  1. Do not try to pin this on a rookie QB. This is simply another  FAILURE of  Bowden/ Milwee to 1) develop any type of running game and 2) their inability to devise a game plan for an inexperienced QB on the road. Stop blabbering about the back up to the back up. When Bowden gets EMBARASSED by EMU its my hope that the AD takes a real hard look at what has not been accomplished in 7 seasons.

I like the addition of UConn for football only with the requirement that they schedule significant OOC games with MAC teams in other sports. This is a solid academic school with a good athletic brand name...a definite step up from UMass. Talk about helping MAC OOC scheduling and RPI...

Make them play 4 OOC games against top MAC men's and women's basketball, and rope them in for an ongoing home-home series with top MAC men's and women's soccer teams. Then, seal the deal.

UConn WINS national championships in B.ball. Just like all the other big boys they are gonna refuse to give up a home date with all that revenue to play in a MAC B.ball venue. Might be better to extract a BIG guarantee from UConn in order to have MAC teams play early games there. Would pad the MAC bank accounts and elevate the RPI even with losses.

It only makes sense if we bring in another team to make it fourteen. UMass is the obvious choice, but getting Army would be a coup.

Trying to figure out why Army would even consider that. Thats a move down for them is it not? They can already go to bowl games. And, they play for the Commander in Chief trophy with the other two service academies. They get plenty of exposure already don't they?

Somewhat what Dr. Z is getting at, if Kato is good to go, I have to imagine he is nowhere near as mobile as he normally is. Hopefully his accuracy is on point, and the OC calls plays that put him in a position to succeed. The offense likely shouldn't be the same, even if he does play. To the contrary, if he isn't able to play/plays but ends up being ineffective, at least we have had 9-10 days to prep and Ramart should have gotten plenty of reps, so more prepared than last week.

I predict a close game either way. Hopefully we can pull something out of our hat. I think a bowl game is important for this program.

Think what's important is that Bowden and Co. show they can beat some quality MAC teams on more than hoping they 'can pull something out' all the time to do it. Every team has injuries or other maladies(suspensions etc) to key players every year. Do the Zips win the division last year if Nelson doesn't play. This group has a chance,no matter who is at QB to show that the program is actually moving forward. Win the last three, good indication it is because they have to beat at least a couple of good teams to close it out. Lets see what happens when ALL the votes are counted.

But, as was said earlier this week Nelson would have to make one heck of a recovery to be effective this week. Ramart is a different type  of QB. Wonder if he returns next year if he thinks he might not play?

  5. Unfortunately for Akron EMU is probably the better team overall. They will have immediate motivation for their 6th win. They have beaten quality teams and played quality teams close in losses. Who knows who the Zips' QB will be. But, IF Nelson actually has a high ankle, he will not be anywhere close t 100% at this point. Those injuries are painful and cause instability. Mobility is greatly reduced as is the confidence to make normal maneuvers. He is not a pocket passer. He has to move to be effective. EMU appears to have at least a solid defense.

Who knows what Ramart might do?

C'mon Doc, a "good chance"?  Maybe a chance.  EMU didn't look that much worse yesterday than we did against CMU, and they certainly looked better against Buffalo and NIU than we did.  And any word yet on the status of KN?  Won't that effect our chances?  Just sayin'...maybe I missed something watching them yesterday.

EMU has won 5. They beat Purdue and Toledo. Their loses were close maybe save for the Army game but that certainly was not a blowout. They have played. some good teams tough and beaten a couple of quality teams. Hope I'm wrong but on the road with a team that can become bowl eligible, finally. EMU is going to be real excited. Tough go for the Zips even if a hobbling KN plays.

  7. So this likely means money,no bowl.  Can't now assume Zips are LIKELY to win a game other than BG. Suppose they can try to treat the SC game as their 'bowl' game. Will be interesting to see what happens post season if they only win 5. Guess it depends on where Williams is at with this bunch. John Green sure as hell isn't going to stick his fingers in this.

Kato played well and offense scored some points.  Defense made good adjustments and played hard.  Losing Kato hurt and hopefully he is OK.  The difference was the physical play of NIU.  NIU is good.

Yes they are. They had 300 yards on the ground. Zips slowed them down a little but when you give almost 170 to one RB and 300 total your defense got handled. Funny how that NIU safety on the blocked PAT maybe didn't seem like much. But when they had 'chased points' then finally had a chance to tie, instead they are still down by 3...ouch!

How ironic that KN was having one of his best nights against a quality defense and the Zips put up some points but came up short. They got dealt a tough hand.

Sideline throws aren't "progressed" to. They are somewhat quick hitters once the receiver hits the top of their route and breaks back. Point and case is the pick six; Ramart instantly went to that guy, staring him down in the process. Typically if a sideline throw is broken, there is not a progression, but rather a throw away over the receiver's head and out of bounds. Now, if he read the defense prior to the snap and saw that the sideline route was going to be the best option, to your point that is on Ramart. However, I would still argue in favor of making it simpler on Ramart, and not putting him through those types of decisions in that situation.

My point is it's one of the most difficult throws a QB has to make, and should not have been called - especially as often - as it was tonight once Ramart came in. Instead, they should have stuck with the slants over the middle like they did on the touchdown throw, or screens.

Last couple of games the middle of the field seems to have been open for the passing.Did they throw to a 'tight end' last night in the middle? Can't recall. Too bad that might have been a better option especially after Nelson went down.

  10. 10 hours ago, zippy5 said:

Agree to disagree. This wasn't a quick hitter to the sideline. The play was a rollout to get him some time with a primary read over the middle and the next option was sideline, and obviously last resort take off or throw it into the stands.

In any case I think we'd all agree that he wasn't put into the greatest of spots, but the playbook is a little limited down two possessions with not much time left.

Unfortunately there was nothing open on this play. NIU had the deeper route covered. And,they were all over the sideline pattern. Hopefully, next time he pulls it down and runs or throws it to Milwee on the sideline(lol).

And I don’t even think he as all that good of a passer. He’s big, strong, and mobile. They’ve put a team around him and play to his strengths but I wasn’t all that impressed seeing him in person other than tall dudes aren’t supposed to be that nifty.

Did you check out the UB/MU game last night?

The thing I do not understand about this team with Bowden is that we played our best football early in the season.  This team looked good against Northwestern and against Iowa State.  Two good teams.  We dominated the first quarter against Miami where they did not have a first down.  We moved the ball but gave up an early fumble.  Miami then went hurry up and our defense floundered giving up 5 or 6  third down plays.  After that first quarter in the Miami game our football team has been mediocre at best.  The last 2 games we won but can anyone say they enjoyed watching these games?  (Except for some spectacular runs by Kato and some great defensive stops)

Last year we were big underdogs against Western Michigan and after a day rain delay we pulled out an upset.  I just wonder if there is anyway this team can regroup and play some good football, especially on the offensive side.  I would really like to see Kato get some easy passes to his backs coming out of the backfield.  I would like to see Bowden do something different on offense to get this team to where it was early in the season.

    You are not alone.

  13. I was looking at the NIU MAC stats yesterday. Two things jumped out. Their QB and this guy. Sutton Smith is a sack/tackle machine. With the lets say inconsistent play of the Zips O-line Bowden/Milwee better not have KN holding on to the ball or trying to run around behind the line. He might not make the end of the game. If NIU place press on the WR's they better figure a way to get the ball to a Tight end behind the backers. Can the Zips even run on these guys?  Score early if possible and hope the defense can control the game.

Do we really need a 12th game?  We have 4 games in NIU, EMU, BGSU, & Ohio to get 2 victories.  If we can’t get 2 than we don’t deserve a bowl & who we going to find FBS we could beat?  And, what state of mind would the players be in if they had another game December 1st that isn’t MACC?  I think we can get 2 to be 6-5 & go to the Bahamas Bowl (personal preference)

Ya, lets stop with the gyrations. If they have to 'drop down' and play a second FCS(1-AA) team just to TRY to get a bowl bid what message does that send about the progress of the program or lack thereof? What message does it send to the players? The fans? You can not assume a win at Nebraska. Hope but not assume. Lets win at least 2 of the last 4. That means you have to beat at least one more quality team,NIU,OU or EMU. Thats legit. Walk in the front door.

Yeah doesn't make much sense to me

If they had not lost their first two MAC games probably wouldn't be worried about this. But,unless they play far better on offense than we have seen the last three weeks won't matter anyway. Besides, there would be no guarantee that a 6 win Akron team would be invited to a bowl game.

Try to look at the glass half full. We forgot about Zips beating Northwestern who beat Wisconsin yesterday. Bowden is a pretty loyal guy. I don't see him getting rid of Milwee. The MAC is a pretty good conference this year. E .Michigan and Miami are both decent programs now. E Michigan beat Purdue earlier in the season and Purdue taking out the OSU a weeks ago.

I remember when JD Brookhart was hired in 2004 after Lee Owens actually had a winning season in 2003(I believe). JD took what was left of Owen's bunch(some of whom were really good, without Charley Frye) and added some solid pieces and managed somehow to win a MAC championship in 2005. A bunch of us were really excited about 2006. Some quality was returning and JD added what appeared to be some solid recruits(had a freshman all America). In 2006 they went to NC State and beat Chuck's boys if memory serves. But,that season while competitive never panned out. '07,'08 and '09 were disappointments also. They did go up to Syracuse one year and beat them. If they had beaten UB in the last game at the Rubber Bowl in '08 they may have won the division again. '09 even with the new stadium wasn't good. JD was gone. 6 years! Point being that some coaches have the ability to get a program to a certain level then things stall. We will know at the end of this season if that's where this program is at now.

You mistake whining for asking for a better product. Do you go to the games? Have you seen the quality of players we are recruiting and how they are being misused? PJ Fleck was 1-11 his first year at WMU. By his third year he had them in a major bowl. Coaching matters and coaching has to be held accountable. Do you really think we should rejoice when we beat a Northwestern and then lose to a poor Miami? We struggle against inferior Kent and CMU while being destroyed by Buffalo. After 7 years I expect better. Let's stop making excuses for poor performance. If Lance Leipold (sp ?) at Buffalo can build a juggernaut in three years we can do it at Akron in seven with better facilities, recruiting base and support. It's not whining to expect quality in a program.

I think what is frustrating is that this program has made progress since Bowden took over. Shoot, where do you go from 1-11? That's history. But,at least some fans see that some of the same things that were happening in years 2,3 etc. are continuing to occur. That is especially true on the offensive side of the ball. The lack of consistency, the weak play of the offensive lines, the inability to consistently run the ball, the seeming inability to really develop a top notch QB like we have seen at other MAC schools, the lack of player discipline during the games and what many fans who have actually been attending a large number of games over the years see as a maddening inability to develop coherent offensive game plans. Make no mistake, without some of the really good defensive play that we have seen here over the past several years, this program would not have been in a position to go to bowl games or to a MAC championship game by relying on the offense.  And yes, when we see over the years the consistent winners at NIU,WMU,Toledo,OU and now a program at UB that has been quickly turned around, fans wonder why not at Akron. Nobody expects a MAC champ every season. But,what they want to see is the ability of this program to play competitively against those top quality teams every year.

Imagine how good we would be with an actual offense... This defense is fantastic.

They have to go away from Kato. I have no idea what the justification is behind playing him over Ramart. On top of that, Milwee does a great job of magnifying Kato's flaws with atrocious play calls, including down-the-sideline throws that require pinpoint accuracy, which Kato doesn't have. Why we don't throw over the middle more is beyond me.

I'm with a previous poster - Bowden either gets rid of Milwee, or they go together.

Its odd to me that two of the most wide open routes of the day were to an 'alleged' tight end/H-back type in the middle of the field. The first one he just completely muffed. The 'hands of stone' syndrome. Luckily he more or less surrounded the second one for a TD. Point is not to demean that player. It is not his fault he is being used incorrectly. Point is why doesn't the Bowden/Milwee gang get a tight end on the field who can catch? Then use him. For a guy like Nelson who is not accurate, a TE in the middle of the field can be a real weapon. Start throwing some 10-20 yarders behind the LB's and in front of the safeties you loosen up the line of scrimmage a little and get the safeties into coverage in the middle of the field. More options running and passing. Come on, this is not rocket science! Or,is it?
