of them won't be in the mix.

Hard to tell a lot from the scrimmages. The Offense looked good but they were up against what may be right now a suspect front 7. Looks like the D was 3 down  and moving a stand up from side to side depending on the field position and circumstances. Lako did stand out.

Just liked the energy and pace this coaching staff is trying to instill.

Maybe I'm being a bit of a Homer here but I think we should be a contender right away.  Coaching and Motivation were 90% of our problem last year. If Arth is worth a lick at all then he should have success with this group.

Nelson the O MVP,interesting. He may very well be the starter. Not completely convinced of that with a new sheriff in town. Lets see.

Fun little exercise for the offseason as we head into yet another first season under a new regime.

    My rankings:

    1. Terry Bowden - Like my #2 choice, inherited an absolute disaster, turned it around, and was let go a year too soon.  Was able to bring together a stellar defensive staff and reestablish a steady stream of NFL prospects similar to the late Owens and early Brookhart years. Only coach to take the Zips to two bowl games.  I think a couple more years at the helm could've allowed him to establish our program as a MAC powerhouse.

    2. Lee Owens-  I'm not sure some people realize how bad things were when Owens took over in 1995.  It took him a bit to right the ship and make the team competitive, but given the terrible facilities and administrative support he was dealt, the fact that he was able to develop as much talent as he was and have some winning seasons was nearly a miracle. 2003 should've been a banner year, but the ball bounced the wrong way in three games that year and the team could've very easily been 10-2 with an upset over powerhouse Wisconsin. Defense was the achilles heel of his later teams. It's my firm belief that had his staff remained in place a MAC Championship would've been won in 2004 and 2005.  Owens has been a consistent success in everyother head coaching position he's ever held, albeit at lower levels.

    3. JD Brookhart- Like my #4 choice, inherited a very good team and shiny brand-spanking new facilities and support that his predecessors never had.  Must receive credit for winning the school's only MAC Championship, but did so with a team full of his predecessor's recruits.  Was finally able to solve some of the team's defensive woes, but despite his background never developed a high powered offensive attack.  He swung for the fences in recruiting and took too many chances on high risk/high reward guys that never panned out.

    4. Gerry Faust- Led an exciting transition to FBS (1-A at that time) but his later years were an unmitigated disaster.  Discipline and talent were complete bottom of the barrell in 1-A by the time he was fired. Still love seeing him around the Zips program after all these years though.

    5. Rob Ianello- This needs no explanation.

The best FBS coaches. Glad you limited it to FBS because those are not the best coaches who have been at Akron. Not gonna numerically rank 'em. But, Owens RECRUITED some really good talent. Hixon,Blackburn, Fry,Smith and more. Couldn't turn it in to a MAC Championship. Brookhart, took that talent, added some of his and won a MAC Championship. Actually I think the weakness in those 2006 and 2007 teams was defense. AND,Brookhart admitted it himself that he brought in some kids,David Harvey just one who were not college students but self centered athletes. Don't have a lot of love for Faust. Always thought Dennison should have at least been given a shot. But,the AD at the time thought he was smarter than everyone else. IMHO,that set this program back far more than fans realize.

    Thank goodness thats over now.
