  1. Since the conference season is over, thought it would be interesting to see how the Zips stacked up in some categories. Again, these are CONFERENCE stats only from the MAC site.

    Offensively: Total offense: #8 overall/Passing O- #9 overall/ Rushing O-#12(last) overall/Scoring O-#11 overall/Passing Efficiency-#11 overall/Kato Nelson had a pass completion % of 51.6-last in the MAC(9 TD's/6 INT's)/First Downs-#12(last).

    Defensively: Total D-#8/Passing D-#4/Rush D-#10/Turnover Margin-#12(last)(-9)/Sacks-For-16/Against-24/Interceptions-#12(last)/Lako was 3rd in Total Tackles/Alvin Davis-12th/Gilbert-22nd/Tackles for Loss-Jamal Davis-#3.

If I have made any errors please advise. Again I saw these on the MAC website.

Given the numbers its fairly easy to see why there were only 2 conference wins.

I think the win over Northwestern set up unrealistic expectations. I never thought we would be that competitive this year. We were picked to finish fourth in the MAC. Most other people are not really surprised by the results. The offense has gone through a rebuilding season and the QB was injured as things started coming together. That happens. Why are people so shocked and dismayed.

You could probably put together a one and done championship team with a coach without scruples and he would be gone the next year. Is that what you want? Ir would you rather build a perennial contender? We are pretty close to being that perennial co te der.

Frank Solich has never won a MAC championship. Would you fire him, too?

I'll take Solich tomorrow! Can you get him here?

Frank wins about 70% of his MAC games. Bowden has won about 40%. You're trying to compare apples to oranges again.

Akron was projected to finish 4th in the MAC East because this staff has failed to recruit and develop talent.

    Especially the development aspect.

Solich did not take over the worst program in Div. 1.

Maybe he did, maybe he did not.  A lot of people are claiming Bowden tookover the worst program in the MAC in 2012.  Maybe he did maybe he did not. I'll admit it wasn't good. I doubt if it was the worst program' in Division I however. That would cover a whole lot of really bad programs. But look at Solich's record. Only 2 sub .500 seasons since he took over. Again, when you want to compare yourself to the lowest common denominator you will look 'OK'. But,you will never look good against the best. That train claiming taking over the so called worst program

left the station 4 years ago.

I don’t think that is the personnel’s problem,  just hear me out, every time a microphone is stuck in Bowden’s face all he talks about is we have to establish the running game.  We have no running game & are always trying to establish the running game & keep the game close & playing good defense.  Every time the offense has played well minus Morgan State we fell behind & opened the offense up.  The offense does pretty well when we are slinging it around & not being so dam conservative

As I have said many times here previously,Bowden mouths about running the ball but never has done anything to develop a CONSISTENT running game. So when could we expect to see that?

One game against a B10 school does not make season, nor does OSU vs. Maryland.  Okay Mr. I Watch So Much Football expert, did you not watch Buffalo kick our D’s Butt?  Miami? A pathetic BGSU?  You are blind if you think this D even is in the top half of the MAC.  They just gave up over 200 yards i the first half for cripes sake, once again, I’m not blaming them, just trying to say those who think this D is stellar, may be over stating it.  A “really good” D makes stops even when the offense is struggling, and we don’t even hit the .500 mark in that category.  They’re all we have, so we tend to give them a pass, but they don’t make the big stop when they need to.  Watch the replay of the Buffalo game, the Miami game, the Northern Illinois game, the Bowling Green game, the. Tell me how many meaningful stops they made.

Earlier in the season I tended to think the D was playing pretty well what with the NW game. I know they have had some injuries. But, even with the pathetic offense hanging them out they give up too many big plays and can't get off the field. Linebacker play is not nearly as strong now. UG seems to disappear at times. They manage some sacks but again are way too vulnerable to the run. The D-line hasn't been all that good all season. Next year could be even worse on that side of the ball with graduations.

Not if he makes a change at OC and improves recruiting.  I'm not anti-Bowden.  I just think changes need to be made.  He's winning about 40% of his games and if you take away the D-IAA schools, he wins about 35% of his games.  The main problem I have is the high number of games, especially late in the season, where we can't even complete with middle of the road schools.  Are you honestly satisfied with the state of the program?

IMHO I doubt Bowden would be happy with an OC who was 'forced' on him. HC's want to pick their on staff. I feel if Bowden was that unhappy with Milwee he would have made the change already.

Totally agree with your assessment of the wins and losses.

I believe the upcoming games at OU and South Carolina will be the final of Bowden's tenure at Akron. If Williams can get Terry to move on from Milwee, then maybe we'll only be looking for someone new to run the offense. Maybe there's even some changes that can be made at the position level, I'm not sure. I think we can all agree there need to be some changes though.

I've listed a couple of candidates I feel are reasonable for head coach. I'm not too sure about coordinator candidates, so I didn't list any names because that is a much different hire.

Vince Kehres, HC at Mount Union--80-4 with a couple titles. Not as accomplished as Leipold was at Whitewater, but you can see what winning culture has brought to a former football wasteland at UB.

Scot Loeffler, OC/QB coach at Boston College--Local guy and a pretty good offensive mind. He's been around a lot of success and been instrumental in some nice offenses. He's had success in the MAC as well.

Matt Canada, Interim HC/OC/QB coach at Maryland--I wouldn't be surprised if Maryland kept him because he's done pretty well with the difficult hand he was dealt this year. He's been around success in the MAC and is more than qualified. I suspect he'll get looks at much bigger jobs though.

Luke Getsy, OC at Mississippi State--Doesn't really need any explaining. I think this hire would get a lot of people fired up that have lost interest in the program. Worked for Fleck at WMU for a year and was the receivers coach in Green Bay for a few years. But is he ready to lead a whole program?

You might say I'm starting this thread too early, but the reality is that a week and a half from now, we're gonna be learning a lot about the future of this program. Go Zips!!!

Ahhhh yes, US buzzards are circling already. Hopefully people will not be too offended at this pure speculation. One would have to assume that quality AD's especially in the MAC have a list of possible coaching candidates each season...just in case. Obviously as Johnny Carson use to say it's locked in a mayonnaise jar in Funk and Wagnall's refrigerator'. Or something like that. I assume Williams has lots of connections he could call on.

Anyway,I have kind of paid attention to where Luke Getsy has been since he left Akron. In addition to the above, also spent some time at Indiana University of Pennsylvania(DII). Thats another proverbial winning program.IF there were to be a change made here he seems like he has gathered enough experience in the past 12 years to be ready to take on a HC job at this level. He is from Western PA. He is familiar withe the areas Akron recruits from. Now one might assume he also has developed some connections in the South. He is still young and hopefully energetic. He is familiar with recruiting. The problem obviously would be money. At Mississippi State I have read the head coach pretty much does his own play calling. So,if he wanted to take on a HC job this might not be a bad place to jump in.

Might also want to keep an eye on what happens at Ohio State. Could be some assistants looking for work.

But,2 more wins this year its all moot.

  9. Did a little looking at records of MAC coaches. I picked out 2 who have been coaching for during the same period of time Bowden has been here. I did not include this season(2018) as obviously it is still in progress. So these numbers include 2012 thru 2017. These are records that include in and out of conference games.1) Rod Carey Northern Illinois-Overall-44-24. And,2) our old buddy Frank Solich down in Athens-Overall-47-31(obviously he has been around a lot longer). Since taking over at 'Harvard on the Hocking"(lol) in 2005 Solich has had only 2 sub-500 seasons. Terry Bowden-Overall-31-44. If I had included the records for 2018 the records would be even more skewed toward Carey and Solich. OU and NIU are two of the top tier MAC programs. I know as we have heard over and over and over again that Bowden inherited a BOS.

Not disputing that. But,this program still has not been able to consistently compete and I say consistently with the top programs in the MAC. Starting with the MAC championship game last year this program has been trending down. At some point we have to stop comparing this program to the lowest common denominator just to make it look respectable. If you don't compare yourself to the best, you will never be one of them.

Maybe we will be shocked and Akron will beat OU and South Carolina. But...

This has the feel of a team playing for a coaching staff that has been told they won't be returning.

Was at the game. This had the feel of a team that had 'quit' on this coach. Nelson couldn't play ,physically. And didn't look like he really wanted to play after the first few series. KN do not let the door hit you when t is likely a new regime will be here. Sorry. I am not anymore a Kato Nelson fan.

     self explanatory for most

If the point was to say that because Woodson's stats were better than Ramart's for one game that Ramart isn't possibly going to be a decent QB then that person should apply for a head coaching position. Obviously able to see into the future where others can not.

  12. OU will have a few extra days to prepare and rest. They will be playing at home. They MAY be playing to win the division(if UB loses). And have to figure they might have a little revenge in mind for last season's loss. OU is a really good MAC team. They are significantly better than the Zips at this point.

  13. How do we know how to figure the Zips?  Don't know for sure who will be at QB. They could come out and actually try to run the all day(please do it) and run up 200 yards on the ground.

The defense could create havoc, turn BG over multiple times and win the game. They could continue with the same type of offensive game planning that we have seen all season. They could have a back-up QB who 'finds his footing' so to speak and LEADS the offense.  OR they could have read some of 'the handwriting on the wall' about the season and come out flat. The back-up QB could be put in a bad position again and have another bad game. The starter could come back and not be physically ready to play.
Obviously, we hope they show up ready to play and salvage something out of this.

    Who knows?

It's a good thing....they have a better ability to see big piccture than some, here, who blame every single loss on coaching.

Nobody is blaming'every single loss on coaching'. What objective fans are doing is looking at patterns over the past 7 seasons. Just because some think all fans are idiots doesn't mean its true. Some fans can actually watch ballgames and understand what is and is not happening. This is not personal for most folks. But after 7 seasons this program should not be losing its first two conference games. It should not be getting waxed by the NIU's MU's,UB's and EMU's. The offense should not be as pathetic as it has been. That is seen most markedly in the poor O-line play and lack of a running game. This is finally about being consistently competitive with the best programs in the MAC. Clearly this program is not.

  15. This is not about how many picks Woodson threw in any game. As I said earlier, do not hang this on Ramart. One game is not a career. What Bowden has not been able to do in 7 seasons is,

develop a consistently good offensive line(they do not have one now), develop any CONSISTENT running game (even though every week he keeps harping about having to run the ball),develop CONSISTENT discipline on the field(stupid penalties, blown assignments and the inability to develop a solid QB who can lead an offense(that's also another reason the OC has to come under some severe scrutiny).

Maybe these guys will surprise and win out. But,as I also said earlier, the AD has to take responsibility for the call. The interim Prez is not likely to want to get involved. Hell' he's a Poly Sci guy.

Right.  I freaking lose my mind everytime a Zips (or Browns) returner has the opportunity to get the ball at the 25 and instead runs it and gets short of the 25.

This is the Zips for goodness sake, if you have the opportunity to start at the 25...START AT THE 25!  There's no way in hell I trust the Zips offense staring on less.

No culture of discipline has ever been developed under Bowden.
