Former Can't State HC Martin makes headlines
Lee Adams replied to Hilltopper's topic in Akron Zips Football
Doogie is at New Mexico State. Since I have visited twice, and will much more, since the Futbol Zips were @ the Lobos Tourney in 2008, I can vouch for what GoZips had to say. There isn't even a sign on the freeway pointing towards Santa Fe when you need to turn -- I ended up halfway to Las Vegas (New Mexico!) I wanted to write a letter to the newspaper suggesting the state visitors' motto be "Come to New Mexico and Get Lost". But, once I arrived in "El Norte", I finally understood why they want El Gringo to keep out. BTW -- Dougie's team opens their schedule at home vs the BobKittens. They'll likely get wiped, regardless of the inside info. And, I got free donuts off that (1987?) UNM victory courtesy of my boss, a Lobo alum. Directionally challenged I take it? Wide open spaces will do that. Should have kept going south. I have an in-law in Carlsbad who could have given you directions. You weren't on TWA 260 were you? No that would be impossible. -
Wont know until they play the games, but I would hope to see the Zips competitive against Can't, Temple, EMU, FIU, VMI, CMU and Buffalo. Just to name 7. How many WILL they win? Maybe none. Maybe 7. Who knows. Give 'em a chance. There are a lot of newcomers that might just prove they can play. Maybe not. But as for me and my house, we are supporting the Zips. Well good for you. Nobody said anybody wasn't 'supporting the Zips'. 'Competetive'? Thats pretty minimal. One would hope they could be 'competetive' in ALL the MAC games and against VMI. And we have all been giving them a chance for a long time now. What defines 'progress'at the end of this season?

Former Can't State HC Martin makes headlines

Walker is the coach at New Mexico State in Las Cruces? Locksley is the coach at New Mexico in ABQ. So the picture shows Walker, refers to UNM not NMSTU. So is Martin at State or UNM? By the way we vacation in New Mexico regularly. Great place with the Balloon Festival, high desert and all. And they do have road signs these days. -
You guys are in a fantasy alright! It is one thing to play in the same division as the teams that play in the bowl games, and play for the highest national title, but it is something completely different to actually compete seriously against those teams. No MAC school will be competing for a football national title in our lifetimes. Period. A voice of reason.

Who would they beat? BG is not on the schedule. OK Can't? But they will win more than a couple of games.

Maybe KD can coach baseball and Basketball? But really,it has always amazed me that Can't could consistently have a strong program when the schools are recruiting from the same base of players. Please don't dump a lot of money into expensive baseball facilities and expect that is automatically going to make a difference in performance. We see how that has worked with f.ball. If it can be worked out play as many games as possible at Canal Park. Why wouldn't a college kid want to play there? The last time they made the NCAA's was what,1987? Think they played T.Tech. I was living in Texas at the time. The coaches office was a little hole in Memorial Hall. Obviously, they have to find the 'right' coach who has enough local connections to bring the kids Can't is getting to Akron. Spend more money on the head coach.

Lee, I am in the area for a while and would live to take my young daughter to ride the train...she loves trains. Can you give me more info on where to catch the train and when it is operational?? Thanks :-) The website below or the Cuyahoga Valley National Park website. Or,if you are near downtown you can go to the station(Northside) that is down off of Howard St. Its near Luigi's across from the condos. Make sure to check the schedule. The train is running but they are doing some construction between Akron and Independence. Most of the schedule is within the Park. There are some days it does go south. You can get on and off the train in the park if you want to hike. If you have a bike and want to ride on the Towpath ask abbout the 'Bike Aboard' program. They will put your bike on the train, you can get off at one of the stops, ride the Towpath and get back on at another stop. Its a good deal You might see the bald eagles. You will see blue herons. Have fun!

Akron September opponent's coach in hot water?
Lee Adams replied to Dr Z's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Pluto writes the same stories year after year depending on which sports season it is. He just changes some of the names. Hard to believe that after the dust settles that anybody who has been associated with the football program will be around even if they didn't do anything wrong. OSU is going to have to wipe out any appearance that anyone on the staff when all this was going on will have anything to do with the program going forward. -
What? NoTex/Mex downtown? If thats the way you want to go try Azteca on E. Market,El Meson in Cuy. Falls(Portage Tr),Mariachi Loco on Waterloo Rd. But anybody coming to this area this time of year has to go to Cuy Valley NP. Ride the train from downtown if you don't want to drive. Hit the Winking Lizard in Peninsula. Ride the train back. Around here you can't waste good weather sitting inside. Papa Joe's is a good Italian place in the Valley. A little more expensive but a nice place. But,you will have to wait if you don't have a reservation most evenings.

Its funny that when these things come out everyone becomes an expert. And, the mags. that people say are 'the best' seem to be the ones that have the predictions they like. So read the ones that you like for whatever purpose you want. But most of us are in the same boat as the people who write the articles. They rarely see all of the teams that they are commenting on actually play. Although they most likely have access to better information than most of the rest of us. Just have fun with it.

Agree. Ignoring what any did in the pros. Although correct me,wasn't it Smith who returned two ints. for TD's w/Tampa? But, at Akron he could take one side of the field away from the offense and was fast enough to run guys down on the other side of the field.

Which Media Outlet Provides The Best Zips Coverage?
Lee Adams replied to Hilltopper's topic in Akron Zips Football
Actually if you listen to KNR in the afternoon,Reghi does a decent job given everything he has to cover. At least he does some play by paly, including MAC games and has seen some of the teams he talks about. -

Its a shame we are so bad that we have to get our kicks from the maladys of another team. -
I think their best chance at a draft will be in Lot 9 this fall.
-
Looks pretty realistic. Bad thing is it is obvious that other folks are not convinced about RI's ability to be a good x's and o's guy at this point. Be prepared for another year or two of losing more than winning.
-
The 'weaker' MAC schools right now would be?
-
Better find some good weather first...Phoenix is nice in April.
-
Not for this year but next. Careful with this one. This is a pretty good FB program. Don't need anymore losses to 1-AA scholls in fball.
-
Chisolm at least was making medicore talent look bad. Thats what good players are supposed to do. There may be hope there. The receivers are all midgets but may be at least faster. Can't tell anything about Nicely except that he appeared to be farther along than the other two. That figures. The secondary still looked lost. The D-line wasn't making too many stops at the line thats is very troubling. When the 3-4th game of the regular season rolls around we will know more.

I hope that it is not news to anyone that Akron has a 'weak' fan base. That information is like ancient history. That was why it was so curious when the powers that be decided to spring for such an elaborate facility and apparently assume just because it was new it would draw big crowds.
-
Especially since FIU is going to be pretty good(relatively)this year.
-
+1. +1. Hell do we have a number high enough?

ABJ Spring Football Coverage Continues

Coming this weekend a story about our favorite 'masked man'.
