BLEACHER BUM!!!!You old son of a gun.Yes, we're going to be down there, somewhere along the fence. Can't make it down there as early as you can (son has a football game in Barberton at 10 a.m.) but right after that w'ere going down.Any way to save us a spot near you...big enough for the canopy (and the kegger)? We'd like to see all the Oldies down there....It's the last season for the bowl, and we should be there to start our farewell tour.GO ZIPS!

Thanks, and it sounds like that might be the way I'm going to have to go. Down here in Massillon the BTN is showing Columbus State/Youngstown State instead of Akron/WI BTN is showing Akron Wisc...I'm currently watching it...but wish I were not.17-0 Wis, early 2q

1913.Then why doesn't say Buchtel College? That's why I think this is some type of football club competition...not the American Professional Football Asso.(NFL), which didn't begin until 1920.I couldn't find any evidence of Youngstown ever having an NFL team.Nominated for "non-sentence of the year." Come on TimmyBoy.TimmyBoy????? "non-sentence" ????

What year did we change from Buchtel College to The University of Akron?
-
Yeah, but you gotta admit that there is something very satisfying about watching liberal organizations attacking the mascot of a liberal bastionThat was actually my first thought. Then I wondered which restroom the PETA official used after visiting Can't: Male, Female, or Transgendered.I'm digging this whole thing.I think PETA should protect Can't games!!!!

I think that moment was 1985 when Gerry Faust became head coach. It was the University's first statement in going big time. Faust had sites on making Akron a D-I Independent major program, such as Penn St. and Syracuse at the time. He thought Akron could do better than the Mid-American Conference. Two things happened that crushed those plans.1. The move to the major conferences, where all the big-time independents started joining up, thus killing the "independent big time" programs...except for that team in South Bend.2. Faust didn't win.At the news conference announcing he was taking the job, Faust said a major factor in his decision to take the Akron job was the stadium.Akron had the enrollment, the stadium, and now the commitment to go big time.It all flopped with a losing, or at best, .500-win program.Another shoe to drop was Bob Huggins leaving when Akron had to leave the Ohio Valley Conference, and thus the automatic NCAA bid, because football went to I-A. The OVC had, and still may have, a rule that says all members must compete on the same level....that meant I-AA for football.Man, Huggins was pissed. The school struggled to find a basketball conference with an automatic bid. We were going to join the Northeast Conference with such major powers as Marist and the two St. Francis schools. If you would have seen Huggins at that news conference, you would have thought he was at a funeral. We withdrew our membership in the Northeast Conference...had to pay a penalty...because I believe we joined the AMCU-8 with Cleveland State, which was a new conference and was on the waiting list for an automatic bid. I can't remember if we formally joined the AMCU-8 or how many years we played in that before joining the MAC. The AMCU-8 has morphed into a lot of things and I believe most of its members now play in the Horizon League with a lot of the former members of the old Midwestern City Conference with teams like Detroit, Butler and St. Louis.Ah...the memories.

The good:I forget the year, but we beat Toledo with a 50 + yard field goal in the final seconds of the game. I met the holder for that kick at the Bowling Green tailgate last year in BG.Broadcasting the City Series double headers on WAUP in the late 70's. Who could forget South v. Buchtel, affectionately called the "Soul Bowl."The Acme-Zips game when it was a true community event that packed the bowl year after year. The 1976 Pioneer Bowl team. Watching the AAA championship game with my dad in 1972 as Warren Western Reserve wins the state against Youngstown Cardinal Mooney.Any win over those egg-sucking morons in Can't.Playing Intramural flag football on the old Astro Turf. The bad:The 1973 Falls High-St. V game when the Refs ripped us off with a bad clipping penalty allowing the Irish to beat the Black Tigers. Boooo Booooo.Broadcasting an Akron North-East game in 1978 when a fog rolls in to the Bowl...couldn't see a thing from the press box, but had to call the action (or fiction). The toilets. Who decided to paint over the pipes and urinals anyway????? The way the Bowl looks now. It's a freaken embarrassment with the end-zone covers and those speakers on the scoreboard.

They've dug it up and removed it. I watched them while they were doing it. That part of Nash in the cams is history. They also have put a fence up around much of the project.I wonder if they'll find all of the Western Cult Final Exams with all the right answers that I buried there in 1980...? :D

I'm not sure, but the Mr. Hero going down is a good sign. I have felt for a while that we should bring the beauty of the campus to that run down area as well. UA's main borders should be from the traintracks/downtown, to Route 8, and from Exchange to Market. Heading towards Market is the only real way to expand wothout cutting the campus into chunks geographically due to main roads or natural barriers. The way it's expanding, the U's new borders will go from Lakemore to Bath...not that there's anything wrong with that.Let's make education our new "rubber."

I hear what you say 88, however, most of the people I worked with, reporters that is, are conservative....personally, I'm one who is in the middle and when I lean, it is to the right side.
-
it's not bad...nicely shot...however, I would have worked in some student sound bites to break it up a little considering its length. You do get a bit dizzy from all the moving aerials, pans and zooms edited next to each other. Do not view after eating.

Well, it's official. Can't State has always been ahead of UA in journalism, public relations and broadcasting....now, with their new facility...they flat out kick our butts.I couldn't recommend UA to anyone wishing to major in these areas.Considering the sheepskin I hold from the Hilltop...it pains me to say this.Link

This team has gone further than any other Akron team in the D-I era.I don't know about you, but I didn't expect that out of this year's squad.I think we've been headed in the right direction for a few years now. I'm not sure what kind of talent we're going to have next year, but KD has laid a solid foundation to take Akron basketball to places it has never been before.

Now that we don't have to worry about Can't...

Did anyone see our banner on the jumbotron at The Q? It was on there twice!More pictures from the MAC Tournament.

A few tournament "How come quickies..."-How come the Q was three-quarters full with Can't fans?-How come fans criticize a team that made the championship game when they were picked to come in fourth in the MAC East and suffered many key injuries, and despite all of that, were in the thick of it?-How come the Zips couldn't make easy inside shots, 3's where they had good looks, and foul shots?-How come tickets in the nose bleed section costs $30!!!?-How come Jim Christian hasn't moved on to a BCS Conference yet?-How come people still don't have confidence in Keith Dambrot?

Thanks to everyone who showed up last night.Luke, Fred, Steve, Ted, Jackson...and of course, the Captain and entourage! We had the banner in full view last night...hoping for a little free Advertising. I'm expecting a bill from the Athletic department before week's end. (kidding)A few Alumni came up and asked about the Oldies and said they would join online. After that first half, however, I was wondering if anyone would still want to join...but the Zippers came through. They were down by 14 late in the first half...all of a sudden, they're up by 5 in the early second half. Toledo goes cold and we start draining the 3's.The streak remains in tact. The Oldies are hoping to set up another table at a home game soon. We're still in the baby steps stage....but still plugging away. Anyone who may have time to help the cause, please contact us.I know we all have our day jobs, but the more we can spread it around, the better. It's all good! (thank you Martha)Thanks to all...Go Zips!

Hi everyone: Just a note to let you know that the AK-OLDIES will be at the Toledo game tonight. We'll be sitting in the bleachers in the end zone opposite the band. Look for the OLDIES banner. Please wear your OLDIES gear. If you have a blue seat, try to stop up anyway and say hi.We won't be having a table outside in the lobby for this game, but just the same, I'll bring t shirts for anyone who would like to sign up.Hope to see you there.Go Zippers!!
