Jerry Slocum retires from YSU & Gary Waters retires from CSU
skip-zip replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I don't know about that. Just on the surface, I see a longtime D-1 Asst. from a highly successful program, and longtime D-1 coach that's been at several different programs (and holds 2 MAC coach of the year awards). And your pick is a Div. III coach with a .500 record this year who's now on a downslide from his best years a few years ago ? -

I knew exactly what you were referring to. It's hilarious. -
Correct on both points. And i just checked: Keith was COY in 2013, 2016, and now 2017. So that's 3 !!
-
WAIT....am I reading this right?? It says at the end that this is Keith's first year he was voted best coach? I think this is his THIRD ?? EDIT: It now says THIRD, and shows that the article was updated at 12pm...LOL

I thought all along (and expressed it) that Dog would be POY. But Keith is a complete shock. Deserved, but I didn't think they'd give it to him this year.

Agenda? Nooooo. And all you had to do was watch about a minute of TV or read the title and the first few lines of a print piece during the 2016 election season to see that it's only getting worse.

Eastern Michigan 16-16 v. Akron 24-7 at noon Thursday

Neither of them will equal Zeke's number of blocks in that game, but I sure hope they both score more than 9 points. If they want to see a workhorse who played with heart and desire, I'd say that they should watch Treadwell during the 2013 title game. -

And that was the 2nd attempt. We should have been doing it after the home Kent game too. Crazy that we lost 2 home games but won 2 big road games during the same stretch. -

That's hilarious. I hadn't heard that one yet, but so true. -

That's a really tough thing to get kids to celebrate and enjoy their accomplishments, but also get them to understand that this is somewhat of a minor prize and make them hungry to achieve more. I thought Keith handled that the way he needed to. -
Maybe the reality of this whole situation is that when you look down that Mock Draft list, there's 30 WR's that he rates higher? This could easily explain why Jerome indicates that he might have made a bad decision.

I'd think you'd have to be wary of any team who's won 9 straight games. I pointed this out as soon as I found out that they were likely our Semifinal opponent. But, the mojo would definitely be on Akron's side with the way we've dominated them.

For a few minutes during commercial breaks while watching the Big 10 Network?

If you're the champ of the MAC, in a weak MAC year, with 7 losses and a #59 RPI? You'd better be about 20 spots better than that.
-
Just curious...how do you know the selection committee had Akron slotted higher than SDSU? Sure, maybe we had a shot at a #12 last year with a #34 RPI. But ZERO chance this year with a #59 RPI. You can hope for all of the conference tournament upsets you want, but nobody on that selection committee is going to give us that slot with our RPI and our weak league this year.
-
I called this right a few weeks ago. I'm just glad Kwan still got on the 2nd team with the setbacks the last several games.
-
Of course it does. The last of the At-Large teams who play in Dayton are 11's and 12's. So, why would you say that an Auto Qualifier who also gets a #12 wasn't regarded as being the same caliber by the committee?
-
I'd jump through the roof if we got a #12. I think that absolutely went off the board with the 2 home losses. I think it's important to keep in mind that if you are awarded a #12, you're right on the cusp of having an At-Large if you didn't win your conference tournament. And we didn't do nearly enough down the stretch to be an At-Large candidate.
-
I think they were up 16 at one point. Big comeback in the 2nd half, and surely some adjustments were made. I think I just don't like like the way that they will probably choose to attack us, more than anything else. Not for an opening matchup.
-
With the RPI sitting at #59 right now, I'd be happy to take a #13 seed. I think it's more likely at #14. And with everyone else in the league well over 100, I think they'll see a #15.
-
I think I just still have too good of a memory about the way they ran up the floor on us and scored at will, especially using their big man, in that 47 point first-half outburst in DeKalb about a month ago. Someone who wants to try to beat you that way would not be my choice for the first of 3 straight days of games.

I'm thinking more in terms of who I'd rather play on Thursday. I like playing EMU (besides the nightmare in the Quarterfinal last year) because of their Zone defense. You won't get any pressure from them for 3/4 of the court. Then it's a matter of just concentrating on spacing, passing, and screening to get open shots. It should be a lot less taxing on the guys as a first round game. And their 56 point output against Toledo the other night makes me a little less fearful that they might be in the groove offensively right now after that 100+ point output against Central (Does Central even know how to play defense?). We've defended them pretty well this year anyway.

That's the point right there. When you already have other factors working against you, running a slow time could be devastating to your chances. To me, I don't understand how a player who wants to go to the NFL doesn't definitely know what he can run. Hoping you can run a certain time (per article) doesn't seem to make sense. If having once run a faster time with a hand-held device was what you considered reliable data, that doesn't seem to make sense either. I sure hope we can commit himself to doing everything he can to cut that time before his pro day.

How would you confirm the validity of any claim that any rivalry is the best? Heck, we have rivalries in our own conference alone that would say they are better and more recognized than ours. Miami/OU, Toledo/BG, and Central/Western banter all the time about the grandness of their rivalry. Unfortunately for all of us at our level, nobody cares outside of the people associated with the two schools. Our rivalry with Kent is fun and meaningful to us, but does it contribute anything towards our National Recognition? Unfortunately not.
