I'm seeing this in a lot of threads. Why is using the 1-3-1 when a team is shooting the lights out from 3-land so impressive. That what it's designed for. Comments along the lines of "Buffalo didn't know how to attack it" or "Buffalo didn't prepare for the 1-3-1" also baffle me. Perhaps their execution wasn't good, or the only thing they had going for them was their outside shooting and they're not otherwise that good, but these are D1 players and an experienced D1 coach. They knew how to attack it--they just couldn't execute.

Can the Zips finish the MAC un..uhh...unde...???
BirdZip replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Zach, Zach, Zach...Always trying so hard to look smart...and always failing. If for each of the 10 non-Ohio games we have a 90% statistical probability of winning, the statistical probability that we will win all 10 is only 35% (.9^10). -
Watch Harney during the National Anthem at the next home game--doesn't even pay attention, adjusts his socks, jokes with whoever is next to him. Very disrespectful. Then turn your attention to Kretzer--at attention, focused on the flag and nothing else, complete respect.

KD mentioned that some of the sluggishness may have been because the players started class again this week. If that was a contributing factor, it could be a bad sign for Saturday since we know K-ent State players don't spend any time studying or going to class.

But in an ESPN article about that latest bracketology, you have this: Never underestimate the power of a nonconference win at a place like Creighton. Boise got a good one at Wyoming last week, but other than that it hasn't beaten anyone remotely noteworthy. But the Broncos are a No. 8 seed right now because, by golly, they beat Creighton on its own floor. You can't hate on that. Opportunities lost...

Akron Zips Lebron James Bobble Head Night
BirdZip replied to dre22era's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Of your 999 ZNO posts, about 970 of them have been negative toward the Zips in one way or another, so I would expect nothing but negativity in your reply to my post as well. It also seems about as well thought out as most of your posts. If I said I was going to make my house more secure my replacing my poodle with a set of lions and armed guards, I would expect your response to be something along the lines of "Make your house more secure by removing the guard dog? That doesn't make any sense." However, to play your little game, closing off a few seats would force those 12 people who usually sit there to sit in the other seats, making the gym look more crowded. If people come for the first time and the place looks empty, that's one more reason for them not to come back. The gist of my post was that if you're going to do something to try to draw in more people to one particular game, consider doing more things at that particular game to improve the gameday experience. -
Akron Zips Lebron James Bobble Head Night

If they think the bobbleheads will draw more people in to that game, then they need to make the gameday experience, at least for that day, a good one. Close up the end zone seats on the south side where no-one sits anyway and put up the kid bouncer. maybe have people there doing free face painting, etc. Have extra people working the concessions. Maybe even run some concession specials. Give those extra people a reason to want to come back beyond just the basketball (if basketball was all they wanted, they'd be coming already). -
I think the Moderators need to start a series called "Zips Fans: Sitting Through the Pain--Crazy, Stupid, Other or all of the above." Substitute "Drinking" or any of a dozen other words. Chronicle the diehard Zips fans' journey through the last 3+ years of yearning for mediocrity.

Stupid WMU bench warmer ruined my prediction with what may be the worst lay-up attempt ever in a college game there at the end. I'm with CK. I want to see a Kentucky-vs-EMU style beatdown. Sad part is, if the Zips played like Zips in the first half, the margin could have been 40+. If you want national notice, don't just win, destroy. Show that you are better than your conference.

I'm most interested in seeing how the players approach this game. KD once again said post-game last night that the "real season" (as he calls it) starts next Wednesday. I want to see the Zips come out from the tipoff and attack like they want to win by 60 so we can see just how good this Zips team is. If I am to THINK BIGGER then I also will EXPECT BETTER. I hope my expectations are met on Thursday. If we're as good as we think we are and truly want to talk about making a run in the NCAA tournament, this game shouldn't be close. WMU is a pretender. Zips by 20.

And he is on pace to score his 1000th point shortly thereafter. If he matches his scoring average, he'll hit 999 against Western Michigan at home and hit 1000 at NIU.

I think they should have people meet the students at the door and carry them to their seats, seeing how far they would have to walk to reach the seating area. A student could pull a hammy walking that extra 120 feet. (<-- Sarcasm Indicator)

+1. As I recall it, he had no-one in front of him. He shot it off balance one-handed, but likely didn't have to. Alex had 19 and was putting in shots left and right. I agree, our typical end-of-half/regulation "plays" are terrible, but that one worked fine and Alex just missed it.

This got me thinking about what other Universities do, etc. I don't have time to do massive research, but I can do some googling during my lunch break. At the University of Kentucky, to be eligible for tickets, students must pay an Athletics Fee (optional). But that fee is only $19, and the tickets for basketball games are only an additional $5 each. Pretty good deal. At Duke, it gets a little more complicated. If you want a ticket to the UNC game (or other high profile games), then start camping out in January in an area called "Krzyzewskiville". There are periodic checks to ensure that a certain number of your group are in the tent at any given time, and if not, you lose your spot. Heaters are not allowed. (Editorial comment: These students camp out for months, and we complain about having to go to a special door.) Link: Krzyzewskiville Article For regular games, it's a first come, first served ticket line. The seats are great. Interestingly, even for Duke, they sometimes can't give these tickets away. Here's a NY Times article from last season talking about student attendance being down at Duke games, with students citing reasons of long lines, etc. Duke then sells those tickets. From the article: “'A lot of my friends are mad about how we're giving away seats because we can't even fill the section,'” the sophomore Jonathan Hafferkamp said. “'But the thing is, they don't care enough to go to games to fix the problem.'” Link: Duke Attendance

I love your technical basketball insight, but when you trash everyone on the team (plus the coach) and constantly portray Chauncey as flawless, your comments become nothing but old, tired, and irrelevant. I have to filter everything I read in your posts, and this time the filter got clogged. Man, those freshmen stunk!

I think you just helped my case. Another characteristic of this generation is to blame others for what they do. Case in point above. And, by the way, my oldest child is 11 and has been taught that he needs to earn what he gets. And I keep forgetting that being given free seats is being treated like s***. Again, if not the best, then nothing...

I have season tickets but they're the family plan so it's just GA. I sit in the bleachers in an end zone. They're not that comfortable and I'm old now (just turned 40), so I bring a butt cushion. I love to watch the games and I'm happy with my seats. If I wanted better seats, I'd pay for them. If I'm not willing to pay for better seats, then I continue to sit there. This discussion where the students pay nothing for their seats (no, you do not pay for them indirectly) and continue to complain about the quality of those seats is an interesting reflection, I think, on that generation. Everything should be given to me and it should be of the highest quality. "I have to ask for a wrist band! The horror! This is too hard!" I see above suggestons to take the people who pay the most for their seats (and likely give tons more than that to the department) and move them off to a corner so that the students can have those seats for free. Give me a break. I see suggestions to double the seating in the end zones. From what I've seen, this just means those seats would be 25% full instead of 50% full. While I don't necessarily think the Marketing Department does a great job, I think the real problem is a student "fan base" that expects to be catered to like their royalty. Gimme, Gimme, Gimme. I don't know how the Marketing Department or anyone else can satisfy someone who is locked in that mindset.

If you add 2 rounds (gets you to 256 teams vs 64/68) you'd only have to add a single week. Add a portion of "play-in" type games on Tuesday to roll in the rest of the teams and you still keep it within that extra week. I'm not saying I like the idea, but it's doable.

Sendy: What's that? KD: Antidote. Sendy: To what? KD: To the poison you just drank... (laughs uncontrollably)
