I just don't understand why they wouldn't be enrolled just like the other freshman are?

You aren't enrolled until you are taking classes. Many freshmen come early and take classes, but not all do. There are too many little factors as to why some do and some don't to really have a rule of thumb.

  2. I guess I don't get the skepticism where Ball is concerned. 1) He has all of the stars, for those who cared about stars 2) He is a beast, physically - there can be no question as to whether he has the right body type 3) Speed is not an issue 4) He performed well in his two starts for us. 5) One freak injury does not make one injury prone. A broken bone, like he had can happen to the best conditioned athletes.

I get that he has not had the chance to light up the board with stats, yet, but I see nothing but reason to feel highly optimistic about this kid. I am not going to hold it against him that he sat the bench behind Ezekiel Elliot.

"Blunt contributed to Aurora’s football team as a wide receiver, linebacker, punter, kick returner, punter returner and holder for extra points and field goals."

Maybe he will be Kyle Foster's replacement. Because really need to travel a kid who does nothing but hold for the kicker.

What the hell. I'm in on this thread because I am so incredibly bored reading how we beat up each other on non-Zip sports issues.

    My concerns:

    1) Unproven QB (health-wise)

    2) Poor run blocking line, based on last year's performance. Until they show they can do it i don't believe they will be able to run block just because it's a year later

    3) Incompetent OC. He proved it last year. Coaching does cost us games guys.

    4) Poor D line. First team talent is undecided and depth is unproven

    5) Depth at WR

    6) Special team play especially punting. Coaching makes a difference here too.

    7) No winning culture

     My prediction: 6-6

QB, D line, punting, and WR are my top 4 concerns. I must say, not looking forward to boring punt returns again after a year of being dazzled by JoJo.

Honestly, none of it matters if Tommy isn't healthy because we will be too easy to shut down with a mediocre QB.

IMHO, it Tommy isn't 100% we might see true freshman Alex Rammart in the mix.

  5. My predictions are based on a healthy Tommy Woodson.

-Penn State: We lose, but it is one of our better offensive performances against a quality team. Woodson rises to the occasion and plays well against many former HS foes, Ball flashes signs of greatness early until the PSU defense makes the necessary adjustments to plug up holes. If we have some early success, I expect trickery to make an early appearance.

-Arkansas-Pine Bluff: If we don't blow them out, we are in trouble. Warren Ball rushes for 175+ yards, Woodson throws for over 350 yds. It's a nice opportunity for less experienced receivers to get some game time route running and catches. Gilbert and Jamal Davis have their way with the backfield.

-Iowa State: This could go either way. A non-conference game like this is not going to be a hot seat qualifier, even if we don't win.

-Troy: This will be a great test for us and give us the best preview into the conference schedule.

-Bowling Green: The Zips finally turn the tide against BG and win.

-Ball State: This will be a good match up with an improving Ball State team. We should win, but should not despair if we don't.

-Western Michigan. We row...oh, wait. Zips win. PJ who?

-Toledo: Front runners for MAC title - this could be the biggest game of the season for the Zips if they are competitive this year.

-Buffalo: In the pattern of blow outs at home against Buffalo, we win and we can all forget about last year's disaster in Buffalo.

    *Bye Week

-Miami: Bye week bliss strikes and we win, but not in a blowout. Weather will be miserable and a running game saves the day.

-Ohio: This could go either way, but isn't it about time we beat them?

-Portage County: Zips win big with a balanced scoring attack. Chapman ends his regular season career with the Zips on a high note and has a banner receiving day.

Having freshman run onto the field with the players is a great move.  Start early in recruiting the new students to be fans.  If promoted strongly, it seems like one of the best things that could be done to "grab" new students and make them fans.

I agree. I hope the team interacts with them so they have a great experience.

Whatever happened to the Chrome ones?  And the Black Uniforms...those disappeared last year

You probably my won't seem them, again. The helmets were impossible to keep looking nice and the new Navy uniforms Trump the black ones. From what I understand, the black uniforms and chrome helmets were pretty much expected to bridge the gap until the new navy and white uniforms were purchased.

I'm not so sure about having to take classes for the room & board over the summer

I think they generally like them taking 1-2 classes to help them acclimate without the pressure of the season and to enable them to take lighter schedules during the season. I don't think you can be considered an official part of the team until you are enrolled, which means taking classes. I might be mixing up some info here, however.

If you recall, several of us mentioned that we were getting similar information on this attitude/mindset issue last year.  Thanks for sharing.  But, I was hopeful that maybe things had changed.

    Yes, we shall see.

I actually asked a player about this. He disagreed. He said TW is not a workout workhorse but said he is a true leader and we'll liked by the team.

As mentioned before, the staff expects Woodson to start the season. He has 5,000+ yards and 39 TDs in his Akron career, I would not use the word "inexperienced" to describe Woody. One of his best skills, is his downfield playmaking accuracy, I wouldn't expect that to change this year, especially if they can make the running game a successful threat, and make defenders move closer to the line of scrimmage.

This is an encouraging update. He is a game changer, for us. I have also heard that Chapman continues to make solid progress as a WR and that Stewart should be a solid WR. I would imagine that all eyes will be on Wolf, so we will need another guy or two who can make catches. I thought Gladney made some progress last year and Coney came up with some nice grabs, with limited looks.

Just to cover my ass, I like the videos too. I look forward to seeing as many as they can put together. They give us hope and as Andy Dufraine in the Shawshank Redemption says "hope is a good thing, perhaps the best of things." I'm a fan but I still want proof this is a good football team. I'll be there to see them in the fall. I hope the videos convince others to come too.

I understand this sentiment, completely. Let me see passes being caught and tackles being made. I know they can't practice, right now, but it's hard to buy into the hype with the reservations I have about 2017. I hope my reservations are completely unfounded.

  12. I recently spoke with a a current Zips FB player who indicated that Tommy has exceptional football IQ that sets him apart. He is able to call the right play from the line of scrimmage. If he is back to his usual form, we can win some games.

Question: Has Akron had this kind of participation in Summer voluntary workouts in prior years? This type of effort is how you get the edge. This is how you win.

Looks like about the same size crowd as they usually get.

These special intense workouts are great for building community within the team.  Coach Campbell (Iowa State) told about how the lack of seriousness about regular practices, as well as voluntary workouts made him get disillusioned as a D1 athlete until he saw what Mount Union was doing with voluntary workouts with no coaches present.  That was the start of "the process" he used at Toledo and now Iowa State.

Coach Sleeve hails from Mt. Union.
